Yes—one DisplayPort connection can carry independent video streams to multiple monitors using Multi-Stream Transport (MST). Connect compatible monitors in a daisy chain, or connect an MST hub to the computer and attach each monitor to the hub. The computer, connection path, operating system, and chosen display modes must all support the setup; a basic splitter that mirrors a signal will not create separate desktops.
How one DisplayPort connection drives multiple screens
DisplayPort MST lets a compatible source send multiple display streams through one link. The streams share that link’s capacity, so the number of screens and the resolution and refresh rate available on each depend on the specific computer, connection hardware, monitors, and display settings.
VESA’s 2014 announcement for DisplayPort 1.3 described two 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) displays simultaneously for specified VESA Coordinated Video Timing and uncompressed modes. That standards capability is not a promise that every computer, hub, or monitor can run two 4K screens at any refresh rate. VESA’s current FAQ lists a maximum DisplayPort 2.1b payload of 77.37 Gbps; that link figure likewise does not establish support for a particular device combination. See VESA’s DisplayPort FAQ and its DisplayPort 1.3 announcement.

Daisy-chain monitors
Run a cable from the computer’s DisplayPort output to the first monitor’s DisplayPort input, then connect the first monitor’s DisplayPort output to the next monitor’s input. This requires a compatible source and monitors that support MST; the first monitor also needs a downstream DisplayPort output. Follow the monitor maker’s instructions to enable DisplayPort 1.2 or MST if required. Microsoft describes this arrangement as the first display passing the signal to the second in its Surface external-display troubleshooting guidance.

Use a DisplayPort MST hub
Connect an MST hub to a compatible DisplayPort output, then connect each monitor to a separate hub output. This is often the practical choice when the monitors lack downstream DisplayPort outputs. Check that the computer can supply multiple independent streams and that the hub supports the output types and display modes you need.
Use a USB-C or Thunderbolt dock
A dock can carry DisplayPort video over a USB-C connection when the computer’s port supports video and the dock provides the needed display outputs. Some docks can also carry USB data and charging power. VESA explains the DisplayPort Alt Mode path in its DisplayPort FAQ. A USB-only hub is not a video dock, and a USB-C connector by itself does not confirm video support. Check the computer and dock specifications before connecting displays.

- Multi-Screen Display Adapter: Display port Splitter 3 Monitors allows the DP signal to be mirrored (SST) or expanded (MST) from one source to 2 DP monitors and 1 HDMI monitor, displaying a clear 4K UHD picture while transmitting high quality audio and video. Note: Be sure to connect the Micro USB cable for optimal display. Do not use with any docking station/hub/KVM, only unidirectional 1 in 3 out transfer. This product does not support laptops as a signal source.
- Important Note! ! !: 1. The splitter requires that your computer must support DP1.2 version of the graphics card or above; 2. Please use DP1.4 or above the standard DP cable, and the length of the DP cable does not exceed 1.8M; 3. MacOS system does not support MST, that is, it does not support the expansion of two different displays. 4. Does not support the use of HDMI to DP docking station or adapter cable to connect the computer to the product's DP input port; 5. DP cable is not included in the package. 6. Please consult customer service before placing an order to ensure compatibility between your computer and the product
- 4K Ultra High Definition Resolution: Displayport MST Hub 3 Monitors supports DP1.4 inputs for simultaneous output of 4K60Hz resolution when 3 monitors are connected at the same time, and dual 4K120Hz when 2 DP outputs are connected individually. HDMI output ports support up to 4K60Hz only. It is backward-compatible with 2K120Hz/60Hz and 1080P120hz/60Hz. Vivid images give you more stunning on-screen color and contrast. The final resolution depends on your computer and cables

- Optional Connection Length: The Displayport Monirtor Splitter input can be connected to DP cables of different lengths to meet your needs for different connection distances. It is recommended that the length of the input cable does not exceed 1.8 meters and the length of the output cable does not exceed 2 meters to ensure the stability of the video transmission. DP cable is not included in the package, please prepare your own video cable for connection
Check compatibility before you buy or connect
- Computer and graphics limits: Confirm that the specific output and graphics hardware support MST or the relevant multi-display path, and check the computer’s maximum supported display count. A hub or chain does not raise that overall limit. Microsoft notes that the display adapter may limit the number of screens; Apple says the supported total depends on Mac model and display modes. Consult Microsoft’s guidance or Apple’s guide to connecting displays to a Mac for the relevant device.
- Monitor ports and MST support: For a chain, verify that the first monitor has a DisplayPort output and supports MST, and confirm the downstream behavior in the exact monitor documentation.
- Display modes and bandwidth: Look up the intended resolution and refresh rate for every screen across the computer, hub or dock, and monitors. Resolution, refresh rate, color depth, chroma format, and compression all affect how much of the shared link capacity is used.
- Separate desktops rather than duplication: Make sure the device is an MST hub, not a simple splitter that duplicates one input. Microsoft specifically distinguishes splitters that show the same signal from MST arrangements that can pass a signal between displays in its external-display troubleshooting guidance.
Set up the monitors
- Choose the route: Use a daisy chain if the source and monitors support MST and the first monitor has a downstream DisplayPort output. Otherwise, consider an MST hub. Use a USB-C or Thunderbolt dock only if the computer supports video through that port and the dock supports the required screens.
- Connect the hardware: For a chain, connect the computer to the first monitor, then that monitor’s DisplayPort output to the next monitor. For a hub or dock, connect it to the computer and attach each monitor to a separate display output.
- Enable MST if needed: Check the monitor’s on-screen menu and manufacturer instructions for DisplayPort 1.2 or MST settings. The exact menu names vary by monitor.
- Configure the operating system: Open the display settings for your operating system and choose an extended desktop if you want separate workspaces rather than mirrored screens. Available display modes remain subject to the computer’s graphics and link limits.
- Validate each screen’s mode: Set the desired resolution and refresh rate for each display, then verify that the full combination works. If a mode is unavailable or a screen is unstable, lower the resolution or refresh rate and recheck the specifications of each part of the chain.
What determines the maximum number of displays?
There is no universal monitor count or resolution-and-refresh-rate maximum for “one DisplayPort cable.” The answer depends on the source’s display support, the DisplayPort link and its available bandwidth, the hub or monitor chain, operating-system limits, and the modes requested for all screens. For Macs in particular, Apple’s model-specific guidance is important: a hub or chain can connect multiple screens through one Thunderbolt port, but it does not increase the Mac’s overall supported display limit. See Apple’s Mac display connection guide.
