You can run an LLM without sending prompts to a cloud service, but “offline” requires more than installing a chat app. While the computer is online, install an inference runtime, download the model weights and dependencies, and verify a local chat session. Then disable network-dependent features, block outbound connections or disconnect the machine, and test again. LM Studio is the simplest graphical route; llama.cpp provides more command-line control and hardware-backend choices.

What “fully offline” actually means

A local model runs its inference on your computer instead of uploading each prompt to a provider’s server. The model files, tokenizer, runtime, conversation processing and response generation all remain on the machine. That removes the need for an internet connection during ordinary prompting, but it does not automatically make the entire application offline.

Desktop runtimes may include optional update checks, telemetry, model catalogs, web search, plug-ins, cloud synchronization or remote tool connectors. A local chat window can therefore coexist with network traffic unless you audit and disable those features. For a strict offline setup, treat “offline” as an operating condition that you verify, not as a marketing label.

  • Online preparation: obtain the runtime, model weights, dependencies and any required drivers while you still have connectivity.
  • Local inference: load the model and confirm that a prompt is answered without a cloud account or remote endpoint.
  • Network isolation: disable optional online features, disconnect the computer or block outbound traffic with the operating-system firewall.
  • Repeatable operation: retain installers, model files, checksums when supplied, license information and configuration notes so the setup can be rebuilt later.

Choose the right offline runtime

Runtime Best fit Interface Acceleration and control Offline considerations
LM Studio People who want a desktop chat application with minimal command-line work Graphical interface, with local chat and local-server capabilities Uses the hardware support provided by the application and operating system; model choice and context settings remain important Can operate entirely offline after the model files are present, but optional network features still need an audit
llama.cpp Users who want scripting, custom builds, or detailed control over inference Command line and a local HTTP server Build options include CPU, Vulkan, CUDA, Metal and SYCL-related paths, depending on the platform and build Keep the executable, libraries and model files locally; bind a server to a local address and firewall it as appropriate

LM Studio documents local use of models such as Qwen, Mistral, Gemma and gpt-oss. llama.cpp is a lower-level implementation, so you choose how to build it and which backend to use. Neither runtime eliminates the need to check a model’s license or to confirm that the selected build actually uses the accelerator you intended.

How much computer hardware do you need?

There is no universal RAM or VRAM minimum for local LLMs. The practical requirement changes with the model’s parameter size, quantization, context length, operating system, runtime and acceleration backend. A model that loads on one computer may be too large or too slow on another even when both machines have the same nominal amount of memory.

Model size and quantization

Model weights are the files that contain the learned parameters. Larger models generally require more memory and take longer to load. Quantization stores weights at reduced numerical precision, usually making the files smaller and reducing memory pressure at a possible quality or compatibility cost. Check the exact quantized file you downloaded rather than assuming that every file for a model has the same requirements.

Context length

The context window contains the instructions, conversation history and other text supplied to the model. Increasing it can raise memory use even when the model weights do not change. Start with a modest context setting, then increase it only if the workload requires longer documents or conversations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CPU, GPU and unified memory

CPU inference is possible, but generation speed depends on the processor, the runtime and the model. A supported GPU or accelerator can improve throughput, provided the model and its working data fit the available VRAM or unified memory. If they do not fit, the runtime may move some work to system RAM, which can make responses substantially slower.

LM Studio’s system-requirements documentation lists supported CPU and GPU families for Mac, Windows and Linux. It cautions: “You may still be able to use LM Studio on 8GB Macs, but stick to smaller models and modest context sizes.” That is a platform-specific caution, not a universal minimum for every local runtime or model.

Storage

Keep model files on a fast SSD when possible. Storage capacity determines how many runtimes and model variants you can retain; SSD speed mainly affects startup and model-loading time. Leave room for the operating system, the runtime, temporary files and any additional quantizations you may test.

A practical selection process

  1. Choose the task: short chat, coding, document work, summarization or a local API.
  2. Pick a model family and a quantized file that the runtime supports.
  3. Compare the file size with available RAM or VRAM, leaving headroom for the operating system and context.
  4. Begin with a modest context length and a single model loaded at a time.
  5. Only move to a larger model or longer context after confirming stable loading and acceptable response speed.

Prepare everything while the computer is online

Do the preparation phase before disconnecting the machine. If the computer will eventually be isolated permanently, use another trusted online computer to download files and transfer them with removable storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the runtime. Download LM Studio for a graphical workflow or obtain a llama.cpp build or source tree for a controlled command-line setup. Match the package to your operating system and processor architecture.
  2. Download model weights. Choose the model, format and quantization deliberately. Record the exact file name, model variant, license and any checksum supplied with the download.
  3. Install dependencies. Complete driver, runtime-library or accelerator requirements while online. A llama.cpp build using a GPU backend may require the corresponding vendor toolkit or driver; the exact requirement depends on the build path.
  4. Create a local inventory. Keep the installer, model files, dependency packages, configuration notes and license text in a directory that will remain available after disconnection.
  5. Load and test the model. Ask a simple prompt, then try a prompt representative of your real workload. Confirm that the response appears without a sign-in or a remote provider setting.
  6. Confirm the endpoint. If you use an API, verify that the client points to a local address such as 127.0.0.1 or localhost, not a hosted URL.

Run an offline model with LM Studio

1. Install and download a model

Install LM Studio while connected. Use its model browser or import function to obtain a compatible model file. Record the model name, quantization, license and file location. Do not assume that a model listed in an online catalog remains available after you disconnect; the actual weights must be present on the computer.

2. Start a local chat

Open the downloaded model in LM Studio and create a local chat. Send a short prompt first, then inspect the model-loading and generation behavior. If the application offers hardware or context controls, begin conservatively. A smaller context can prevent avoidable memory failures while you establish a baseline.

3. Check local-server settings if you need an API

LM Studio can expose a local server for applications that speak a compatible chat-completions interface. Set the server to a local bind address, note the port, and test it from a client on the same computer. Avoid enabling a public or network-wide bind unless you deliberately need access from another trusted device and understand the firewall implications.

4. Audit optional connectivity

Before disconnecting, review settings and menus for telemetry, update checks, web search, plug-ins, cloud synchronization, remote connectors and any feature that fetches data. Disable what you do not need. If a feature cannot be clearly made local, leave it unused in the offline configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Disconnect and test again

Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, or apply an outbound firewall rule. Reopen the model and submit another prompt. A successful response with no connection should come from the local weights rather than from a cached web result or a cloud fallback.

Run an offline model with llama.cpp

1. Choose or build the appropriate backend

llama.cpp supports multiple hardware paths, including CPU, Vulkan, CUDA, Metal and SYCL-related builds. Use the path that matches your operating system and hardware. A CPU build is the simplest baseline; an accelerator build can improve speed when its dependencies and memory fit are correct.

2. Keep the model in a local format

Place the downloaded model file and tokenizer data, if supplied separately, in a permanent local directory. Record the exact quantization and checksum. The executable and model must both remain available after the network is removed.

3. Start an interactive local session

The exact executable name varies by package, but a typical command-line invocation has the form llama-cli -m /path/to/model.gguf. Replace the path with your actual file and consult the build’s included help output for options. Start with a modest context setting and confirm that the prompt is answered locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Start a local API server when required

A typical llama.cpp server invocation has the form llama-server -m /path/to/model.gguf --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8080. Treat this as an example pattern: executable names and flags can differ between builds. The important controls are the local model path and a loopback bind address. Test the endpoint from a client on the same computer before isolating the machine.

5. Verify accelerator use

Watch startup output and operating-system resource monitors to confirm that the intended backend is active. If a supposed GPU build silently falls back to the CPU, check the driver, build variant, model fit and backend-specific options before judging performance.

6. Isolate the server

Stop any server you do not need. For a server that remains running, bind it to loopback and block unsolicited inbound and outbound traffic with the firewall. A local API is not automatically private if it listens on every network interface.

Make the computer genuinely offline

Use both application controls and operating-system controls. Relying on only one layer can leave an unexpected connection path active after an update or configuration change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Disable telemetry: turn off diagnostic or usage reporting where the runtime provides a setting.
  • Disable update checks: automatic update mechanisms need connectivity and may run at startup.
  • Disable web search: a local model should not be supplemented by remote search in a strict offline workflow.
  • Disable plug-ins and remote tools: connectors can send prompts or tool inputs outside the computer.
  • Pause cloud synchronization: synced chat histories, model folders or logs can leave the machine even when inference is local.
  • Disconnect the network: turn off wireless networking and remove wired connections for the clearest isolation.
  • Use firewall rules: block outbound traffic for the runtime and related helper processes when physical disconnection is impractical.
  • Keep local copies: retain installers, model weights, dependency packages and documentation so maintenance does not require an emergency connection.

After an application update, repeat the feature audit. New versions can add defaults, background services or integrations that were not present in the original installation.

Prove that offline operation works

  1. Record the model file, runtime version or build, backend and context setting used for the test.
  2. Disconnect the computer or activate the firewall rules.
  3. Launch the runtime from its local installation rather than an online installer or catalog.
  4. Send a prompt whose answer is not already displayed in a cached page.
  5. If using an API, send a request to the loopback address and confirm a response.
  6. Check the application’s status area and the operating system’s network indicator for unexpected activity.
  7. Stop the runtime, start it again while still disconnected and repeat a short prompt.

Offline operation does not mean the model has current information. Without a local document set or another local data source, its knowledge remains limited to what was present in its training and what you provide in the prompt.

Troubleshoot common failures

The model will not load

  • Confirm that the file is complete and in a format supported by the runtime.
  • Check available RAM or VRAM and reduce the context length.
  • Try a smaller quantized variant or close other memory-heavy applications.
  • Verify that the accelerator build and drivers match the hardware; otherwise test a CPU path.

Generation is extremely slow

  • Confirm that the intended GPU or accelerator backend is actually active.
  • Reduce context length and avoid loading multiple models simultaneously.
  • Use a smaller model or a quantization that fits the available memory without extensive transfer between VRAM and system RAM.
  • Move the model to a faster SSD if startup and swapping, rather than token generation, is the bottleneck.

The application asks for a sign-in or internet connection

That usually indicates an optional catalog, account feature, update process or remote integration rather than a requirement for local inference. Finish downloading the model and dependencies while online, disable the feature if possible, and test the local model independently. If the runtime cannot start without a service that you cannot run locally, choose a runtime or build that supports standalone files.

A local API cannot be reached

  • Confirm that the server process is running and that the client uses the same port.
  • Use 127.0.0.1 or localhost when both programs run on one computer.
  • Check firewall rules for the local process.
  • Review the server’s startup output for the actual listening address and model-loading errors.

The model produces unexpected or low-quality answers

Check the model variant, quantization and prompt format. Different model families have different instruction conventions. A smaller or more aggressively quantized model may also trade some quality for lower memory use. Keep a known-good prompt in your local notes so you can separate configuration problems from model limitations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security, privacy and licensing decisions

Local inference reduces transmission of prompts, but it does not protect data that is later copied into synced folders, logs, backups or removable media. Decide where conversations are stored and who can access the computer. Use operating-system accounts and disk protection appropriate to the sensitivity of the material.

Read the model license before using it for work, redistribution or a product. Record the license alongside the weights because a model’s runtime and its weights can have different terms. Keep the source and checksum supplied for each file; this helps you detect an incomplete or altered transfer when rebuilding the machine.

For sensitive deployments, maintain two configurations: an online preparation environment and a clean offline runtime environment. Transfer only the installer, dependencies, model files and configuration that you have reviewed. This makes the boundary easier to audit than repeatedly reconnecting the production computer.

LM Studio or llama.cpp: which should you pick?

Choose LM Studio when the priority is a visual workflow: download a supported model, load it in a desktop interface, chat locally and optionally expose a local server. It is the shorter path for users who do not want to compile software or manage command-line flags.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose llama.cpp when you need repeatable scripts, custom compilation, backend selection or a lightweight local server under your own process controls. It demands more attention to builds, paths and options, but gives you finer control over how inference is launched and isolated.

Decision Prefer LM Studio Prefer llama.cpp
Installation effort Packaged graphical application Build or select a platform-specific executable
Daily use Point-and-click model loading and chat Scripts, terminal sessions and service management
Hardware experimentation Use the application’s supported configuration Choose among CPU, Vulkan, CUDA, Metal and SYCL-related build paths
Automation Use the local server after configuring it Direct control over command-line and server startup
Maintenance burden Lower for a single desktop user, but audit updates and optional services Higher responsibility for builds, dependencies, flags and model paths

Keep the setup reproducible

  • Store the runtime installer or build archive, model weights and dependency packages together.
  • Write down the operating system, runtime build, model file name, quantization, context setting and backend.
  • Save a checksum when one is supplied and verify it after copying the model.
  • Keep a short offline test prompt and the expected form of a successful response.
  • Document firewall rules and which optional features were disabled.
  • Recheck licenses before sharing the model or using it in a commercial workflow.

This record matters when a model is replaced, a drive fails or an update changes behavior. It also lets you compare two configurations without confusing a model change with a hardware or runtime change.

What to remember

Download first, then isolate. A working local chat session is only the midpoint: a fully offline system also disables network-dependent features, uses a local endpoint, blocks unexpected traffic and retains all files needed for recovery. Hardware requirements must be evaluated against the specific model, quantization, context and backend rather than reduced to a single RAM or VRAM number.
