Godlike.Host offers hosted Arma Reforger servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The reliable setup is a Linux VPS with a public IPv4 address, the stable Arma Reforger dedicated-server files installed through SteamCMD (AppID 1874900), UDP 2001 allowed through both firewalls, and a service manager that restarts the process after disconnects or crashes. Use AppID 1890870 only when you deliberately need the experimental branch. Run the server natively for the simplest network path, or use Docker when reproducible files and isolated dependencies matter.
What a VPS-hosted Arma Reforger server actually is
A dedicated server is headless: it launches no local player game instance and instead processes game information and network synchronisation. Your VPS supplies the always-on CPU, memory, disk, public network address and operating-system firewall needed for players to find and join it. A home computer can host the same software, but a VPS avoids dependence on a household connection, sleep settings and changing residential addresses.

It must listen locally on a UDP socket, and it must advertise a public address and port that the backend and players can reach. A process can appear healthy on the VPS while still being invisible in the browser if the provider firewall, operating-system firewall, Docker mapping or advertised address is wrong.
Choose the VPS before installing anything
Required characteristics
- Linux operating system supported by your chosen SteamCMD and server-management method.
- A public IPv4 address. Private-only VPS networking or carrier-grade NAT prevents normal public hosting.
- Provider-level controls for inbound and outbound UDP rules, plus an operating-system firewall you can configure.
- Persistent disk space for the dedicated-server files, downloaded workshop content, logs, profile data and saves. Mod-heavy scenarios consume more storage than a bare installation.
- A region close to the majority of players. Physical distance and routing affect latency even when the server process is configured correctly.
- Enough consistent CPU, RAM, disk I/O and bandwidth for your intended scenario, player count and mod set.
Authoritative hosting documentation does not publish a current player-count-to-VPS-size benchmark. Do not treat a generic “four cores and eight gigabytes” recipe as a guarantee. Start with a modest instance, observe frame time, memory pressure, disk activity and network use during a representative session, then resize or move regions if those measurements demand it.

Provider checks that prevent later surprises
- Confirm that UDP is permitted; some inexpensive plans restrict game-server traffic.
- Check whether snapshots are available so you can restore configuration and saves before an upgrade.
- Read bandwidth limits and overage terms, especially if workshop downloads are frequent.
- Verify the provider’s support policy for self-managed game servers and the availability of your required region.
Install the stable dedicated-server files with SteamCMD
Bohemia Interactive identifies AppID 1874900 as the stable dedicated-server application and 1890870 as experimental. Use the stable ID for a normal public server; switching to experimental should be an intentional compatibility decision because clients and mods may not match the stable branch.
- Connect to the VPS over SSH with an administrative account, then create a dedicated, non-root account for the game process. Keep the installation and runtime data under a directory that account can read and write.
- Install SteamCMD using the package method documented for your Linux distribution, or unpack the current SteamCMD build into a directory owned by the game account.
- Run SteamCMD and sign in anonymously when the dedicated-server application permits it. At the SteamCMD prompt, select an installation directory and issue
app_update 1874900 validate. Thevalidateoption checks downloaded files; omit it on routine updates when you want the shortest update operation. - Record the exact installation path and keep it separate from configuration, profile, save and workshop directories. Separate paths make backups and rollback easier.
- Run the server once in the foreground before automating it. This exposes missing libraries, permissions and malformed JSON immediately instead of hiding them behind a service manager.
SteamCMD updates replace application files, not the persistent data you deliberately store elsewhere. Keep a note of the branch and build you are running so you can correlate a change in behavior with an update.

Build the JSON configuration carefully
Arma Reforger uses a case-sensitive JSON configuration. Capitalization, punctuation and nesting must match the official server-config schema exactly; a key that differs only by case is a different key. Validate the file as JSON before starting the service, and make a backup before each hand edit.
Network fields
bindAddress: leave this empty in the normal single-interface case so the process listens on all interfaces. Set a specific address only when the VPS has multiple interfaces or you intentionally want to restrict listening.bindPort: defaults to UDP port 2001. Change it only when you have a clear reason and update every firewall, container mapping and advertised value consistently.publicAddress: the address players and the backend should use. Set it explicitly when automatic detection could choose a private address, an internal interface or a container address.publicPort: the port registered with the backend. In the standard setup it matches the public game port, UDP 2001.
On a straightforward VPS, an empty bindAddress, bindPort 2001 and a public IPv4 value for publicAddress are usually the least surprising combination. With Docker, explicitly setting the public address is especially important because automatic detection can register the container’s private IP.

Gameplay and validation settings
Use the official schema to select the scenario, server name, player limit and any optional RCON settings. Keep fastValidation set to true, as the official documentation recommends. Treat the configuration as source code: use versioned backups, review changes, and never paste comments into a JSON file unless the schema explicitly allows them.
The server’s frame rate can be limited at startup with -maxFPS. Limiting the maximum FPS can save performance on a VPS; choose a value deliberately and watch server behavior under load rather than assuming that a higher unrestricted rate is always better.
Open the correct UDP ports twice

Create matching inbound rules in the VPS provider’s firewall or security-group panel and in the Linux firewall. Opening a port in only one place is not enough. Keep unrelated ports closed, restrict SSH to trusted source addresses where practical, and do not expose RCON merely because the process supports it.
The official Boot Camp guidance states that Arma Reforger uses public port 2001 by default and that public and local ranges should match. If you deliberately change the game port, keep the local bind port, public registration, provider rule and operating-system rule aligned.

Native Linux deployment: the simplest network path
A native process has fewer translation layers than a container. That usually makes browser registration and packet troubleshooting easier, and it lets systemd supervise the executable directly.
- Place the server installation under the game account and create separate persistent directories for configuration, profile and save data, workshop content and logs.
- Finish and validate the JSON configuration, then start the executable manually with the configuration your installation uses and the chosen
-maxFPSvalue. - From a second terminal, watch the startup log for configuration errors, bind failures, workshop downloads and registration messages. Stop the foreground process cleanly after you have confirmed it reaches a ready state.
- Create a systemd unit that runs the same known-good command as the game account, starts after networking is available, restarts on failure and writes logs to the journal or a persistent log directory.
- Enable the unit at boot, start it, and inspect its status and recent journal output. Test a stop/start cycle so you know the unit releases and reacquires UDP 2001 correctly.
Do not run routine game services as root. Grant the game account ownership of only the installation and data directories it needs, and keep administrative access through SSH separate from the server process.

Docker is useful when you want an isolated runtime, repeatable files and a deployment that can be recreated on another VPS. The trade-off is an additional network and storage layer that must be configured correctly.
Publish UDP and persist the right directories
Publish UDP 2001 from the container to the VPS. Publish UDP 17777 and 19999 only when A2S queries or RCON are enabled. Mount host directories for the JSON configuration, profile and save data, workshop downloads and logs. If these paths live only in the container’s writable layer, removing or recreating the container can remove the state your server needs.

Use the image’s documented environment variables for the public address and game name, and map the image’s profile/configuration layout to stable host paths. Keep the host-side paths backed up and ensure the container user can write to them.
Avoid advertising the container address
The official hosting guidance warns that a Linux server can register the Docker container’s IP by default. A browser listing may then appear broken, or clients may receive an unreachable private address. Set the public address to the VPS’s reachable IPv4 address and publish the UDP ports on that address. If the VPS has multiple interfaces, verify that the chosen address is the one players can actually route to.
When Docker is the better choice
- You rebuild hosts frequently and want the same image, mounts and environment to reproduce the service.
- You operate several services and need clearer dependency isolation.
- You are comfortable inspecting container logs, port publishing and filesystem permissions.
Choose native Linux when a single server, minimal latency path and straightforward troubleshooting matter more than packaging repeatability.

systemd
systemd starts the server after boot, supervises the process and can restart it after an unexpected exit. Use the exact command that succeeded in the foreground, run it as the unprivileged game account, declare the working directory, and set a restart policy. After creating the unit, reload systemd’s unit files, enable the service, start it, and inspect status plus journal output. A deliberate stop and start verifies that the service does not depend on your SSH session.

LinuxGSM or comparable management
The official hosting documentation describes LinuxGSM as able to monitor, restart, update and alert on a server. This is useful when you want scheduled update checks, process and query health checks, notifications and standardized backup hooks rather than maintaining every timer yourself. It does not remove the need to set correct ports and persistent paths; it automates operations around a correctly configured server.
Backups and update discipline
- Back up the JSON configuration, profile and save data, workshop metadata and any custom scripts.
- Take a VPS snapshot before a major game or mod update when your provider supports snapshots.
- Schedule updates during a maintenance window, announce restarts to players, and verify the server browser and logs afterward.
- Retain at least one known-good configuration and application build so you can roll back a bad edit or incompatible mod.
Verify from outside the VPS
- Confirm the service is running and that the process has bound UDP 2001 on the expected interface.
- Check provider and operating-system firewall rules for UDP 2001, then add 17777 or 19999 only if their features are enabled.
- Use the in-game server browser from a network that is not the VPS itself. A local loopback test cannot prove that public routing works.
- Confirm the listed server name, scenario and player limit, then attempt a real join with a client on the intended game version.
- If the listing is absent or joining fails, inspect logs and correct one layer at a time: advertised address, public-to-local port mapping, Docker publishing, provider firewall, then host firewall.
Testing externally matters because a server can bind successfully while its advertised address is private, its provider security group is closed, or its container port is unpublished.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The process starts but the server is not visible
- Check that UDP 2001 is open in both firewall layers.
- Verify that
publicAddressis the VPS public IPv4, not a private or container address. - Confirm that
publicPortandbindPortagree with the published port and firewall rule. - Check that the server is using the stable or intentionally selected experimental branch and that the client version matches.
The browser lists it, but players cannot join
- Inspect Docker’s UDP publishing and ensure the provider forwards the same public port to the container’s game port.
- Compare the public and local ranges; the Boot Camp guidance expects them to match for the default setup.
- Look for a multi-interface bind or an automatically selected address that is reachable from the VPS but not from the internet.
The service dies after an SSH logout
The process was probably launched in the interactive shell instead of under systemd, LinuxGSM or another supervisor. Move the known-good launch command into the supervisor, run it as the game account, enable startup at boot and test by disconnecting deliberately.
Updates or mods break startup
Stop the service, preserve logs and configuration, and restore the last known-good backup or snapshot. Reapply updates during a maintenance window, then test with the intended mod set before reopening the server. Keep workshop data persistent so a container recreation does not silently remove required content.

Security and maintenance checklist
- Use a non-root game account and limit its filesystem permissions.
- Allow only required inbound ports: UDP 2001, plus 17777 and 19999 when their features are active.
- Protect RCON with the strongest controls provided by the server configuration and firewall; do not expose an unused RCON port.
- Keep the Linux operating system, SteamCMD, server files and container image updated on a planned schedule.
- Back up configuration and persistent game data before updates or mod changes.
- Monitor process health, query availability, disk space, memory and log growth; configure alerts through LinuxGSM or an equivalent system.
- Document the public address, ports, branch, installation path, data mounts and recovery procedure so another administrator can restore service.
Launch checklist
- Provision a Linux VPS with public IPv4, suitable region, persistent disk and UDP-capable firewall controls.
- Install SteamCMD and download stable AppID 1874900; use 1890870 only for an intentional experimental deployment.
- Create and validate the case-sensitive JSON configuration, leaving
bindAddressempty unless a specific interface is required. - Set the public address and port to the values players can route to, and keep
fastValidationtrue. - Allow UDP 2001 in both firewall layers; add UDP 17777 for A2S or UDP 19999 for RCON only when enabled.
- Choose native Linux or Docker, keeping configuration, profile, saves, workshop content and logs on persistent storage.
- Run once in the foreground, then place the working command under systemd, LinuxGSM or an equivalent supervisor with
-maxFPSset deliberately. - Test from an external network, read the logs, and correct address, mapping or firewall errors before inviting players.
