You can start classic Macintosh operating systems in a browser without buying a vintage Mac. Infinite Mac offers a broad catalog of classic System Software, Mac OS, Mac OS X, and NeXTStep releases, while macemu provides browser-based emulator pages including a System 7.5.3 instance. Choose a release, launch its virtual machine, and follow that instance’s on-screen instructions; available features differ by system.
How do I run a retro Mac OS in a browser?
- Choose a service. Start with Infinite Mac for a wide release catalog and configurable machines, or visit macemu for its emulator-specific pages.
- Select an operating system or instance. Infinite Mac lists classic releases and offers shortcuts for popular choices such as System 6, System 7, Mac OS 8, and Mac OS 9. On macemu, open the System 7.5.3 page to use its described Basilisk II instance.
- Launch the virtual machine. The service runs the selected system in the browser. Read the welcome instructions shown for that particular instance, especially before trying to load files or save changes.
- Explore the desktop and included software. Infinite Mac describes an “Infinite HD” containing representative software. The installed contents and features depend on the selected system.
The projects describe their emulators as WebAssembly builds of classic Mac emulation software. These are browser-based virtual machines, not a way to install an old operating system directly onto your computer.

System 7
Infinite Mac includes System 7 releases in its catalog. macemu’s dedicated System 7 page describes a System 7.5.3 browser instance running with Basilisk II; the page calls 7.5.3 a maintenance release for both older 68k Macs and Power Macintosh systems. Infinite Mac lists Mac OS 9 among its popular shortcuts. macemu’s project overview describes SheepShaver as its emulator for the PowerPC era of Mac OS 8 and 9. What happens to files and saved changes?
Do not assume file handling or persistence works identically across every release. Infinite Mac says some systems support drag-and-drop file import and export and virtual CD-ROM mounting. It also describes a Saved HD intended to preserve disk contents across visits on a best-effort basis. Do you need to buy anything?
No physical Macintosh, manual, accessory, or repair tool is evidenced as necessary to start a browser-based session. The browser services are the central way to try the systems. Software availability is a separate matter: macemu says some titles are available for free redistribution while other pages explain where to obtain a reader’s own copy.
