If a graphics-driver update caused flickering, a distorted image, a missing external monitor, or another display problem, Windows can usually return to the previously installed driver. The supported path is Device Manager: expand Display adapters, open the affected adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver. You need administrator permissions, and the button works only when Windows still has an earlier driver available.
The procedure applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, but the Device Manager steps remain the documented method for that edition. This guide also explains what to do when Roll Back Driver is unavailable, how to tell a driver fault from an incompatible app, and when a reinstall or System Restore is more appropriate.
Choose the right recovery action first
A graphics-driver rollback changes only the display driver. It does not return Windows itself to an earlier release. Use the following decision guide before changing anything:

Before rolling back the graphics driver
Confirm that the timing points to the driver
Note when the display problem started and what changed immediately beforehand. A failure that appears right after Windows Update or a graphics-driver installation is a strong reason to try the driver rollback path. If the symptom existed before the update, rollback may not address its cause.

Make sure you can approve the change
Microsoft requires administrator permissions to roll back a driver. Sign in with an administrator account or have an administrator enter credentials when Windows requests them. Save open work first because Windows may require a restart.
Identify the affected adapter
Many laptops and desktop systems list more than one display adapter, such as integrated and separately installed graphics. If several entries appear, use the adapter whose driver was updated or whose symptoms match the failure. Do not remove or roll back a different adapter simply because it is listed first.
Prepare for a difficult-to-use screen
If the display is too unstable to navigate, Windows troubleshooting may need to be performed in Safe Mode. Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers and services, which can make Device Manager usable long enough to repair the display driver.

This repair uses tools already included with Windows. You do not need to buy a replacement graphics card, a special driver-installation USB drive, or a paid driver-updater utility to try the supported rollback. If a new package is required, use the official support site for the computer or graphics-adapter maker rather than an unofficial download service.
How to roll back the graphics driver in Device Manager
- Open Device Manager. Right-click Start and select Device Manager. You can also search for “Device Manager” from the taskbar and open the result.
- Expand Display adapters. Select the arrow beside Display adapters to show the installed graphics devices.
- Open the adapter’s properties. Right-click the adapter associated with the bad update and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab. In the properties window, select Driver.
- Select Roll Back Driver. Choose Roll Back Driver. If Windows asks why you are reverting, select the reason that best describes the problem and confirm.
- Restart when prompted. Allow Windows to restart. A restart is needed for the previous driver to become active.
After Windows starts again, reproduce the original symptom carefully: open the application that exposed the fault, reconnect the external monitor if one was affected, and check whether flickering, corruption, or missing output has stopped. If the problem remains, continue with the recovery paths below rather than repeatedly pressing the rollback control.
Diagnose screen flicker before changing anything else
Flicker is not proof of a driver failure. Microsoft’s troubleshooting method uses Task Manager to separate a likely display-driver problem from an incompatible application.
Use Task Manager as the comparison
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or by right-clicking the taskbar and choosing Task Manager. - Watch the Task Manager window while the rest of the screen flickers.
- If Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the display, a display-driver problem is more likely.
- If Task Manager remains stable while other content flickers, an incompatible application is more likely. Close or update the application before assuming the graphics driver is at fault.
This test is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee. A driver can fail intermittently, and an application can trigger a driver defect, so use the timing of the update and the behavior of Task Manager together.

Try the graphics reset shortcut
For a frozen display or an external-monitor problem, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. Windows resets the graphics subsystem; the screen may briefly go blank or flash and you may hear a short alert sound. This shortcut does not remove or replace the driver, so it is not a substitute for rollback when the trouble began with an update.
Restart before escalating
A normal restart is a basic step in Microsoft’s external-monitor guidance. If the monitor remains blank, disconnect and reconnect the display cable after the restart and verify that the monitor is powered on. If the issue returns immediately after Windows loads, proceed with the driver steps rather than treating the reset as a permanent repair.
When “Roll Back Driver” is missing or greyed out
Device Manager disables the control when Windows has no previous driver package to restore. This commonly occurs after a clean installation, after storage cleanup removed the earlier package, or when the current driver was the first one installed for that device. You cannot complete a rollback through that control when no previous driver exists.
Use the documented reinstall path
- In Device Manager, expand Display adapters and right-click the affected adapter.
- Choose Uninstall device and confirm the removal when Windows asks.
- Restart the computer. Microsoft says Windows will then attempt to reinstall the display driver.
- Test the display again. If Windows does not install a suitable driver or the fault persists, obtain a compatible package from the official support site for the computer or graphics-adapter maker.
The exact menus can vary slightly by Windows build and device. Do not select a different hardware category or remove unrelated devices. If you are offered a checkbox to remove driver software, read it carefully; removing the package can leave Windows dependent on a basic display driver until the correct package is installed.

Choose the correct official driver
For a laptop or a prebuilt desktop, start with the PC manufacturer’s support page. For a separately installed graphics adapter, use the adapter manufacturer’s official support page. Confirm all of the following before downloading:
- The exact computer model, service model, or graphics-adapter model.
- The Windows edition and architecture shown in your system information.
- That the package is intended for the identified device rather than a similar model.
- The release notes or compatibility information supplied by the manufacturer.
Microsoft warns against obtaining drivers from unofficial download sites. Avoid third-party “driver updater” utilities; they are not required for this repair and can select an incorrect package.
If the display is still unstable after rollback or reinstall
Use Safe Mode when normal Windows cannot be controlled
If flicker, a black screen, or repeated crashes prevents you from completing Device Manager steps, use Windows recovery options to start Safe Mode and then repeat the supported uninstall or rollback procedure. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting environment, not a replacement driver; return to a normal restart after the repair and test the display there.

Contact the device maker with precise information
If Windows cannot restore a suitable driver, or the same problem remains after reinstalling, contact the computer maker or graphics-adapter maker. Provide the exact model, Windows version, the date the symptom began, the driver version if shown in Device Manager, and whether Task Manager flickers. This information helps the manufacturer identify a compatible package and device-specific instructions.
Consider System Restore as a broader recovery
System Restore is a later option when a restore point exists from before the graphics update. Microsoft says it can return system files, registry settings, and installed programs to the state captured by that restore point without affecting personal files. Because it changes more than the display driver, use it when the update appears to have caused wider system problems or when the driver-only procedures fail.
On an encrypted device, have the BitLocker recovery key available before entering recovery tools. Without that key, Windows may not allow access to the restored system volume.
Do not confuse driver rollback with Windows rollback
A graphics-driver rollback is performed in Device Manager and targets one hardware driver. Windows-version rollback is a separate recovery process that returns the operating system to an earlier release after an upgrade. Microsoft says the Windows-version option is available only for a limited period, in most cases 10 days after the upgrade. Do not use it for an ordinary display-driver regression unless evidence points to the Windows upgrade itself as the cause.
Common symptoms and the appropriate next step
Flicker began immediately after a Windows Update
Run the Task Manager comparison, then use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver on the affected adapter if the button is available. Restart when prompted. If the button is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the driver instead.

“Roll Back Driver” is greyed out
Windows has no earlier driver package available through that control. Follow the uninstall-and-restart path and then install the correct official package if Windows does not restore one.
The external monitor stopped working
Restart Windows and try Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If the problem started after a driver update, roll back the display adapter. If the monitor still fails, reinstall the driver and consult the official support page for the PC or adapter model.

The screen is unreadable before Device Manager opens
Start Windows in Safe Mode, where the minimal display environment may allow the rollback or reinstall. If the display remains unusable even there, obtain model-specific help from the device manufacturer.
The rollback completes but the fault returns
Check whether Task Manager flickers. A stable Task Manager with flickering elsewhere points toward an incompatible application; a flickering Task Manager keeps the driver high on the list of suspects. Reinstall the driver and escalate to the manufacturer if the symptom persists.
After the repair: verify and document the result
- Restart normally and confirm that Windows loads without flicker or distorted graphics.
- Test the application that originally exposed the problem.
- Reconnect any external monitor and verify that it is detected and stable.
- Record the adapter model, driver version, and the date of the change so you can identify the working configuration later.
- If you installed a manufacturer package, keep its installer and release information in a known location in case another rollback is needed.
If the display works only with a basic driver, do not assume the repair is complete. A basic driver may restore visibility while leaving performance, resolution, or external-display support incomplete. Install the compatible package supplied for the exact device when Windows does not do so automatically.

The rollback command is not a general “undo” for every graphics problem. It depends on Windows retaining an earlier package for that particular adapter, and it applies only to that adapter. Administrator approval is required even when you are signed in to a standard account and an administrator can provide credentials.
Do not choose a driver solely because its name looks similar. Integrated graphics, a discrete card, and a laptop’s customized package can require different files. Match the exact model and Windows version, and prefer the computer maker’s package for a laptop or prebuilt system. Use the adapter maker’s site for a separately installed card.
If the problem is limited to one application while Task Manager remains stable, changing the driver may leave the real cause untouched. Likewise, a rollback cannot repair a damaged cable, monitor, graphics card, or power supply. A persistent fault after a correct reinstall is a reason to obtain manufacturer-specific help rather than repeatedly uninstalling drivers.

Rolling back is designed for a regression introduced by a newer graphics driver. It cannot repair a physically damaged monitor, cable, graphics adapter, or power supply, and it will not correct every application compatibility problem. The Task Manager comparison, the timing of the update, and the result after a clean reinstall help distinguish those cases.

Use the narrowest supported recovery first: reset the graphics subsystem for a temporary lockup, roll back the driver when the update caused the regression, reinstall when no previous package exists, and reserve System Restore or Windows-version rollback for the broader situations described above.
