There is no universal 3D-printer firmware rollback procedure. A safe downgrade starts by identifying the exact printer family, hardware revision, and current boot state, then following that manufacturer’s instructions and firmware package. The documented methods for Prusa printers and selected Ultimaker S-line machines use different files, media, and levels of physical access; neither method should be copied to another model.

Use this guide to decide whether your printer has a supported rollback path, prepare the correct firmware, and avoid the most common ways a downgrade can leave a machine unresponsive.

What a firmware rollback actually changes

Printer firmware is the software running on the machine’s controller and related electronics. A rollback replaces the installed version with an older image, usually to restore compatibility or remove a problem introduced by an update. It is different from changing a slicer profile or reloading a print file: the operation writes software to the printer itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The procedure, accepted file type, storage device, boot trigger, and recovery options are controlled by the printer’s manufacturer and hardware revision. A package made for one board or revision can be rejected, fail to boot, or damage electronics if used on another. “Older version” listings on a support site do not by themselves prove that every model can install an earlier image.

First decide whether you have a supported rollback route

Identify the exact machine

Read the model name and revision from the printer’s information screen, chassis label, purchase documentation, or the manufacturer’s support page. Record the complete designation rather than a product family nickname. For example, the Ultimaker recovery documentation distinguishes S5 R1 (2018–2020) from S5 R2 (2020 or later); the procedure applies to S3 and S5 R2, not S5 R1.

  • Write down the exact model and hardware revision.
  • Note whether the printer reaches its normal home screen, stops at a logo, or does not respond.
  • Record the currently installed firmware version if the interface still displays it.
  • Check whether the manufacturer documents a same-version reinstall, downgrade, or recovery process for that exact machine.

If you cannot establish the model and revision, stop at identification. A cross-brand recipe is not a safe substitute for the missing information.

Use the manufacturer’s own download area

Download the older image only from the official product page or Downloads page for the exact model. Prusa’s instructions for its listed families direct owners to the printer’s Downloads page and its older versions. Creality’s support center organizes manuals and firmware by product and model; select the precise product entry rather than relying on a similarly named listing.

Do not rename an image, combine files from different releases, or use a package intended for a different board revision. Keep the downloaded file unchanged until the manufacturer’s instructions tell you otherwise. If the page does not document an older image or a rollback method for your model, contact the manufacturer instead of guessing.

Preserve settings and document the reason for the downgrade

Before writing firmware, photograph or record important configuration screens and any custom values you will need to restore. Save relevant profiles and note the symptom that led to the rollback. This does not make an unsupported image safe, but it gives you a reference if a reset clears settings or if you need to return to the newer release.

Prusa’s documented USB downgrade

Prusa documents an alternate flashing process for the CORE One, MK4, MK3.9, MK3.5, and XL families. The ordinary update path permits newer firmware; a same-version reinstall or downgrade uses the alternate steps below. Apply these instructions only to the named families and only when the downloaded file is for the exact printer.

Prepare the file and USB drive

  1. Open the printer’s official Downloads page and select the required older firmware version for your exact model.
  2. Download the firmware file with the .bbf extension.
  3. Use a USB flash drive that your printer can read. Place the .bbf file in the drive’s root folder, not inside another directory.
  4. Eject the drive safely from the computer so the file is fully written.

Prusa’s procedure requires a USB drive, but storage capacity and file-system compatibility can vary by printer. Verify those requirements in the instructions for your model before buying or reformatting a drive. A drive that works for G-code is not guaranteed to work for firmware flashing.

Start the downgrade from the printer

  1. Insert the prepared USB drive into the printer.
  2. Reset the printer.
  3. When the logo appears during startup, press the display knob to open the flashing choice.
  4. Select FLASH.
  5. Select the older firmware file and confirm the operation when prompted.

Leave the printer powered and undisturbed while it processes the image. Do not remove the USB drive or interrupt power unless Prusa’s instructions for your exact model explicitly tell you to do so.

If the printer keeps returning to the home screen

Prusa suggests formatting the USB drive or trying another drive when the printer repeatedly boots to the home screen instead of presenting the flash option. Use a newly formatted drive with only the intended .bbf file in its root. Recheck that the file belongs to the exact model and that the drive is inserted before the reset.

Do not infer that a failed flash prompt means the printer accepts a different file type or a package from another Prusa family. Resolve the media and file-selection issue first; if the documented method still does not appear, use Prusa’s support route.

Where a factory reset fits

Prusa states that a hard factory reset can install firmware present on the USB drive. Treat this as a model-specific option within the supported CORE One, MK4, MK3.9, MK3.5, and XL instructions, not as a general downgrade mechanism. A factory reset can also remove user settings, so preserve the configuration information you recorded before starting.

Ultimaker S-line recovery is a different procedure

The cited Ultimaker documentation describes a recovery process for S3 and S5 R2 machines (2020 or later). It explicitly excludes S5 R1 machines from 2018–2020. This is a recovery workflow for an unresponsive or boot-stuck printer, not a routine rollback recipe for every Ultimaker model.

Why the risk and preparation are different

The S-line recovery process requires opening the machine and exposing electronics and the built-in power supply. The guide says this work may be performed only by someone authorized under applicable local or company rules and calls for electrostatic-discharge (ESD) precautions. If you are not authorized or trained to access the electronics, stop and arrange qualified service.

The documented recovery setup uses a microSD card between 1 GB and 32 GB. The card will be erased, so copy off anything you need before using it. A 2 mm hex screwdriver is also listed for this specific recovery procedure. These requirements do not become generic recommendations for other printers.

  • Supported Filament: Ideal: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET ABS, ASA; Capable : PA, PC; Not Recommended: Carbon/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer.

Follow the official recovery sequence exactly

  1. Confirm that the machine is an S3 or S5 R2 (2020 or later), not an S5 R1.
  2. Read the manufacturer’s recovery guide in full before opening the printer.
  3. Obtain the specified firmware and prepare the microSD card as the guide directs, remembering that it will be erased.
  4. Disconnect, open, and expose the specified electronics only if you are authorized to do so and can apply the required ESD precautions.
  5. Carry out the guide’s recovery actions in its stated order, including the specified card insertion and power steps.
  6. Close and reassemble the machine according to the guide before returning it to normal operation.

Do not substitute the Prusa USB process for this recovery route, and do not apply the S-line recovery instructions to an S5 R1 or another Ultimaker model. The differences in media, boot state, and physical access are intentional.

Prusa and Ultimaker procedures compared

Procedure Supported hardware Printer state Firmware source and file Transfer media How flashing starts Electronics exposed?
Prusa alternate flash CORE One, MK4, MK3.9, MK3.5, and XL families Documented for a printer that can be reset and display the startup logo Older version from the exact model’s official Downloads page; .bbf file USB flash drive; file in the root folder Insert drive, reset, press the display knob at the logo, select and confirm FLASH No opening step is described
Ultimaker S-line recovery S3 and S5 R2 (2020 or later); excludes S5 R1 (2018–2020) Recovery for an unresponsive or boot-stuck machine Firmware and instructions from the applicable official recovery guide MicroSD card, 1 GB minimum and 32 GB maximum; card is erased Use the guide’s recovery sequence after preparing the card and accessing the machine Yes; electronics and the built-in power supply are exposed

The table shows why a brand name alone is not enough. The supported revision, expected boot condition, file, media, and physical procedure all have to match.

How to choose the next step when the printer will not boot

It reaches the normal interface

Start with the exact model’s documented downgrade path. On the supported Prusa families, use the USB and startup-logo method. Do not open the machine or use a recovery card merely because an ordinary update failed.

It reaches a logo but never offers flashing

For a supported Prusa model, verify the USB drive, root-folder placement, file extension, and exact model package. Format the drive or try another one as Prusa suggests. If the printer still returns to the home screen, stop repeating random combinations and consult the model’s support instructions.

It is unresponsive or stuck during startup

Determine whether the manufacturer provides a recovery workflow for that exact revision. The cited Ultimaker S-line process is one example, but it is limited to S3 and S5 R2 and involves opening the machine. A printer that is not covered by a documented recovery method needs manufacturer or qualified service guidance rather than an improvised flash.

Firmware sources and community builds

Use an official image whenever one is available for the exact printer. Prusa warns that community firmware can cause permanent damage to printer electronics and states that users are responsible for community firmware. This is Prusa’s warning about its products; it is not a measured damage rate for every printer or every third-party build.

Do not download an image from an unverified mirror simply because its file name looks familiar. Check the model, revision, release, and installation method together. A file that is older is not automatically compatible.

Common rollback mistakes and their fixes

Using a family name instead of a revision

Symptom: The file is rejected or the machine will not start after flashing.

Fix: Stop and re-identify the complete model and hardware revision. The S5 R1/S5 R2 distinction demonstrates why a seemingly minor revision label changes the supported procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Putting the firmware in a subfolder

Symptom: A supported Prusa printer boots normally and never shows the flash choice.

Fix: Place the .bbf file directly in the USB drive’s root folder and retry with a correctly prepared drive.

Assuming a G-code drive is suitable

Symptom: The printer reads print files but does not detect the firmware.

Fix: Follow the firmware-specific media requirements. Prusa notes that a drive working for G-code may still fail for firmware flashing; formatting or another drive may help.

Opening a printer without authorization

Symptom: You are considering an electronics-level recovery because the printer is stuck.

Fix: Do not expose the power supply or controller unless the manufacturer’s guide covers your exact machine and you are authorized and equipped to follow its ESD and safety requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interrupting the write

Symptom: The printer becomes less responsive after a restart or power interruption.

Fix: Treat flashing as an operation that must run uninterrupted. Use stable power, follow the manufacturer’s timing instructions, and do not remove the storage device during the write unless the official procedure says otherwise.

A practical preparation checklist

  • Exact model name and hardware revision confirmed.
  • Current firmware version and failure symptom recorded.
  • Older image downloaded from the manufacturer’s page for that exact product.
  • File extension and any required naming rules checked against the official instructions.
  • Correct storage media available: USB for the cited Prusa procedure or microSD for the specified Ultimaker recovery.
  • Important settings and profiles saved or photographed.
  • Printer’s boot state classified as normal interface, logo loop, or unresponsive.
  • Authorization and ESD protection confirmed before any procedure that exposes electronics.
  • Another computer or storage device available if the first media fails, without mixing files from different models.

After the firmware is installed

Allow the printer to complete its restart before reconnecting storage or attempting a print. Confirm that the displayed firmware version is the intended one, then check the basic interface and the functions relevant to the problem that prompted the rollback. Restore only the settings you documented, and keep the older firmware file and release information so you can identify exactly what is installed.

If the printer still shows the original fault, do not assume that repeating the same flash will fix a mechanical, electrical, or configuration problem. Record the new behavior and contact the manufacturer with the model, revision, firmware version, file used, and point at which the process stopped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When not to attempt a rollback yourself

  • The manufacturer provides no older image or rollback instructions for your exact model.
  • You cannot distinguish the hardware revision from a closely related one.
  • The only available file comes from an unverified source.
  • The documented procedure requires opening electronics and you are not authorized or prepared to do that safely.
  • The printer is needed for critical work and you have no supported recovery path or service option.

In these cases, preserving the printer’s current state and obtaining model-specific support is safer than experimenting with a file or sequence intended for another machine.
