If Always On VPN (AOVPN) stopped connecting immediately after a Windows update, first record the update’s KB number and install date in Windows Update history. Then use Uninstall updates in Windows 11 or Windows 10, or use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) if Windows will not start. For an organization-managed device, check whether Microsoft has issued a Known Issue Rollback (KIR); it can reverse one faulty nonsecurity change without removing the entire update. Test the VPN after the change, investigate certificates and server policy in parallel, and reinstall a corrected security update as soon as Microsoft publishes one.
Confirm that the update is really related to the AOVPN failure
A VPN failure that appears after Patch Tuesday is not automatically caused by the patch. Always On VPN depends on the Windows client, certificates, authentication policy, Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS), DNS, firewall rules, deployment scripts and the network path. A certificate that expired on the same day, an NPS policy change or a damaged profile can look exactly like a bad update.
Establish a timing and configuration record before removing anything:

- Open Windows Update history and write down the KB number, update type and installation date for updates installed immediately before the first failed connection.
- Record whether the failure affects the device tunnel, the user tunnel or both. Note the tunnel type (for example, IKEv2 or another configured protocol), the Windows edition and the current OS build.
- Reproduce the failure once and capture the relevant RasClient events on the client. On the server side, collect NPS and RRAS events and confirm the certificate chain, subject names, expiration dates and revocation status.
- Compare a failing device with a device on the same VPN configuration that has not yet received the update. A consistent difference in KB level and behavior is stronger evidence than a single user’s report.
- Check the AOVPN profile and deployment script for a recent change. Microsoft identifies invalid certificates, incorrect NPS policies, deployment errors and RRAS problems as common AOVPN failure areas.
Keep this record even if uninstalling the update restores connectivity. It lets you prove which change was involved, prevents an update-management system from silently reinstalling the package and gives your administrator evidence for a vendor support case.

Pick the least disruptive recovery path
Use the option that matches the device’s state and the kind of update involved. Removing an entire update is broader than reversing one known faulty feature, while leaving a security update removed creates a protection gap.

If the suspected package is a security update and a KIR exists, prefer the KIR or Microsoft’s documented mitigation over removing the whole package. If no KIR exists and the update is the only plausible trigger, a temporary uninstall can be justified under your organization’s change-control process.
Uninstall the update in Windows 11
These labels apply to current Windows 11 releases; wording can vary slightly by build or management policy.
- Sign in with an account that can remove updates.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Update history, then choose Uninstall updates.
- Find the KB whose installation date matches the start of the AOVPN problem. Do not select an older package merely because its name looks similar.
- Select the update, choose Uninstall, and approve the prompts. Windows may ask for a restart.
- After the restart, test the affected device and user tunnels before allowing the endpoint to go back into normal use.
If the KB is not listed, it may be a package that Windows does not support removing, a cumulative component that has already been superseded, or an update installed through an organization’s servicing system. Do not delete files from the Windows component store to force removal; use the management system’s approved rollback process or WinRE instead.

Uninstall the update in Windows 10
- Sign in with administrative rights and open Start > Settings > Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update, then View update history.
- Choose Uninstall updates.
- Select the update installed immediately before the AOVPN failure, click Uninstall, and confirm.
- Restart when Windows requests it, then run the VPN and internal-resource tests described below.
Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be uninstalled. If the package is absent from this list, do not assume that a different KB caused the outage; return to the timing, build and event comparison and investigate the AOVPN dependencies.
Use Windows Recovery Environment when Windows will not boot
WinRE is the fallback when the running operating system cannot reach Settings or the VPN incident is accompanied by a startup failure.
Ways to enter WinRE
- From Windows, use the recovery restart option in Settings and choose the advanced startup path.
- Allow Automatic Repair to appear after repeated unsuccessful starts.
- Boot from Windows installation media and select the option to repair the computer rather than install Windows.
The exact entry screen can differ by device manufacturer and Windows build. If BitLocker or another device-encryption control is enabled, have the recovery key available; recovery tools may require it before changing the system volume.
Remove the latest quality update
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot.
- Open Advanced options.
- Choose Uninstall Updates.
- Select the offered option for the latest quality update and follow the confirmation prompts.
- Restart into Windows and verify the OS build and update history before testing AOVPN.
WinRE may not identify the KB by the same friendly name shown in Windows Update. The recovery action can remove the latest quality package as a whole, so use it only after you have recorded the installed updates and accepted the broader scope. If recovery reports that no update can be removed, stop retrying the same action and move to KIR, servicing-policy review or AOVPN dependency troubleshooting.

Check for a Microsoft Known Issue Rollback
A Known Issue Rollback is designed for a regression introduced by a nonsecurity change. Microsoft can disable the specific faulty code path while leaving the remainder of the update installed. This is materially different from uninstalling a cumulative update and returning every component to an earlier state.
For a personal or unmanaged PC
When Microsoft has assigned a KIR to the affected KB, the rollback is normally delivered through Windows’ servicing mechanisms. Keep the device connected to the internet, restart when prompted and allow time for policy and servicing changes to apply. A KIR is temporary: Microsoft can replace it with a permanent fix in a later update.
For an enterprise-managed device
- Open the affected KB’s Known Issues information in Microsoft’s Windows release-health documentation and confirm that the symptom and Windows build match your device.
- Obtain the policy definition Microsoft specifies for that KIR and import it into the organization’s Group Policy management system.
- Scope the policy to the affected Windows versions and test it on a small group before broad deployment.
- Restart affected computers. Microsoft states that an enterprise KIR policy requires a restart before the rollback takes effect.
- Confirm that the tunnel, authentication and internal name resolution work, then monitor for Microsoft’s permanent replacement.
Do not invent a KIR policy for a KB that Microsoft has not listed. KIR applies to a specific known issue; it is not a general-purpose switch for arbitrary VPN failures, and it does not replace certificate or NPS troubleshooting.
Verify AOVPN after the rollback
A successful reboot is not proof that the VPN is healthy. Test the complete path in a controlled order so that a partially working tunnel does not hide a remaining fault.

- Device tunnel: Restart before user sign-in, connect outside the corporate network and confirm that the device tunnel establishes if your design uses one.
- User tunnel: Sign in with a test account and confirm that the user tunnel connects under the same conditions that previously failed.
- Authentication: Verify certificate selection, certificate validity and chain trust on the client, then check matching NPS accept or reject events on the server.
- DNS: Resolve an internal name and confirm that the response comes from the expected corporate DNS path rather than a public resolver.
- Resource access: Reach an internal service that requires the VPN, such as a file share or management endpoint. A connected icon with no usable route is not a pass.
- Reconnect behavior: Test sleep and wake, network changes, sign-out and restart. A tunnel that connects once but fails to reconnect is still broken.
If all tests pass only after the update is removed, preserve the event logs, KB number, OS build and test results. If the failure remains, reinstalling or removing additional updates is unlikely to solve the actual cause; continue with the dependency checks below.

Certificates and trust
Check the client and server certificates used by the tunnel. Confirm that the certificate is within its validity period, has the required subject or alternative name, chains to a trusted authority, includes the intended enhanced-key-usage value and has not been revoked. A certificate-enrollment failure can begin at the same time as an update without being caused by it.
NPS policy and authentication
Review Network Policy Server conditions, constraints and certificate requirements. Compare a rejected request with a successful request from a known-good device. An NPS rule that was reordered, disabled or narrowed can reject otherwise healthy tunnels.

Inspect RRAS service health, listener configuration and server-side events. Confirm that the VPN endpoint is reachable from the affected network and that perimeter firewalls allow the protocol and ports used by your deployment. Check for a DNS record or address change that affects only off-network clients.

Profile deployment and scripts
Compare the deployed AOVPN XML or management-profile version with a working endpoint. Look for a malformed profile, a changed authentication method, a script that ran only partially or a policy that removed the profile during reboot. Reapply the approved profile rather than hand-editing a production device without documentation.
Client-side event evidence
Use RasClient events to identify whether the failure occurs during negotiation, certificate validation, authentication or route setup. Correlate the timestamp with NPS and RRAS logs; a client error by itself often describes the symptom rather than the cause.
Security and change-management consequences
Removing a security update reduces the device’s protection against the vulnerabilities that update addressed. Treat an uninstall as a controlled, temporary exception:

- Record the device, user, KB, Windows build, approval and removal time.
- Limit the exception to systems that need it, and keep endpoint protection, firewall controls and least-privilege access enabled.
- Prevent automatic redeployment only through your organization’s approved update-management process; do not disable Windows Update globally.
- Monitor Microsoft’s release-health information for a corrected package or a KIR change.
- Reinstall the corrected security update as soon as it is available, then repeat the full device-tunnel, user-tunnel, DNS, authentication and resource-access tests.
If the removed package was nonsecurity, the protection impact may be smaller, but the same documentation and redeployment discipline prevents an unmanaged configuration drift.
Use the January 2022 IKEv2 report only as historical context
A January 2022 Microsoft Q&A report describes a user restoring IKEv2 connectivity after uninstalling KB5009543. It demonstrates that an update can coincide with an IKEv2 regression, but it does not establish that KB5009543—or any other particular KB—is responsible for a current AOVPN incident. Windows builds, VPN profiles and server configurations change. Identify the KB and build in your own Update history before taking action.
When to stop rolling back and escalate
- The suspected KB is not listed as installed, or the failure predates its installation.
- Multiple devices on different patch levels fail in the same way, indicating a shared certificate, NPS, RRAS, DNS or firewall problem.
- WinRE cannot remove the quality update and Microsoft has not published a KIR.
- The update is security-critical and the organization cannot accept an unpatched endpoint.
- Uninstalling restores the tunnel only briefly, or the issue returns after policy refresh.
At that point, provide your administrator or support team with the KB and build, installation and failure times, RasClient/NPS/RRAS evidence, certificate details, tunnel type, profile version and the exact tests that passed or failed. That information supports a targeted fix instead of another blind rollback.
