Multiverse-Core lets one Java Edition server host several independent Minecraft worlds. Install it on a Bukkit-compatible server such as Paper or Spigot, import existing world folders with /mv import, generate new worlds with /mv create, and move between them with /mv tp. Add Multiverse-Inventories when players need separate inventories, and use the portal addons when command-only travel is not enough.
What Multiverse does (and what it does not)
Multiverse-Core is a Bukkit-family plugin that registers and manages multiple worlds inside one Java server process. A single server can therefore have, for example, a survival overworld, a creative test world, a resource-gathering world, a Nether, and an End without making players join separate server addresses.

Core world management includes importing folders, creating worlds through the Bukkit world-generation API, teleporting players, setting spawns, applying per-world rules, and controlling access with permissions. The plugin does not replace the server software and does not create terrain with its own generator. Its documentation explains that Multiverse-Core makes calls to the Bukkit API to create worlds; the actual terrain generation is performed by the server and any generator plugin you specify.
Multiverse also does not automatically infer the intended environment of an existing folder. A folder could represent a normal overworld, a Nether, an End, or a custom setup, so you must tell Multiverse which environment to register.

Requirements and preparation
Use a compatible Java server
- Run a Java Edition server based on the Bukkit plugin API, such as Paper or Spigot.
- Download a Multiverse-Core build that matches the Minecraft and server version you are running. There is no single compatibility matrix that applies to every release; check the release information for the exact build.
- Have console access or an account with permission to install plugins and run Multiverse commands.
- Have enough disk space for every world. Each generated or imported world is a separate directory and can grow as players explore.
Back up before touching world files
Stop the server before copying, replacing, renaming, or editing a world folder. Make a complete external backup of the server directory, including world folders, plugin configuration, player data, and server settings. Keep folder names stable after import. If you want a friendlier name in chat or menus, use a Multiverse alias instead of renaming the physical folder; the Multiverse basics documentation recommends this approach because other files and tools may still refer to the original folder name.
Install Multiverse-Core
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Place the Multiverse-Core plugin JAR in the server’s
pluginsdirectory. Do not unzip the JAR. - Start the server and watch the console during startup. Look for a successful enable message and check for dependency, Java, or version errors.
- Join with an operator account, or grant the required permissions through your server’s permissions plugin.
- Run a harmless command such as
/mv listto confirm that Multiverse is responding and that the default world is registered.
Install only the Multiverse addons you actually need. Addons must be compatible with both your Minecraft/server version and the Multiverse-Core build; an addon built for another API version can fail independently even when Core loads correctly.

Importing is the right workflow when you already have a map from another server, a downloaded adventure map, or a backup you want to make playable alongside your main world.
1. Copy the folder while the server is stopped
Place the complete world directory directly in the server’s main directory, alongside the existing world folders. The directory must contain the normal world data, such as the region and player-data folders. Do not copy only the region directory or rename files inside the map.
2. Register it with the correct environment
Start the server, then run this command from the console or in-game with sufficient permission:
/mv import WORLD ENV
Replace WORLD with the exact folder name and replace ENV with one of:
NORMALfor an overworld-style dimension.NETHERfor Nether terrain and rules.ENDfor End terrain and rules.
For example, a folder named skyblock_island intended to behave as an overworld would be registered with /mv import skyblock_island NORMAL.

3. Supply generator information when the map requires it
The command reference requires correct environment and generator information for an imported world. Do not invent a generator value or reuse one from another map. If the world was produced by a custom generator, identify that generator and use the syntax required by its documentation. An incorrect generator can cause registration failures or produce a world that does not match the map’s intended terrain.
4. Repeat and verify
Repeat the import command for each existing folder. Confirm the result with /mv list, then teleport to the world with /mv tp WORLD. Walk around, check that structures and redstone behave as expected, and set a safe spawn before opening it to players.
Create a new world
Use /mv create when you want Multiverse and the server to generate a fresh world rather than register an existing directory.

The minimum form is:
/mv create NAME ENV
For a new creative overworld named creative, use:
/mv create creative NORMAL
You can select NETHER or END instead of NORMAL when that dimension is the intended world type.
Seed and generator options
Optional arguments can specify a seed and a custom generator:
/mv create NAME NORMAL -s SEED -g GENERATOR[:ID]
-s SEEDsupplies the seed value. Use the exact seed format accepted by your server version.-g GENERATOR[:ID]selects a generator plugin and, where supported, a generator identifier.
World generation can take considerably longer than importing a folder because terrain must be created. Keep the console visible, avoid stopping the server while generation is active, and wait for the command to finish before testing teleportation. If generation fails, read the first error in the console; later stack traces are often consequences rather than the cause.
Teleport between worlds and set spawns

/mv tp PLAYER WORLD
The sender must be able to access the destination themselves before teleporting another player there. This prevents an administrator from bypassing a destination restriction simply by targeting someone else.
Set a safe spawn in every public world
Enter each world, stand on a protected, well-lit block with enough headroom, and run /mv set spawn. Test the result with /mv spawn using a non-operator account. A spawn that works in a creative test map may be unsafe in survival, near lava, or inside a hostile-mob area, so check each world independently.
Control who can enter a world
Multiverse permissions are handled through the permissions plugin already used by your server. The most important nodes are:

If enforceaccess is enabled, a player needs access permission for each destination. Without enforcement, the permissions reference says the default behavior is access to all worlds. Decide which behavior fits your server, configure the nodes through your permissions plugin, and test with a non-operator account. Operators can bypass restrictions, so an operator test alone does not prove that your access policy works.
Configure rules separately for each world
Multiverse-Core can apply per-world settings such as game mode, entity or mob spawning, aliases, and PvP-related behavior. This lets one server combine different play styles without changing global server properties every time a player travels.
For example, the basics documentation demonstrates disabling monsters in a world with:
/mv modify set monsters false
Use the exact property name supported by your Multiverse-Core version, then test the setting in the target world. A world rule is not automatically a substitute for a protection plugin: it may control spawning or a game rule while leaving building, container access, or region protection unchanged.

Separate inventories, statistics, and locations
Multiverse-Core alone does not provide independent inventories for each world. If a player should have one set of items in survival and another in creative, install Multiverse-Inventories and configure world groups.
Multiverse-Inventories can separate or share, according to its configuration:
- Inventory contents and armor.
- Player statistics.
- Last location.
- Hunger and health.
- Experience.
- Bed-spawn data.
Choose the sharing model deliberately. A common design is to isolate a creative world from survival while sharing a group of related survival worlds. Test transfers with a disposable account: carry a clearly identifiable item into each world, change health and experience, log out, and return to verify that the intended data set is restored.
Use portals instead of commands when appropriate
For command-only travel, /mv tp is sufficient and easy to audit. If players should walk through a defined gateway, install Multiverse-Portals. It provides custom portal destinations and portal-specific permission restrictions.
Install Multiverse-NetherPortals when you need separate Nether and End worlds associated with individual overworlds. This is useful when two survival worlds must not share the same Nether terrain or coordinate links. Verify the addon versions against Core and your server before enabling portal travel, then test both directions, death respawns, and access restrictions.

Reload, unload, remove, clone, and delete safely
These commands have different consequences. Treat delete as irreversible from the server’s point of view.

The delete command requires a follow-up /mv confirm within the confirmation window. Do not run it as a cleanup shortcut. Stop the server and make an external backup before deleting, cloning, upgrading the server version, or performing bulk world edits.

Choose a world layout that fits your server

There is no authoritative universal maximum number of worlds, player capacity, or performance improvement published for Multiverse. The practical limit depends on your server hardware, view and simulation distances, plugin load, world activity, and how many worlds are kept active. Measure your own server rather than relying on a fixed world-count promise. Keep rarely used worlds unloaded when your operating procedure permits it, and monitor memory, tick time, storage growth, and console warnings after adding a busy world.
Troubleshooting common failures
“World not found” after copying a folder
- Confirm the folder is in the server directory, not inside
pluginsor an extra nested folder. - Check spelling and capitalization in
/mv import WORLD ENV. - Make sure the server was restarted after copying files while it was stopped.
- Run
/mv listto distinguish an unregistered folder from a registered but inaccessible world.
Import fails or the map behaves incorrectly
- Verify that
NORMAL,NETHER, orENDmatches the map’s intended dimension. - Identify any custom generator used to create the map and provide the correct generator information; do not guess.
- Restore from backup if the folder was partially copied or modified while the server was running.
New-world creation appears stuck
Generation is slower than registration because terrain is being created. Watch the console for progress or an error, avoid issuing repeated create commands with the same name, and wait for the operation to finish. If an error appears, resolve the first generator or version message before retrying.
Players can teleport when they should not
Check whether enforceaccess is enabled, inspect both world-access and teleport nodes, and test with a non-operator account. Remember that permission inheritance can grant a broader node than the one you intended to assign.
Inventory follows a player between worlds
This is expected with Core alone. Install and configure Multiverse-Inventories, define the worlds or groups that should share data, and test inventory, health, hunger, experience, location, and bed-spawn behavior separately.
Portals lead to the wrong dimension
Confirm that the destination configured by Multiverse-Portals is the intended world name and that any Nether/End pairing is configured through Multiverse-NetherPortals. Test from both directions and check that players have permission to use the destination.
A removed world still occupies disk space
/mv remove WORLD deliberately retains the physical folder. Delete or archive that folder manually only after stopping the server and verifying a backup. Use /mv delete WORLD only when you intend Multiverse to remove the folder and you are prepared to confirm the operation.
A safe operating pattern
For a dependable multi-world server, keep the workflow consistent: back up while stopped, install a version-matched Core build, import or create one world at a time, verify it with /mv list, set and test its spawn, apply per-world rules, then add access permissions. Add Multiverse-Inventories or portal addons only after the Core workflow works, because separating addon configuration from world registration makes failures easier to diagnose. Record each world’s folder name, environment, generator, access group, inventory group, and backup date so future administrators can maintain the server without guessing.
