Motorola says you can’t downgrade to a previous software version after installing an update. Its official Software Fix/Rescue process is not a rollback: it installs the current software available for your phone’s model and carrier, and erases personal data. If the update caused trouble, start with checks that don’t wipe the phone; consider Rescue only as a current-software repair step.
Can you roll back a Motorola Android update?
Motorola’s US support guidance states: “You can’t downgrade to a previous software version after installing an update.” Motorola’s update guidance does not offer a consumer-supported way to select and reinstall an older Android version.
A factory reset does not undo an Android update. It removes personal data and settings but does not restore the previous operating system. Likewise, Motorola’s Rescue option reinstalls current software rather than an older release.

What Motorola Rescue does—and does not do
Motorola describes its Rescue software update as a way to address software-related problems by installing the current software available for the specific phone model and carrier. The update resets the phone and removes personal data. It is not a version selector or downgrade tool. See Motorola’s explanation of carrier OTA and Rescue updates.

What to try before considering Rescue
Record the phone’s software details
Write down the exact model number, Android version, software build if shown, the date the update installed, and the symptoms. Motorola’s update guidance gives this path for checking Android version: Settings > About phone > Device details > Android version. Menu names can vary by model and software version.
Check for another official update
Open the phone’s System updates settings and check whether an update is available. Availability and timing vary by device and distribution path; Motorola says model, region, carrier, certification, and partner processes can affect updates. A newer update may be available, but that does not guarantee it will resolve the issue. Consult Motorola’s software update instructions for the relevant device guidance.

Back up before a reset or Rescue
Motorola’s reset guidance advises backing up and having account and security information available. Before a Rescue operation, save anything you need and make sure you know the Google account previously used on the phone, along with screen-lock details needed during setup. After Rescue, if a Google account was on the device beforehand, Motorola says the same account must be used during setup.
How to run Motorola Rescue if software problems persist
Rescue is a full update to current software, not a downgrade. Use it only if you accept that it resets the phone and removes personal data. Motorola’s instructions call for a Windows PC, internet access, and a USB cable.

- Prepare the phone: Back up personal data, confirm you have the Google account credentials and screen-lock information needed for setup, and record the exact model and software details.
- Use Motorola Software Fix: Follow the official Rescue instructions on a Windows PC with an internet connection and USB cable.
- Check the matched device: Software Fix uses the phone’s IMEI to match firmware. Confirm the displayed model is correct before continuing.
- Allow the update to complete: The Rescue process resets the phone and removes downloaded apps, photos, text messages, and other personal data. Set up the phone afterward with the Google account that was on it before Rescue, if applicable.
Motorola’s Software Fix feature summary describes the tool’s purpose and supported workflow. Its software matches the specific phone and carrier; it does not provide a choice of an older Android release.

Contact Motorola or the carrier if you need model-specific advice, the update appears to have failed, or you are unsure whether the phone has an update available. Provide the model number and software build, the update date, and a concise description of the problem. Motorola’s consumer guidance establishes its stated no-downgrade position and Rescue behavior, but does not establish a universal safe procedure for every model, carrier variant, bootloader state, or manually flashed build. Avoid treating unofficial firmware instructions as generally safe or Motorola-supported.
