Use neural machine translation (NMT) when a request needs a fast, consistent translation and segment-level context is enough. Consider a translation-specialized large language model (LLM) when document context or natural reformulation may improve the result—and only if tests on your language pair and content show that benefit is worth the added latency, risk, and operating cost. No model class is best for every production request; route on measured workload evidence, not a blanket rule.

What is the practical difference between NMT and LLM translation?

NMT systems are translation-focused models that typically process text in segments. LLMs can work with broader context, including an entire document, and may produce more natural reformulations. That contextual flexibility can help in some cases, but it also creates a risk: an LLM may add content that was not present in the source. Microsoft’s translation guidance describes these trade-offs; Google Cloud likewise distinguishes its NMT and Translation LLM options in its model comparison.

These are tendencies, not guarantees. The capabilities, language support, customization, and operating characteristics of a particular service matter more than the label “NMT” or “LLM.” For example, Google Cloud documents its Translation LLM as a separate model option with its own customization capabilities. Check the documentation for the specific model and service you plan to deploy.

Which requests should go to each route?

Use the following as a starting hypothesis for evaluation, not as a universal classifier. Provider descriptions are model-specific, and the result can vary by language pair, domain, and request.

Decision factor NMT is a stronger candidate when… Consider an LLM when…
Latency and throughput The request has a strict response-time budget or high volume. Google describes NMT as its fastest option for real-time and latency-critical use, and Microsoft says NMT is generally faster. Google Cloud model comparison; Microsoft guidance. The request can tolerate more latency, and testing shows that the quality benefit justifies it. Google states that its Translation LLM has higher latency than NMT. Google Cloud evaluation guidance.
Context The text is short or segment-level context is sufficient. Google recommends considering NMT for short text. Google Cloud guidance. Document-level context or a more natural reformulation improves the result. Microsoft describes LLMs processing entire documents; Google recommends considering its Translation LLM for longer context. Microsoft guidance; Google Cloud guidance.
Terminology and consistency Glossaries, term bases, or consistent phrasing are central to the workflow. Microsoft says these can be easier to integrate with NMT, and Google identifies consistency and terminology management as cases where NMT may remain suitable. Verify behavior with your provider and language pair. Microsoft guidance; Google Cloud guidance. The selected LLM has been tested with the terminology controls your workflow requires and passes the same consistency checks. The cited guidance does not establish equivalent glossary support across all LLM providers.
Language pair and domain The NMT model is eligible for the pair and performs better on representative examples from your domain. The LLM supports the pair and shows a measured benefit on that pair and domain. Do not assume results from one language pair apply to others; Microsoft notes that specialized terminology and language variants can affect results. Microsoft guidance.
Reliability risk Omissions, additions, or inconsistent wording would be especially costly, and the translation-specific route meets your quality checks. You can check the output against the source, and an observed quality gain justifies the added generation risk. Microsoft warns that LLMs may introduce text absent from the source. Microsoft guidance.
Total cost The measured serving, review, and operational costs fit the workload. The measured quality benefit offsets additional serving, review, and operational costs. Microsoft recommends considering total cost of ownership, including operational and personnel costs; current prices depend on the service and were not established in the cited guidance. Microsoft guidance.

How do you build a per-request routing policy?

Start with a small, auditable policy. Add complexity only when measured results show that a more detailed route improves the outcome.

  1. Define request classes. Record only attributes needed for routing and evaluation: source and target language, domain, approximate text length, whether document context is available, latency budget, sensitivity, and terminology requirements.
  2. Check model eligibility. Confirm that each candidate supports the language pair and required features in the service version you will use. Support can differ by model; Google Cloud documents model-specific language support in its comparison.
  3. Build a representative baseline. Where feasible, run both routes on the same sample. Include the domains, lengths, and language pairs expected in production, and report results separately for each class so an aggregate score does not conceal a weak segment.
  4. Evaluate quality and risk. Google Cloud lists MetricX, COMET, and BLEU for translation evaluation, and describes judge-model checks for fluency, coherence, verbosity, and text quality. Also review meaning changes, omissions, additions, and terminology. Use human review for high-impact content. Google Cloud evaluation guidance.
  5. Measure production behavior. Test end-to-end latency and throughput under expected load, failure and retry rates, and total cost—including evaluation, post-editing, and operational effort. Do not use a latency or price ratio from another workload as your forecast.
  6. Route conservatively. Send a request class to the LLM route only when its tested benefit warrants the trade-off. Keep the routing rules inspectable, and define a fallback or review path for cases where translation errors matter.
  7. Monitor by route. Track quality and operational outcomes by model route, language pair, domain, and request class. Revisit the policy when traffic, terminology, models, or supported features change.

How should you handle context, terminology, and source fidelity?

Preserve the context the translation needs

For a document where meaning depends on information elsewhere in the text, test whether a document-context route improves the translation over segment-by-segment processing. If the source is short and self-contained, that extra context may not justify a slower route. Compare the output on the actual content rather than assuming longer context always helps.

Test terminology as a separate requirement

Create examples that include required terms, preferred translations, and phrases that must remain consistent across a document. Check whether each candidate honors those requirements, including when the term appears in different grammatical forms or surrounding contexts. A route that sounds fluent but changes a required term may be unsuitable for that request class.

Check for meaning changes and additions

For LLM output in particular, compare translated content with the source for unsupported additions, dropped information, and altered meaning. Microsoft specifically warns that LLMs can introduce text absent from the source; this is a reason to include source-fidelity checks, not a reason to assume every LLM translation will do so. Microsoft guidance.

When does a hybrid approach make sense?

A hybrid method can combine NMT and LLM strengths, but it should be evaluated like any other candidate route: on the same representative examples and operational measures. A paper in Findings of ACL 2025, “Combining the Best of Both Worlds: A Method for Hybrid NMT and LLM Translation,” reports that LLM translation can involve higher computational cost and latency and that, in most cases in its evaluation, translations were comparable to NMT. That result supports testing hybrid methods; it does not establish that a hybrid route is better for every provider, language pair, or production workload.
