If your organization manages Chrome on Windows, use Google’s update policy to roll back to one of the three latest major releases. For an earlier version, Google documents a separate Enterprise MSI procedure for eligible Workspace and Chrome Browser Enterprise Support customers. Both approaches carry data or security risks; Google does not document either as a universal downgrade method for unmanaged personal installations.
First decide whether your Chrome installation is managed
These procedures are for organization-managed Chrome deployments. Google’s manual downgrade instructions are intended for Google Workspace and Chrome Browser Enterprise Support customers. They should not be treated as a guaranteed method for a personal, unmanaged installation.
Before changing versions, record the Chrome version and the specific site, extension, or workflow that fails. If an extension is responsible, blocking that extension with policy may resolve the issue without rolling back the browser. Google recommends testing a downgrade with a small group and confirming that it fixes the problem before broad deployment. Google’s update-management guidance also recommends using the latest version for security updates.

Roll back to one of the three latest major releases with policy
For managed Windows devices where the target is within the three latest major Chrome releases, Google documents a Google Update policy route. In Group Policy, enable Rollback to Target version, then set Target version prefix override to the desired major version. Apply the policy through your organization’s normal management process. Google cautions that user data may depend on retained snapshots and whether Chrome Sync or roaming profiles are configured. Plan for recovery before applying the rollback; Sync is recommended for users, but it should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every locally stored item will be preserved.
Use the Enterprise MSI for an earlier version
Google’s manual procedure uses the Chrome Enterprise MSI and the ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1 argument. It is not a routine consumer installation recipe. Follow Google’s manual downgrade instructions and verify that your organization and installation are eligible before proceeding.

Prepare and test
- Back up or otherwise account for user data: Google says a manual downgrade automatically deletes user profiles and cache data.
- Review custom
UserDataDirandDiskCacheDirsettings. Google says not to set these paths to a volume root or use those locations for non-Chrome data. - Temporarily halt automatic updates as directed by Google’s instructions.
- Test with a small group and verify that the target version actually resolves the compatibility problem.
Run the documented installer command
Open an elevated Command Prompt in the location containing the Enterprise MSI. Google documents two commands, depending on the installation you intend to restore:
- To return to the version last manually installed with an MSI, run
msiexec /fvomus GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise.msi ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1. - For the installer’s specified version, run
msiexec /i GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise.msi ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1.
Use the exact MSI filename for the file you have. After installation, relaunch Chrome and check its version. Have users relaunch the browser as well. Google notes that users may see a profile-version warning and may need to create a new browser profile. Re-enable automatic updates after the compatibility issue is resolved.

Why a downgrade should be temporary
Google warns that running earlier Chrome versions exposes users to known security issues. Treat rollback as a short-term troubleshooting measure: identify and fix the underlying compatibility problem, then restore normal updates promptly. Google also labels its rollback policy use as “at your own risk.”

Google’s enterprise instructions do not establish a supported, universal downgrade procedure for unmanaged consumer installations. The Chromium administrator FAQ describes previous-version installation as unsupported; its discussion of uninstalling, removing profile data, and reinstalling an older build should be read as a warning about risks, not as a recommended consumer workflow. Consult Google’s current consumer support resources before changing installation state, and first check whether the problem is limited to a particular site or extension.
