You can use RamaLama to run a local language model on a Mac, but the right setup depends on whether you need Docker specifically or want documented Apple GPU access. Docker is a supported RamaLama container engine; the Mac GPU instructions describe Podman with the libkrun provider. On Apple silicon, RamaLama also documents a native MLX option that runs without a container.
Choose the Mac runtime that fits your setup

Choose Docker Desktop if Docker is a requirement and local GPU acceleration is not the deciding factor. If documented Mac GPU access through RamaLama is important, follow the Podman/libkrun route. For an Apple silicon Mac where containers are unnecessary, consider native MLX. The available documentation does not establish a model-quality or speed ranking among these paths.
Install RamaLama and run a model
RamaLama supports macOS and can use a container engine such as Docker or Podman to obtain and run model-serving images. Its general quick start provides this installer for Linux and macOS, as well as a sample model command:

If both Docker and Podman are installed, RamaLama’s CLI reference says it selects Podman by default. To choose an engine explicitly, set the engine to podman or docker in RamaLama’s configuration. Consult the CLI reference for the applicable setting and syntax.
Configure Podman for the documented Mac GPU path
RamaLama’s Mac GPU guide describes Podman with the libkrun machine provider. It is a distinct setup from installing Docker Desktop; having Docker installed does not configure this GPU path.

- Install Podman and follow RamaLama’s macOS guide.
- Set the Podman machine provider to
libkrun, following the guide’s current commands. - If you already created a Podman machine with another provider, check the guide before proceeding: the setup may require recreating that machine.
- Run a model through RamaLama using the configured Podman engine.
The Mac guide identifies this as the Podman GPU configuration. It does not establish that every model, Mac, or workload will have the same performance.

RamaLama’s native MLX route is for Apple silicon and does not use Docker or another container. The documented path requires the MLX dependency, the mlx-lm tool, and the --nocontainer option. Follow the macOS guide for the current installation and command details; do not apply this route to an Intel Mac.

RamaLama’s macOS guide estimates container performance at approximately 75–80% of native performance “at the time of writing.” The page is undated, and it does not provide benchmark methodology, so treat this as RamaLama’s qualified estimate—not a universal or independently verified result.
Select and locate a model
RamaLama accepts short model names and transport-qualified identifiers. Its documented sources include Hugging Face, Ollama, ModelScope, and OCI registries; identifiers can use prefixes such as huggingface://, ollama://, or oci://, as well as URLs. See the model documentation for supported sources and naming syntax.

Model files are pulled into local storage. In the default container path, RamaLama mounts models read-only into the runtime. The model and its serving image take disk space, so check available storage before pulling large files.
Plan disk space and Mac requirements
Docker Desktop stores Linux containers and images in a disk image file on the Mac filesystem. Its settings let you manage disk usage limits and the disk image location; see the Docker Desktop settings documentation and Mac FAQ. RamaLama’s downloaded model files also use local storage.

If internal storage is tight, an external SSD for Mac can provide additional room for model files or container data. The cited documentation does not set a minimum capacity or establish that an external drive improves inference speed.
Docker Desktop’s Mac documentation lists a supported macOS release and at least 4 GB of RAM as installation prerequisites, with separate downloads for Apple silicon and Intel. That 4 GB figure is an installation floor, not a recommendation or evidence that a particular LLM will run well on a 4 GB Mac. See the current Mac installation requirements before installing.
Understand the privacy boundary
For its documented default local run, RamaLama describes rootless containers, read-only model mounts, --network=none, and temporary container cleanup with --rm. Those settings describe local container execution; they do not make every way of using a model offline.
If you use a hosted model API instead, the request goes to that provider and bypasses the local container. The provider’s network and security practices then apply, so do not treat an API-backed run as equivalent to a local-only prompt. RamaLama documents the local execution behavior in its security documentation.
Check Docker Desktop licensing if you use it commercially
Docker’s Mac installer page says commercial use of Docker Desktop in larger enterprises—more than 250 employees or more than US$10 million in annual revenue—requires a paid subscription. Licensing terms can change; verify the current Docker Desktop Mac installation page and applicable terms before relying on this threshold.
