Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Coolify, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
Coolify can deploy one application to a primary server and additional standalone servers, creating a separate running instance on each machine. This is a deployment mechanism, not a traffic router: you need an external load balancer, DNS strategy, health checks, and shared application state if users should move safely between instances.
What a Coolify multi-server deployment actually does
A multi-server deployment attaches several Docker destinations to one Coolify application. The application keeps a Primary Server, while one or more additional servers receive the same release. Each destination runs its own container instance; Coolify does not form a cluster that automatically balances requests between them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The primary server, or a separately configured build server, creates the container image and publishes it to a registry. Every additional destination pulls that published image. The commit, rollback target, and image tag therefore stay aligned across the attached servers instead of being rebuilt independently on each machine.
Coolify is the control plane. It connects to the servers over SSH and runs Docker operations there. A user’s HTTP request does not travel through the Coolify dashboard; it reaches the reverse proxy and application on the resource server. This separation matters when you design firewalls, TLS, monitoring, and the public traffic path.

Why attaching servers does not load-balance traffic
Adding a second server gives you another application instance, but it does not tell clients where to send requests. To expose all instances through one hostname, place a cloud or external load balancer in front of them. Configure that service with the instances’ reachable addresses, a health-check endpoint, and a policy such as round-robin or least connections according to your workload.
Coolify does not create or manage that external load balancer. You remain responsible for the public DNS record, firewall and security-group rules, TLS termination or certificate distribution, health-check behavior, connection draining, monitoring, and capacity alerts. A deployment can succeed in Coolify while the public endpoint still sends traffic only to one machine or sends it to an unhealthy one.
A practical request path
- A client resolves your application hostname in DNS.
- The external load balancer selects a healthy server.
- The selected server’s reverse proxy (if enabled) terminates TLS or forwards the request to the application container.
- The application reads and writes state from services that are reachable from every instance, such as a shared database or object-storage service.
Test each server through the origin path you intend to use before adding it to the load balancer. This catches a bad certificate, closed port, incorrect proxy route, or application configuration difference before users encounter it.
Prerequisites and compatibility checks
Validate every destination in Coolify before attaching it. Each must be a standalone Docker destination that the configured SSH user can administer. Check the following items as a single readiness gate:
- CPU architecture: use the same architecture on every server, such as AMD64 on all destinations or ARM64 on all destinations. A single-architecture image built for one machine may not run on another architecture.
- Reverse proxy: when a server uses a proxy, use the same type on every proxied server: Traefik everywhere or Caddy everywhere. A server without a reverse proxy can still be attached, but you must provide its external routing and TLS behavior yourself.
- Reachability: the Coolify host must be able to connect to each destination over SSH, and each destination must be able to reach the container registry needed for pulls.
- Identical configuration: every instance must receive the same required environment variables, secrets, image tag, exposed ports, and runtime assumptions.
- Registry access: the primary or build server must be able to push the image, and every additional server must be able to pull it.
- Application state: sessions, uploads, queues, caches, and other mutable data must not depend on one container’s local filesystem.
Do not proceed merely because servers have similar specifications. Validate the actual Docker destination in Coolify and confirm that the same architecture and proxy arrangement will be used for the release.
Make the application safe to run horizontally
Two instances are useful only when either instance can serve the next request. Design the application so that the container is disposable and replaceable.

Move state to shared services
Store relational or document data in a database reachable from every application server. Put user uploads and generated files in shared object storage or another storage service available to all instances. Use a shared queue for background jobs and a shared cache when the application requires one. If sessions are stored in process memory or on a local disk, a user routed to a different instance may appear logged out or lose temporary data.
Make startup and shutdown predictable
Use the same image and configuration on every destination. Startup should recreate the container without relying on files left by a previous deployment. Background workers should handle duplicate delivery where the queue can retry work, and shutdown should stop accepting new work cleanly when the load balancer removes a server.
Expose a health endpoint
Create a lightweight endpoint that reports whether the instance is ready to serve traffic. A readiness check should verify the dependencies that are essential for serving requests, while avoiding an expensive full application transaction on every probe. Configure the external load balancer to remove an instance when this check fails and to add it back only after the instance is ready again.
Understand the storage restriction
The current Coolify multi-server deployment feature cannot be used for an application that has persistent storage configured in Coolify. This is separate from using an external database or object-storage service: the restriction concerns persistent storage attached through the application configuration. Review the application’s storage settings before attempting to add destinations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrepare a container registry
Choose a registry repository that the primary server, any optional build server, and every additional destination can access. Set the application’s image to the complete repository name rather than a local-only image name. For example, a repository could be named registry.example.com/acme/web; use the exact path and tag conventions required by your registry.
Authenticate the SSH user configured in Coolify to that registry on every server that must push or pull. The build side needs push permission. Additional destinations need pull permission. If the registry is private, verify credentials and network access independently on each machine; a successful login on the primary server does not authenticate the other servers.

Decide how tags identify releases. Immutable tags tied to a commit make rollback and auditing clearer than repeatedly moving a single mutable tag. Whichever convention you choose, ensure the primary deployment publishes the tag that additional servers are expected to pull.
Step-by-step: attach servers and deploy
- Validate the destinations. In Coolify, add or open each Linux server and complete its validation. Confirm that it is recognized as a standalone Docker destination, that SSH access works, and that its architecture, proxy choice, firewall rules, and registry access match the other destinations.
- Set the image repository. Open the application and go to General. Set Container image to the full registry repository name, then save. The value must identify the image that the primary or build server will publish.
- Open the server assignment page. In the same application, open Servers. Under Add another server, choose a validated destination. Repeat the action for each additional server you want in this application deployment. The original destination remains labeled Primary Server.
- Start the deployment. Deploy the application normally. Coolify builds the image on the primary server or configured build server and pushes it to the registry. Each additional destination pulls the published image instead of rebuilding it locally.
- Watch every deployment log. Confirm that the build and registry push succeed, then inspect the pull and startup log for every attached server. Look for the expected image tag, environment configuration, port binding, and readiness result.
- Verify origins individually. Send requests to each server through the origin path you plan to use. Confirm TLS, proxy routing, application responses, database access, uploads, sessions, and background jobs on each instance.
- Add the instances to external routing. After origin tests pass, add the server addresses to your load balancer. Configure the DNS record, health check, TLS policy, firewall rules, monitoring, and alert thresholds outside Coolify.
Every attached server should report a running instance before you treat the deployment as complete. A green build on the primary does not prove that a destination pulled the image or started successfully.

An application-wide deploy, restart, or stop action includes all attached servers. A normal deployment keeps the image, commit, and rollback target aligned because additional destinations use the image published by the primary or build server.
The application’s Servers page also lets you operate on an individual destination. You can deploy to one server, stop it, promote it, or remove it. Promoting an additional server makes it the new primary and demotes the former primary. Use promotion when the current primary is unavailable or when you have deliberately selected another build and control point.
A stop operation attempts every attached server, even when one destination is unreachable. Treat an unreachable machine as an infrastructure incident rather than assuming that the global action stopped it. Check the machine directly and verify its container state before maintenance.
Pull-request previews are not deployed to additional destinations. If preview environments are part of your workflow, plan a separate preview destination strategy instead of assuming that the production server assignments will be reused.

Docker Compose and persistent-volume limitations
Docker Compose applications cannot be attached through the application’s Servers page. The multi-server workflow described here applies to an application that deploys a container image through Coolify’s supported application path, not to a Compose project that you expect Coolify to replicate automatically.
Persistent storage configured in Coolify also prevents use of the current multi-server deployment feature. Do not work around this by copying a local volume between machines during deployment: that creates divergent state and can corrupt data. Move the data to a service designed for shared access, or keep the application on a single destination until its storage model has been redesigned.
Operating the external traffic layer
DNS and TLS
Point the public hostname at the external load balancer, not at a single application server, when you intend to distribute traffic. Decide where TLS terminates. If the balancer terminates TLS, secure the balancer-to-server hop according to your security requirements. If each server terminates TLS, provision matching certificates and proxy configuration on every destination.
Recommended Free Tools
Health checks and draining
Use the readiness endpoint for health checks and set a failure policy that removes an unhealthy instance without taking healthy instances out of rotation. During deployment or maintenance, drain connections before stopping a server so long-lived requests can finish. Confirm that the balancer honors the drain state; Coolify cannot enforce that behavior in an external service it does not manage.
Network controls
Allow only the required public ports to the proxy or load balancer. Restrict direct application ports where possible. Permit SSH only from trusted administration sources and allow registry access from every machine that must pull or push. Ensure database and storage services accept connections from all application servers, using least-privilege credentials.
Observability
Collect logs and metrics with the server identity attached so you can distinguish an application defect from one bad destination. Alert on failed health checks, image-pull errors, container restarts, registry authentication failures, disk pressure, and capacity limits. A deployment dashboard alone cannot show whether the external balancer is routing correctly.

Troubleshooting common failures
The additional server never starts
- Check that the destination was validated and remains reachable over SSH.
- Inspect the pull log for a wrong repository path, missing tag, registry outage, or expired credential.
- Verify that the registry login was performed for the exact SSH user configured in Coolify.
- Compare CPU architecture with the image that was built.
- Confirm that required environment variables and secrets are present on the destination.
The image works on the primary but fails elsewhere
Compare the runtime configuration, proxy type, architecture, exposed ports, and host-level permissions. A successful local build does not guarantee that the published image contains every runtime asset or that the second server has the same network access. Pull the exact published tag manually for diagnosis, then inspect the container’s startup error.

This indicates state is tied to one container or host. Move sessions to a shared session store, uploads to shared object storage, and queues or caches to shared services. Do not add sticky sessions as the only fix unless you explicitly accept that a server failure can invalidate those sessions; shared state is the durable design for horizontal scaling.
The deployment is green but traffic reaches only one server
Inspect the DNS answer and load-balancer backend list. Confirm that every backend is enabled, healthy, listening on the expected port, and allowed by firewall rules. Send requests with a diagnostic response header or server identifier so you can see which instance answered. Coolify’s successful deployment does not alter external routing.
One server is unreachable during a global stop
Because the stop action attempts every attached destination, an unreachable host may still be running its container. Check the machine through its provider console or another administrative path, restore access, and verify the container state before declaring the application stopped.
Choosing between one server and several
| Decision axis | Single-server setup | Multi-server deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Operational simplicity | Fewer Docker destinations, registry pulls, proxies, and failure paths to manage. | More destinations to validate, monitor, update, and secure. |
| Capacity | Limited to the resources of one machine. | Can add independent application instances when the application is stateless and the external router can distribute requests. |
| Failure isolation | A host failure can remove the application from service. | A failed instance can be removed from rotation while others continue, provided shared dependencies remain available. |
| Traffic routing | One origin can be exposed directly or through a proxy. | Requires an external load balancer or equivalent routing layer; Coolify does not supply it. |
| Shared-state complexity | Local state is simpler, although backups are still necessary. | Sessions, uploads, queues, caches, and databases must be reachable and consistent across instances. |
| Build and registry overhead | A local deployment may not need a multi-destination image distribution workflow. | A registry accessible to the build side and every destination is required. |
| Infrastructure cost | Fewer servers and usually a simpler network footprint. | Additional servers and external routing add recurring infrastructure and administration costs. |
Coolify’s guidance is to start with the smallest setup that meets measured capacity or availability needs. Add destinations when you have a concrete scaling or failure-isolation requirement and have solved the shared-state and routing work that makes the extra instance useful.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Server providers and provisioning choices
You can attach manually administered Linux servers or provision servers through providers listed in Coolify’s server documentation, including Hetzner, DigitalOcean, and Vultr. Provider choice does not change the Coolify workflow: the resulting machine still must pass validation, expose the required administration path, use a compatible architecture and proxy, and reach the registry and shared services.
For a provider-managed installation, follow that provider’s current console or API process to create the machine, then activate and administer it over SSH. Keep provider credentials, SSH keys, firewall policy, and server replacement procedures documented outside the application so a failed machine can be replaced without guessing.
Pre-launch checklist
- All destinations are validated standalone Docker servers in Coolify.
- Every server uses the same CPU architecture.
- All proxied servers use the same reverse-proxy type, or the proxyless design is intentional.
- The application has no Coolify-configured persistent storage and is not a Docker Compose application attached through the Servers page.
- Sessions, uploads, queues, caches, and databases use shared services reachable from every instance.
- A readiness endpoint returns a useful health result.
- The full image repository is configured under General and saved.
- The Coolify SSH user can authenticate to the registry on every server that pushes or pulls.
- The primary or build server can push, and additional servers can pull, the exact release tag.
- Each destination has been tested through its intended origin path.
- The external load balancer, DNS, TLS, firewall rules, health checks, monitoring, and alerts are configured and tested.
- You have a documented promotion, rollback, and unreachable-server procedure.
When multi-server Coolify deployment is the right fit
Use this pattern when the application can run as interchangeable instances, its state lives in shared services, and you are prepared to operate an external traffic layer. It can provide more capacity and isolate an individual host failure, but those benefits come from the complete architecture rather than from attaching a server in Coolify alone.
Stay on one server when the application depends on local files, uses a Compose workflow that cannot be attached through the Servers page, or has not yet demonstrated a capacity or availability need. Redesign the state model and establish health-check and routing procedures before adding machines; otherwise, multi-server deployment increases operational complexity without delivering reliable scaling.
