If a SteamOS update leaves your Steam Deck unstable, use the built-in rollback before erasing anything. Shut the Deck down completely, hold the … button, press Power, and keep holding … until the SteamOS boot menu appears. Select Previous B, which Valve identifies as the second option from the top. This returns the system to its previous known-good SteamOS version while retaining user data such as installed games and saves.
The rollback slot is not a general version picker: it is the previous known-good installation, not an arbitrary older SteamOS release. If that path is unavailable or does not solve the problem, move to SteamOS recovery from a USB drive, choosing the least destructive recovery option that fits your situation.
Choose the least destructive recovery path
Your next step depends on four practical questions: can Steam still start, must local data be preserved, is an internet connection available, and do you have an external USB drive? The table below places each official option in that decision sequence.
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | Does Steam need to boot? | Effect on user data | Internet requirement | USB drive | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in rollback | No | Designed to retain user data | Not stated | Not needed | A recent update or current OS slot is causing the problem |
| Factory Reset | Yes | Clears local data | Reinstalling SteamOS may require an active connection | Not needed | You want a complete reset and Steam still opens |
| Repair SteamOS | No | Attempts to preserve games and personal content | Not stated | Required | Rollback is unavailable or ineffective, but preservation matters |
| Re-image Device | No | Wipes user information, installed games, applications, and operating systems | Not stated | Required | The system needs a full factory re-image |
Start with the built-in rollback whenever it is available. It is the narrowest intervention and is specifically intended to recover from a bad OS modification or corrupted current OS data without removing your personal content. A reset or re-image is a different class of operation: those choices deliberately remove data or reinstall the operating system.

Before starting the rollback
Connect power and stop normal shutdown attempts
Valve recommends performing the rollback while the Deck is connected to power. If the interface is frozen or an ordinary shutdown does not complete, use a full hardware power-off: hold the Power button for 10 seconds. Wait until the Deck is fully off before beginning the boot-menu sequence.
Understand what the rollback can and cannot select
The recovery menu exposes a previous known-good slot. It does not promise a list of every historical SteamOS build, so you cannot use this menu to choose any version you like. The available slot is the one Valve’s recovery design has marked as the prior working installation.
Protect anything that is not already synchronized
Valve describes rollback as retaining user data, including installed games and saves. That is the intended behavior, not a substitute for a separate backup of irreplaceable files. If you can still access important files before restarting, copy them to another location or confirm that your game saves are available through the synchronization method you normally use.
How to roll back SteamOS with “Previous B”
- Connect the Deck to power. This follows Valve’s recommendation for the recovery operation.
- Power the device fully off. Hold the Power button for 10 seconds if the Deck is stuck or will not shut down normally.
- Hold the … button. Keep it depressed before pressing Power.
- Press and release Power. Continue holding … while the Deck starts.
- Wait for the menu labeled “SteamOS.” Do not release the menu button too early; the objective is the SteamOS boot menu rather than a normal startup.
- Choose “Previous B.” Valve identifies this as the second option from the top. Select it with the Deck controls.
- Allow the selected installation to start. Do not interrupt the process by forcing another shutdown while the operating system is loading.
After startup, test the problem that appeared after the update: launch Steam, open a game that previously failed, and check the affected system function. The rollback returns the Deck to the prior known-good OS slot; it does not remove the update from a permanent version-history list or provide a manual release selector.
What “Previous B” means on a Steam Deck
“Previous B” is the label for the recovery entry that points to the prior known-good SteamOS installation. The letter and position are menu identifiers, not a promise that it is a particular public version number. Valve’s documentation describes a previous slot rather than a catalogue of releases, so the menu may not offer an older version beyond that slot.

This distinction matters when diagnosing expectations. If an update introduced a driver, desktop, input, or startup regression, the previous slot is the intended first test. If the underlying issue is unrelated to the current OS installation, selecting it may not change the behavior. In that case, proceed to the documented recovery environment instead of repeatedly cycling the same boot entry.
If Steam still boots: Factory Reset
Factory Reset is not a rollback. It clears local data and is appropriate only when you deliberately want to start over. Use it when Steam remains usable and a complete reset is preferable to preserving the current installation.
- Open Steam.
- Go to Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Factory Reset.
- Read the on-screen confirmation, then approve the reset only after moving any files you need to keep.
A reset removes local content, so installed games and locally stored saves should be treated as expendable unless you have another copy. Reinstalling SteamOS after the reset may require an active internet connection. If your goal is simply to undo the latest OS change while keeping your games, return to the built-in rollback procedure rather than selecting this menu item.
When the built-in rollback is unavailable or fails
Use Valve’s SteamOS recovery environment when the Previous B entry is missing, cannot start, or does not correct the fault. Recovery is launched from a USB key containing the SteamOS recovery image. It offers three broad classes of action: repairing the existing installation, re-imaging the Deck, and other recovery tools shown by Valve’s environment.
Prepare the recovery USB
Valve’s 2026 Steam Support guidance specifies an 8GB minimum USB key for the SteamOS recovery image. Use a larger drive if the image and your preparation workflow require it, but do not use a drive smaller than that minimum.

Writing the recovery image formats the USB drive. Copy anything important off the drive before writing the image, because the preparation process removes its existing contents. The USB key is recovery media, not a temporary container whose files will remain available afterward.

- Insert the prepared SteamOS recovery USB key into the Deck.
- Hold Volume Up and press Power.
- Release Volume Up after the chime.
- In Boot Manager, select EFI USB Device.
- Wait for the SteamOS recovery environment to load, then choose the operation that matches your data-preservation requirement.
If the Deck starts its installed system instead, shut it down and repeat the boot sequence. The important distinction is selecting the USB entry in Boot Manager, not merely connecting the drive while the normal OS starts.
Repair SteamOS: the preservation-first USB option
Repair SteamOS reinstalls SteamOS while attempting to preserve games and personal content. Choose it when the current installation is damaged or the built-in rollback cannot be used, but wiping the Deck is not acceptable.
“Attempts to preserve” is significant: the option is designed around retention, yet no repair operation should be treated as a guaranteed backup. If the system can still expose files you cannot replace, make a separate copy before launching recovery. Keep the Deck connected to power, select Repair SteamOS in the recovery environment, and follow the prompts until the reinstall completes.
After the repair, allow the Deck to boot normally and check the functions that failed. Confirm that your library and personal content are present before deleting the recovery media or assuming every application has returned to its former state.

Re-image Device: a complete wipe
Re-image Device is the destructive recovery choice. Valve describes it as a full factory reset that wipes user information, installed games, applications, and operating systems. Use it only when you have accepted that the Deck will be rebuilt from an empty state or when a full re-image is the appropriate remedy for the failure.
- Start the Deck from the recovery USB using the Volume Up, Power, and Boot Manager sequence.
- Select Re-image Device in the recovery environment.
- Confirm the warnings only after verifying that required files and saves exist elsewhere.
- Leave the Deck connected to power while the image is written and the system restarts.
- Complete the initial SteamOS setup and reinstall games and applications after the fresh installation starts.
Because this operation removes the existing operating systems as well as user content, it is not an alternative way to select an older SteamOS version. It creates a clean installation from the recovery image you prepared.

The Deck will not open the SteamOS menu
Verify the starting state rather than attempting the shortcut from a running desktop session. Hold Power for 10 seconds to force a complete shutdown, then hold … before pressing Power and keep holding it until the menu labeled SteamOS appears. Connecting power before repeating the sequence follows Valve’s recommendation.
There is no “Previous B” entry
The built-in path depends on a previous known-good slot being available. If the entry is not present, or selecting it simply returns you to the same failure, use the USB recovery environment. Do not substitute Factory Reset unless you intentionally want local data cleared.

The Deck cannot boot Steam at all
Because Factory Reset is reached through Steam’s Settings menu, it is not the appropriate first tool when Steam cannot start. Prepare the recovery USB and enter Boot Manager with Volume Up plus Power, then select EFI USB Device. From there, choose Repair SteamOS when preserving content is the priority, or Re-image Device when a full wipe is acceptable.

You do not have an 8GB USB key
Built-in rollback does not require external media, so try it first if the SteamOS menu is available. If USB recovery is required, obtain a key meeting Valve’s 8GB minimum and remember that writing the recovery image formats it. Do not use a drive containing the only copy of important files.
You need to keep installed games and saves
Use the built-in rollback as the first choice because Valve describes it as retaining user data. If that path cannot resolve the issue, Repair SteamOS is the USB option designed to attempt preservation. Avoid Factory Reset and Re-image Device when data retention is non-negotiable: both are defined as clearing or wiping local content.
You have an internet outage
The rollback procedure itself is performed from the Deck’s boot menu, and the recovery documentation does not state an internet requirement for that operation. Factory Reset may need an active connection to reinstall SteamOS. If you are deciding between paths during an outage, do not choose a reset on the assumption that the reinstall will complete offline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical order of operations
- Stabilize the hardware state: connect power and perform a complete shutdown if the Deck is frozen.
- Try Previous B: hold …, press Power, and select the second entry, Previous B, in the SteamOS menu.
- Check the result: test the specific behavior that changed after the update while leaving your data intact.
- If Steam still boots and you want a clean start: use Steam > Settings > System > Factory Reset, understanding that local data is cleared.
- If rollback is unavailable or ineffective: prepare an 8GB-or-larger recovery USB, boot EFI USB Device, and choose Repair SteamOS before considering a wipe.
- Use Re-image Device only with a wipe decision: it removes user information, games, applications, and operating systems.
This sequence keeps the least destructive option first and reserves the full re-image for cases where preserving the existing installation is no longer the objective.
