If an ESXi patch leaves a host unstable, the supported in-place rollback is a boot-time switch to the previous retained image: reboot the host, press Shift+R while the ESXi progress bar is loading, verify the build shown, press Y to accept it, and press Enter to boot. This works only when ESXi still has a usable previous boot image and the version transition supports reversion. Back up the host configuration first, plan host downtime, and use a compatible reinstall-and-restore procedure if the previous image is not offered.
What ESXi rollback actually does
ESXi keeps a previous boot image after many updates. The Shift+R procedure tells the boot loader to start that retained image instead of the newly active one. It is not a general downgrade tool: you cannot browse a repository and select any historical build, and it does not undo every component changed by the patch.
Broadcom documents the procedure for hosts updated through VIB or image-profile operations, VMware Update Manager, or an ISO-based update. The exact result depends on the host’s current build, installation layout, update history, and whether later reboot-requiring changes replaced the retained image. The primary procedure is documented in Broadcom’s “Reverting to a previous version of ESXi” article.

Think of Shift+R as selecting an existing bootbank, not reversing a transaction. It does not remove the patch package from storage, reconstruct files that were overwritten, or restore an arbitrary earlier state. The prompt can expose only the image that remains available on that host’s boot device.

Check whether rollback is available before rebooting
Do not assume that the last patch is still available for reversal. Record the ESXi version and build, how the update was applied, and every change made since the host last booted. Confirm the target build against release notes and interoperability information for the cluster, storage, network adapters, and management tools.

Also identify whether the host is standalone or managed by vCenter, whether it participates in a cluster, and whether workloads can be moved elsewhere. Those facts determine how much downtime is acceptable, but they do not change the Shift+R keystroke sequence.
Protect the host and virtual machines
Back up the ESXi host configuration before making the patch or recovery change. Treat that backup as essential, not optional: if the previous image is missing or damaged, the documented alternative is to install a compatible ESXi version and restore the saved configuration.

A boot-device failure, reinstall, or partition change can make a local copy inaccessible. Record the backup’s date, the ESXi release it describes, and the credentials or procedure required to restore it. Confirm that the file can actually be retrieved before taking the host down.
For a planned recovery, put the host in maintenance mode. Migrate resident virtual machines to other hosts when possible; otherwise shut them down cleanly. Ensure you have physical console or remote-management access so you can see the boot screen and send the Shift+R keystroke. A remote shell alone is not enough for the timing-sensitive part of this procedure.
Review the release notes and interoperability requirements for the intended build. If the server manufacturer supplies a custom ESXi image or bundle, use the image appropriate to that hardware. Broadcom’s patching guidance covers these preparation steps in its ESXi update article.
Plan a back-out window rather than treating the reboot as an unattended task. Have console credentials, vCenter access details, storage and network diagrams, and the host’s licensing information available. If the host does not return, you will need those details for a reinstall or configuration restore.

Step-by-step: use Shift+R to boot the previous build
- Identify the intended target. Write down the build you expect to recover and confirm that it is compatible with the host’s hardware, drivers, storage, and vSphere environment.
- Complete the safety steps. Back up the host configuration, migrate or shut down virtual machines, and place the host in maintenance mode as your operating procedure requires.
- Open a real console. Use the server’s physical console or remote management console and initiate a reboot. Keep the console visible during the entire boot sequence.
- Watch the ESXi progress bar. As the hypervisor progress bar is loading, press Shift+R. Broadcom specifies this timing; pressing the keys after the bar has finished loading may do nothing.
- Read the recovery prompt. ESXi displays the previous boot image or build that it can use. Compare that value with the target you recorded. If it is not the intended build, do not confirm it.
- Confirm the selected image. Press Y only after verifying the build, then press Enter to continue booting.
- Allow the host to start. Wait for ESXi to finish booting, then reconnect it to vCenter or the standalone management interface and begin validation before returning workloads.
The key sequence is a boot choice, not a package operation. It does not download files, reconstruct a missing bootbank, or let you select an arbitrary older release.
If the console is supplied through a remote-management controller, send the keys to the active virtual keyboard rather than typing into a separate SSH window. Console latency can make the narrow timing window easy to miss, so watch the progress bar and be ready to repeat the reboot if no prompt appears. Do not hold the keys indefinitely; use the sequence when the bar is loading and follow the prompt’s instructions.
Validate the host after it boots
A successful boot is not proof that the host is ready for production. Validate the running build and the components that the failed patch affected.
- Confirm the ESXi version and build in the host or vCenter management view.
- Check management connectivity, DNS, time synchronization, and authentication.
- Verify that every expected storage device, datastore, path, and multipathing claim is present.
- Verify physical network adapters, virtual switches, port groups, VLAN reachability, and uplinks.
- Review the virtual-machine inventory, registration state, snapshots, and access to required datastores.
- Check vendor drivers, firmware-dependent components, and monitoring or backup agents supplied for the server.
- Review host and vCenter events for repeated driver, storage, networking, or agent errors before exiting maintenance mode.
Rollback does not necessarily restore every VIB to its former version. Broadcom specifically warns that reverting to a previous build does not revert the tools-light VIB version; plan any tools-light remediation separately rather than assuming it changed back with the boot image. Inventory problems can also occur after a rollback, so investigate the actual symptoms in your environment.
Compare the post-rollback state with the configuration backup and with another healthy host in the cluster. Check hardware health, alarms, NTP, certificates, host profiles, licensing, and backup connectivity. If a driver or agent still reports the patched version, do not conclude that Shift+R failed; that component may not be part of the reverted boot image.
Why the previous image may be missing
The host retained only one usable image
ESXi’s update process retains a previous image as a rollback copy and discards an older n-2 copy. Shift+R therefore normally exposes the immediately retained image, not a catalogue of historical builds. If that copy was removed, corrupted, or cannot be mounted, the prompt will not provide a usable rollback.
A later reboot-requiring change committed the host
Installing another VIB, applying a profile, or performing another operation that requires a reboot can replace the previous rollback copy. Check the complete host timeline rather than assuming the last patch is still available simply because it was recent. A software installation performed after the patch can matter even if it was unrelated to the original problem.

A 7.0-to-8.0 HA workflow removed the copy
Broadcom documents a specific vSphere High Availability case: after upgrading from ESXi 7.0 to 8.0, leaving maintenance mode can install the ESXi 8 FDM VIB and remove the older rollback copy. The article describes disabling vSphere HA before that upgrade as a workaround, with configuration backup and restore as another path. This is a narrowly documented upgrade scenario, not a reason to disable HA indiscriminately. See Broadcom article 386377 for the conditions.

The image is present but unusable
A prompt may appear without producing a viable host if the retained image is damaged, the boot device has errors, or the image lacks required hardware support. Treat repeated boot failures as a recovery problem, not as a reason to keep selecting the same image. Preserve logs where possible, then use the compatible reinstall and configuration-restore route.
Version-transition limits
Boot-device layout changes determine whether a prior version can be started. Broadcom states that reverting to an earlier version after upgrading to ESXi 7.0 is not possible because the boot-device partitions changed. For that case, the supported choices are to restore a boot-device backup or reinstall the desired earlier version.
The same Broadcom article states that reversion among ESXi 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0 is possible because those releases do not introduce partition changes between them. Treat that as a version-specific rule, not a guarantee for every build or installation method. Verify the exact source and target versions in the current documentation and on the host before scheduling a rollback.
Do not infer eligibility solely from the major version displayed in vCenter. Build numbers, installation method, boot media, and changes made after the upgrade can affect the available image. If documentation and the host prompt disagree, stop and resolve that discrepancy rather than confirming an unexpected build.

When no previous image appears, or the host cannot boot it, stop treating Shift+R as an available recovery mechanism. Use installation media for a compatible ESXi release, preferably the hardware vendor’s custom image when one is required, and restore the host configuration from the backup made before patching.
- Confirm the exact ESXi release and build that the environment supports.
- Obtain matching installation media or a vendor-customized image.
- Document boot-device, datastore, network, storage, and licensing details needed during recovery.
- Reinstall ESXi according to the hardware and storage design. A reinstall can affect local boot partitions and must be planned as a host outage.
- Restore the saved host configuration using the supported configuration-restore workflow for that release.
- Reapply any required vendor drivers, firmware-dependent components, certificates, and host-specific settings.
- Validate networking, storage, management connectivity, and VM inventory before returning the host to service.
A reinstall is not automatically a clean slate for every datastore. Still, local boot partitions and host-specific settings can be changed, so document which storage is local, which is shared, and which volumes must not be touched. Confirm the target disk carefully in the installer and follow the release-specific restore procedure.

The reinstall procedure is environment-specific; do not improvise partitioning or driver choices from a generic rollback instruction.
Do not confuse boot rollback with ESXi profile commands
Shift+R changes which retained boot image starts. It is different from using esxcli to apply software. Broadcom’s command-line guidance recommends profile updates for patching and documents this form:
esxcli software profile update -d <offline_bundle.zip> -p <profile_name>Reboot after the profile update completes. The update operation applies newer VIB content from the selected offline bundle while leaving installed VIBs that are absent from that profile untouched. By contrast, profile install replaces the host’s profile and can remove VIBs not included in it, including OEM or third-party drivers. Never present profile install as a routine rollback without comparing the target profile’s complete VIB set with the host’s current set.
Starting with ESXi 8.0 Update 2, Broadcom says esxcli software vib update and esxcli software vib install are no longer supported for ESXi upgrades or updates. Use the documented profile-based method for applicable releases. The distinction and command syntax are covered in Broadcom’s command-line patching article. These commands patch a host; they do not recreate the Shift+R previous-image option.
Before using any profile command, compare the profile’s VIB list with the host’s installed OEM and third-party packages. An apparently successful profile installation can remove a driver that storage or networking depends on. Profile update is a patching choice; Shift+R is a boot-image recovery choice, and they should not be substituted for one another.

The deciding questions are simple: does the prior boot image still exist, does the version transition allow it, and can the host be taken down safely? If any answer is no, prepare the reinstall path instead of repeatedly attempting a boot rollback.

Can I roll back to any older ESXi build?
No. Shift+R can start only the previous retained boot image on the host. It is not a build selector or downgrade repository, and an older n-2 image is normally discarded.
Why is Shift+R not showing a previous build?
A later reboot-requiring VIB or profile change may have replaced the rollback copy, the image may be missing or corrupted, or the source and target versions may cross a boot-partition change. Use a compatible reinstall and restore the host configuration when the image is unavailable.
Does rollback restore the tools-light VIB?
No. Broadcom specifically warns that reverting to a previous build does not revert the tools-light VIB version. Validate and remediate that component separately if required.
Can I use esxcli profile install as a rollback?
