Eigent is the open-source desktop app behind the fully local agentic AI setup described by an XDA Developers author. In that configuration, Eigent coordinates specialist agents while LM Studio serves a local model—Qwen 3.5 9B—on the author’s GPU. The important qualification is that “local” describes a particular deployment: Eigent also supports cloud-connected options, so keeping inference on your hardware means choosing its standalone local path and avoiding external APIs or services.

What makes this an agentic setup rather than local chat?

A local chat app sends a prompt to a model and returns a response. The workflow described by the XDA author adds an orchestration layer: Eigent’s Coordinator can split a request into subtasks and assign them to specialist agents, such as Document and Browser agents, which can work concurrently. The author says each branch has its own memory window.

Eigent’s project documentation describes the app as an open-source desktop cowork application built on CAMEL-AI, with local deployment, model choice, browser and terminal toolkits, multi-agent workflows, and scheduled recurring tasks. Those capabilities make it possible to assemble a workflow around a local model, but they do not mean every tool or connected service is automatically local.

How the local model connection works

In the XDA account, Eigent connects to LM Studio’s OpenAI-compatible local server, with model inference running on the author’s GPU. LM Studio’s documentation explains that existing OpenAI-compatible clients can use its server by changing their base URL to point to LM Studio. In practical terms, the app and model server communicate through that local endpoint rather than sending prompts to a hosted model API.

The author reports using Qwen 3.5 9B and a GPU with 8 GB of VRAM, and describes the full workflow as somewhat slow. Those are details of one person’s setup, not a minimum specification, benchmark, or prediction of how another model and workload will perform.

Choose the deployment that matches your privacy goal

Eigent documents both a standalone local deployment and cloud-connected ways to use the app. Its project documentation describes the standalone option as “fully standalone with complete control over your data, no cloud account required.” That is the project’s description of its recommended local deployment, not an independent security audit or a guarantee about every configuration.

Setup choice Where inference runs What you configure Practical trade-off
Standalone local deployment On your hardware when paired with a local model server Eigent’s local deployment and a local model-serving endpoint, such as LM Studio You take responsibility for local setup, model choice, hardware, and tool access
Cloud-connected use Can involve hosted services or external model APIs Connected services or cloud configuration May require less local model-serving setup, but is not the same all-local workflow

If your aim is to keep prompts and model inference on your machine, use the standalone path and a local inference endpoint, and do not configure external model APIs or hosted services. Network-connected features—including web search and external accounts—can still communicate outside the device. Local inference helps keep the described model workflow on your hardware; it does not by itself establish that all data handling is private or secure.

What the workflow can automate and record

The XDA author describes using Schedule, Webhook, and Agentic triggers, as well as a local PostgreSQL instance to log agent messages, tool calls, and file writes. One example is a recurring search for DVDs. That is the author’s personal workflow, not evidence that every task will succeed or run at a particular speed.

A local activity log can make it easier to inspect what agents did, but it should not be treated as a security control on its own. The account describes a particular configuration; it does not establish that the logging behavior or the application has been independently audited.

Keep sensitive folders out of an agent’s reach

An agent that can read files, use a browser, or run terminal tools has meaningful access to your environment. Before giving it a task, decide which folders and tools are actually needed. Keep private or high-impact locations out of scope, and avoid broad access when a task can be completed with a selected working folder.

  • Grant file access only to the project or documents the task requires.
  • Review the browser and terminal tools enabled for the workflow, especially if they can access accounts or execute commands.
  • Check activity logs for file writes and tool calls after an agent completes a task.
  • Do not assume a local model prevents network traffic from web search, connected accounts, or other enabled integrations.

Is this approach right for your workload?

This setup is most relevant if you want several agents to coordinate around files or other tools while keeping model inference on your own machine, and you are willing to configure the app, local model server, permissions, and any automation yourself. A local model plus a file-access tool may involve fewer moving parts, while Eigent’s Coordinator and specialized agents add orchestration, parallel branches, scheduling, and the possibility of local activity records.

Hardware and workload matter. The XDA author’s 8 GB VRAM setup ran Qwen 3.5 9B but felt slow in the full workflow; that experience does not establish a universal threshold. More capable models or larger tasks may place different demands on a system, so choose hardware based on the particular model and workload rather than treating that reported configuration as a recommendation.
