How to run a 24/7 YouTube music livestream from uploaded videos

To run a nonstop YouTube music livestream from prerecorded videos, create a YouTube Live event, load a looping playlist into an encoder such as OBS Studio, and send the program to YouTube over RTMPS. The stream can continue indefinitely only while the encoder, internet connection, power and source files remain available. You must also clear every music, video, image and graphic right for the territories in which you stream.

What a 24/7 uploaded-video livestream actually is

A YouTube livestream is a continuous encoded feed, not a playlist that YouTube automatically repeats for you. Your encoder opens each prerecorded file, renders its video and audio, joins the files in sequence, and sends one uninterrupted RTMPS feed to the Live Control Room. When the last file ends, the playlist starts again.

Choose an implementation before you configure anything

There are two practical approaches. A local encoder gives you direct control but requires continuous power, bandwidth and supervision. A managed cloud service removes those home dependencies.

For a first stream, OBS is the clearest way to understand the signal path. If your priority is unattended operation rather than local control, put the cloud option first in your decision.

Check YouTube eligibility and channel status

1. Sign in to the channel that will own the broadcast and open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
2. Confirm that live streaming is enabled and that the channel has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. A recent restriction can prevent a new event even when the encoder is configured correctly.
3. Make sure the person operating the channel is at least 16 years old. YouTube’s current guidance sets 16 as the minimum age for livestreaming.
4. Complete any verification or waiting step YouTube displays before scheduling the event. Do this before preparing a public launch date.

Use a separate stream key for a production channel when possible. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it can send a feed to that event. Revoke or regenerate it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.

Clear music and visual rights before you build the playlist

Every track, recording, video clip, thumbnail element, logo, photograph and on-screen graphic needs a license or ownership that covers livestreaming in your intended territories. A purchase that permits personal listening or on-demand uploads may not include public live performance or worldwide streaming.

YouTube scans live feeds for matches to third-party content. A match can trigger a warning, replace the program with a placeholder, interrupt the stream or terminate it. If a rights owner licenses your music, ask that owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not stop an automated interruption.

Keep an evidence folder

• Store contracts, invoices, license IDs and territory terms for every recording.
• Record the permitted use (live, on-demand, monetized), duration and expiry date.
• Keep proof for commissioned artwork, stock footage and background loops as well as for audio.
• Remove tracks whose license has expired before the next playlist cycle.

Live Content ID matching is a restricted Content Manager capability, not a switch available to every channel. YouTube requires a proven Content ID operating record, time-sensitive content, a high likelihood of unauthorized copies, global rights and exclusive ownership. It also excludes material containing third-party static images, commercials or background music. Do not plan your ordinary channel around that feature.

Prepare videos that can loop cleanly

Use consistent technical properties

Mixed resolutions and frame rates are legal, but they create visible jumps and force the encoder to change scenes repeatedly. For a music channel, standardize the playlist where practical: use one canvas size, frame rate, loudness target and artwork treatment. If source files differ, test the transitions at the exact order and timing you will publish.

Design each file for a live audience

• Put the song title, artist and channel identity in a readable but non-intrusive area.
• Use artwork you own or have licensed; a static image does not grant permission to use the audio.
• End files cleanly. Avoid a long silent tail that looks like a frozen broadcast.
• Choose a playlist order that does not create an abrupt volume or visual change at the loop point.

Check storage and file access

Keep the files on a local drive that will not sleep, disconnect or fill during the broadcast. Use short, simple filenames and avoid moving files after you create the OBS playlist. A missing file can produce a blank or frozen scene unless you provide a fallback.

Create the YouTube event

1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and choose to schedule or create a stream.
2. Enter the title, description, thumbnail, category, visibility and intended start time. State clearly that the program is prerecorded if that is relevant to your audience.
3. Choose the stream latency setting that fits your chat needs. Lower latency can make interaction feel faster but leaves less buffer for an unstable connection.
4. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event. Do not publish the key in a document, screenshot or chat message.
5. Leave the event in a private or unlisted state while testing. Make it public only after the preview and health indicators are stable.

Configure OBS Studio for a continuous playlist

Install and create a dedicated scene

1. Install OBS Studio from its official distribution and run the automatic configuration wizard only as a starting point.
2. Create a scene named 24-7 Music. Add a Media Source and select the first video file.
3. Enable Loop only if you want that single file to repeat. For multiple files, use a playlist-capable media source or a VLC-based playlist source available in your OBS installation.
4. Add every file in the exact order you want. Enable looping for the playlist, and set the source to restart when it becomes active if your source type exposes that option.
5. Create a second scene named Fallback with a licensed still image, a short licensed audio bed or silence, and a text message such as “Next program loading.” Do not use unlicensed filler music.

Test a short copy of the playlist first. Confirm that OBS advances from one file to the next without a black frame, duplicated audio or a source that stops after the first item.

Set audio deliberately

• Watch the OBS mixer while the loudest track plays. Keep peaks below 0 dBFS; clipping cannot be repaired at YouTube’s end.
• Use one consistent loudness target across the catalog rather than compensating for each song with extreme gain.
• Disable unused microphone and desktop-audio inputs so an accidental notification or conversation is not broadcast.
• Monitor the audio meters during the first cycle and again after a playlist loop. A silent source can still show a connected video.

Add failure handling

Keep the Fallback scene ready for a file that fails to decode, a disconnected drive or a playlist source that stops. OBS does not automatically repair every media error. A human operator can switch scenes; a scripted setup can watch logs and restart the source, but test that automation before relying on it.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings instead of guessing

YouTube accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video ingestion, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding and up to 60 frames per second. RTMPS is the recommended transport: it is the secure extension of the common RTMP protocol.

Select the video bitrate from YouTube’s published encoder table for your chosen resolution and frame rate; do not invent a single number that fits every mode. Run an upload-speed test at the location and time you will stream, then leave headroom for overhead and other household traffic. A connection that barely reaches the target can still fail when someone uploads a file or the provider’s rate fluctuates.

Enter the stream in OBS

1. Open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if OBS offers the integration, or select a custom service and paste YouTube’s RTMPS server URL.
2. Paste the event’s stream key into the key field. Never paste the key into the video description.
3. Open Settings → Output, choose advanced output if you need separate streaming controls, select CBR, set the bitrate from YouTube’s table, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds.
4. Set the output resolution and frame rate to the values your source, encoder and upload connection can sustain continuously.
5. Apply the settings, close the dialog, and run a short private test before scheduling the public event.

Test the complete path before going public

1. Start the OBS stream while the YouTube event is private or unlisted.
2. Play representative material: a quiet track, the loudest track, a file with complex motion and the transition at the playlist loop.
3. In Live Control Room, watch stream-health messages, dropped frames, ingest status, audio meters and the preview. Also watch OBS’s dropped-frame and encoder indicators.
4. Stop and restart the encoder once. Confirm that the event reconnects as expected and that the playlist resumes or switches to the fallback scene according to your design.
5. Open the watch page from a different network or device. Check lip-sync, artwork, volume, captions if used, chat settings and the visible title.
6. Only after the test is clean, switch visibility to public or start the scheduled event.

Operate the stream for days, not just minutes

Monitor the signals that can fail

• Internet: watch sustained upload throughput, packet loss and reconnect messages.
• Encoder: check CPU/GPU load, dropped frames, disk errors and whether the media source advances.
• Audio: verify meters move and that no input has been muted or disconnected.
• YouTube: read stream-health warnings and copyright notices promptly.
• Power and temperature: disable sleep, prevent automatic updates from rebooting the machine, and keep cooling unobstructed.

Plan a human check

A 24/7 stream still needs an owner. Schedule checks at the first playlist loop, after any source-file change, and at regular intervals thereafter. Keep the stream key, recovery instructions and rights folder accessible to an authorized operator, not to the public.

Troubleshooting: symptom, cause and fix

Understand monetization and reused-content limits

Permission to stream a recording does not guarantee monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and expect original, authentic value rather than mass-produced or repetitive programming. YouTube identifies collections of songs from different artists, minimally changed reused material and content uploaded by others as examples that may not monetize even when permission exists or no copyright claim appears.

For the strongest eligibility case, build programming you control: original recordings, commentary or educational context where appropriate, distinctive visuals, meaningful scheduling and clear ownership of every element. Keep all audio and visual rights cleared for monetization, and review the current policy in YouTube Studio before making revenue projections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave OBS running unattended for weeks?

You can, but reliability depends on uninterrupted power, storage, internet, operating-system updates and encoder recovery. Disable sleep, test reconnects and schedule health checks before treating a local machine as unattended.

Does a music livestream need a new stream key every day?

No. You can reuse the event’s key while that event remains active, but regenerate it immediately if it is exposed. Create a new event when you need a different title, schedule or access arrangement.

Will a license automatically prevent a copyright interruption?

No. YouTube’s automated matching can interrupt a licensed stream unless the rights owner has added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Keep documentation and resolve claims with the owner.

Can repetitive song loops be monetized?

Not necessarily. YouTube evaluates live streams under its monetization and reused-content policies; repetitive or minimally changed collections may be ineligible even when you have permission.
