Short answer: use a persistent Debian or Ubuntu machine, create a separate service account, install SteamCMD with its 32-bit libraries, and download the Assetto Corsa dedicated-server depot (App ID 302550) into a directory such as /home/ac/server. Copy the cars and tracks your event requires from a licensed Assetto Corsa PC installation, configure server_cfg.ini and entry_list.ini, open the configured ports in the Linux firewall, forward those same ports on your router, and launch ./acServer from the server directory.
The commonly documented defaults are TCP and UDP port 9600 plus TCP port 8081, but your own server_cfg.ini is authoritative. A stock acServer is the least disruptive choice for existing INI files and Content Manager presets; AssettoServer is a separate Linux implementation with additional administration and gameplay features.

A dedicated server is a continuously available host running the Assetto Corsa server process independently of your driving PC. It can be a spare computer at home or a rented Linux virtual machine. Choose a host that remains online, has enough storage for the server and copied content, and lets you control inbound TCP and UDP ports.
Core prerequisites
- A current Debian or Ubuntu installation with administrator access.
- A separate, non-root Linux account for the game server. The examples use
ac. - At least 4 GB of free disk space, the recommendation given by the community setup guide. This is a storage prerequisite, not a measured player-capacity or performance guarantee.
- SteamCMD and the 32-bit runtime libraries required by the depot.
- A Steam account that can authenticate SteamCMD. Keep its credentials out of scripts, shell history shared with other users, and public documentation.
- A licensed Assetto Corsa PC installation from which you can copy any cars and tracks not included in the dedicated-server files.
- Control of the host firewall and, for a home server, the internet-facing router.
Home host or VPS?
Both approaches work. A home machine avoids a recurring hosting bill but depends on your electricity, upstream bandwidth, router configuration, and the reliability of your home connection. A VPS normally offers a datacenter network and persistent power, while you must check its CPU and RAM allocation, storage limits, bandwidth policy, DDoS policy, geographic location, and whether arbitrary inbound ports are permitted. No universal monthly price, player limit, or latency figure is established here; those vary by provider, location, and workload.

Install SteamCMD and the dedicated-server depot
Use a root shell only for operating-system changes. Run the game server itself as the unprivileged ac account so a server-side mistake does not grant it unnecessary system access.
- Enable 32-bit packages. Debian and Ubuntu installations commonly need the i386 architecture for SteamCMD and the server dependencies.
- Refresh package metadata and install dependencies. The representative command is:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y lib32gcc-s1 lib32stdc++6 steamcmdPackage names can differ between distribution releases. If your package manager reports that a package is unavailable, use the equivalent 32-bit GCC and C++ runtime packages documented for that release, then confirm that SteamCMD starts.
- Create the service account.
sudo adduser --disabled-password --gecos "" acThis creates the home directory used by the examples. Set a controlled administrative method for maintenance rather than enabling a shared password on the game account.
- Download App ID 302550 into a fixed directory.
sudo -u ac steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/ac/server +login YOUR_STEAM_ACCOUNT +app_update 302550 validate +quitSome Linux guides add +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows before the login or depot commands because the dedicated-server depot is delivered as a Windows-targeted Steam application. Follow the behavior of the SteamCMD package currently installed on your distribution. Do not assume that a command copied from an older guide is still required; if you use the platform override, place it before authentication and the app update as shown in the guide you are following.
Replace YOUR_STEAM_ACCOUNT with the account used for the download. The command may prompt for authentication or a Steam Guard code. Avoid publishing the command with a real account name or any password. A first download can take time and may print warnings that are harmless; treat an explicit update or validation failure as an installation error.

- Verify the installation as the
acuser.
sudo -u ac test -x /home/ac/server/acServer

sudo -u ac ls -la /home/ac/serverYou should see an executable named acServer and a cfg directory. If either is missing, rerun the SteamCMD update and validation, check the install path, and confirm that the command ran with +force_install_dir /home/ac/server.
Install the cars and tracks your event requires
The dedicated-server depot does not include every community or licensed car and track combination. A server can start successfully yet fail to load an event because the selected content is absent or incompatible with the clients.
Copy content from a licensed PC installation
- Locate the licensed Assetto Corsa PC installation containing the cars and tracks you intend to host.
- Copy the required directories into the server’s content tree:
content/carsandcontent/tracks. - Preserve the directory names and file structure expected by the game.
- Make the copied files readable by the
acaccount, and keep the server and client content versions compatible.
Do not assume that a client having a similarly named mod is sufficient. Every connected player needs the same track and car identifiers, and version differences can produce a missing-content or mismatch error. Test one representative client connection before announcing a public race.
Configure server_cfg.ini
The main configuration file is /home/ac/server/cfg/server_cfg.ini. It defines the server identity, sessions, selected content, passwords, visibility, gameplay assists, and network ports. Open it with an editor as the ac user or with administrative privileges while preserving ownership.

The frequently used defaults are UDP and TCP 9600, with TCP 8081 for the HTTP endpoint. They are conventions, not immutable requirements. If you change any value in the INI, use the changed value everywhere else.

Define slots with entry_list.ini
/home/ac/server/cfg/entry_list.ini describes the individual car slots. It can specify the model, skin, driver name, GUID, ballast, restrictor, and optional AI rows. This file is where you turn a general server configuration into a controlled grid.
Human-driver slots
- Create one entry for each reserved slot.
- Use a car model installed under
content/cars. - Set a skin that exists for that model.
- Use driver names and GUIDs when you need to reserve places for known participants.
- Apply ballast or restrictor values only when your event rules require them.
AI rows
AssettoServer documentation shows AI=auto and AI=fixed patterns. If you use AI to fill spare places, set an explicit maximum player count so the server does not treat every available slot as a human connection. Test the resulting grid with the exact car and track combination before race day; AI support and configuration behavior can differ between the stock binary and AssettoServer.
Open the firewall and forward the router
Two separate controls must agree: the Linux host firewall and, for a server behind a home router, the router’s port-forwarding rules. Forwarding only one side leaves the service unreachable.
UFW example for the common defaults
sudo ufw allow 9600/tcp
sudo ufw allow 9600/udp
sudo ufw allow 8081/tcp
sudo ufw statusThese commands open the conventional values. If your INI uses different ports, replace the numbers with the configured TCP_PORT, UDP_PORT, and HTTP_PORT. Avoid opening unrelated ports.
Router forwarding
- Give the server a stable private address on your home network so the forwarding target does not change unexpectedly.
- Create a TCP and UDP rule for the configured game port, commonly
9600, pointing to that private address. - Create a TCP rule for the configured HTTP port, commonly
8081. - Save the router configuration and confirm that its target address still belongs to the Linux host.
For a VPS, perform the equivalent allow-listing in the provider’s network firewall and the operating-system firewall. A provider policy can still block a port even when UFW allows it.

Security checks before going public
- Keep
ADMIN_PASSWORDprivate and do not paste it into forum posts, screenshots, or launch scripts. - Review any administrator whitelist or authentication option before enabling public access.
- Expose only the ports required by your chosen configuration.
- Remember that the default server implementation does not use the Steam API to determine whether a connected player is actually the account they claim to be. This is an identity-verification limitation to consider when deciding how much trust to place in player-supplied identities; it is not proof that every configuration is unsafe.
Start the server and perform a first connection test
Start from the server root so relative paths resolve correctly:
cd /home/ac/server
./acServerFor the first launch, keep the process attached to your terminal. Configuration mistakes, missing content, and permission problems are easiest to see in the live console output. Confirm that the selected track and cars exist, the configured sessions are accepted, and the server reaches a state in which a client can join.
Test in this order
- Join from a client on the same local network, if possible. This separates content and configuration errors from internet routing problems.
- Confirm that the client has matching car and track versions.
- Test the password and administrator credentials privately.
- Test from an external connection after router forwarding and firewall rules are in place.
- Change one setting at a time if a test fails, then restart the server and repeat.
Keep it running persistently
For unattended operation, run acServer under a service supervisor such as systemd, or inside a terminal multiplexer. The cited setup material establishes the launch command but does not provide a tested service unit. If you create one, validate its working directory, user, permissions, stop behavior, restart behavior, and log handling on your own distribution before relying on it for a public event. Always stop the old process cleanly before replacing binaries or configuration files.
Stock acServer or AssettoServer?
These are different operating choices, not two names for the same binary. Begin with the stock server when compatibility is the priority. Consider AssettoServer when its documented Linux build and extended features solve a problem you actually have.

Do not replace a working stock installation immediately before an event. Make a copy of the configuration, install the alternative in a separate directory, and test its content, ports, permissions, and shutdown behavior first. Supported settings and versions can change, so consult the current AssettoServer documentation when selecting a release.

Self-hosting, updates, and operational routine
Use a controlled update process
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up
cfg/server_cfg.ini,cfg/entry_list.ini, and any custom configuration or scripts. - Record the current server and content versions.
- Run SteamCMD’s
+app_update 302550 validateas theacaccount, or update the separate AssettoServer binary according to its release instructions. - Check that
acServer,cfg, cars, and tracks still exist and have the expected ownership. - Start in an attached terminal, perform a local join test, then reopen public access.
Keep configuration and content compatible
When a driver reports a missing car or track, compare the exact folder identifier and version on the client and server. When a setting appears to have no effect, verify that you edited the active file under /home/ac/server/cfg, not a copy elsewhere, and that the process was restarted after the change. Keep a written inventory of the event’s CARS, TRACK, layout, and entry-list values so a rollback is straightforward.

Troubleshooting by symptom
SteamCMD cannot install or validation reports failure
- Confirm that i386 architecture was added and that
lib32gcc-s1andlib32stdc++6installed successfully. - Check that the command uses the intended install directory and App ID
302550. - Try the documented
+@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windowsbehavior if the current SteamCMD package requires it for this depot. - Run the update as the
acuser so the resulting files are writable by the account that will launch the server.
./acServer is missing
Inspect /home/ac/server, rerun the update with +force_install_dir, and validate again. A common cause is downloading into a different SteamCMD working directory than the one used by the launch command.
The server starts but a session will not load
- Check that the
CARSandTRACKidentifiers match directories undercontent/carsandcontent/tracks. - Copy missing content from a licensed PC installation.
- Compare client and server versions and remove or replace incompatible files.
- Review the optional track layout value and the corresponding installed layout.
Players on the internet cannot see or join it
- Read the active
UDP_PORT,TCP_PORT, andHTTP_PORTvalues fromserver_cfg.ini. - Confirm matching UFW rules.
- Confirm that router forwarding targets the server’s current private address.
- For a VPS, check both the provider firewall and the operating-system firewall.
- Test locally first; if local joining works but external joining fails, concentrate on forwarding and provider networking rather than content.
Reserved slots or AI behave unexpectedly
Review entry_list.ini for model, skin, GUID, ballast, restrictor, and AI fields. Ensure the configured maximum player count is explicit when AI fills spare slots, and verify that the selected AI pattern (AI=auto or AI=fixed) is supported by the implementation you are running.
Administration or identity is a concern
Change any exposed administrator secret, review whitelist and authentication settings, and avoid treating a displayed player name as proof of Steam-account ownership. The stock identity behavior described above means public communities should define their own moderation and access procedures.
A practical launch checklist
- Debian or Ubuntu host is patched and remains online.
- The
acservice account owns the server files. - SteamCMD, i386 support, and both 32-bit libraries are installed.
- App ID
302550is installed under/home/ac/server. acServerandcfgexist.- All required cars, tracks, and layouts are copied and version-compatible.
server_cfg.inihas the intended name, content, sessions, passwords, visibility, assists, and ports.entry_list.inihas the intended slots, skins, GUIDs, restrictions, and AI rows.- Host firewall and router or VPS firewall rules match the actual INI ports.
- The first launch was observed in an attached terminal and a client completed a test join.
- Persistent supervision, backups, and a controlled update-and-restart procedure have been tested.
For most operators, the reliable path is to begin with the stock acServer, prove that content, configuration, and networking work, and only then evaluate AssettoServer’s additional administration or gameplay features. There is no authoritative benchmark in the setup material for player capacity, latency, or CPU performance, so size the host conservatively and validate it with the exact event content you plan to run.
