To run Appium tests concurrently, give every worker its own running emulator or simulator and a capability set that reserves unique host-side ports and build data. Use UiAutomator2 for Android and XCUITest for iOS, explicitly identify each target, and isolate any optional ChromeDriver or video-streaming ports the worker uses.
What each parallel worker needs
Parallel execution is not just starting several test jobs. Your test runner must map each worker to a distinct device, while the Appium driver instances avoid competing for the same host resources. Prepare one configuration per worker before launching sessions.

Use the W3C appium: namespace for driver-specific capabilities where required by your client and server combination. Capabilities are inputs to a session; for current driver-specific names and behavior, use the README for the version of the driver you installed rather than relying on Appium’s legacy general capabilities page.
Prepare Appium and the device targets
Install the drivers and validate Android prerequisites
Install Appium and the driver or drivers for the platforms in your test matrix. UiAutomator2 requires Android SDK Platform Tools, a configured ANDROID_HOME or ANDROID_SDK_ROOT, Java, and an installed emulator platform image. Its documentation lists Windows, Linux, and macOS as supported hosts. To check many Android prerequisites, run appium driver doctor uiautomator2; the driver README says this command has been available since UiAutomator2 driver 2.39.0. Confirm requirements against your installed driver version, as they can change. See the UiAutomator2 driver README.

Start and identify every target
Start the Android emulators and iOS simulators your workers will use, and ensure each worker is assigned to a distinct running target. On Android, use adb devices -l to list connected device identifiers. Set appium:udid explicitly for parallel sessions: UiAutomator2 may otherwise choose the first connected device. On macOS, use xcrun simctl list to find simulator identifiers for XCUITest. The XCUITest guide also allows targeting with a unique device-name and platform-version pair.
Choose how Appium servers handle sessions
Appium supports two broad layouts: one server process per worker, or one server process handling multiple session requests. In a multi-process setup, give each server a different server port and keep the worker-to-device mapping clear. The driver guides characterize a single process serving multiple requests as using fewer resources and offering better control; the test runner still has to associate each worker with the intended session. Neither layout removes the need for distinct device identities and isolated driver resources.

There is no universal concurrency limit or published speedup established by the cited driver documentation. How many sessions a host can sustain depends on its available resources, device readiness, and the demands of your app and tests. Choose a layout your runner can manage reliably, then increase the number of concurrent sessions gradually.

Build a separate capability set for each worker
For every worker, record its target identifier, driver, ports used by enabled features, and any per-session build path. Allocate the ports before creating sessions, and do not assign a port already used by an active session. The following defaults are documented by the current driver guides; treat them as reference points, not values to duplicate across concurrent workers.

UiAutomator2’s automatic system-port range is not a guarantee that a particular port is free. Check your worker allocations and host for conflicts. The UiAutomator2 README and XCUITest parallel-testing guide describe the driver-specific settings and defaults.
Start with a small parallel run, then scale
- Assign targets. Start the emulators or simulators and map a distinct device identifier to each worker.
- Choose the server layout. Configure either separate Appium processes with distinct server ports or one process serving multiple session requests.
- Allocate session resources. Give each worker unique ports for every active driver feature, plus a separate XCUITest
derivedDataPath. - Create a small number of sessions. Confirm that each session attaches to its intended target and that the app launches and tests run.
- Increase concurrency incrementally. Watch Appium logs, device readiness, port-binding errors, and host resource saturation as you add workers.
This staged rollout is an operational way to check the documented isolation requirements; it does not imply that Appium guarantees a particular number of sessions or performance gain.

Troubleshoot common parallel-run failures
“Address already in use” or a session fails to start
Review all port assignments for active workers: systemPort, wdaLocalPort, chromedriverPort, and mjpegServerPort. Check for duplicate assignments and stale processes holding a port, then retry with a free port for each session.

Android tests run on the wrong emulator
Set appium:udid explicitly for each worker and confirm that its value matches the intended device in adb devices -l. Without an explicit identifier, UiAutomator2 may select the first connected device.

iOS sessions conflict during build or launch
Give each XCUITest driver instance its own appium:derivedDataPath as well as a unique appium:wdaLocalPort. Verify that each worker’s values are distinct.
Sessions work individually but fail together
Compare the complete capability sets for the workers, not only their device names. Check target identifiers, every port used by an enabled feature, and iOS build paths. On Android, Chrome and webview tests add a ChromeDriver port requirement; avoid enabling optional port-using features that the test does not need.
Check version-specific requirements
Driver capabilities, defaults, and platform requirements can change. The UiAutomator2 README, for example, says driver 6.0.0 raises the minimum Android API level to 26, whereas earlier driver versions supported API 21; do not treat either requirement as universal across versions. Confirm the installed driver’s README before pinning a device matrix or port configuration. The XCUITest parallel guide is the relevant reference for simulator session isolation and its documented port defaults.
