Use a cloud encoder as the always-on machine. Prepare and rights-clear your prerecorded news segments, create a YouTube live event, copy its stream key into the cloud service, start the stream, confirm the preview and stream-health indicators, and then close the browser or turn off your computer. The cloud encoder keeps sending the playlist to YouTube and can recover from a dropped connection.
This setup is for a continuous prerecorded channel. A newsroom with reporters, live interviews, rapidly changing sources, or live switching still needs a monitored production workflow. In either case, YouTube requires a verified channel in good standing, correctly configured ingest, and content you are licensed to use.
What actually stays on when your computer is off

- Preparation: Your phone or computer edits, checks, and uploads clips, graphics, narration, and music.

Requirements before you publish
YouTube account eligibility
- Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days.
- The person streaming must be at least 16 years old.
- Plan for encoder streaming rather than a webcam-only workflow when you need prerecorded files, graphics, overlays, or a continuous playlist.
- Keep the stream key secret. If it is exposed, stop the feed and replace the key in YouTube before restarting.
A rights-cleared media library
Clear every element before it enters the playlist: reporter footage, agency or wire clips, still images, music beds, sound effects, fonts, maps, logos, and third-party graphics. A license for a clip may not cover its music or embedded footage. Keep written permissions and the license period with the asset so an editor can remove a disputed item quickly.
Build a replacement playlist as well as the primary one. If a clip is removed, claimed, corrupted, or found to contain an error, you need a safe item to play while the editor investigates. A loop does not excuse corrections: label dated reports, update superseded information, and maintain a takedown path.
Reliable source files
Use files that have been watched from beginning to end. Check that every item has the expected frame rate, clean audio, and no accidental long silence or black tail. Keep filenames and a simple running order so a remote operator can identify the item that is live. If your files exceed the cloud service’s storage allowance, make a shorter rotation or remove old versions rather than letting an upload fail at the final step.
DIY method with a local encoder
This workflow shows what a local OBS-class encoder does. It is useful for testing, live switching, or a newsroom that deliberately keeps an encoder machine online. It does not satisfy the “computer off” requirement until you move the same media and settings to a cloud encoder.
- Prepare the scene. Install and update your encoder, create a scene for the news output, and add your prerecorded media source. Enable looping for a single master file, or use a playlist-capable source and arrange clips in the required order. A single continuously rendered file is a practical fallback when the encoder cannot advance a playlist reliably.
- Add production elements. Place the channel bug, lower thirds, ticker, captions, and emergency slate in the scene. Keep an offline slate ready for a rights dispute or editorial correction; do not leave a frozen frame or silent source on air.
- Create the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream, choose the intended privacy and start time, and copy the stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password and never paste it into a public document or chat.
- Select the secure ingest. Choose YouTube’s RTMPS server or the equivalent secure endpoint in your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the server address supplied in your YouTube event rather than an address copied from an old project.
- Set video encoding. Use H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says the interval should never exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate; the published H.264 guidance is shown below.
- Set audio encoding. Use AAC or MP3 audio, confirm the correct source is selected, and monitor the meters while a representative clip plays. A video can look healthy while sending silence, the wrong microphone, or clipped music.
- Test before the first long run. Start the encoder with representative motion and audio, inspect YouTube’s preview, and wait for stable stream-health indicators. Test a transition between two clips, an item with captions, and your emergency slate rather than testing only a static logo.
- Start and monitor. Start streaming from the encoder, verify that YouTube is receiving data, and watch health warnings and dropped frames. Keep the encoder, network, and power available for the entire broadcast. Closing the program, putting the computer to sleep, losing the network, or installing an update ends the feed.
Encoder settings that matter
The following figures are YouTube’s published H.264 guidance for the stated modes. They are ingest targets, not a promise that every source will look good at every bitrate.

Frame rate, codec, motion, and the complexity of graphics affect the result, so do not blindly apply a 1080p number to a different format. Keep keyframes at two seconds unless your encoder and YouTube event specify otherwise, and never use an interval over four seconds. If the source is 30 fps, encoding it at 60 fps does not create new detail; it increases the amount of data the encoder must handle.
Verify the stream before turning anything off
- Open the YouTube live control room and confirm that the preview shows the intended program, not a test slate or the wrong event.
- Check stream-health indicators for incoming video, bitrate stability, audio presence, and dropped frames.
- Let a representative segment run through a transition and an item with the loudest expected audio before you stop local work.
- Confirm that the cloud or local dashboard reports the stream as running, not merely that YouTube has a scheduled event.
- Only after the feed is stable should you close the browser or shut down the preparation computer. The encoder must remain online if it is local; with a cloud encoder, the cloud job remains active.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API exposes health information that can help diagnose insufficient incoming video. A warning is a reason to investigate immediately, not evidence that viewers are receiving a clean signal.

Continuity, editorial control, and policy
Automatic recovery has limits
Reconnection helps with a transient network or ingest failure. It cannot repair an expired or exposed stream key, a suspended channel, a removed file, a rights claim, a full storage allocation, or an editorial error. Keep the replacement playlist and emergency slate accessible, and check the dashboard on a schedule appropriate to the risk of your coverage.
24/7 does not mean unattended journalism
A loop is a delivery format, not a reporting operation. Assign a person to review new developments, replace outdated segments, answer rights notices, and publish corrections. If the story changes quickly, pause the loop and move to a live production workflow rather than letting an old report appear current.
Copyright and reused-content risk
Cloud hosting does not make a clip lawful. You remain responsible for licenses and for YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies. Repeated or lightly edited material can receive additional scrutiny under reused-content rules, and a stream can lose monetization or be removed even when its encoder is technically perfect. Use the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a rotation, retain proof of permission, and remove disputed material promptly.

Do not promise uptime or monetization
Neither a local encoder nor a cloud service guarantees uninterrupted delivery, audience growth, or approval for the YouTube Partner Program. Publish a contact route and correction policy so viewers know how to report a stale or inaccurate segment.
Troubleshooting a 24/7 stream
YouTube shows no incoming video
Likely causes: The encoder is stopped, the wrong event or server is selected, the stream key has been mistyped or replaced, or the cloud job has not been started.
Fix: Compare the event and server with the current YouTube control room, replace the key if necessary, start the encoder, and wait for the preview and health indicators. If the key was exposed, revoke and replace it rather than simply pasting it again.
The preview works but viewers see buffering or dropped frames
Likely causes: Bitrate is too high for the available upload path, the encoder cannot maintain CBR, keyframes are too far apart, or the local machine is overloaded.
Fix: Check the health dashboard and encoder statistics, use the published bitrate range for the chosen resolution and frame rate, set CBR, return the keyframe interval to two seconds, and reduce output complexity if the hardware is saturated. A cloud encoder removes the home upload and power path, but it does not correct an invalid source file or a YouTube-side restriction.

Likely causes: The wrong audio source is selected, the source is silent, the track is muted, or the encoder is using an unsupported audio configuration.
Fix: Play a known-good clip, watch the audio meters, select AAC or MP3, and verify the YouTube preview before starting a long loop. Replace a defective file instead of relying on automatic recovery.

The playlist stops after one item
Likely causes: Looping is disabled, the media source cannot advance between files, an upload is incomplete, or a file was removed.
Fix: Enable loop in the source or cloud studio, test the transition between two files, inspect the playlist order, and keep a single rendered master file as a fallback. Remove and re-upload a file that fails validation.

Likely causes: The license does not cover YouTube live use, the clip contains third-party music or footage, or the rights period has expired.
Fix: Move the disputed item to the replacement playlist, document the license, and follow YouTube’s claim or takedown process. Do not wait for reconnection to solve a rights problem; recovery software will keep sending the same disputed file.
YouTube restricts live streaming
Likely causes: The channel is not verified, a recent restriction is still within the relevant period, or the streamer is under the minimum age.
Fix: Check channel eligibility and account notices before scheduling another event. A cloud subscription cannot bypass a YouTube restriction.

Likely causes: No one is checking the running order, a breaking story has superseded the loop, or an old lower third remains on screen.

Fix: Assign review ownership, timestamp segments, maintain a correction slate, and replace or pause the playlist when the editorial situation changes. Continuous transmission is not a substitute for editorial review.
Cost and capacity decisions
A local encoder appears inexpensive only when you exclude the computer that must stay on, electricity, cooling, backup power, maintenance, the upload connection, and the time required to recover from a crash.
