Yes, you can host The Forest on Linux, but not with a native Linux server binary. The dedicated server is a Windows build. On a Linux machine, the documented self-hosting method downloads the Windows files with SteamCMD and runs them through Wine, with Winbind and Xvfb providing the compatibility and headless display support. Screen or a service manager keeps the process alive after you disconnect from SSH.

You need an always-on Linux host, persistent storage, the correct server configuration and save paths, and inbound access to ports 8766, 27015 and 27016. The default maximum is eight players. A Docker deployment is another Linux option when you prefer containerized persistence and repeatable updates.

What runs on Linux

The Forest dedicated server is compiled for Windows. Linux hosts it indirectly: SteamCMD installs the Windows server files, Wine launches the executable, Winbind supplies Windows account support expected by Wine, and Xvfb creates a virtual display so the process can run without a desktop session. This is different from running a native Linux daemon, so Wine-related messages in the log are expected.

A successful deployment has four separate pieces:

  • Server files: the Windows dedicated-server installation downloaded by SteamCMD.
  • Runtime: Wine, Winbind and Xvfb on the Linux host.
  • State: a Server.cfg file and a save directory stored on persistent disk.
  • Network: reachable host, firewall rules and, when applicable, router port forwarding.

The available documentation does not establish authoritative minimum CPU, memory, storage or distribution-version requirements. Choose a host with enough capacity for your expected player count and monitor it after launch rather than relying on an uncited hardware minimum.

Choose a Linux hosting method

Method Setup effort Control Updates Persistence and backups Firewall responsibility Troubleshooting Recurring cost, uptime and latency
Wine and SteamCMD on your own host Highest: install the runtime, download files, create paths and supervise the process. Full access to files, Wine settings, logs and operating-system services. Run SteamCMD updates yourself and verify that configuration and saves remain in place. You design the directory layout and backup schedule; use persistent disk and copy both configuration and saves. You manage the host firewall, cloud security group and router forwarding. You diagnose Wine, Xvfb, permissions, ports and the game process. Provider price and hardware are not established here. Uptime depends on your host and administration; latency depends mainly on host location and players.
Docker image on Linux Medium if you already know Docker; the image supplies much of the runtime packaging. Container-level control, with less direct control over the image internals. Pull the image’s current release and follow its update procedure; keep configuration and saves outside the disposable container layer. Map persistent configuration and save directories into the container. The Docker documentation warns that missing persistent setup can prevent saves and map configuration. You still open host and, if needed, router ports 8766, 27015 and 27016. You troubleshoot container logs, volume ownership, image changes and networking. Image pricing is not stated. Uptime and latency still come from the underlying Linux host and its network.
Managed game-server hosting Lowest: the provider normally supplies the host, startup and monitoring interface. Less operating-system access; options depend on the provider and game support. Usually provider-assisted, but verify how updates are scheduled and whether your files are preserved. Check exactly what is backed up, how often, where backups are stored and how restoration works. The provider normally handles the external firewall, while you configure in-panel access settings. You trade Linux-level control for provider support and a narrower set of logs and controls. Recurring prices, supported regions, The Forest availability and service-level commitments vary and are not established here. Confirm them before purchase.

Wine is the best fit when you want maximum control and are comfortable administering Linux. Docker is useful when you want a reproducible container and clear volume mappings. Managed hosting is simpler when uptime and support matter more than operating-system access.

Prepare an always-on Linux host

Use persistent infrastructure

Run the server on a machine or VPS that remains powered on and accepts inbound traffic. A home computer can work, but it must stay awake and have a stable local address for router forwarding. A VPS avoids home power and NAT issues, but you must configure its provider firewall or security group as well as the Linux firewall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reserve a persistent directory layout before installing anything. For example:

/srv/forest/server
/srv/forest/config
/srv/forest/saves
/srv/forest/backups

Keep the executable under /srv/forest/server, the configuration under /srv/forest/config, and saves under /srv/forest/saves. Do not place saves only in a temporary directory, a container’s writable layer or a session-specific home directory that may be removed during maintenance.

Confirm administrative access

You need SSH access, permission to install packages, enough persistent disk for the server files and saves, and authority to open inbound ports. If the machine is behind NAT, you also need access to the router. The exact CPU, RAM and disk requirements are not authoritatively published in the available documentation, so observe load and disk growth once the server is active.

Install Wine, Winbind, Xvfb and SteamCMD

Package names differ between distributions. The following illustrates the Debian/Ubuntu-style process; adapt package names to your distribution’s current repositories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enable 32-bit package support, because the SteamCMD and Windows-server stack may require 32-bit components:

    sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
    sudo apt update
  2. Install the required tools:

sudo apt install steamcmd wine winbind xvfb screen

On systems that publish a separate 32-bit SteamCMD package, install that package as well, for example:

    sudo apt install steamcmd:i386

If your distribution names the package differently, use its documented 32-bit SteamCMD equivalent. Screen is optional; omit it if you will supervise the process with a service manager.

  3. Create the directories and assign ownership to the account that will run the server:

    sudo mkdir -p /srv/forest/server /srv/forest/config /srv/forest/saves /srv/forest/backups
    sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /srv/forest
  4. Check that the commands resolve before downloading:

    wine --version
    winbindd --version
    xvfb-run --help
    steamcmd +quit

Do not assume that a package install alone proves the runtime is ready. A later startup test must confirm that Wine can launch the actual server executable and that the process can write to both configuration and save paths.

Download The Forest server with SteamCMD

The dedicated-server App ID is 556450. Force SteamCMD to use the Windows platform and install into the persistent server directory:

steamcmd +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows +login anonymous +force_install_dir /srv/forest/server +app_update 556450 validate +quit

The command downloads or updates the Windows server files. SteamCMD may display warnings while it initializes; wait for the command to finish and confirm that the executable exists below /srv/forest/server. If the files are elsewhere, locate the actual executable and use that directory consistently in later commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run updates with the same App ID and install directory. Stop the running server before an update, copy the configuration and saves into /srv/forest/backups, then run SteamCMD again. This avoids updating files while the executable is still writing state.

Create and review Server.cfg

The server configuration controls identity, access, player count, anti-cheat behavior, ports and autosaving. Create the file at /srv/forest/config/Server.cfg and set the values appropriate for your group. The exact syntax accepted by the current server build should take precedence over an old example.

Setting Purpose Important qualification
serverName Name shown to players when they find the server. Use a distinctive name that does not expose private information.
serverPlayers Maximum simultaneous players. The Forest Wiki lists a default maximum of eight players.
serverPassword Optional player password. Use a long, separate password if the server should be private.
serverPasswordAdmin Administrative password. Never reuse the player password or an operating-system password.
enableVAC Controls Valve Anti-Cheat behavior. Choose deliberately because it affects who can join and how the server is protected.
serverSteamPort Steam service port. Set to 8766 unless your current server documentation specifies another value.
serverGamePort Gameplay traffic port. Set to 27015 for the documented default layout.
serverQueryPort Server-list and query traffic port. Set to 27016 for the documented default layout.
Autosave settings Controls how often world state is written. Use the autosave fields and spelling documented for the current wiki/server build; the available documentation confirms autosave configuration but does not establish one universal key name.

A minimal file using the documented field names can look like this:

serverName Linux Forest Server
serverPlayers 8
serverPassword change-this-player-password
serverPasswordAdmin change-this-admin-password
enableVAC true
serverSteamPort 8766
serverGamePort 27015
serverQueryPort 27016

Replace the example passwords before allowing public access. Keep the file readable by the server account but not world-readable if it contains credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start the server headlessly through Wine

The Linux guide requires both the configuration-file and save-folder parameters at startup. Without them, the server will not start correctly. From the installation directory, launch the Windows executable through Xvfb and Wine:

cd /srv/forest/server
xvfb-run -a wine TheForestDedicatedServer.exe -batchmode -configfilepath /srv/forest/config/Server.cfg -savefolderpath /srv/forest/saves

The executable name or subdirectory can change with a server update. If that exact path is not present, use the executable installed by SteamCMD and retain the two explicit path arguments. Keep the terminal open for the first launch so you can read initialization output.

  • FOR FANTASY & STRATEGY FANS: Designed for families, teens, and adults who enjoy adventure games, storytelling, exploration, resource management, and immersive fantasy board game experiences.

Successful startup should eventually show host checks and activity associated with autosaving. This setup can print a substantial amount of output that looks like errors even when the server is functioning. Treat a message as actionable when the process exits, repeatedly fails the same initialization step, cannot access a path, or players cannot connect; do not stop solely because the log is noisy.

Keep the process running after SSH disconnects

Use Screen for a quick persistent session

  1. Create a named session:

    screen -S forest
  2. Run the Xvfb/Wine command inside that session.

  3. Detach without stopping it by pressing Ctrl-A, then D.

  4. Reconnect later with:

    screen -r forest

Screen is convenient for manual administration and live logs. It does not replace backups, restart policy or host monitoring.

Use a service manager for unattended operation

For a VPS or a machine that should recover after reboot, create a system service under a dedicated account. A unit can call the same xvfb-run and Wine command, set /srv/forest/server as its working directory, restart on failure and write output to the system journal. The exact unit syntax depends on your distribution and account name, so test it interactively first. After enabling it, verify startup with your service manager’s status and log commands, then perform one controlled reboot to confirm that the server returns without manual SSH work.

Do not run both Screen and a service manager for the same executable. Two supervisors can start duplicate instances that compete for the same ports and save files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open and forward the required ports

The documented port set is:

  • 8766: Steam port (serverSteamPort).
  • 27015: game port (serverGamePort).
  • 27016: query port (serverQueryPort).

Create firewall rules for all three on the Linux host. The exact transport protocol should follow the current server documentation and your provider’s requirements; do not assume that opening only one protocol is sufficient. If you use a cloud VPS, create equivalent inbound rules in its security-group or network-firewall interface.

For a home server behind a router, forward each required port from the public interface to the host’s fixed private IP address. A changing DHCP address silently breaks forwarding, so reserve the host’s address in the router. Test from outside your home network; a connection from the same LAN can succeed even when Internet forwarding is wrong.

Do not expose administrative services such as SSH to the entire Internet unnecessarily. Restrict SSH by source address or keys, keep the operating system patched, and use unique server passwords.

Verify the server from a remote client

  1. Confirm that exactly one server process is running and that it has opened ports 8766, 27015 and 27016.

Run The Forest in Docker instead

A Docker implementation provides another Linux route. The container example maps ports 8766, 27015 and 27016, exposes environment variables for server identity and port values, and uses host-mounted volumes for configuration and saves.

  1. Install Docker using your distribution’s current instructions and make sure your account can run the Docker command.

  2. Read the image’s current documentation for its image name, tag, environment-variable names and startup command. Those details can change, so do not copy an old image reference blindly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Map host directories for configuration and saves into the container. Keep those directories on persistent storage and back them up independently of the container.

  4. Publish all three required ports: 8766, 27015 and 27016.

  5. Set the environment variables for server name, player limit, passwords, VAC and ports, then start the container in detached mode.

Containers simplify repeatable deployment but do not remove networking or backup responsibilities. A missing volume mapping can make the server appear healthy while losing configuration or saves when the container is recreated.

Backups, updates and routine administration

Back up the state that matters

Back up Server.cfg and the complete save directory, not just the executable. Store at least one copy outside the server host. Before changing Wine, the container image or server files, stop the process, copy the state, record the date and retain a known-good backup.

Update safely

  1. Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.

  2. Copy configuration and saves into a dated backup directory.

  3. Update App ID 556450 with SteamCMD, or follow the Docker image’s documented update procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Start with the same configuration and save paths.

  5. Check logs, join with a test client and verify the existing world before reopening the server to everyone.

The community-maintained Linux guide, the wiki and Docker implementation can change. Recheck the server binary location, App ID, ports, Wine/Xvfb behavior and configuration paths whenever you upgrade or rebuild the host.

Troubleshoot common failures

The process exits immediately

  • Confirm that Server.cfg exists at the path supplied to -configfilepath.
  • Confirm that the directory supplied to -savefolderpath exists and is writable by the server account.
  • Check that you are launching the Windows executable through Wine, not trying to execute it directly as a Linux binary.
  • Run the command interactively outside Screen or the service manager so the first error is visible.
  • Verify that Wine, Winbind, Xvfb and required 32-bit components are installed.

Players cannot find or join it

  • Verify all three ports in Server.cfg match the firewall and router rules.
  • Check the cloud security group as well as the Linux firewall.
  • Confirm that router forwarding points to the host’s current private IP.
  • Test from outside the local network and use the public address, not the private address.
  • Make sure only one server instance is using the configured ports.

The server appears to run but loses the world

  • Inspect the actual save directory after an autosave; an empty directory usually indicates a wrong path or permissions.
  • For Docker, verify that the save volume is mounted to the location expected by the image.
  • Confirm that the service account can create and modify files.
  • Stop and restart under supervision, then check that the same save path is passed every time.

Logs contain alarming errors

Wine/Xvfb deployments can emit extensive error-looking output during normal operation. Look for repeated fatal initialization failures, process termination, inability to open the configuration or save path, failed host checks that never recover, and absent autosave activity. Compare behavior from a remote client rather than judging health from one isolated warning.

SSH disconnects stop the server

Start it inside Screen and detach, or move the command into a service manager configured to start at boot and restart on failure. Running the command directly in an SSH shell leaves it tied to that session.
