Short answer: a Chromebook does not have a documented ChromeOS feature that turns Windows software into locally running Windows applications. ChromeOS’s Linux development environment runs Linux programs, not the Windows editions of those programs. To use a Windows app, you normally either connect to a separate Windows computer with Chrome Remote Desktop or use an organization-provided application-virtualization service. Parallels Desktop for ChromeOS was the former local virtual-machine option for some enterprise deployments, but Google says it is being discontinued and that support for existing customers ended on April 21, 2026.
The right choice depends on where the application is allowed to run, whether you need it offline, who supplies the Windows computer or virtualized service, how reliable your network is, and whether the software depends on hardware or peripherals. Start by identifying those constraints rather than installing random compatibility layers.
First define what “run a Windows app” means
People use that phrase for three different arrangements. They are not interchangeable, and the distinction determines what your Chromebook can do.

A local application is installed on the Chromebook and executes on its processor and operating system. ChromeOS can run Chrome web apps, Android apps where supported, and Linux applications through its Linux development environment. Google describes that environment as a Debian system for command-line tools, editors, and integrated development environments (IDEs). It does not document Linux support as a way to run Windows applications as Windows applications.

A Linux build of a program may be a good substitute when the developer publishes one, but that is a different product from the Windows build. A Windows installer, such as an .exe or .msi package, should not be assumed to work merely because Linux has been enabled.
Access a Windows computer remotely
In this arrangement, the application remains installed on another Windows computer. Your Chromebook displays and controls that computer through a remote-desktop connection. Chrome Remote Desktop is Google’s documented route for accessing applications and files on a separate computer, including a Windows host. The Chromebook is a client; it is not hosting the Windows program locally.
Receive an application through virtualization
An application-virtualization service runs or packages the Windows program in an environment supplied by an employer, school, or service provider and presents it to the user. Google points organizations to Cameyo to explore Windows app delivery using application virtualization. The cited Google guidance does not establish consumer enrollment, pricing, supported applications, or availability, so treat this as an organization-led option rather than a guaranteed personal setup.
Compare the available routes
| Route | Where the Windows application runs | Internet dependence | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Linux development environment | On ChromeOS, but only as a Linux application | A suitable Linux application can be used without a remote connection after installation | A Chromebook that permits Linux and a Linux edition of the software | Developer tools and applications published for Linux |
| Chrome Remote Desktop | On a separate Windows desktop or laptop | Required for the remote session | A configured, powered-on Windows host; internet access; permission to use remote desktop | People who already have an accessible Windows computer |
| Application virtualization | In an environment operated by an organization or provider | Depends on the service, but delivery is normally remote | An approved service, account, and an application included by its administrator | Managed work or school applications |
| Parallels Desktop for ChromeOS | Historically in a local virtual machine on supported enterprise Chromebooks | Used to obtain and manage the virtual machine, subject to the deployment design | Historically, a Windows 10 disk image and license, a Parallels license per user, and corporate image storage | Existing deployments only; not a current route for new installations |
The table’s last row is historical. Google says the product is being discontinued and gives April 21, 2026 as the end of support for existing customers. That date has passed, so it should not be presented as a supported recommendation.
Option 1: use ChromeOS Linux when a Linux edition exists
Google’s exact description is: “Linux is a feature that lets you develop software using your Chromebook.” The feature creates a Debian environment in which you can install Linux tools with APT. That makes it useful for compilers, command-line utilities, code editors, and IDEs, as well as other software that has a genuine Linux release.

Check the application before enabling Linux
- Look for an official Linux package or Linux installation instructions from the application’s publisher.
- Confirm that the publisher’s Linux edition provides the functions you require; it may not match the Windows edition feature-for-feature.
- Check whether the application needs hardware acceleration, a Windows-only plug-in, or a device driver. Google’s Linux documentation lists hardware acceleration and Android emulators among features not yet supported in its Linux environment.
- If the Chromebook belongs to a school or employer, ask the administrator whether Linux is allowed. Google says a work or school administrator may prevent users from enabling it.
Enable the environment and install a Linux package
- Open Chromebook Settings and locate the Linux development environment section. If the control is unavailable, the device policy may have disabled Linux.
- Enable the environment and allow ChromeOS to create its Debian container. The Chromebook then provides a Linux terminal.
- In the terminal, use the application’s official Linux instructions. Debian packages are commonly installed with APT; do not substitute a Windows installer for a Linux package.
- Launch the installed Linux application from the Chromebook’s app launcher and test the functions you actually need, including file access and any required peripherals.
- Keep the Linux package updated according to the publisher’s instructions and ChromeOS’s Linux maintenance controls.
The Linux container is sandboxed. Google notes that Linux apps share a sandbox with each other, which is a security boundary but also a practical constraint when software expects unrestricted access to the rest of the Chromebook. Plan where project files live and test import, export, printing, and device access before moving important work into the Linux app.
What Linux cannot establish
Enabling Linux does not create a Windows compatibility layer, supply a Windows license, or convert a Windows installer into a Linux package. If the publisher offers only Windows software, the Linux route does not answer the compatibility question. Choose remote access or an approved virtualization service instead.
Option 2: connect to a Windows computer with Chrome Remote Desktop
Chrome Remote Desktop keeps the Windows application on another computer and lets the Chromebook interact with it. Google’s support documentation says remote access can be configured on a Windows computer and that users can access applications and files on another computer. Internet access is required.
What the host arrangement looks like
The host can be a Windows desktop or laptop you already own, or a computer managed by your organization. A Windows mini PC is one possible dedicated host, but Google does not require that form factor. Buying a separate machine adds hardware, licensing, power, and maintenance responsibilities; first check whether an existing or employer-provided computer can do the job.
- The Windows host must be configured for remote access before the Chromebook can connect.
- The host must be available when you need the application. A shut-down, sleeping, disconnected, or policy-locked computer cannot serve the session.
- The Chromebook and host need a working internet path. A local network problem, captive portal, firewall rule, or organization policy can prevent connection.
- The Windows application, its files, and its Windows license remain on the host. Installing Chrome Remote Desktop on the Chromebook does not install the application locally.
Set up the host
- On the Windows computer, open Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop service and choose the option to configure remote access.
- Install the host component when prompted, then assign the computer a recognizable name and an access PIN or other credential requested by the service.
- Leave the computer powered and connected when a session is required. Test a connection from another device before relying on it for time-sensitive work.
- If the computer is owned by an employer or school, obtain approval and follow its account and remote-access rules. Administrators can control remote desktop use on managed accounts.
Connect from the Chromebook
- On the Chromebook, open Chrome and go to the Chrome Remote Desktop remote-access page.
- Sign in with the account authorized for the host and select the configured Windows computer.
- Enter the requested PIN or credential and wait for the Windows desktop to appear.
- Open the Windows application inside that session. Save files to the Windows computer or to an approved location, then disconnect when finished.
Exact screen labels can change as Google updates the service. If a control is missing, verify that you are using the same authorized account, that the host is online, and that a work or school administrator has not disabled the feature.

When remote access is a poor fit
- Unreliable connectivity: The session depends on internet access, so frequent outages or high latency can interrupt work.
- Offline requirements: A Chromebook cannot use the Windows application through Chrome Remote Desktop when it cannot reach the host.
- Hardware-dependent software: Applications that require a specialized local driver, dongle, camera, scanner, or other peripheral may not behave as they would when used directly at the Windows computer. Test the complete workflow rather than assuming remote input and device forwarding will work.
- Restricted networks: School, business, hotel, and public networks may block remote desktop traffic, and managed accounts may prohibit it.
Option 3: application virtualization supplied by an organization
Google’s discontinuation guidance for Parallels tells organizations to explore Cameyo for Windows app delivery using application virtualization. This route is different from both Linux and a personal remote desktop: an administrator publishes an application, and the service presents it to an approved user.
Questions to ask an administrator or provider
- Is the specific Windows application published for your account, and which edition or version is it?
- Does the service support the files, plug-ins, databases, and peripherals the application needs?
- What happens when the Chromebook is offline or the service is unavailable?
- Which identity, licensing, and data-retention policies apply?
- Can the organization support your Chromebook model and ChromeOS version?
The available Google page names Cameyo as an option to investigate but does not state consumer pricing, enrollment requirements, application compatibility, or service availability. Do not infer any of those details until the organization or provider confirms them.
Why Parallels is not a current Chromebook plan
Parallels Desktop for ChromeOS was the documented local virtual-machine route for some enterprise deployments. Google’s setup documentation says it is being discontinued and that existing customers were supported only until April 21, 2026. Because that deadline has passed, new buyers should not plan a deployment around it or treat old setup guides as evidence of present support.
Historical requirements
| Requirement | What Google’s former setup documentation recorded |
|---|---|
| Windows media | A Windows 10 disk image |
| Windows licensing | A Windows license |
| Parallels licensing | A Parallels Desktop for ChromeOS license for each user |
| Image distribution | A corporate storage server from which the image could be downloaded to organization devices |
A separate Google user guide described Windows-file sharing, USB drives and some USB devices, external monitors, keyboards, mice, webcams, and microphones with Parallels. Those entries document the former product’s capabilities; they do not show that the product remains available or supported today. They also do not guarantee that another virtual-machine product will provide the same peripheral integration.

| Question | If your answer is yes | Likely direction |
|---|---|---|
| Do you already have an accessible Windows computer? | You can install and maintain the application there | Evaluate Chrome Remote Desktop first |
| Does the publisher provide a Linux edition? | The application may run in ChromeOS’s Debian environment | Evaluate Linux, then test required features |
| Must the application work with no network? | Remote delivery is unsuitable during offline periods | Look for a supported local Linux edition or use the Windows computer directly |
| Is the Chromebook managed by a school or employer? | Linux, remote desktop, accounts, and virtualization may be policy-controlled | Ask the administrator for an approved route |
| Does the application need specialized hardware? | Input, drivers, or USB forwarding may determine success | Test the exact peripheral workflow before committing |
| Can an organization publish the application? | You may not need to own a Windows computer | Ask about an approved virtualization service such as the option Google names |
Troubleshoot by symptom
“Linux is missing from Settings”
Check whether the Chromebook is managed. Google says a work or school administrator can prevent Linux from being enabled. If the device is personally owned, confirm that ChromeOS is current and that the model supports the Linux feature; if the control remains absent, contact the device administrator or manufacturer rather than trying to install a Windows package into an unavailable container.

- Compact Design: Space-saving mini chassis fits neatly on or under your desk.
- Renewed Quality: Professionally tested and renewed to perform like new; may show minor cosmetic wear.
“The Windows installer opens nowhere”
A Windows installer is not a Linux package. Find out whether the publisher offers a Linux edition. If it does not, move to a Windows host through remote access or ask an organization about application virtualization.
“Chrome Remote Desktop cannot find the computer”
- Confirm that the Windows host is powered on, connected, and configured for remote access.
- Check that the Chromebook has internet access and that you are signed in with the authorized account.
- Test from a different network if a school, business, hotel, or public network may be blocking the connection.
- Ask the administrator whether managed-account policy prohibits remote desktop.
“The session connects, but the app cannot use a device”
Separate the application problem from the remote-session problem. Test the device directly on the Windows host, then check whether the remote route supports that kind of peripheral. Historical Parallels documentation mentioned USB devices, displays, keyboards, mice, webcams, and microphones, but those details cannot be transferred to Chrome Remote Desktop or treated as current Parallels support.
“A guide tells me to install Parallels”
Check its publication date and product status. Google’s documented support deadline for existing Parallels Desktop for ChromeOS customers was April 21, 2026. A guide that omits the discontinuation may describe a historical deployment, not an available solution.
A practical selection workflow
- Write down the exact Windows application, edition, plug-ins, files, and peripherals you need.
- Ask the publisher whether a supported Linux edition exists. If yes, compare its feature list with your requirements.
- If no Linux edition exists, identify a Windows computer you can legally and reliably use, then test Chrome Remote Desktop on the network where you will work.
- If the application belongs to a job or school, ask whether it is already available through an approved virtualization service. Obtain the service’s offline, peripheral, and data-handling rules.
- Run a complete trial: sign in, open representative files, print or export if required, use every needed peripheral, and recover after a network interruption.
- Choose the route whose limitations you can accept. Do not treat a discontinued product or an unverified compatibility claim as a production plan.
What to expect from each approach
Linux is the only option in this list that can provide a genuinely local application experience on ChromeOS, and only when the application has a suitable Linux release. Remote desktop is often the quickest way to reach an existing Windows program, but the program remains dependent on a separate, available host and an internet connection. Application virtualization can remove the need to own that host, yet availability and compatibility are controlled by the organization or provider. Parallels belongs in the history of ChromeOS enterprise deployments, not in a current purchasing decision.
