You can use Samsung’s documented rollback route only for an enrolled One UI beta: withdraw from the beta in Samsung Members, connect the Galaxy phone to a computer, and choose Downgrade in Smart Switch. The process resets the phone and removes data created during beta testing, so make a verified computer backup first. For a normal public (stable) One UI update, Samsung says an older, less-secure version cannot be installed through downgrade. If an update failed and the phone no longer works normally, use Smart Switch Emergency Software Recovery instead; that is repair of a failed update, not a way to choose an older release.
Identify which situation you have
The word “rollback” covers three different situations, and Samsung gives them different treatment. Check the installed software and what happened immediately before you began troubleshooting.
| Situation | Samsung-supported path | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| One UI beta is installed and the phone is enrolled in the beta program | Withdraw in Samsung Members, then use Smart Switch Downgrade | The phone is reset; beta-created data is removed. A Smart Switch computer backup can be restored afterward. |
| A public, stable One UI update is installed and you simply prefer the previous version | No general Samsung downgrade route | Samsung support says an older version with weaker security cannot be installed through downgrade. Do not assume a firmware file or desktop flashing tool will bypass that policy. |
| An update was interrupted or failed and the device is not operating normally | Smart Switch Emergency Software Recovery | This is recovery from an update failure. It is not a menu for selecting any older One UI build. |
Samsung’s One UI Beta Program guidance documents the first case. Its general downgrade guidance covers the second, while the Emergency Software Recovery guide covers the third.
What Samsung officially supports
Beta software: a documented Downgrade command
When a Galaxy phone is participating in a One UI beta, Samsung provides a specific exit workflow. The beta enrollment is withdrawn in Samsung Members, and Smart Switch on a computer may then present Downgrade for that enrolled device. The availability of that command is tied to the device and enrollment; Samsung’s instructions do not establish that every model, carrier, country or beta build will show it.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Stable software: security policy blocks the ordinary downgrade
Samsung’s service guidance says Galaxy software cannot be downgraded to an older release that has weaker security. This is a policy and platform restriction, not merely a missing button in Smart Switch. A download of an earlier package, by itself, does not create a supported path back to that package.
Failed update: recovery, not version selection
Emergency Software Recovery is intended for an update that failed or was interrupted and left the phone unable to operate normally. It restores the device to a usable software state according to Samsung’s recovery process. It should not be presented as a third method for choosing a preferred historical One UI version.
Prepare before attempting a beta rollback
- Confirm the build type. Look for evidence that you joined a One UI Beta Program rather than assuming any new-looking interface is beta software. If the phone received the update through the normal public channel, use the stable-release guidance instead of the beta steps.
- Create and verify a computer backup. Use Smart Switch on a computer and confirm that the backup completes and is visible before you start the downgrade. Samsung states that a rollback resets the device.
- Have a reliable USB data cable. The cable must carry data between this particular Galaxy phone and your computer; a charge-only cable will not establish the required Smart Switch connection.
- Keep the phone powered and leave the connection alone. Samsung’s update-care instructions advise keeping the device charged, not disconnecting the cable, and not using the phone while software work is running. Read the precautions in Samsung’s smartphone software-update guide.
- Use a compatible computer and current Smart Switch installation. The rollback is performed in the desktop application, not from a browser page on the phone.
- Plan for model and market differences. Samsung does not promise that the Downgrade command appears for every enrolled device. If your phone is eligible but the command is absent, stop rather than substituting an unverified firmware package.
Step-by-step: Samsung’s beta rollback workflow
- Withdraw from the beta in Samsung Members. Open Samsung Members on the Galaxy phone, enter the One UI Beta Program area, and use the beta-program settings to withdraw. This changes your enrollment status; it does not by itself reinstall the previous software.
- Back up to a computer with Smart Switch. Connect the phone to the computer, open Smart Switch, run the backup, and verify that it is available. Do this before proceeding because the next stages reset the phone.
- Connect the phone with a USB data cable. Keep the phone connected directly to the computer and avoid moving or disconnecting the cable during the operation.
- Open Smart Switch on the computer. After the application recognizes the enrolled Galaxy device, look for the Downgrade command. Samsung’s beta instructions do not say that this command is universal; it may be absent for a particular model, market or enrollment state.
- Select Downgrade and read the warning. Confirm only after you understand that the phone will be reset and that data generated during beta testing will be removed.
- Follow every Smart Switch prompt. Let the application complete the software operation without using the phone, closing Smart Switch or removing the USB cable. Interrupting the process can leave you needing recovery assistance.
- Restore the computer backup after the phone restarts. Use Smart Switch to restore the backup you made before the downgrade. Only a backup that completed successfully and remains accessible can be used for this step.
If Smart Switch does not offer Downgrade after you have withdrawn from the beta, Samsung’s published instructions do not provide a universal workaround. Check the enrollment status and connection once, then contact Samsung support or an authorized service center for the specific model and market.
Data, reset and backup consequences
A beta rollback is not an in-place patch that preserves the phone exactly as it is. Samsung says the device is reset and data created during beta testing is removed. Treat the operation as a wipe of the current software environment: protect personal files first, and do not begin unless the backup you need is actually present on the computer.
Samsung also says a Smart Switch backup made on a computer can be restored after the rollback. The restore is therefore part of your plan, not an optional afterthought. Keep the computer and backup available until you have completed the restore and confirmed that the information you needed returned.

Why a stable One UI downgrade is normally blocked
Samsung’s restriction is reinforced by hardware-backed rollback prevention in Knox. The Knox Mobile Security White Paper explains that the device records the minimum acceptable bootloader version. Once a newer approved bootloader has been installed, an older bootloader may no longer be accepted, even if you obtain an otherwise valid older firmware package.
“Once a bootloader containing approved new software is installed, it fuses the version of that bootloader to hardware, preventing old software from being loaded.” — Samsung Knox Mobile Security White Paper

This mechanism is why a previous stable build cannot be treated like an ordinary app that you can uninstall. The exact minimum version is device-specific, and Samsung’s public support position is that an older version with weaker security cannot be installed through downgrade.
Do not infer that a generic firmware download, a different region’s package or a desktop flashing utility is a safe answer. Compatibility depends on the exact model and bootloader level, and the security fuse can reject an older bootloader. A failed attempt can create a separate service problem rather than restore the phone to the desired release.
Knox state and the risk of unofficial flashing
Knox documentation also describes the Knox Warranty Bit as a persistent record of a non-approved configuration. That bit is designed to show that the device has entered a state outside Samsung’s approved software configuration. Reinstalling software later should not be described as a guaranteed way to erase that state.

For a stable-release complaint—such as a changed interface, battery behavior or an app incompatibility—the lower-risk choices are to install Samsung’s current fixes when offered, document the problem for support, or use an authorized service channel. Attempting to force an older build is materially different from using the beta Downgrade command Samsung documents.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When to use Emergency Software Recovery
Choose Emergency Software Recovery when the update itself failed or was interrupted and the phone no longer operates normally. Typical signs are that the update process stopped, the device cannot complete startup, or Smart Switch identifies a failed-update condition. The purpose is to recover the device, not to let you select any historical One UI version.
- Open Samsung’s Phone Recovery Guide: Emergency Software Recovery and follow the Smart Switch recovery instructions for the affected device.
- Keep the phone connected as directed and allow the recovery process to finish without interrupting power or USB communication.
- If the guide provides a recovery-code method, note that Samsung describes using the code on another computer. This is an alternative recovery procedure for the failed update, not a downgrade selection.
- If recovery cannot complete, preserve any error information and contact Samsung support or a service center rather than repeatedly trying unrelated firmware files.
Separating recovery from downgrade matters: using the emergency workflow for a phone that is working normally will not give you a supported way to return to an earlier stable release.
What to do when the Downgrade option is missing
You withdrew from beta, but Smart Switch shows no Downgrade
- Confirm that Samsung Members shows the withdrawal completed on the same device and account.
- Reconnect with a known-good USB data cable and reopen Smart Switch.
- Check that the computer application recognizes the exact phone model.
- If the command still does not appear, stop. Samsung’s documentation does not establish universal availability, so Samsung support or a service center is the appropriate next step.
The phone is on a stable public build
Do not keep looking for a hidden beta command. The documented beta workflow is not a general stable-release rollback mechanism, and Samsung’s support policy rules out installing an older release with weaker security.
The phone will not operate normally after an update
Use the Emergency Software Recovery guidance, preserving any recovery code or error details. Do not describe the situation to support as a preference for an older version; report it as an update failure so the correct recovery path is evaluated.

USB cable and accessory considerations
A USB data cable is the only accessory directly required by Samsung’s beta workflow, because the phone must communicate with Smart Switch on a computer. Choose a cable compatible with both the Galaxy model and the computer’s port, and test that the computer can detect the phone before starting. Buying a cable improves the connection; it does not bypass the stable-release downgrade restriction or change the phone’s bootloader policy.
Common misunderstandings to avoid
- Withdrawing is not the same as downgrading. Samsung Members records that you are leaving the beta. Smart Switch performs the actual software operation only when it offers the Downgrade command.
- A backup is not a snapshot of every beta state. Samsung specifically warns that the phone is reset and beta-created data is removed. A backup is protection against that reset, not a promise that every app or setting will behave exactly as it did on the beta.
- A newer-looking interface does not prove beta enrollment. Public One UI releases can change the design too. Check how the build was obtained and whether Samsung Members shows beta participation.
- Emergency recovery does not open a version picker. It addresses a failed installation and aims to return the device to a working state.
- Changing regions is not a supported solution. A package intended for another market may not match the model or bootloader, and it does not override Samsung’s rollback prevention.
What to record before contacting Samsung
If support or a service center is needed, record the Galaxy model, the software build shown in the phone’s software information, whether the device was enrolled in the beta, and what Smart Switch displays. Note whether the phone starts normally, whether the update stopped partway through, and any recovery code or error message. This information helps support distinguish a missing beta Downgrade command from a failed update and from a stable-release downgrade request.
Do not repeatedly retry a procedure that Samsung has not documented for your situation. Keep the original backup, cable and computer available, and explain whether your goal is to leave a beta or recover from an interrupted update. Those are different support cases with different instructions.
A safe decision checklist
- Beta enrollment confirmed? If yes, the Samsung Members withdrawal and Smart Switch Downgrade route may apply.
- Public stable update? Expect Samsung’s security restriction rather than a supported downgrade.
- Update failed and the phone is impaired? Use Emergency Software Recovery.
- Backup verified before beta rollback? Do not proceed until the computer backup is available.
- Downgrade command absent? Do not substitute a random firmware package; contact Samsung support or a service center.
- Connection ready? Use a compatible data cable, a recognized computer and uninterrupted power while Smart Switch is working.
- After the reset? Restore from the verified computer backup and check that essential information is present before deleting the backup.
The practical boundary is clear: Samsung documents a controlled rollback for One UI beta participants, while stable-release downgrades are constrained by security policy and hardware rollback prevention. Emergency recovery addresses a failed installation, not a desire to run an older public build.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I roll back any Samsung One UI update with Smart Switch?
No. Samsung documents Smart Switch Downgrade for an enrolled One UI beta after you withdraw through Samsung Members. Samsung’s support guidance says a public stable release cannot be downgraded to an older version with weaker security.

Will a beta rollback erase my phone?
Yes. Samsung says the rollback resets the device and removes data created during beta testing. Make and verify a Smart Switch computer backup first, then restore it after the rollback.
Why do I not see Downgrade in Smart Switch?
The command is tied to the device and beta enrollment, and Samsung does not promise it for every model, market or build. Confirm withdrawal and the USB connection once; if it remains absent, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center.
Is Emergency Software Recovery a way to install an older One UI version?
No. It is for an update that failed or was interrupted and left the phone unable to operate normally. It is a recovery procedure, not a general version selector.
Can Odin or an older firmware download bypass the restriction?
You should not assume so. Samsung’s security policy and Knox rollback prevention can reject older bootloaders, and compatibility is model-specific. Unofficial flashing can also leave a persistent Knox Warranty Bit state.
What cable do I need for the beta rollback?
Use a USB data cable compatible with the Galaxy phone and computer. A charge-only cable cannot provide the Smart Switch connection. A cable does not bypass stable-release restrictions.
The Bottom Line
Use Samsung’s Downgrade command only when you are leaving a supported One UI beta, and expect a full reset followed by backup restoration. A normal stable One UI update generally cannot be rolled back because Samsung blocks older, less-secure software and Knox records a minimum bootloader version. If the update failed, use Emergency Software Recovery; do not treat it as a route to a preferred older release.
