To run an older game on Windows 11, first check for a publisher update, then run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. If needed, try the game’s Compatibility tab, verify DirectX and Windows updates, and check whether Windows is in S mode. These steps can resolve some Windows compatibility problems, but they cannot guarantee a fix for a game’s outdated installer, copy protection, or online-service requirements.
Start with a publisher update
Before changing Windows settings, check the game publisher’s support site for an update or compatibility note. Microsoft recommends checking the publisher for an updated version when an app did not come from Microsoft Store. Older software may stop working as Windows changes its architecture, security features, or system requirements. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10.
Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Follow the prompts to choose the game or program and test the suggested settings.
This is Microsoft’s current first-line Windows 11 route for an older program that lacks an update. If the game launches successfully after a suggested change, test the parts that previously failed before treating the problem as resolved.
Try the Compatibility tab if the troubleshooter does not help
You can also set a compatibility mode for a game executable or shortcut:

- Right-click the game’s executable file or shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for, then choose a Windows version to test.
- Select Apply, then OK, and try starting the game.
The manual procedure is documented in a legacy Microsoft game-troubleshooting article, which uses Windows 98/Windows Me as its example. Treat that as background for the Compatibility tab, not as a recommendation that one particular older Windows version will work for every game. If a setting makes things worse, return to the tab and clear the compatibility-mode selection.
Check DirectX and Windows updates
See which DirectX version Windows reports
- Type
dxdiagin Windows Search and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. - On the System tab, check the DirectX version.
Microsoft says Windows 11 already includes the latest DirectX version available for that release; use Windows Update to get the latest version applicable to your Windows installation. The Microsoft DirectX guidance explains how to check it. This does not identify which older runtime, if any, a particular game requires.

Install available Windows and driver updates
Open Start > Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Microsoft also recommends getting driver updates through Windows Update when problems persist. Windows 11’s baseline graphics requirement is DirectX 12 or later with a WDDM 2.0 driver, but meeting that requirement does not establish that a specific older game will run.

Check whether Windows 11 is in S mode
S mode permits only apps from Microsoft Store, so it can prevent installing a game obtained elsewhere. Microsoft also notes that some games may not work in S mode, including games that rely on anti-cheat drivers or OpenGL above 1.1. See Microsoft’s S mode FAQ for details.

Switching out of S mode is permanent: Microsoft says you cannot switch back. Check the game’s requirements and the consequences before considering that change; it is not a reversible troubleshooting toggle.

Compatibility mode changes how Windows handles some older programs, but it is not a universal repair. If the same game still fails, note the exact title, where you installed it from, what happens, and any error message, then consult the publisher’s support information. The problem may involve an old installer, a missing legacy component, disc checks or copy protection, graphics dependencies, anti-cheat, or discontinued multiplayer services. Which of these applies cannot be determined without the specific game and failure.

- Installer will not run: check the publisher’s current installation instructions or supported release.
- Game installs but will not launch: record the error and check publisher support for game-specific requirements.
- Graphics or sound fail: check Windows and driver updates, then confirm the game’s documented dependencies.
- Multiplayer fails: check whether the publisher still supports the game’s online services.
