Short answer: You cannot use an official Xiaomi procedure to roll a Xiaomi phone back to an earlier HyperOS release. Xiaomi Support states that “Xiaomi smartphones do not support rollback of the system.” If an update causes battery, performance, or app problems, Xiaomi’s documented order is to restart the phone, manually download the latest package from the HyperOS screen in Settings, back up your data and factory-reset only as a last resort, then submit feedback if the problem remains. A factory reset erases your data and is troubleshooting—not a downgrade.
What “roll back” means in this situation
A rollback, or downgrade, would reinstall an older operating-system build over the HyperOS version currently on the phone. That is different from reinstalling the same current package, clearing a setting, or resetting the phone to its initial state. Xiaomi’s Global Support troubleshooting FAQ gives a direct answer for its smartphones: “The Xiaomi smartphones do not support rollback of the system.” That is the company’s stated support position, so there is no Xiaomi-supported sequence for selecting an earlier HyperOS build.
The distinction matters because many internet instructions use words such as rollback, recovery, reinstall, and factory reset interchangeably. They are not equivalent. The official steps below are intended to correct a post-update problem while keeping the phone on the supported software path. None of them reinstalls an older HyperOS release.
Record the phone’s details before changing anything
The support guidance is general. It does not diagnose every model-specific battery, performance, or application problem, and the correct answer can depend on the phone, region, software channel, and account. Write down the following before troubleshooting so Xiaomi support can evaluate the exact configuration:

- Model and variant: include the full model name and, if shown, the regional or carrier variant.
- Region and software channel: note the country or region selected on the phone and whether the software is the expected regional ROM.
- Current HyperOS version and build: open the phone’s software-information screen and copy the complete version string, including any build suffix.
- Symptom and timing: describe what changed, when it started, how often it occurs, and whether it happens after a restart.
- Applications affected: list the specific apps, if the problem is limited to certain apps, and record any displayed error text.
Do not erase the phone until you have copied photos, contacts, messages, authenticator or passkey information, documents, and any other data that is not already synchronized. A reset can remove locally stored items even when the operating system itself remains current.
Use Xiaomi’s supported troubleshooting sequence
Follow these actions in order. Stop when the symptom is resolved; moving to the next step adds more disruption and, in the case of a reset, destroys local data.
1. Restart and check whether the symptom continues
- Save open work and restart the phone using the normal power-menu control.
- After the phone starts, wait for mobile service, Wi-Fi, and your usual background services to reconnect.
- Repeat the action that exposed the problem. For example, if an app failed to open, launch that same app; if performance was slow, perform the same task that was slow before the restart.
- Note whether the symptom disappeared, became less frequent, or is unchanged.
Xiaomi lists restarting as the first check because it is reversible and does not require deleting user content. A single successful launch does not prove that a recurring problem is fixed, so observe the behavior long enough to reproduce the original scenario.

2. Manually download the latest package
If the problem persists, Xiaomi’s FAQ directs users to request the latest available package from the phone’s HyperOS settings. The wording in the cited FAQ is “Down latest package”; Xiaomi may correct that label or display a translated variant in a later software version.
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Tap Xiaomi HyperOS.
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Choose Down latest package.
- Allow the phone to check and download the package, then follow the on-screen installation instructions if an installation prompt appears.
Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection and keep the phone charged during the download and installation. The operation is a request for the latest package available to that device and region; it is not a selector for an earlier build. If your menu uses different wording or does not show the option, record the exact labels and version information rather than following an unrelated file-flashing guide.
3. Factory-reset only after backing up
Xiaomi places a factory reset after the restart and package-download checks. Treat it as a last-resort troubleshooting action, not as a way to return to a previous HyperOS version. The reset removes user data and settings, while the phone remains on the software version installed by the update.
- Confirm that photos, contacts, messages, documents, and application data are backed up or synchronized.
- Make sure you know the credentials required to sign back in after the reset, including the account previously used on the phone.
- Check that any authentication app, passkey, or recovery code needed to regain access has been transferred or recorded.
- Only then use the phone’s built-in factory-reset control, following the current labels shown in Settings for your model and region.
- Keep the phone connected to power if the on-screen instructions require a lengthy reset or first-time setup.
Because Xiaomi’s FAQ describes the reset as troubleshooting, do not expect it to restore the pre-update build. After setup, test the original symptom before reinstalling every application and restoring every setting; that makes it easier to identify whether the problem returns with a particular app or configuration.

If restarting, obtaining the latest package, and (where necessary) resetting do not solve the problem, Xiaomi says to submit feedback in Settings. Include the model, region, complete HyperOS build, the steps that reproduce the symptom, and whether it survived a reset. Attach screenshots or error text when the feedback form permits it. This gives Xiaomi information tied to the affected build instead of an unsupported downgrade attempt.

When the phone cannot complete one of the documented actions or becomes unstable enough to prevent normal use, contact the appropriate Xiaomi support channel for the device’s market. Ask about that exact model, region, account, and build; do not assume that an instruction written for another market applies to your phone.
Why internet downgrade guides require caution
Many community posts describe unlocking the bootloader, obtaining a firmware file, connecting the phone to a computer, and using a flashing utility. Xiaomi’s safety and flashing FAQs warn that these system-level modifications are not an established standard support procedure for a rollback. They can expose the phone to malicious or unverified firmware, cause data loss or boot failure, create compatibility problems, disable security protections, affect warranty or service eligibility, and leave the phone inoperable.
Xiaomi’s broader OTA-downgrade guidance also warns that an older release may reintroduce vulnerabilities fixed in newer software, bring back bugs that the newer release corrected, reduce support, or brick the phone if the process fails. That material discusses MIUI and smartphones generally, so it should be read as general downgrade risk context—not as proof that a particular HyperOS model can or cannot accept a specified file.
There is no failure-rate or success-rate statistic in the cited Xiaomi material. A forum post that reports one person’s successful flash therefore cannot establish a safe method for another model, region, account, or build.
What bootloader and PC instructions actually establish
Xiaomi Community material surfaced in the support results discusses permission-based bootloader unlocking and connecting a phone to a PC over USB. That explains why some guides mention a computer and cable, but it does not create a Xiaomi-supported rollback path. Eligibility can depend on the device, region, account, current software, and Xiaomi’s authorization rules. Unlocking guidance also warns that the process erases phone data.
A USB-C cable, by itself, does not enable a downgrade. It may be used in an enthusiast procedure only if the phone has the matching connector and data-transfer support, the account is eligible, and the user accepts the security, warranty, data, and device-operation risks. None of those conditions makes the procedure an official recommendation. Do not begin an unlock or flash solely because a generic tutorial says that every Xiaomi phone follows the same steps.
Supported troubleshooting versus an unofficial flash
| Path | Official support status | Data impact | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart | Documented first check | No reset is described | Whether the symptom persists after a clean reboot |
| Download latest package | Documented through Settings → About phone → Xiaomi HyperOS → three-dot menu | Not described as a user-data wipe | Whether the current package can be downloaded and installed through the phone’s supported updater |
| Factory reset | Documented last resort | Erases user data; back up first | Whether the problem remains on a freshly reset phone running the current system |
| Feedback or support contact | Documented when the issue remains | No device reset implied | Provides Xiaomi with model-, region-, and build-specific problem information |
| Bootloader unlock and flash | Not established as a supported rollback method | Unlocking may erase data; flashing can also cause loss | Only that an individual, eligible setup may attempt a system modification; it does not prove safety or support |
The first four rows are the practical path Xiaomi documents. The final row is included only to explain why online instructions differ from the official answer.

Battery drain or unusual heat
Record when the drain occurs, whether the phone is idle or in use, and whether a restart changes it. Then perform the latest-package check. If you eventually reset, compare battery behavior before restoring all applications so the result is meaningful. Do not describe a reset as a battery downgrade or claim that it guarantees a fix.
Slower performance or freezes
Write down the task that triggers the slowdown, how long it takes, and whether the same task fails after a restart. If the latest package does not help, include those observations in feedback. A generic flashing recipe cannot be treated as a diagnosis because the support material does not establish that the older build is compatible with your device.
Applications that crash or stop working
List each affected application, its exact error, and whether other applications work normally. Record the HyperOS build and region before submitting feedback. The documented guidance does not promise that an older system will restore compatibility, and installing an unverified system image can introduce additional compatibility and security problems.

- Consider it: the symptom continues after a restart and the latest-package attempt, you have a verified backup, and you can tolerate setting up the phone again.
- Delay it: you cannot access important accounts, have not transferred authentication data, or need files stored only on the phone.
- Do not use it as a downgrade: the reset does not select or reinstall an earlier HyperOS release.
- Escalate instead: the phone cannot boot normally, the documented package process fails, or the issue remains after a clean reset.
A reset is most useful as a controlled test: it shows whether the symptom remains on the current system with user settings and applications removed. It cannot tell you that an older release would be safe or available.
A practical decision checklist
- Confirm the model, region, current HyperOS build, and exact symptom.
- Restart and reproduce the problem.
- Use Settings → About phone → Xiaomi HyperOS → three-dot menu → Down latest package, noting any label differences.
- Back up all local data and account-recovery information.
- Use the built-in factory-reset control only if the problem warrants the data loss and you understand that the current system will remain installed.
- Submit feedback in Settings with reproducible details if the symptom survives the preceding steps.
- Ask Xiaomi support for model- and region-specific help before considering any bootloader or flashing action.
This checklist deliberately ends with support rather than a generic downgrade command. Xiaomi’s published position does not provide a universal rollback recipe, and the variables that determine whether an unofficial procedure could even start are specific to the phone and its software channel.
Questions to answer before following a community guide
- Does the guide identify the exact model and regional software channel, rather than only a product family?
- Does it explain current bootloader authorization and the account requirements?
- Does it state clearly that unlocking can erase data?
- Does it identify how security protections, warranty or service, and device operability could be affected?
- Does it provide a recovery path if the phone fails to boot?
- Is the firmware source verified, and does Xiaomi currently support that operation for this exact build?
If a guide cannot answer these questions, treat it as an anecdote, not a safe procedure. Even a detailed tutorial cannot override Xiaomi’s stated lack of system-rollback support.
The bottom line
A Xiaomi phone does not have a Xiaomi-supported HyperOS rollback procedure. Start with a restart, request the latest package through the HyperOS screen, back up before any factory reset, and submit feedback or contact Xiaomi support when the problem persists. Bootloader unlocking and flashing are separate, unofficial system modifications with meaningful security, data, compatibility, warranty, and device-failure risks; they should not be presented as a standard downgrade method.
