To brainstorm in Lucidspark, give the group a clear question, capture ideas on a shared board, organize related notes, and use voting to decide what deserves follow-up. A practical session moves through preparation, idea generation, review, and prioritization; the best format depends on whether people are working live or asynchronously and which collaboration features their plan includes.
1. Define the question and prepare the session
Start with one specific question the group can answer. State what a useful outcome looks like—for example, a set of possible solutions to evaluate, rather than an open-ended discussion. Send a short agenda and any relevant context before participants join. Lucid recommends choosing a format that fits the group and deciding whether the work will happen live, asynchronously, or in a mix of both. See Lucid’s guide to effective brainstorms.
For a live session, tell participants how long each phase will last and what they should do on the board. For asynchronous work, explain when to add ideas and when the group will return to review them. This gives contributors a shared frame without requiring everyone to generate ideas in the same way.
2. Choose a board structure
Open a brainstorming template when the group would benefit from prompts or a defined sequence; use a blank canvas when the question needs a less structured approach. Lucid offers brainstorming and reverse-brainstorming templates, while a template can provide a starting structure without limiting participants to its prompts. Before the session, put the main question and any useful context where participants can see them. If you plan to use separate phases, label an area for idea capture and another for review or next steps. Keep the board’s structure understandable at a glance so the group spends its time contributing rather than navigating.
3. Capture ideas before evaluating them
Invite each participant to add one idea per sticky note. Short, separate notes are easier to move, compare, and group than long paragraphs. Participants can also use images, freehand marks, and other visual material to express ideas. Lucid describes both digital collaboration and a hybrid workflow: “Start ideating or brainstorming on handwritten Post-it® Notes, and capture and add them to a Lucidspark board in seconds.” See Lucid’s brainstorming use case. Paper notes are optional; the digital board does not require them.
Make the first phase about generating possibilities, not defending or ranking them. If participants need time to think independently, let them add notes before discussion begins. A visible timer can help the facilitator move between idea generation, review, and voting. Lucid’s guide suggests 15–30 minutes as a target for a short brainstorm; this is guidance for session planning, not a measured universal optimum.

4. Adapt the format to group size and participation style
Use Breakout Boards for smaller-group work
For a large group, smaller working groups can make it easier for people to contribute before ideas return to the main board. Lucidspark’s Breakout Boards let participants work separately and then return to share. The facilitator can call participants back to the main board, and a Lucid document can contain up to 50 Breakout Boards. The feature is Enterprise-only, according to the Lucid Help Center guide to Breakout Boards.
Use Private mode when independent input matters
Private mode hides the contents and authors of newly created sticky notes while the session is active, which can reduce the influence of earlier ideas on later contributions. An Enterprise user with Edit permission must start the session; active collaborators can participate. The facilitator can configure whether authors become visible afterward. Explain these visibility rules before people begin. Details are in the Lucid Help Center guide to Private mode.
Choose live, asynchronous, or mixed participation
A live session supports immediate discussion and facilitation. Asynchronous contribution gives people time to add ideas on their own schedules. A mixed format can collect ideas in advance and reserve a live meeting for grouping and decisions. Lucid describes both real-time and asynchronous collaboration; decide which approach fits the group before inviting participants.

5. Group related ideas with Gather
After capturing ideas, review the notes and group related ones so patterns become easier to discuss. Lucidspark’s Gather feature can organize sticky notes by keyword, color, tag, reaction, or vote. Gather is listed for Free, Individual, Team, and Enterprise plans in the Lucid Help Center guide to Gather.
Clustering is a way to make the board more legible, not a substitute for the group’s judgment. Check the resulting groups with participants, rename or adjust them when needed, and keep distinct ideas visible rather than forcing them into a category that does not fit.
6. Prioritize ideas with a Voting session
Once the group has reviewed the ideas, use a Voting session to identify which ones merit follow-up. The facilitator can set the vote allotment, eligible object types, instructions, and a timer; private voting is also an option. Voting facilitation is available on Team and Enterprise plans, while the Help Center says all registered users can participate. Private voting can conceal voter identity in the results. Explain what participants are voting for before starting—such as the most promising ideas to investigate, rather than a final decision. Record the result in context and discuss any important considerations that a vote alone cannot resolve.

Close by recording the selected ideas, who will follow up, and where the output will be used. Assigning an owner and a next step turns a board of suggestions into work the group can act on. Lucid describes AI-supported summarization of conclusions and action items, but AI access may vary by account or region; confirm availability in the account before relying on it.
