Yes—you can run a private AI companion on your own computer without paying a recurring cloud-model subscription. The reliable setup has three parts: a local language-model runtime, a downloaded model that fits your hardware, and a chat interface such as SillyTavern for character conversations or Open WebUI for general assistant use. You must download software and model files while online, but inference can then run on the machine. “No cloud subscription required” does not mean free: you still provide the computer, storage, electricity and maintenance, and larger models may require a GPU upgrade.
What a private local AI companion actually is
A local companion is not a single application. It is a stack:
- Model: the language-model files that generate replies and determine the model’s capabilities.
- Runtime: software that loads those files and performs inference on your CPU, GPU or both. Ollama is one local runtime; LM Studio combines model management with a desktop interface and local server.
- Interface: the conversation layer where you configure prompts, history, characters and optional tools. SillyTavern is designed for character cards and roleplay; Open WebUI is a general-purpose self-hosted chat interface.
SillyTavern’s documentation is explicit that it is a locally installed interface and still requires an LLM backend. Its character cards describe a character’s behavior and support persistent conversations. Installing the interface alone therefore does not create an AI companion.
To avoid cloud charges, the interface must send prompts to your local runtime and not to a hosted model. A local-looking interface can still call cloud models, web search, hosted speech services or external authentication if you enable them.

Choose the experience before choosing software
| What you want | Best starting point | What it provides | What you still need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character-driven companion or roleplay | SillyTavern | Character cards, persistent conversations and a configurable local interface | A local model runtime and a model compatible with that runtime |
| General assistant chat | Open WebUI | Self-hosted chat interface that can connect to local or OpenAI-compatible endpoints | A prepared local inference service; local components for documents or speech if you use those features |
| Desktop model management with a local server | LM Studio | Model discovery, local downloads, chatting with downloaded models and local inference serving | Sufficient memory, storage and processing capacity for the model you select |
| Command-oriented local model service | Ollama | Local model runtime that other interfaces can connect to | A separate interface if you want character cards or a richer chat experience |
For a companion with a defined personality, start by selecting the character experience and then connect it to a runtime. For a private assistant that may later search your documents, start with Open WebUI but plan the document-retrieval components separately.
Check hardware, memory and storage realistically
There is no universal hardware minimum. The required resources change with model weights, context length, runtime overhead and other programs running on the computer. A larger context lets the companion remember more text in one request but consumes more memory. Speech, document retrieval and other local services add their own requirements.
GPU guidance
SillyTavern’s project documentation recommends an NVIDIA 3000-series graphics card with at least 6 GB of VRAM for local inference. That is a project recommendation, not a guarantee that every model will fit, run quickly or produce a satisfying experience. A model can exceed available VRAM, forcing some work into system memory and reducing responsiveness.
OpenClaw’s hardware guidance describes the variables that matter: model-weight size, context size, runtime choice and concurrent host activity. Use those variables to evaluate your own computer rather than treating 6 GB as a universal threshold.
Storage
Model files and persistent caches consume disk space. The amount depends on the model and any quantized variants you download. The documented offline setup process requires room for the model files and caches, but it does not establish one SSD capacity that fits every configuration. If your internal disk is nearly full, an external SSD can be a practical optional expansion; it is not required for every local installation.
A practical preflight checklist
- Record available system RAM and GPU VRAM.
- Check free disk space before downloading a model or runtime components.
- Decide how much conversation context you expect to keep.
- Allow additional resources if you want local document search, text-to-speech or speech recognition.
- Close memory-heavy applications during initial testing so you measure the model on realistic but controlled hardware.
If the computer is shared with work, games or other demanding software, leave headroom rather than planning around every last gigabyte. A model that technically loads may still be impractical when the operating system and interface need memory too.
Set up the companion while you are online
Downloading is a connected phase. LM Studio’s offline-operation documentation says model search, model downloads, runtime downloads and update checks require connectivity. Once the required files are present, chatting with downloaded models, chatting with documents and serving inference locally can work without an internet connection.

Install SillyTavern for a character-card companion or Open WebUI for general assistant chat. Keep the interface and runtime on the same computer if your goal is the simplest privacy boundary.
- Install a local runtime. Use Ollama, LM Studio’s local server or another runtime supported by your chosen interface. Let the runtime install any required components while online.
- Choose a model that fits. Start with a model whose weights and intended context fit your available RAM and VRAM. Do not assume that the largest or newest model is the best choice for your machine.
- Download the model and supporting files. Complete model downloads, runtime downloads and any required tokenizer or configuration downloads before disconnecting.
- Launch a plain chat test. Send a short prompt and confirm that the response is generated locally. Test again after restarting the interface so you know the model can be found from persistent storage.
- Connect the interface to the local endpoint. In Open WebUI, select the local model provider rather than an Ollama cloud model or another hosted endpoint. In SillyTavern, select the local backend and verify that the character card is using it.
- Configure the companion. Import or create a character card in SillyTavern, or define the assistant’s system instructions in your general chat interface. Keep the prompt focused; personality instructions cannot compensate for a model that does not fit the hardware.
- Prepare optional local services. If you plan to chat with documents, install local embedding and document-extraction components. If you plan to use speech, obtain local speech models, voices and their dependencies. A successful text-only chat does not prove these features are local or ready.
- Test the exact workflow. Exercise character memory, document retrieval, speech and any tools you intend to use. Restart once with persistent storage enabled, then repeat the tests after removing internet access.
Can you run an LLM without internet?
Yes, after the connected preparation is complete. The important distinction is between discovery and preparation and inference. Searching for models, downloading model or runtime files and checking for updates require a connection. Generating a reply from a model already stored on the computer can work offline.
Disconnect only after a successful restart test. Launch the runtime, open the interface and send a prompt with the network disabled. Then test the features that matter to you, not just a blank text chat. For example, ask the companion to continue an existing conversation, retrieve a previously indexed document or process a microphone recording. A plain reply verifies text inference only; it does not verify every dependency.
Offline operation also means accepting less convenience. You cannot search a model catalog, download a missing voice, install a parser or apply an update while disconnected. Plan a controlled maintenance window in which you reconnect, download known files and then test offline operation again.

Make “offline” mean what you intend
There are two different claims: inference is local and the computer cannot send data outside the machine. The first is a software configuration. The second requires network controls.
What vendor documentation says
Ollama’s privacy policy states: “We don’t see your prompts or data when you run locally.” LM Studio’s offline-operation documentation states: “Nothing you enter into LM Studio when chatting with LLMs leaves your device.” These statements describe the vendors’ documented local modes; they are not an independent network audit of your particular computer or setup.
Open WebUI’s offline tutorial gives the necessary qualification: “Running the interface locally does not make those services local.” It also warns, “These variables do not block outbound connections.” In other words, a local interface can still reach a cloud model, hosted search, an external speech provider, an identity service or another configured dependency.
Audit every connection
- Confirm the selected model is stored locally and the provider is a local runtime.
- Disable cloud-model choices and hosted web-search tools.
- Check document embedding and extraction settings; install local equivalents if documents contain sensitive material.
- Use local speech recognition, synthesis and voice files if speech must remain private.
- Review OAuth, telemetry and update-check behavior before disconnecting.
- Inspect any plug-ins or external tools attached to the interface.
Use network controls for a hard boundary
Open WebUI’s settings do not function as a firewall. If your requirement is that the companion must be unable to make outbound requests, apply operating-system firewall rules, restrict container networking or physically isolate the computer. Test the restriction after the software is configured; do not infer it from the presence of a local URL or a “local” label.
Keep personal chat data on the device
Keeping prompts and conversation history on the computer requires checking the entire path from the interface to every enabled service. Local model inference helps, but a cloud fallback, hosted search plug-in or external login can still transmit information. Review the provider selected for every model, not only the default model shown on the home screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Confirm where conversations, character cards, document indexes and configuration files are saved, and make sure the location is on the intended disk. If you move a model or interface to another computer, the privacy boundary moves with it; do not assume a copied interface carries every model and index along automatically.
For sensitive material, test with the network removed and inspect the application’s behavior during startup and shutdown. A local URL proves that the interface is reachable on the machine, not that every optional service is local.
Prepare documents and speech as separate projects
Private document chat
Retrieval-augmented chat normally needs an embedding model to index text and a document-extraction component to read files. Both must be local if the documents are not allowed to leave the machine. Install and test those components while online, then disconnect and verify that an existing indexed document can still be searched. Adding a document after disconnection may fail if your setup has not already downloaded the required parser or embedding model.
Document retrieval also consumes memory and disk space beyond the language model itself. Index only the files you need, keep the index on local storage and test a known document with the network disabled. If retrieval stops working, determine whether the failure is the extractor, embedding service, index location or language model rather than assuming the chat runtime is broken.
Private voice interaction
Speech adds at least recognition or synthesis models, voice data and runtime dependencies. A text conversation working offline proves only that text inference works. Test microphone input, transcription, response generation and audio playback separately after disabling the network.

Speech can be the first feature to reveal a hidden hosted dependency. Check whether the selected voice, speech-recognition engine and audio processing components are installed locally. If any one of them requires a remote API, the complete voice workflow is not offline.
Understand the real cost
A local setup can remove recurring cloud inference charges, but the reviewed documentation does not establish a total-cost comparison, payback period or guaranteed savings. Your costs may include:
- Existing hardware capacity or a new GPU, desktop or other computer upgrade.
- Disk space for models, caches, conversation history and document indexes.
- Electricity while the computer performs inference.
- Time spent selecting compatible models, configuring the interface and maintaining updates.
- Optional local speech, document and authentication components.
If your current computer runs the selected model acceptably, there may be no new hardware purchase. If it does not, buying hardware changes the economics; “no subscription” should never be presented as “zero cost.” An external SSD is an optional purchase only when internal storage is insufficient for the particular models and persistent data you plan to keep. A GPU or desktop upgrade is similarly conditional on the results of your hardware assessment.

Choose between common local architectures
| Architecture | Strength | Trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| LM Studio alone | Desktop-oriented model discovery, downloads and local chat | Character-card workflows may require a separate interface | Someone who wants the shortest path to testing local models |
| Ollama plus Open WebUI | Separates runtime from a flexible general chat interface | Two components and their connection must be maintained | General assistant use, document workflows and a self-hosted web interface |
| Ollama or another runtime plus SillyTavern | Character cards, roleplay controls and persistent companion conversations | Requires careful backend selection and model compatibility | A personality-driven private companion |
| Local interface with cloud fallbacks enabled | Convenience when local hardware cannot answer a request | Prompts may leave the machine and cloud charges can return | Only when privacy is not an absolute requirement |
Compare these choices by experience, hardware fit, setup effort, offline completeness and privacy control. A graphical model manager may be easier to begin with, while a separate runtime and interface can offer more flexibility. Neither arrangement is automatically more private: the selected endpoint and enabled services determine the data path.
Maintain the setup without losing the privacy boundary
Local software still needs maintenance. Model releases, runtime updates, interface updates and optional components may change compatibility or behavior. Because update checks and downloads require connectivity, decide in advance whether the machine may reconnect temporarily or must remain isolated.
When maintenance is necessary, record which model, runtime and interface versions work together. Download only the files you intend to install, disconnect again and rerun the same offline tests. Recheck cloud-model selections, plug-ins, document retrieval and speech after updates; an update can add or re-enable an option even when basic text chat still works.
Keep a local backup of character cards, system instructions and important conversation data. A backup supports recovery after a reinstall, but it also contains sensitive information, so store it on media you control.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The interface opens but produces no reply
- Confirm the runtime is running and the model is loaded.
- Check that the interface provider points to the local runtime, not a cloud endpoint.
- Send a short prompt with a smaller context and close other memory-heavy applications.
The model works, but responses are unusably slow
- Reduce context length and avoid running several local services simultaneously.
- Choose a smaller model or a quantized variant that fits available memory.
- Check whether the runtime is using the GPU as intended; insufficient VRAM can move work to system memory.
Chat works offline, but documents or speech fail
Plain text inference does not validate optional services. Check that local embedding, extraction, speech models, voices and dependencies were downloaded before disconnecting. Replace any hosted component with a local one and retest each feature independently.
Private mode still makes network requests
Review cloud-model selections, web search, plug-ins, OAuth providers, update checks and telemetry. Then enforce a firewall or network-isolation rule if preventing outbound traffic is a hard requirement. Open WebUI’s offline settings alone do not provide that guarantee.
The companion forgets earlier conversations
Check whether conversation history is being persisted and whether the selected context length is large enough for the amount of history you send. Character cards define behavior; they do not create unlimited memory. Keep persistent storage on the local disk and test recovery after a restart.

The model will not load
Compare the model’s weight size and requested context with available RAM and VRAM, then close other applications and try a smaller model. If the runtime can load only part of a model into GPU memory, performance may fall sharply. Treat a successful download as a file check, not proof that the model is suitable for your computer.

A final privacy and reliability checklist
- The model files are downloaded and stored on the computer.
- The interface is connected to a local runtime or local OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
- No cloud model, hosted search or external tool is enabled unintentionally.
- Document, embedding, extraction and speech services are local if you use them.
- The model fits available RAM, VRAM, context and disk space.
- The companion survives a restart with persistent storage configured.
- The intended workflow works after internet access is removed.
- Firewall, container or physical network controls are in place if outbound traffic must be blocked.
The practical result is a companion that can continue generating responses on your own hardware without a recurring cloud subscription. Its privacy depends on the complete data path—not merely on installing a local interface—and its affordability depends on hardware, power, storage and the model you choose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run an LLM without an internet connection?
Yes. Install the runtime, model and optional components while online, then test a downloaded model after disconnecting. Model discovery, downloads and update checks require connectivity, while local inference can continue offline.
Does installing SillyTavern make the AI companion local?
No. SillyTavern is an interface and still needs an LLM backend. Select a local runtime and verify that the character card is not sending prompts to a hosted model.
How do I keep AI chat data on my device?
Use a locally stored model and local runtime, disable cloud models and hosted search, and replace hosted document, embedding and speech services with local components. Use firewall or network-isolation rules when outbound traffic must be blocked.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What hardware do I need for a private companion?
Requirements vary with model weights, context length, runtime overhead and other programs. SillyTavern recommends an NVIDIA 3000-series GPU with at least 6 GB of VRAM for local inference, but that is guidance rather than a universal minimum or performance guarantee.
Do I need to buy an external SSD or new GPU?
Not necessarily. Buy additional storage only if the model files, caches and persistent data do not fit internally. Consider a GPU or desktop upgrade only after checking whether your selected model runs acceptably on your current hardware.
Can private document chat work offline?
Yes, if the embedding model, document extractor, index and language model are local and already installed. Test an existing indexed document after disconnecting; adding new files may require components that were not downloaded beforehand.
Why does a local interface still make network requests?
A local interface can have cloud models, web search, OAuth, hosted speech, plug-ins, telemetry or update checks enabled. Interface settings alone are not a firewall, so audit services and apply network controls for a hard boundary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is running a local AI companion free?
It can avoid recurring cloud-model charges, but it is not automatically free. Hardware, disk space, electricity, optional services and configuration time still have costs, and the available documentation does not establish a universal savings amount.
The Bottom Line
Use SillyTavern or Open WebUI as the interface, Ollama or LM Studio as the local runtime, and a model that fits your RAM, VRAM, context and storage. Download and test everything online, then verify the complete workflow offline. Local inference can remove subscription fees, but only a fully audited data path and, when necessary, firewall or network isolation provide the privacy boundary you intend.
