To move a Satisfactory dedicated server to Experimental, stop it cleanly, back up its save and configuration files, then update the server with SteamCMD using the -beta experimental flag. Put every connecting game client on the same Experimental branch and version. If the client and server are on different branches, the connection can fail with a version mismatch.
The procedure below covers a manually managed SteamCMD installation and the equivalent change for a systemd-managed Linux service. The app ID shown in the command is 1690800; it appears in commonly circulated instructions but has not been independently confirmed here, so verify the ID against the current Satisfactory dedicated-server documentation before using the command on a production machine.
What Experimental mode means for a dedicated server
Experimental is a testing branch rather than the normal Early Access branch. Switching the server changes which branch SteamCMD downloads and updates. Your server is therefore exposed to a different build cadence and to changes that may not yet be in the standard branch.
The important operational rule is branch parity: the dedicated server and every client that joins it must use the same branch and a compatible version. A server updated to Experimental cannot be treated as an ordinary Early Access server while clients remain on the standard branch.

- Server: SteamCMD downloads the Experimental branch by adding
-beta experimentalto the app update command. - Clients: Each player selects the Experimental beta in the Steam client for the game.
- Data: Saves and configuration files should be copied before the first branch change so you have a rollback point.
- Lifecycle: Returning to Early Access requires another update after removing the beta flag.
Prepare the server before changing branches
1. Schedule a clean stop
Announce downtime to players and stop the dedicated-server process through the method you normally use. Do not kill the process while it is writing a save. A clean stop leaves the installation in a state that SteamCMD can update and gives the game a chance to finish its normal shutdown work.
If a service manager starts the server automatically, stop that service first. Otherwise it may relaunch the old process while SteamCMD is replacing files, producing a confusing mixture of running and updated components.
2. Back up saves and configuration
Copy the server’s save files and configuration files to storage outside the live installation directory. The exact locations depend on how you installed and launched the dedicated server, so use the paths in your existing service or startup configuration rather than assuming a universal folder.
Keep at least one untouched copy from the Early Access state. Name the backup with the date and branch, for example “Early Access before Experimental,” so it is obvious which files belong together. Do not overwrite that copy with files produced after the branch switch.
3. Record the current setup
Before updating, note the installation directory, the SteamCMD command currently used, the service name if systemd manages it, and the branch selected by the game clients. This record makes it easier to identify whether a later problem is caused by the update, a service command, or a client still using Early Access.

Switch a Linux installation with SteamCMD
With the server stopped and backups complete, run SteamCMD from the account and directory that own the installation. The commonly documented Linux form is:

Should you include validate?
Leave it in when you want SteamCMD to compare local files and repair files that do not match the selected branch. Omit it when you are deliberately performing a faster update and have no reason to check every file. Validation does not replace a backup: it repairs the installation, not your save data or custom configuration.
Windows adaptation
On Windows, run the equivalent command with steamcmd.exe and a Windows installation path. For example:
steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir C:satisfactory +login anonymous +app_update 1690800 -beta experimental validate +quitReplace C:satisfactory with the directory used by your server. Keep the branch flag at the end of the app_update arguments, and verify the app ID before updating a live installation.

Keep the game client on Experimental
Updating only the server is not enough. Each player who connects must select the matching beta in Steam:
- Open the Steam Library.
- Right-click the Satisfactory game entry and choose Properties.
- Open the Betas tab.
- Select the Experimental beta for the game.
- Allow Steam to finish downloading the client update before connecting.
The dedicated server and the client should be updated from the same branch before anyone joins. Experimental is a testing build, so a new server update can require players to update their clients as well. If one side is updated and the other is not, the game can report a version mismatch.
Configure a systemd-managed server
If Linux starts your server through systemd, the Satisfactory Wiki notes that the ExecStartPre directive can be adjusted so SteamCMD fetches the Experimental branch whenever the service restarts.
Open the unit or drop-in that contains the existing SteamCMD pre-start command. Preserve its current installation directory, login method, app update operation, and any local options, then add -beta experimental to the app-update arguments. The goal is for the pre-start update to select Experimental before the server process launches.

If the service starts the game without running the pre-start update, inspect the unit actually enabled on the machine; editing a different copy will not change the active service.

Verify the branch change before inviting players
Confirm the update targeted the intended directory
Check that SteamCMD used the same installation directory recorded during preparation. An apparently successful update in a different directory leaves the real server on its previous branch.
Start the server normally
Launch it through the same command or service you use in production. Do not change unrelated startup options during the branch migration; keeping the launch method constant makes failures easier to isolate.
Connect with one matching client first
Have one player on the Experimental client attempt a connection before opening the server to the rest of the group. If that client connects, ask additional players to switch branches and complete their own updates rather than mixing branches.

Protect the backup
Keep the pre-switch save and configuration backup until you have confirmed that the Experimental server loads the intended world and that your players can connect. Experimental changes can make a return to the previous branch necessary, and the backup is your safest recovery point.

The client reports a version mismatch
Check the branch selected in Steam for both sides. The server must have been updated with -beta experimental, and the connecting client must have the Experimental beta selected in the Betas tab. If one side was updated more recently, complete the pending update before trying again.

The server still behaves like Early Access
Stop the server and inspect the exact SteamCMD command or systemd ExecStartPre entry that ran. The Experimental flag may be missing, attached to a different command, or applied to an installation directory that is not the one the service launches. Run the update against the active directory, then start the server again.
SteamCMD reports missing or mismatched files
Run the update with the optional validate argument. It is intended to compare local files with the selected branch and replace files that do not match. Keep your save and configuration backup separate because file validation is an installation repair step, not a save recovery tool.
The service immediately returns to the old branch
A systemd pre-start command can overwrite a manual change on every restart. Make the branch selection persistent in the active ExecStartPre directive, then restart through systemd so the same command is used consistently.
You need to undo the change
Do not delete the installation or restore random files from the backup while the server is running. Follow the controlled rollback procedure below: stop the server, preserve the Experimental state, remove the beta flag, update again, and then test with an Early Access client.
Return the server to Early Access
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly.
- Back up the current Experimental saves and configuration files separately from the original backup.
- Run the same SteamCMD update command, but remove
-beta experimental. The update should target the standard branch. - If systemd performs the update, remove the Experimental flag from its
ExecStartPrecommand before restarting the service. - Switch the game client back from the Experimental beta through Library → Properties → Betas.
- Start the server and test with one client on the restored branch.
The Satisfactory Wiki’s FAQ notes that Steam can remember the previously selected branch, so a server that appears not to have converted back may still be receiving an Experimental selection from the update command or client settings. Check both places rather than assuming the rollback failed.
Operational checklist
- Server process stopped cleanly.
- Save files copied to a separate backup location.
- Configuration files copied and labeled with the original branch.
- SteamCMD installation directory verified.
- Dedicated-server app ID verified before the update.

What to document for future updates
Record the working SteamCMD command, the installation directory, the service unit name, and the branch currently in use. Also record where the save and configuration backups are stored. Experimental servers may require more frequent coordination because the server and clients must move together; a short runbook prevents a routine update from becoming a branch-identification problem.
