As of October 9, 2026, there is no verified procedure for running Mistral Large 4 locally: Mistral has announced that it plans to release the weights by the end of October, but the weights, model card, license, and supported local-serving instructions are not yet available in the official materials cited here. The public preview runs on Mistral’s infrastructure, so using it is hosted inference—not local execution.
Once the release artifacts appear, use their documented runtime and tested requirements rather than estimating hardware from parameter counts. Until then, you can monitor Mistral’s announcement, model documentation, and inference repository; none currently establishes a working Large 4 download or launch command.
Can you run Mistral Large 4 locally now?
Not on the evidence available as of October 9, 2026. Mistral announced a public preview on October 6 and said it would release the weights by the end of October, along with more architecture and technical details. That is a planned release, not confirmation that downloadable weights or a local installation guide are already available. Check the official announcement for subsequent release updates.

The preview is served on Mistral’s infrastructure. Access to that preview does not mean the model is running on your computer, and its hosted features do not establish what a future local runtime will support.

What to verify before choosing software or hardware
When the weights are released, treat the model repository, model card, license, and runtime instructions as the source of truth. Verify each item below before downloading or buying hardware.
- Official weights and variants: Find the official model repository and identify the exact downloadable artifacts. Check whether Mistral provides variants such as quantized or reduced-precision weights; do not assume they exist.
- License: Read the license file and model card for the terms and restrictions that apply to your intended use.
- Supported runtime: Confirm which inference engine Mistral recommends, its minimum version, and any required companion libraries or model code. Verify that the runtime explicitly supports Large 4.
- System requirements: Look for published requirements covering accelerator type and count, memory, storage, host RAM, and download needs. Prefer requirements tied to a documented or tested configuration.
- Exact installation and launch steps: Follow commands from the official release instructions, including prerequisites and tested software versions. Do not substitute generic commands for another model.
- Local capabilities: Check which modalities, context length, tools, and other features work in the local runtime. API or hosted-preview capabilities do not automatically carry over.
- Test conditions: Note the hardware and software versions used in any reported test. A documented configuration is not proof that other systems will perform the same way.
Why parameter counts are not a hardware specification
Mistral’s October 6 announcement describes Large 4 as a 1-trillion-parameter model with 49 billion active parameters. Its official documentation reports 1.05 trillion total parameters and a 1.6-billion-parameter vision encoder, but its pages disagree on the active count: one says 49 billion and another says 52 billion. See the Large 4 documentation and the separate Large 4 model page.
These figures do not establish a VRAM requirement. Parameter counts alone do not specify weight precision, memory overhead, KV-cache needs, or whether a runtime can distribute work across multiple accelerators. Mistral’s documentation lists a 1-million-token context, but that does not confirm that local inference will support that context length or the same feature set. Wait for model-specific requirements rather than converting the published counts into a guessed workstation configuration.
Which software supports Mistral Large 4?
No Large 4 local runtime support is verified in the official materials cited here. Mistral’s mistral-inference repository includes installation and download examples for other Mistral models, and notes that installing xformers requires a GPU. Those general instructions do not confirm Large 4 compatibility, so they are not a verified Large 4 setup procedure.

Mistral’s inference overview says open-weight models can be downloaded from Hugging Face and hosted on customer hardware. That general guidance does not establish that a Large 4 repository is available or that a specific engine supports it.

Use the official release artifacts to determine whether a local deployment is possible for your system. Do not copy a command until it is shown to work with the exact Large 4 files and supported runtime version.

- Start with Mistral’s announcement and model documentation, then follow the official model repository and its linked license and runtime guidance.
- Compare documented hardware requirements with your existing system before considering an upgrade.
- Use a published download and launch command only when its prerequisites, software versions, and model variant match your setup.
- Keep local capabilities separate from hosted or API capabilities when checking context length, modalities, and tools.
Until those release details are published, there is no evidence-based GPU recommendation, tested download command, or verified local procedure for Large 4.
