Short answer: As of October 13, 2026, there is no general, consumer-ready PS5 compatibility layer that lets you run arbitrary PlayStation 5 games locally on a Windows or Linux PC. AnyPS5 is an experimental porting project, not a one-click emulator. For a dependable way to play your PS5 library on a computer today, use Sony’s PS Remote Play: the game runs on a required PS5 console and is streamed to the PC.
What you can do right now
There are three distinctly different ways people describe “playing PS5 games on PC,” and they should not be treated as interchangeable:
- PS Remote Play: Sony’s supported method. Your PS5 runs the game, while the PC receives the video and sends controller input.
- PlayStation Plus on PC: Sony’s separate PC application and subscription service. Availability and catalog depend on Sony’s current terms and your region; it is not local execution of PS5 game files.
- An experimental compatibility layer such as AnyPS5: Software intended to adapt PS5 executables to Windows or Linux. It is still a development project with very limited verified game compatibility.
If your question is “Can I play my PS5 games on a computer without owning a console?”, the practical answer is no. Remote Play requires a PS5, and the experimental software available in 2026 is not a dependable general substitute.

What a PS5 compatibility layer actually does
A compatibility layer is software that translates or reimplements the operating-system and graphics behavior a console program expects so that the program can run against a different operating system and hardware stack. That is different from simply installing a PC version and different again from streaming a game from a console.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
AnyPS5 describes itself as an automatic porting tool for PS5 executables on Linux and Windows. The PS5 uses an x86-64 CPU architecture, which can reduce one major barrier when adapting code to a PC. It does not remove the harder work: PS5 system libraries must be reproduced, and proprietary graphics operations must be translated to APIs and drivers available on a PC. A headline saying that a title “runs natively” can therefore hide substantial translation and reimplementation underneath.
AnyPS5 is not a universal emulator that recreates every component of a PS5 environment. It is not a one-click installer for every console release, and a project milestone does not mean that commercial games will boot, render correctly, maintain stable frame rates or accept all required peripherals.
How far AnyPS5 had progressed in October 2026
The most useful public figures are engineering-coverage measurements, not a percentage of games that work. Tom’s Hardware reported on October 10, 2026 that the project’s tracker showed all 1,166 of the 1,166 tracked RDNA shader instructions implemented. That means the decoder recognizes the instructions included in that tracker. It does not prove that every graphics feature is translated correctly, that untracked behavior is supported or that a game using those instructions will be playable.

This is coverage of functions declared in the codebase, not an 84.69-percent game-compatibility rate. A single title may depend on an unimplemented function, an incomplete graphics path, timing behavior, copy protection or hardware behavior that the tracker does not measure.

At that time, the project’s compatibility list identified one verified playable title, a simple 2D platformer. Technically demanding games were still reported with rendering defects, instability or poor performance. Because the list can change quickly, check the current compatibility list and release notes immediately before attempting a specific game. No named title should be assumed compatible solely because a progress number has increased.

Option 1: use PS Remote Play (the practical supported route)
PS Remote Play streams a game installed on a PS5 or PS4 to a supported device, including a PC. The console performs the game’s CPU and GPU work. The computer is the display and control endpoint, so this method does not convert a PS5 game into a local Windows or Linux application.
Requirements
- A PS5 or PS4 console connected to broadband.
- A compatible Windows or macOS computer and Sony’s current PS Remote Play application.
- A PlayStation account used with the console.
- A game that supports Remote Play.
- A compatible controller or supported touch controls where available.
- A network connection between the console and the computer. Sony lists at least 5 Mbps and recommends a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better experience.
Sony lists DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers for Remote Play. A DualSense is an optional accessory for the PC setup; it does not replace the PS5, which remains required.

- Connect the PS5 to your broadband network and sign in with the PlayStation account you intend to use on the computer.
- On the console, open Settings, locate the System section and enable the Remote Play option. Sony may adjust menu wording in future system software, so use the Remote Play entry in the current System settings if labels differ.
- Confirm that the game you want to play is installed on the console and is eligible for Remote Play.
Set up the computer
- Install Sony’s current PS Remote Play application for your computer’s supported operating system.
- Launch the application and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
- Connect a supported controller to the computer. A wired connection can simplify initial troubleshooting; wireless support depends on the controller and computer configuration.
- Choose the PS5 shown by the application and wait for the connection to establish. The game continues to execute on the console while its video and audio are delivered to the PC.
What Remote Play cannot do
Remote Play is not compatible with every situation. Sony excludes certain games that require PlayStation VR or other additional peripherals. Games that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium cloud-streaming catalog are also not compatible with Remote Play. A game must be installed and running on the console for this route.

Network expectations and latency
The 5 Mbps figure is Sony’s minimum stated requirement, not a promise of perfect image quality or input response. Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. The connection must carry the stream in both directions: video and audio travel from the PS5, while controller input travels back to it.
Bandwidth is only one part of the result. A congested Wi-Fi network, interference, high round-trip latency or packet loss can make controls feel delayed even when a speed test reports more than 15 Mbps. If possible, connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet and place the computer on a strong, uncongested connection. Close downloads and video streams on the same network before judging performance.
Remote Play troubleshooting branches
- The PS5 does not appear: Verify that Remote Play is enabled, the console is powered on or available according to Sony’s Remote Play requirements, both devices have internet access and both applications use the same account.
- The picture is blurry or keeps lowering quality: Test the connection at the console and PC, stop competing traffic and move the computer to a stronger network connection. A speed result below Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum is insufficient; results near the minimum may still produce a poor stream.
- Controls feel delayed: Reduce local network congestion, prefer wired networking where practical and use a directly connected controller. Latency cannot be removed entirely because the game is executing on another device.
- A particular game refuses to start: Check whether it requires VR or another excluded peripheral, and confirm that it is installed locally on the PS5 rather than available only through a cloud-streaming catalog.
Option 2: PlayStation Plus on PC
Sony also provides a PlayStation Plus application for PC. This is a separate subscription and service route, with catalog availability governed by Sony’s current plan terms and your region. It should not be described as a PS5 compatibility layer, an emulator or a way to execute PS5 game files locally.
The PC application may support some third-party controllers that use the XInput standard, but Sony does not guarantee complete compatibility for those devices. If a controller is important to your setup, use one of the controller families Sony lists for the service or verify behavior with your exact model before relying on it.

Because subscription catalogs, supported devices and streaming rights can change, read the current PlayStation Plus PC requirements in your region before subscribing. A catalog listing also does not imply that every PS5 release is available on PC through the service.
Option 3: experiment with AnyPS5
AnyPS5 is relevant if you are technically experienced and want to follow development, contribute code, study interoperability or experiment with software you are legally entitled to use. It is not a finished consumer product. Expect incomplete system behavior, game-specific failures, graphics problems and performance that can change between builds.
The project README states: “This project is intended for interoperability, research, preservation, and compatibility purposes.” That statement describes the project’s purpose; it is not a guarantee that a commercial game will run.

- Read the project README, current build instructions and release notes for your operating system.
- Check the live compatibility list for the exact game version you own. Do not infer support from shader or library percentages.
- Use only software and game data you are legally entitled to use. Do not bypass encryption, defeat access controls or obtain unauthorized game files.
- Back up important PC data before using experimental software, and avoid installing untrusted builds on a machine containing sensitive information.
- Record the project version, operating system, graphics driver and game build when reporting a problem; compatibility can change with any of them.
What a successful launch would still mean
A title that boots is not necessarily playable. Test for correct rendering in menus and gameplay, stable operation over a meaningful session, working audio, functional saves, acceptable performance and support for required input devices. A project list entry may represent a particular build and configuration, not a universal result on every PC.

Do not confuse PS5 projects with PS4 emulators
Some search results combine several unrelated projects. shadPS4 is explicitly a PlayStation 4 emulator, not a PS5 compatibility layer. RPCSX describes itself as an experimental PS4/PS5 emulator; its FAQ reports a limited state with test samples and a handful of titles playable in-game while its compatibility table is still being developed. Neither description should be read as a promise of broad PS5 game support on a PC.
When evaluating a project, check which console generation it actually targets, whether it runs executables locally or streams from hardware, and whether its compatibility list covers your specific title. Similar names and “PS4/PS5” wording can otherwise lead to the wrong download or an unrealistic expectation.
Which method fits your goal?
| Method | PS5 console required | Where the game runs | Compatibility today | Network dependence | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS Remote Play | Yes | On the PS5; streamed to the PC | Eligible installed games, with exclusions for certain VR or peripheral-dependent titles | Required; Sony states 5 Mbps minimum and recommends 15 Mbps or more | Official Sony feature |
| PlayStation Plus on PC | Depends on the service and catalog terms | Through Sony’s PC service rather than local PS5-file execution | Varies by plan, region and current catalog | Depends on the service method and connection | Official Sony application and subscription service |
| AnyPS5 | No console is the intended local-execution goal | Adapted locally on Windows or Linux when supported | Experimental; one verified playable title was reported on October 10, 2026 | Not inherently required for local execution, although downloads and updates need connectivity | Experimental project |
Can a powerful gaming PC solve the problem?
More CPU or GPU performance does not by itself turn a PS5 executable into a Windows or Linux game. The compatibility layer still has to supply the expected system libraries, graphics behavior, synchronization and other platform services. A faster computer may improve performance after those pieces work, but it cannot compensate for an unimplemented function or an incorrect translation path.
For the same reason, buying a new graphics card is not a supported way to unlock arbitrary PS5 games. AnyPS5’s shader and library figures measure project implementation, not a hardware requirement that a particular PC can satisfy.
Controller and peripheral planning
For Remote Play, choose a controller supported by Sony: DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense or DualSense Edge. The DualSense is a sensible optional choice when you want a controller that matches the PS5 experience, but purchasing it does not provide access to PS5 games without the console.
Check peripherals before troubleshooting a game. A title that depends on VR hardware or another special accessory may be excluded from Remote Play, and an experimental compatibility layer may not implement that device at all. A standard gamepad working in the PC operating system does not prove that a particular console title will recognize every feature.
How to check a claim that a game “works”
- Identify the exact project and console generation. Confirm that it is a PS5 project rather than a PS4 emulator or a streaming application.
- Read the current compatibility-list entry for the title, including the tested project version and any required settings.
- Look for evidence beyond a boot screenshot: rendering, audio, controls, saves, stability and sustained performance.
- Compare the report date with the current release. A fast-moving project can gain or lose compatibility after a graphics-driver, game or project update.
- Keep a supported fallback. If the goal is simply to play, Remote Play is the dependable route when you own a PS5 and have the required network connection.
Bottom line for PC players
There is no general PS5 emulator or compatibility layer that makes an arbitrary PS5 library run reliably on a PC as of October 2026. AnyPS5 demonstrates active engineering progress, but its 1,166-shader and 84.69-percent library figures are implementation milestones, not game-compatibility percentages, and only one verified playable title was reported at the cited October 10 status point. Use Sony Remote Play when you want to play your installed games on a computer now; accept that the PS5 remains required and that streaming quality depends on the network.
