Mac.apk is an alpha project that its developers say runs Android apps directly as macOS processes on Apple Silicon Macs—without an emulator, virtual machine, or Linux layer. It requires macOS 26.4 or newer and an M1-or-later Mac, and app compatibility is not guaranteed. The key trade-off is security: apps run with your macOS user account’s permissions, so only install APKs you trust.
What Mac.apk does
Mac.apk describes itself as an Android application environment for macOS. According to its project README, Android apps run as ordinary macOS processes, can have separate windows, and appear in the Dock. The project says apps draw through the Mac GPU and execute on the CPU at native speed; those are project claims, not independently benchmarked results.
The README also describes app windows as resizable and rotatable, with light or dark appearance following the Mac. AppleInsider reported on Oct. 2, 2026, that installed Android apps go into the Mac’s Applications folder. This is not a promise that every Android app behaves like a native Mac app or that every app will run.

- macOS: version 26.4 (Tahoe) or newer.
- Processor: Apple Silicon M1 or newer. Intel Macs are unsupported.
- Storage: The project estimates Mac.apk itself at about 280 MB. Each installed app is estimated to use roughly 1.5 to 3 times the size of its APK file.
These requirements describe the project’s current documentation, not a guarantee that an app will work once installed.

- Download and open the Mac.apk disk image.
- Move Mac.apk into the Mac’s Applications folder, then open it.
- Install the runtime when prompted.
- If you want, set the supported Android package types as default file handlers.
- Open an Android app package in Mac.apk, or drag the package into the app. The README lists
.apk,.apkm,.xapk,.apks, and.apkx.
The project says a large app’s first launch can take up to a minute while it prepares; later launches are faster. Treat that timing as the README’s guidance, not a measured result.

Mac.apk labels itself alpha software under active development. Its README says some apps run well, some work only partially, and others do not run yet. AppleInsider’s Oct. 2, 2026 report specifically notes problems with games that use anti-cheat systems. The reporter described a quick trial as smooth, but that is one attributed account—not a reproducible compatibility test.

Do not assume a particular app, game, app store, Google account, or online service will work unless the project’s current compatibility information confirms it. The project links to a compatibility list, but app-by-app results are not established here.
Understand the security and data trade-offs
The README warns that Android apps running under Mac.apk have the permissions of your macOS user account and do not have a phone-style app sandbox. The project says it cannot test, audit, or vouch for third-party APKs. Because of that permission model, only load packages from sources and publishers you trust; installing an APK is a security decision, not just a compatibility experiment.

Saved app data is stored inside that app’s own .app bundle, according to the README. Dragging the app to Trash deletes its saved data. To remove an app while preserving the intended uninstall flow, use the Mac.apk control panel rather than deleting the bundle manually.
Personal use and licensing
The project README says Mac.apk is free for personal, non-commercial use. Commercial use, redistribution, white-labeling, bundling, or distribution requires a separate license agreement. The project also says it has no ads and no in-app purchases by design. Check the current README for terms before using or distributing it, since project documentation can change.
