To run an ambient music playlist on YouTube Live at 4K and 60 fps, send a continuous 3840×2160 progressive video feed from an encoder to a YouTube Live Control Room event, use codec-specific settings from YouTube’s current encoder guidance, and make sure every track is cleared for live use. Test the complete playlist and network before scheduling a long broadcast; YouTube can interrupt a stream when it detects third-party content.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
- An encoder capable of producing sustained 3840×2160 video at 60 fps, plus a way to play and loop the ambient playlist.
- Upload bandwidth with room for the entire outgoing stream, including audio and any other traffic.
- Music whose rights permit a live broadcast on your channel. A license for an ordinary uploaded video may not cover livestreaming.
“4K/60” describes the incoming encoder feed. YouTube transcodes live video into formats viewers can play, so a viewer’s available resolution depends on their device and connection.
Prepare the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room. Create an event or schedule it for the intended start time.
- In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your event. Keep it private and reset it if exposed.
- Confirm the event’s visibility, title, description, and scheduled start time. Check the preview in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the stream URL and key. Labeling and privacy settings affect the event page; they do not replace the encoder settings below.

Video resolution, frame rate, and codec
Set the encoder output to progressive 3840×2160 (2160p) at 60 frames per second, and make sure the source and playback pipeline can sustain that mode. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Choose a codec supported by both your encoder and the specific YouTube ingest configuration you are using; do not assume that every encoder or ingest path supports every codec.

For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit video. Avoid unnecessary scaling or frame-rate conversion: an encoder cannot create genuine detail or smooth motion that is absent from its source.
Bitrate and keyframes
Use the bitrate table for your selected codec and locale on YouTube’s encoder settings page. The English table accessed in 2026 recommends 35 Mbps for H.264 at 4K/2160p and 60 fps, and gives a 10–40 Mbps range for AV1 and H.265. A regional version returned in the same search recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265, with codec-specific minimums. These are differing YouTube tables, not a single universal setting; follow the current table shown for your configuration instead of combining their numbers.

Use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of a stable broadcast.
Audio
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. For a conventional stereo ambient stream, stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps is a straightforward supported setting in YouTube’s guidance. Keep levels consistent across tracks and transitions, and listen to the encoder or Live Control Room preview. For 5.1 audio, YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC.

Check upload capacity and test the full playlist
Leave bandwidth headroom
YouTube advises leaving 20% headroom above the total outgoing stream bitrate. The relevant measure is sustained upload capacity, not download speed. Include audio, other devices using the connection, and any backup feed when estimating the load. If the connection cannot maintain the required upload rate with headroom, lower the stream bitrate or improve the connection before going live.
For example, if the selected video and audio settings together require roughly 35 Mbps, a connection that only uploads at 35 Mbps leaves no room for fluctuations or competing traffic. YouTube’s recommendation and streaming tips are on its encoder settings page and streaming tips page.

Run a representative test
- Start with the actual playlist, video motion, encoder, and audio settings you plan to use. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for resolution, frame rate, sound, and stream-health messages.
- Listen through several track changes. Check for abrupt volume changes, silent gaps, clipping, and whether playback returns to the start as intended.
- Test the loop or playlist restart behavior and the visual output for a period long enough to expose problems that a brief preview might miss.
- Stop the test event if necessary, then confirm the scheduled event and encoder are pointed at the correct stream key before the real broadcast.
Go live and monitor stream health
- Open the correct event in Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder preview is present.
- Start the encoder’s broadcast output, then use YouTube’s on-screen controls to start the event if it does not begin automatically.
- Watch stream health and any warnings during the broadcast. Check that the audio remains present and that the playlist continues through transitions and loops.
- If you use live chat, tell viewers that replies may be delayed: at 4K/2160p, YouTube says low-latency optimization is unavailable and normal latency is used.
Clear the music for livestreaming
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. It warns that a placeholder may replace the live picture after a match and that continued use can temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Its copyright guidance for live streams states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.”

- Do not assume that “ambient,” “royalty-free,” a paid download, attribution in the description, or permission for standard videos automatically covers a livestream.
- For a direct license, verify that it covers live streaming, the intended territories, the broadcast duration, and monetization if you plan to monetize. Confirm that the relevant composition and recording rights are covered.
- If the music is licensed from a rights holder, ask them to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted.
- Keep written permission and any license records accessible while you stream.
Creator Music does not license live streams
Creator Music is not a live-stream licensing route: YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says, “Currently, Creator Music doesn’t support licensing for live content.” Its usage details also limit Creator Music tracks to long-form videos, not livestreams or Shorts. Access is currently described as available to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with broader expansion pending; access and terms vary by track and region.

Use Audio Library tracks according to their terms
YouTube describes the YouTube Audio Library as a source of royalty-free production music and sound effects that are copyright-safe for YouTube. Check each track’s displayed license. Some Creative Commons tracks require attribution; use the attribution text generated in YouTube Studio when required. YouTube says Audio Library downloads will not be claimed through Content ID by a rights holder. That guidance is specific to YouTube and does not establish that third-party libraries are safe for every use or provide legal advice for use elsewhere.
