Yes. You can keep using Android apps and run a Linux userspace on the same phone by installing Termux, an Android terminal and Linux environment. It works without rooting or replacing Android. The practical sweet spot is command-line software, development tools, shells, scripts and server utilities installed through APT. Termux does not turn the handset into an unrestricted desktop-Linux computer, and compatibility with arbitrary graphical Linux applications is not guaranteed.
What this setup actually does
Termux is an Android application that supplies a Linux userspace inside Android. Android remains the operating system: you continue to launch ordinary apps from the launcher, use Android permissions, and receive Android system updates. Termux adds a terminal in which you can install Linux packages and run them alongside those Android apps.
This is different from installing a complete desktop Linux distribution as the phone’s operating system. It is also different from emulating another phone. A Termux package is built for its environment and Android device architecture; a random binary downloaded for a desktop Linux distribution may depend on libraries, services, graphics drivers or privileges that are not available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat works best
- Shells, text-processing utilities and scripting languages packaged for Termux.
- Compilers, interpreters and development toolchains that have Termux packages.
- Command-line network, file, archive and automation utilities.
- Long-running command-line work, provided Android and the phone manufacturer allow the process to remain in the background.
What is not established by installing Termux
- Universal support for desktop Linux graphical applications.
- Automatic hardware acceleration or access to every phone sensor and peripheral.
- Permission to read another Android app’s private data.
- A replacement for Android or a superuser shell.
What you need before installing
- An Android phone that meets the current Termux support requirements. The project describes full support for Android 7 and later, while its installation page also lists separate package variants for Android 5 and 6. These requirements can change, so check the current project instructions for your Android release.
- Enough storage for the base application and the packages you plan to install.
- A reliable installation source and a willingness to use that same source for Termux plugins.
- Permission to install an APK if you are using a source outside the default app store. Follow Android’s current security prompts and verify that the APK comes from the project’s official distribution channel.
You do not need root for the standard Termux route. Rooting and bootloader unlocking are separate device-modification choices with different risks, including data loss and reduced device security.

Choose one Termux distribution source
Termux is distributed through more than one channel, but its project warns against mixing them. Builds from different channels use different signing keys, and Termux plus its plugins share an Android user ID. Installing the main app from one source and a plugin from another can cause signature or installation conflicts.
Recommended source strategy
- Open the current Termux project installation instructions.
- Choose one supported channel, such as the stable F-Droid build identified by the project, and obtain Termux and every Termux plugin from that same channel.
- Keep that source for updates. Do not sideload a newer-looking APK from a different channel over the existing installation.
- If you must change channels, uninstall the existing Termux application and all of its plugin APKs first, then install the replacements from the new channel. Back up any files you need before uninstalling.
The project page currently identifies version 0.118.3 and describes a Google Play build for Android 11 and later as experimental, with missing functionality and bugs compared with the stable F-Droid build. Treat those labels and version numbers as time-sensitive; verify the current repository status immediately before installing.
Install Termux and open your Linux environment
- Install Termux from the single distribution source you selected.
- Launch Termux from the Android app drawer. The first launch creates a private application directory and a minimal Linux environment.
- Allow only the Android permissions you understand. Termux does not need root to provide its basic shell and package manager.
- Wait for the initial setup to finish, then use the shell prompt. Android apps remain available through the normal launcher and recent-apps screen.
The first screen is a terminal, not a conventional desktop. Commands run as the Termux application user. Android’s application sandbox still separates that user from other apps’ private data.
Update the package catalog and install Linux tools
Termux uses APT for additional packages. Package names and availability depend on the current repository and your device architecture, so search the current Termux package catalog for the tool you need rather than copying a desktop-Linux tutorial unmodified.

- In Termux, run the package-manager metadata update command documented by the project, commonly written as
apt update. - Apply available package upgrades with the project’s documented upgrade command, commonly
apt upgrade. Read the proposed changes before confirming. - Install a required package with APT, using the package’s actual catalog name, for example
apt install package-name. - Start the installed program from the Termux prompt and read its help output for Android-specific paths or options.
The command examples show the standard APT form; the project’s current documentation is authoritative if command names, repositories or prompts change. Avoid downloading an unrelated desktop binary when a Termux package exists, because the packaged build supplies the libraries and paths expected by this environment.
Where files are stored
Termux has its own app-private filesystem. If you need to work with files in Android’s shared storage, use the Termux storage-access procedure documented by the project and grant the resulting Android permission deliberately. Granting shared-storage access does not grant access to the private data directories of other applications.
Use Android and Linux apps at the same time
There is no second operating-system boot involved. Leave Termux running, press the Android Home button or gesture, and open another Android app normally. Return to Termux through the recent-apps view or its launcher icon. This lets you copy text between apps where Android permits it, receive Android notifications, and use the Linux shell without closing the Android session.

For work that must continue
- Keep the phone charged and avoid aggressive battery-optimization settings for Termux if your Android version offers an exemption.
- Use the project’s supported Termux add-ons only from the same distribution source when you need a foreground service or other integration.
- Expect a killed process to require restarting unless the program has its own checkpoint or recovery mechanism.
- Test the exact workload on the target phone; background behavior is not uniform across Android releases and manufacturers.
Command-line Linux versus graphical Linux applications
Termux’s strongest, documented use case is command-line software packaged for its environment. A graphical Linux program adds several more dependencies: a display server or remote-display method, input handling, compatible libraries, graphics support and sometimes hardware-specific drivers. The supplied Termux and Android documentation does not establish a universal GUI method or compatibility for named desktop applications.
If you need a graphical program
Evaluate that program separately. Confirm that a Termux package or an Android-compatible build exists, identify the display method it expects, and check whether your Android release and phone support the required graphics and input path. Do not assume that installing a desktop distribution’s package will produce a usable window on Android. A GUI setup may work for one application and device while failing on another.
If your requirement is a full desktop environment rather than a few command-line tools, you are considering a different project. It may involve a container, a remote desktop session or a replacement operating system, each with its own compatibility, security and maintenance requirements. None is required to run Android apps alongside Termux packages.
Why root is not required
The Termux project explicitly describes its environment as working directly without rooting or setup. It runs as an ordinary Android app user and uses the interfaces Android exposes to applications. That is why it can coexist with Android apps without changing the bootloader or replacing the system image.

Root and bootloader unlocking belong to a more advanced route. Android’s Open Source Project explains that device owners may unlock a bootloader to install another operating system or obtain root for debugging and features unavailable through Android APIs. Those actions can erase data, weaken the security model and make future updates or support more complicated.
Do not root merely because a Linux command-line package needs to be installed. Consider root only when a specific, well-understood task requires privileges unavailable to ordinary apps, and only after reviewing device-specific recovery and backup procedures.
Understand Android’s security boundaries
Android is built on the Linux kernel, but Android applications are not unrestricted Linux users. Android assigns applications unique user IDs, runs them in separate processes and uses kernel-level sandboxing to limit what each app can access. Termux operates inside those rules.
Android’s compatibility requirements also state that alternate execution environments must preserve the platform’s security and permission model. They must not access other applications’ sandboxes or grant superuser privileges to applications using the runtime. In practical terms:

- Termux cannot legitimately read another app’s private database just because both are on the same phone.
- Installing a Linux package does not bypass Android permission prompts.
- A shell inside Termux is not automatically an administrator shell.
- Claims that a third-party environment makes the phone unrestricted Linux should be treated skeptically.
Compatibility and update caveats
| Item | What is established | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Android release | The project describes full support on Android 7 and later and lists separate variants for Android 5 and 6. | Check the current repository before installing, especially on an older phone. |
| Current project version | The repository page identifies version 0.118.3 at the time of the documented information. | Do not treat that number as permanent; use the current release shown by the project. |
| Google Play build | The project describes the Android 11-and-later Play build as experimental, with missing functionality and bugs compared with the stable F-Droid build. | Read the current status before choosing it. |
| Plugin compatibility | APK channels use different signing keys and share a user ID. | Install Termux and plugins from one channel only. |
| Background processes | Android 12 and later may kill excessive or numerous background processes. | Test long-running jobs and review battery restrictions on your device. |
These are release and device conditions, not guarantees that every package or workload behaves identically on every handset.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The APK will not install or an update reports a signature conflict
You may have mixed distribution channels. Do not force the installation. Back up files stored in Termux, uninstall the existing Termux and plugin APKs, and reinstall all of them from one source according to the current project instructions.
APT cannot find a package
First update the package metadata, then verify the exact package name in the current Termux catalog. A desktop-Linux guide may use a package name that does not exist in Termux, or the software may not be packaged for your architecture. Do not substitute an unverified binary and assume it will work.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A program works until you switch to another Android app
Android or the phone manufacturer may have stopped the background process. Check battery-optimization and background-execution settings, keep the job in the foreground while testing, and confirm whether the program supports recovery after interruption. Android 12-plus behavior is specifically subject to process-killing limits.
The program starts but has no usable window
You are likely attempting a graphical desktop application without a compatible display path. Termux’s documented baseline is command-line software. Verify the application’s Android, graphics and display requirements individually rather than assuming a missing window is an ordinary package error.
A command cannot access an Android file
Termux’s private filesystem is separate from shared storage. Follow the current Termux storage-access procedure and grant Android’s storage permission when prompted. That permission still does not expose other apps’ private sandboxes.
Which approach fits your goal?
| Your goal | Best starting point | Root needed? | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use shells, scripts or Linux command-line utilities while keeping Android | Termux and its APT packages | No | Package availability and Android background limits vary. |
| Run one particular graphical Linux application | Investigate that application’s Android-compatible or Termux-compatible route separately | Not established | Display, graphics and library compatibility are application-specific. |
| Replace Android with another operating system | A device-specific bootloader and alternative-OS project | Often involves bootloader changes or root-related work | Separate installation, security, backup and hardware-support risks. |
| Access another app’s private data or obtain unrestricted privileges | Not provided by standard Termux | Would require a separate, high-risk device-modification decision | Android’s sandbox and permission model still apply to ordinary apps. |
A safe operating checklist
- Confirm your Android version against the current Termux installation page.
- Choose one distribution channel and use it for Termux and all plugins.
- Back up important Termux files before changing channels or uninstalling.
- Update package metadata before installing software.
- Prefer packages built for Termux over random desktop-Linux binaries.
- Assume command-line compatibility before graphical compatibility.
- Test background jobs with the screen locked and the intended Android apps open.
- Keep expectations inside Android’s permission and sandbox boundaries.
Bottom line
Install Termux from one current, trusted distribution source, update its APT package catalog, and add the Linux command-line tools you need. Continue launching Android apps normally; both environments can coexist because Termux is an Android app rather than a replacement operating system. Root is unnecessary for this route. Treat graphical Linux applications, unrestricted privileges, background reliability and older Android support as separate compatibility questions that must be checked for your exact app, phone and Android release.
