For a shared or published branch, preserve the current tip and use git revert; it adds inverse commits without erasing the original history. Use git reset only for local, unshared cleanup, and create a recovery pointer before moving the branch. In both cases, freeze evidence first: commit IDs, branch and remote details, agent transcript, diffs, tests, dependency changes, and review records.

The workflow below shows how to roll back safely, recover from a reset or rebase, locate the first bad commit, and produce an audit trail that another engineer can verify.

The decision in one minute

Choose the operation based on whether other people or systems already consume the branch:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation Preferred operation What happens to history Recovery and review characteristics
Shared branch, open pull request, or published release branch git revert New commit(s) apply the inverse of the selected changes; original commits remain visible Easy to review and publish; the rollback itself has a normal diff and status
Private local branch whose history has not been shared git reset, after making a backup pointer The branch name moves to another commit; the previous tip is no longer on that branch Convenient for cleanup, but the old tip must be recovered through the backup branch or reflog
Unclear cause or several suspect commits Preserve first, then use git bisect No rollback is implied by bisect; it identifies the first revision that fails a reproducible check Produces a defensible explanation of where the defect entered

Do not start by deleting the branch, force-pushing, or running a destructive reset. Capture evidence and create a safety pointer while the current commit is still easy to name.

Freeze the state before changing anything

Large generated changes can span application code, generated files, lockfiles, configuration, and tests. A rollback that removes code but loses the evidence of how it arrived is difficult to audit. Treat the current checkout as an incident snapshot.

  1. Record repository identity. Write down the branch name, remote URL, pull-request number if one exists, merge method, current HEAD object ID, and the output of git status --short --branch.
  2. Save the agent record. Preserve the prompt or task description, agent transcript, tool-call log, generated patch, and any model or agent-run identifier available in your process. If no transcript exists, record that absence rather than reconstructing one from memory.
  3. Capture verification evidence. Save CI result links or artifacts, local test and lint commands, build output, security checks, and the exact environment used. Include the dependency lockfile diff and the list of generated files.
  4. Preserve human review. Export reviewer comments, approval state, requested changes, and the pull-request discussion. Note which checks were required and which were skipped.
  5. Make the snapshot reproducible. Save a patch and summary while the checkout is unchanged: git diff > ai-change-working-tree.patch for uncommitted work, plus git diff --stat and git log --oneline --decorate for committed work. Store the outputs with the incident record.

Run these commands before rollback when the working tree may contain useful, uncommitted material:

git status --short --branch
git remote -v
git rev-parse HEAD
git log --oneline --decorate --graph -n 30
git diff --stat
git diff --name-only

The commands do not prove that the generated code is correct. They establish exactly what was present before you changed it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create a safety pointer

Before rewriting history or staging an inverse, create a branch or tag at the current tip. A branch is convenient for ongoing comparison; a tag is useful when your retention policy treats the snapshot as an immutable milestone.

git branch backup/ai-change HEAD

Use a descriptive name that includes the incident or pull-request identifier when your naming policy allows it. Verify the pointer:

git show --no-patch --decorate backup/ai-change
git rev-parse backup/ai-change

Do not remove this pointer until the project’s retention period has elapsed and reviewers agree that the original commits, patch, and audit record are preserved elsewhere.

Choose between revert and reset

Why revert is the default for shared history

The Git project’s git-revert manual defines the operation this way:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Given one or more commits, revert the changes that the related patches introduce, and record some new commits that record them.”

That behavior matters when a branch is already visible to collaborators, CI, deployment automation, or release tooling. The original AI-generated commits remain available for inspection, while the inverse is an ordinary change that can be reviewed, tested, and merged.

When reset is appropriate

git reset moves a branch pointer. It is primarily a local-history operation when no one else depends on the branch name or its current tip. A reset can make the prior tip harder to find unless you first create a backup pointer; the reflog may still provide a route back, but it should not be your only safety measure.

Comparison by operational concern

Concern git revert git reset
Shared history Suitable; collaborators retain the same ancestry Risky; requires coordinated force-updating and can invalidate others’ work
Original commits visible Yes, including their authors, timestamps, parents, and diffs Not on the moved branch; preserve them with a branch, tag, or reflog
Review shape Can be one staged inverse commit or several individual reverts Changes the branch position rather than creating a rollback commit
Recoverability Original history remains directly reachable Depends on the backup pointer and reflog before garbage collection or cleanup
Conflict risk Possible when later commits overlap the selected changes Usually no merge conflict during the pointer move, but later collaboration and force-pushes can create serious coordination problems
Provenance evidence Strong: the reason, range, tests, and inverse diff can be reviewed together Requires extra records because the branch name no longer shows the previous tip

Roll back a large change on a shared branch

1. Identify the exact commit range

Use immutable object IDs, not only abbreviated subjects. Confirm the oldest and newest commits that belong to the AI-generated change and inspect their parents:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
git show --no-patch --format=fuller <oldest>
git show --no-patch --format=fuller <newest>
git log --oneline --decorate <oldest>^..<newest>

If unrelated human commits are interleaved, do not revert a broad range merely because it is convenient. Separate the ranges or revert individual commits after reviewing their dependencies.

2. Stage one inverse for inspection

For a contiguous range, stage the inverse without committing it:

git revert --no-commit <oldest>^..<newest>

The --no-commit option lets you inspect and test the complete rollback as one working-tree change. It does not erase the original commits.

3. Inspect what the inverse actually changes

git status --short
git diff --stat
git diff --name-status
git diff --check

Pay particular attention to lockfiles, database migrations, generated artifacts, configuration defaults, and files touched by later commits. A large inverse can expose conflicts or remove a file that a subsequent change now requires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Resolve conflicts deliberately

If Git stops during the revert, read the conflict markers and use the surrounding commits to determine the intended state. Do not blindly choose “ours” or “theirs”: the correct result is the state that removes the AI-generated behavior while preserving independent work made afterward. After editing each file, mark it resolved with git add, then continue the operation with git revert --continue. If the selected range is wrong, use git revert --abort to return to the pre-revert state and reassess the commit boundaries.

5. Run the project’s normal checks

Use the same test, lint, build, and security commands that were required for the original change. Compare the results with the saved CI evidence. A green rollback build proves only that the post-rollback tree passes those checks; it does not prove that the original generated code was safe in every environment.

6. Commit with an explanatory message

When the staged inverse is correct, commit it with the affected range and reason:

git commit -m "Revert AI-generated change <oldest>..<newest>: restore known-good behavior"

Record the new commit ID, the tests run, and any files intentionally left unchanged. Push through the normal review path rather than force-pushing a shared branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clean up an unshared local branch with reset

Reset is useful when an agent experimented on a private branch and no pull request, deployment, or collaborator relies on its current tip. Preserve the tip first:

git branch backup/ai-change HEAD

Then move the working branch to the known-good revision:

git reset --hard <known-good>

--hard also discards tracked working-tree and index changes. Use it only after saving any needed patch and confirming that the backup branch points to the old tip. If you need to keep uncommitted work, choose a non-destructive reset mode or stash/export the work before moving the pointer. Verify the result with git status, git rev-parse HEAD, and a comparison against backup/ai-change.

Do not use a local reset as a substitute for a public rollback. If the branch has been pushed or consumed by another person, create a revert commit and communicate the affected range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recover after an agent reset or rebase

The reflog records recent movements of references. The HEAD reflog also records branch switching, which makes it useful after an agent rebases, resets, checks out another branch, or performs a sequence of commands that obscures the prior tip.

Locate the prior position

git reflog --date=local
git reflog show --all --date=local

Look for entries immediately before the reset or rebase and identify the full object ID. Inspect candidates before restoring anything:

git show --stat <candidate>
git log --oneline --decorate --graph <candidate> -n 30

Protect the candidate before further edits

git branch recovery/ai-before-rewrite <candidate>

Now the suspected old history has a stable name. Compare it with the current branch and with the known-good revision:

git diff --stat recovery/ai-before-rewrite..HEAD
git diff recovery/ai-before-rewrite..HEAD

Decide whether to restore, cherry-pick, or revert

  • Restore the branch pointer when the rewrite was accidental and the old tip is the intended continuation. Coordinate first if the branch is shared.
  • Cherry-pick selected commits when only specific work from the recovered history is needed on the current base.
  • Revert when the unwanted commits are already part of shared history and must be canceled without rewriting it.

Keep the recovery branch until reviewers have checked the comparison and the retention requirement is satisfied.

Find the first bad commit with git bisect

Rollback answers “how do we remove this change?” Bisect answers “which commit first introduced the failure?” You need a reproducible check: a test command, linter, build, security assertion, or other deterministic pass/fail criterion.

The Git project’s git-bisect manual states: “This command uses a binary search algorithm to find the commit that introduced a bug.” Binary search is useful when a large AI-generated range contains many commits and the failure is not obvious from the diff.

Prepare a good and bad boundary

  1. Choose a known-bad revision where the check fails.
  2. Choose a known-good revision where the same check passes.
  3. Write down the exact command, required fixtures, environment variables, and any revisions that cannot be tested.

Run the search

git bisect start
git bisect bad <known-bad>
git bisect good <known-good>

Git checks out a midpoint. Run the same reproducible check at that revision and mark it:

git bisect good
git bisect bad

Repeat until Git identifies the first offending commit. Record the bisect log and any skipped revisions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
git bisect log > bisect-log.txt
git bisect reset

A skipped revision is not neutral evidence: document why it could not be tested and how that uncertainty affects the conclusion. After git bisect reset, return to the branch or commit you were using before the search.

Build an audit record for every AI-generated commit

An audit should let an independent reviewer answer four questions: exactly what changed, who or what produced it, which checks ran, and how the rollback decision was made.

Evidence category Minimum record Why it matters
Identity Full commit object ID, subject, author, committer, timestamps, parent IDs, branch, remote, and pull-request number Prevents ambiguity when branches are rebased or similarly named commits exist
Content Complete diff, diffstat, changed-file list, generated-file list, and dependency or lockfile changes Shows the exact scope, including files that reviewers may not open in the application diff
AI provenance Agent or model identifier, prompt or task, transcript, tool or run identifier, and attribution metadata when available Connects repository objects to the generation event without guessing after the fact
Review Reviewer identities, comments, approvals, requested changes, pull-request links, and merge method Separates automated generation from human review decisions
Verification Test, lint, build, and security commands; versions and environment; CI logs or artifact links; pass, fail, and skipped status Makes claims about validation reproducible and properly qualified
Rollback Backup pointer, selected range, command used, conflict resolutions, rollback commit ID, reason, and post-rollback checks Explains both the decision and the resulting repository state

GitHub’s commits documentation describes commits as records of file changes that track authorship and history. Use those fields as the immutable backbone of the audit, then attach the AI run and review records around them. If your organization uses AI attribution metadata, retain it with the commit or review record. The Git AI standard also addresses how attribution moves for files affected by a reset, so document that movement rather than silently losing it.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Check signatures and merge semantics

Record whether each relevant commit, tag, and merge commit is verified. Verification establishes that a signature matches the claimed signing identity; it does not establish that the code is correct, secure, or free of generated defects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the merge method as a separate field. GitHub documents that rebase-and-merge adds the head-branch commits to the base branch without commit-signature verification. Consequently, a green “verified” label or a successful merge status must not be presented as proof of functional correctness or complete provenance.

For a merge commit, preserve its parents and the exact method used to create it. When a rollback targets a merge, identify which parent represents the mainline before attempting the inverse, and have a reviewer confirm the resulting diff. Do not omit merge metadata simply because the final rollback is a single commit.

Publish the rollback as a reviewable change

  1. Open a pull request for the rollback. Include the affected commit range, the reason for removal, and a link to the original AI-generated change.
  2. Attach evidence. Add the backup pointer, diff summary, conflict notes, test and CI results, dependency review, and any bisect log.
  3. State the recovery plan. Explain whether the original commits remain reachable, where the recovery branch or tag is stored, and how to restore selected work if the rollback proves too broad.
  4. Request focused review. Ask reviewers to inspect behavior restored by the inverse, files that changed after the AI range, generated artifacts, lockfiles, and migrations.
  5. Merge normally. Use the repository’s ordinary protections and retain the original commits for the project’s required retention period.

A rollback pull request should be understandable without opening the agent transcript. The transcript supplies provenance; the pull request supplies the human-readable decision and verification record.

Failure modes and recovery actions

The revert includes unrelated work

Abort the staged operation, narrow the commit range, and identify interleaved commits with git log --ancestry-path and file-level diffs. Reverting unrelated work creates a second incident and makes later recovery harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The revert conflicts with later edits

Stop, inspect each conflict in the context of the later change, and preserve intentional post-AI behavior. Mark only reviewed resolutions, run the full checks, and document why the final file differs from a mechanical inverse.

The agent force-pushed or rebased a shared branch

Use reflog entries, remote references, pull-request metadata, and the backup pointer to identify the old tip. Create a recovery branch before attempting restoration. Do not force-push again until the team agrees which ancestry is authoritative.

The working tree contains uncommitted generated files

Export a patch and copy important untracked files before reset or cleanup. A commit-based audit cannot recover an untracked file that was never saved elsewhere.

Tests are nondeterministic

Do not mark a bisect revision good or bad based on one flaky run. Record repetitions, quarantine known flakes, or choose a more deterministic assertion. The bisect result is only as reliable as the pass/fail check.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The rollback passes CI but behavior is still wrong

Separate build health from functional correctness. Add a regression test or security assertion that expresses the failure, then rerun it against the rollback and the known-good revision. If the original generated change altered data or external state, inspect those effects separately from the Git diff.

A compact runbook

  1. Freeze branch, remote, pull request, merge method, HEAD, status, transcript, patch, CI, dependencies, and reviews.
  2. Create backup/ai-change or an equivalent tag at the current tip.
  3. Classify the branch as shared or private.
  4. For shared history, stage git revert --no-commit <oldest>^..<newest>; for private history, reset only after protecting the old tip.
  5. Inspect the complete diff, resolve conflicts deliberately, and run normal checks.
  6. Use reflog and a recovery branch if an agent rewrote local history.
  7. Use bisect when a reproducible check can distinguish known-good from known-bad revisions.
  8. Record immutable Git metadata, AI attribution or run records, review evidence, signatures, merge semantics, and verification outputs.
  9. Publish the rollback through a reviewable pull request and retain the original objects for the required period.

What this process can and cannot prove

It can prove which Git objects were present, how the branch moved, what inverse was applied, which checks were run, and what provenance records were retained. It cannot turn a signature into a correctness guarantee, infer an absent agent transcript, or establish a universal defect rate for AI-generated code. No authoritative statistic establishes a general rollback-success or defect rate for large AI-generated Git changes, so avoid presenting one.

The practical standard is traceability: preserve the original objects, make the rollback itself reviewable, use a reproducible check to locate defects, and keep enough metadata for another engineer to reproduce your conclusion.
