Microsoft supports rolling Edge back to an earlier build mainly as a temporary enterprise troubleshooting measure. You can deploy a specific older MSI package with the ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1 switch, or use Edge Update policy on Windows devices joined to a Microsoft Active Directory domain. The policy method works only when the target version is a real, correctly formatted build, rollback is enabled, and the update policy remains in an update-allowed state.
Turn on Edge Sync before changing versions, record the current build, and plan to return to a current supported release. Older builds can lack security fixes, and Microsoft recommends the latest Edge version for protection against known threats.
What an Edge rollback does—and when to use it
A rollback replaces the installed Microsoft Edge browser with an earlier build. It is not a normal “undo update” button in Edge settings. Microsoft documents rollback for enterprise troubleshooting, such as isolating a regression after an update or restoring compatibility with a managed application while a permanent fix is prepared.
Rollback should be temporary. Microsoft’s guidance recommends installing the latest Edge release to receive current security updates. An older build may contain vulnerabilities that have already been fixed in newer versions, so define the incident you are investigating, set an owner and end date, and schedule the return to a supported build.

Check your starting point
Open Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge and record the complete version number before changing anything. The policy method only downgrades when the installed version is higher than the target. If the installed build is already equal to or below the target, no downgrade occurs.
Protect browsing data first
Enable Edge Sync and allow it to finish before uninstalling, replacing or downgrading the browser. Microsoft warns that unsynchronized browsing data could be permanently lost during a version change. Sync is a safeguard, not a substitute for an organization’s normal backup and retention process.
Confirm that the target build exists
Choose an exact Edge build that Microsoft still provides through its enterprise download source. A target such as 83.0.499.12 has four numeric components. A typo, an incomplete value, a malformed value or a build that no longer exists prevents a policy rollback.

Choose between MSI deployment and Group Policy
The two supported approaches solve different operational problems. Use an MSI when you need a controlled one-off deployment on a particular device. Use Edge Update policy when several domain-managed Windows devices must converge on the same target and remain governed by central settings.

Both methods require a recovery plan. Do not leave a production fleet on the older build after the compatibility incident is resolved.

Method 1: Roll back with an Edge MSI installer
An MSI deployment is the most direct route when you have a specific package and do not need a domain-wide policy to keep devices at that version. Obtain the exact older package from Microsoft’s enterprise Edge download source and verify that its version is lower than the build currently installed.
Step 1: Prepare the device and package
- Open Edge and go to Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Record the installed version.
- Turn on Sync and wait for the device to complete synchronization. If the device is managed, follow the organization’s data-protection procedure as well.
- Confirm that the MSI package is an existing Microsoft Edge build and that its four-part version is lower than the installed version. Keep the file name and location unchanged while you deploy it.
- Close Edge windows before installation. Ask users to save work in web applications because closing the browser ends their current sessions.
Step 2: Run the documented downgrade command
Microsoft’s MSI example is:
msiexec /I FileName.msi /qn ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1
Replace FileName.msi with the actual package filename, including its path if the file is not in the current command directory. The ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1 property is essential: without it, Windows Installer is not being told to permit replacement by an older Edge build. Use the permissions and software-deployment controls required by your organization.

- Wait for the installer to finish, then open Edge again.
- Go to Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Confirm that the displayed version exactly matches the MSI package you intended to deploy.
- Recheck Sync and the application or workflow that prompted the rollback. A successful installation does not by itself prove that the compatibility problem is fixed.
If the About page still shows the original build, close every Edge process, confirm that the MSI is the intended version, and review the deployment result before running the package again. Do not repeatedly install arbitrary older files; an unsupported or nonexistent package cannot produce a reliable rollback.
Method 2: Roll back with Edge Update policy
The policy route is designed for centrally managed Windows devices. Microsoft documents it for Edge version 86 or later on devices joined to a Microsoft Active Directory domain. It depends on three settings working together: a rollback switch, an exact target version and an update policy that still permits updates.
Step 1: Open the Edge policy location
- On the managed Windows device or administrative workstation, open Local Group Policy Editor when configuring a local test device, or edit the applicable domain policy for a managed fleet.
- Browse to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge Update > Applications > Microsoft Edge.
Step 2: Enable rollback and set the exact target
- Open Rollback to target version and set it to Enabled.
- In the same policy, set Target version override to the complete existing Edge build you selected, for example
83.0.499.12. Do not enter a channel name, a partial version or a version that Microsoft does not provide. - Open Update policy override and enable it with one of the update-allowed choices: Always allow updates, Automatic silent updates only or Manual updates only.
The policy reference makes the dependency explicit: RollbackToTargetVersion does nothing unless Target version override is set and Update policy override is in an ON state. Choosing Updates disabled prevents the rollback because Edge Update is not allowed to perform the required update operation.

Step 3: Refresh policy
On a test or directly managed device, open an administrative command prompt and run:
gpupdate /force
This requests an immediate Group Policy refresh, but it does not guarantee that Edge Update will perform the downgrade at that instant. Edge Update checks for updates every 10 hours by default. Administrators can adjust the polling interval or use MSI deployment when the incident requires a faster, package-driven change.
Step 4: Let Edge Update apply the rollback
After policy refresh and the next Edge Update check, close and reopen Edge. The rollback happens only if the current version is higher than the target and all policy values are valid. On a fleet, allow time for Group Policy synchronization and remote policy refresh; devices that are offline or have not received the changed policy will not change at the same time.
Step 5: Verify the installed build
In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge and compare the displayed four-part version with the target entered in policy. Test the affected site, extension or line-of-business application, and record which devices changed. Verification should use the browser’s displayed build rather than assuming that a policy refresh completed the installation.
Why an Edge rollback policy may not work
When a device remains on its current release, check the conditions below in order. Each one can independently stop a policy rollback.

The target is invalid or unavailable
Rollback requires a supported, existing Edge version in the exact expected format. Values that are misspelled, incomplete, incorrectly formatted or no longer available from Microsoft prevent the operation. Compare the policy value character by character with the build listed in Microsoft’s enterprise download source.
The target is not lower than the installed version
Edge does not downgrade when the current build is equal to or lower than the target. Recheck the version shown on the About page and make sure you are comparing all four components, not only the major number.
Rollback is enabled but updates are disabled
RollbackToTargetVersion relies on Edge Update. If Update policy override is set to Updates disabled, the updater cannot carry out the operation. Select one of the documented update-allowed states instead.
The device is outside the documented policy scope
The policy applies to Edge version 86 or later on Windows devices joined to a Microsoft Active Directory domain. A standalone computer, an unmanaged device or an unsupported Edge version may not respond to this policy route. For a controlled individual deployment, use the MSI method instead.
The policy has not reached the device yet
A successful edit in Group Policy Editor is not proof that every endpoint has received it. Run gpupdate /force where appropriate, allow the normal Edge Update check, and account for devices that are asleep, offline or connected through a network that delays policy synchronization. If only part of the population changes, compare each device’s received policy and Edge version rather than changing the target repeatedly.

Edge was not restarted
Close and reopen Edge after installation or after the updater reports a change. Then verify the version from the About page. A browser window that remained open during the operation can make the result appear unchanged until it is restarted.

Keep the rollback narrow
Use the smallest device group that can reproduce the problem. A domain policy can affect every applicable computer, while an MSI can be directed at a specific device or deployment ring. Record the target version, affected application, start time and owner so the temporary exception can be reversed.
Expect security trade-offs
Microsoft recommends the latest Edge release for the latest security updates. Treat the older build as an incident workaround, not as a permanently preferred version. Limit exposure to the systems that need it, monitor the affected workflow and schedule a return to a supported current build.

Sync reduces the risk of losing unsynchronized browsing data, but it does not replace organizational backups, retention rules or application-specific export procedures. Confirm that users can access the data and credentials they need before closing Edge.
How to return to the current Edge release
Once the compatibility issue is fixed or a vendor-supported update is available, remove the temporary controls that held the older build.
- For a policy deployment, disable Rollback to target version and clear the temporary Target version override.
- Set Update policy override to the organization’s normal update-allowed configuration rather than leaving updates disabled.
- Refresh Group Policy with
gpupdate /forcewhere appropriate, then allow Edge Update to check or use the organization’s normal current-version deployment process. - Restart Edge and verify the resulting version at Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Retest the application that caused the rollback and document when the exception ended.
For an MSI-managed device, deploy the current official Edge package through the organization’s normal software process after removing any temporary package hold. Verify the current build in the About page rather than relying only on the installer’s completion message.
Recovering from a damaged installation or update
If Edge will not install, update or start normally, a rollback may be treating the symptom rather than the installation problem. Microsoft Support recommends using the official Edge download page and the current official package for recovery.
- Close Edge and preserve any information required by your organization’s backup or Sync process.
- Remove previous installation files or the Edge update cache when those remnants are preventing a clean installation.
- Uninstall Edge if the installation is damaged and your organization permits removal.
- Download and install Edge again from Microsoft’s official source, using the current package rather than an unverified older file.
- Restart Edge, open the About page, and confirm that the current build is installed and updating normally.
Do not use a malformed target version as a repair technique. If the goal is to restore a working, supported browser, a clean installation of the current official package is the documented recovery direction.
