The safest general-purpose setup is a Docker Compose project with the official mongo:8 image, a named volume mounted at /data/db, initialized credentials, and no publicly exposed database port. Start MongoDB with docker compose up -d, keep application traffic on Compose’s private network, and publish port 27017 only when you have a specific host-access requirement.
This guide shows the complete VPS workflow: prerequisites, a persistent Compose file, application connection strings, SSH-only administration, backups, upgrades, verification, and the failures that most often prevent a connection.

What this deployment does
A MongoDB container packages the server process and its dependencies, while Docker Compose defines how the service starts, where its files live, and which other containers can reach it. Compose creates a project network automatically, so containers in the same project can use the MongoDB service name instead of an IP address.
The container itself is disposable. The database files are not, provided you mount a persistent volume. In the configuration below, Docker manages a named volume called mongo-data and mounts it at MongoDB’s data directory, /data/db. Recreating the container therefore does not remove the files in that volume.

Persistence is not the same as backup. A failed VPS disk, accidental deletion, ransomware, or an unusable database can affect both the container and its local volume. You still need scheduled, MongoDB-aware backups copied to storage separate from the VPS.
Prerequisites and deployment decisions
- A Linux VPS with enough CPU, memory, and disk for your workload, plus room for indexes, logs, and backup staging.
- Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin installed from the package source appropriate for your Linux distribution.
- Administrative access to the VPS and a host firewall or cloud security group you can edit.
- A plan for where backups will be stored and how you will test a restore.
- A decision about network exposure: an application on the same VPS should use the private Compose network; an administrator on your workstation can use an SSH tunnel; a public 27017 listener should be exceptional.
After installation, confirm both components before creating the database project:

docker compose versionKeep the operating system, Docker Engine, and Compose plugin patched. A container does not remove the need to maintain the host kernel, firewall, SSH access, and storage.
Create the MongoDB Compose project
1. Make a dedicated directory
mkdir -p ~/mongodb-vps
cd ~/mongodb-vpsKeeping the Compose file, environment file, and operational notes together makes lifecycle commands predictable. Restrict access to this directory because it may contain credentials or backup scripts.
2. Store credentials outside committed YAML
Create a local .env file and replace the example values with a long, unique password:

mongo-data:The official image listens on port 27017 inside the container. The MONGO_INITDB_ROOT_USERNAME and MONGO_INITDB_ROOT_PASSWORD variables create the initial administrative account when MongoDB initializes an empty data directory. The named volume is declared at the bottom and mounted at /data/db.
There is deliberately no active ports entry. Without one, Docker does not publish MongoDB on the VPS’s network interfaces. Other containers in this Compose project can still reach it over the internal network.
4. Validate and start the service
Check the rendered Compose configuration before starting. This catches malformed YAML and missing substitutions:
docker compose configStart in detached mode and inspect the result:

docker logs mongodbA running container should appear in docker compose ps. The logs should show normal initialization or startup messages rather than a fatal configuration error. The service name in this file is mongodb; use that exact name in container-to-container connection strings.
How clients connect
Application in the same Compose project
A container on the same Compose network reaches MongoDB at mongodb:27017. It must not use 127.0.0.1: inside an application container, that address refers to the application container itself.
After creating an application-specific database user, an application connection string can look like this:
mongodb://app_user:app_password@mongodb:27017/appdb?authSource=adminThe authSource=admin parameter tells MongoDB where the user was created. If a password contains characters reserved by URI syntax, percent-encode those characters before placing the value in a connection string. Keep the URI in the application’s secret configuration, not in source code.

Example application service
An application can be added to the same Compose file. The example below demonstrates the network relationship; substitute your own image and application variables:

mongo-data:depends_on controls startup ordering, not database readiness. Your application should retry its MongoDB connection during startup and report a useful error if authentication or DNS resolution fails.
Host access through a localhost binding
If a tool on the VPS host must connect, uncomment the port mapping and keep the host side bound to loopback:

mongosh "mongodb://admin:replace-with-a-long-random-secret@127.0.0.1:27017/admin"Use the actual values from your environment file. A localhost binding is reachable only from the VPS itself, not directly from the public internet.

Administrative access from your workstation
For occasional remote administration, leave the database bound to localhost and create an SSH tunnel:
ssh -L 27017:127.0.0.1:27017 vps-user@your-vpsWhile that SSH session remains open, connect your local mongosh to 127.0.0.1:27017. The encrypted SSH connection carries traffic to the VPS’s loopback interface without opening MongoDB in the VPS firewall.
Secure the VPS and the database
Initialize authentication before exposure
Do not run an internet-exposed MongoDB instance without credentials. The official image’s root username and password variables are the minimum initialization step. Replace every example value before deployment and use a different secret for each environment.

Keep port 27017 private
- For an application on the same VPS, publish no host port at all; use the Compose network and the service name
mongodb. - For host-local tools, bind
127.0.0.1:27017:27017and use SSH tunneling for remote work. - If remote clients genuinely require direct access, restrict the VPS firewall and cloud security group to known source addresses. Do not treat a random high port as a substitute for authentication and firewall rules.
Limit privileges and protect secrets
Reserve the initialized root account for administration. Create application users with only the permissions their databases require, and place their credentials in the application’s secret configuration. Keep .env, Compose files containing secrets, and backup archives readable only by the accounts that need them.
Isolate services and maintain the host
Compose’s private network keeps service-to-service traffic separate from the public interface. Combine that isolation with least-privilege firewall rules, patched host software, strong SSH controls, and monitoring for disk usage and unexpected container restarts.
Persistence, lifecycle commands, and destructive operations
Inspect the named volume to confirm Docker created it:
docker volume ls
docker volume inspect mongodb-vps_mongo-dataThe exact volume name is normally prefixed with the Compose project name, so use the name shown by docker volume ls. Stopping or recreating the container does not remove this volume:

docker compose stop
docker compose up -dYou can remove the container definition while retaining the data:
docker compose down
docker compose up -dDo not use docker compose down -v unless you intentionally want Docker to delete the declared named volume and its database files. Treat that command as destructive.
A named volume protects against routine container replacement, not every failure. It is local to the VPS unless you copy its contents or a database dump elsewhere.

Back up MongoDB and test restoration
Create a logical backup
Schedule a MongoDB-aware backup rather than copying a live database directory as if it were ordinary application files. The following pattern runs mongodump inside the container and writes a compressed archive on the host:

--archive | gzip > "mongo-$(date +%F).archive.gz"This command assumes the two shell variables are exported in the session. Load them from a protected mechanism rather than typing the password into a shared shell history. Put the resulting archive on separate storage, apply a retention policy, and encrypt it according to your operational requirements.
Restore into a disposable test instance
A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Periodically restore an archive into a separate MongoDB instance or isolated project and verify that the application can read the expected collections. A command-line restore pattern is:

--archiveUse --drop only when you deliberately want collections in the target instance replaced; it is destructive. Test restoration separately from production so a mistake cannot erase the live database.
Define the recovery point
Decide how much data you can lose and how quickly the service must return. That decision determines dump frequency, off-host retention, storage capacity, and whether a single-container deployment is sufficient. A named volume alone provides neither a historical recovery point nor high availability.
Updating the MongoDB image safely
- Confirm a recent backup exists and that a restore test has succeeded.
- Read the MongoDB release notes and compatibility guidance for the version you intend to run. Do not assume that changing an image tag is a harmless patch.
- Record the current image tag and application connection settings so you can identify what changed.
- Pull and recreate the service during a planned maintenance window:
docker compose pull mongodb
docker compose up -d mongodb- Check
docker compose ps, reviewdocker logs mongodb, and run amongoshconnection test. - Exercise the application and watch error rates, latency, disk use, and memory use before declaring the update complete.
Pin an intentional image tag rather than silently tracking an unreviewed moving tag. If the new version fails, stop the service, restore the previous compatible tag, and follow your tested recovery procedure; do not delete the named volume while troubleshooting.
Verification checklist
- Container:
docker compose psshows the MongoDB service running. - Logs:
docker logs mongodbcontains startup messages without a fatal error. - Volume:
docker volume lsshows the expected named volume. - Authentication:
mongoshconnects with the initialized account and theadminauthentication database. - Network path: applications use
mongodb:27017; host tools use a deliberately published localhost port. - Exposure: the VPS firewall and security group do not allow unneeded inbound traffic to 27017.
- Recovery: an off-host backup exists and a restore has been demonstrated, not merely scheduled.
Troubleshooting common failures

Self-managed container or managed MongoDB?
A Docker deployment on your VPS gives you control over image versions, maintenance windows, network placement, and the host environment. It also makes you responsible for every operational layer. A managed MongoDB service shifts much of that work to the provider. The right choice depends on whether control or reduced administration is more important for this workload.

For a small application that already runs on one VPS and has an owner comfortable with backups and patching, the Compose pattern is straightforward. If losing the host would create unacceptable downtime or you cannot operate backups and upgrades, a managed service or a separately designed replica-set architecture deserves consideration.
Operational habits that prevent avoidable outages
- Keep the Compose file under version control, but keep secrets and backup archives out of the repository.
- Document the project directory, volume name, image tag, firewall rules, backup location, and restore command.
- Alert on failed backups, rising disk usage, repeated container restarts, and authentication or connection errors.
- Perform upgrades only after a tested backup and a compatibility review.
- Review who can reach the Docker socket and the VPS; Docker administration is effectively host-level access.
With credentials initialized, port 27017 kept private, a named volume mounted at /data/db, and tested off-host backups, MongoDB can run reliably as a Compose service on a VPS without making the database a public internet endpoint.
