Rip each disc to a full-quality MKV once, store it in a central Plex library, and let each room choose Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding. Keep the original MKV as your archive; make a second, smaller HandBrake version only for clients that cannot play it directly. Correct language metadata and Plex subtitle preferences are what make subtitles automatic.
The setup that avoids re-ripping discs
You need an optical Blu-ray drive, MakeMKV for the initial remux, storage for the library (a computer or NAS), and Plex clients on the televisions or streaming devices. A wired network is preferable when several rooms will stream high-bitrate video at the same time, although the correct requirement depends on your clients and network capacity.
Plex does not directly play disc-image formats such as ISO, IMG, Video_TS, BDMV, or similar images. Remux the main title into an MKV first. Plex’s conversion guidance points to MakeMKV for that remux and HandBrake when you need an encoded playback copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the MKV preserves
MakeMKV describes MKV (Matroska Video) as a container that can hold unlimited video, audio, subtitle, chapter, and metadata tracks. During the remux, keep the audio and subtitle languages your household may need instead of stripping everything down to one track. The remux preserves the compressed media data rather than re-encoding it.

For exactly the same content, MakeMKV states that an MKV is roughly 40% smaller than the corresponding Blu-ray files (MakeMKV page accessed October 16, 2026). That is a container/remux comparison, not a promise that every disc or every resulting file will have the same size.
Rip and organize the library
- Insert the disc. Connect the optical Blu-ray drive to the computer running MakeMKV and open the disc.
- Select the main title. Choose the feature-length title rather than menus and extras unless you intentionally want those extras too. Retain the video, audio, subtitle, chapter, and metadata tracks needed by the household.
- Remux to MKV. Write the selected title to local storage. This creates a Plex-friendly file without the disc-image format Plex rejects.
- Use a predictable folder and filename. Put each movie in its own folder and use a consistent title and year, for example
Movie Name (Year)/Movie Name (Year).mkv. Consistency helps Plex identify and match the file. - Add the folder to Plex. Create or select a movie library and point it at the organized folders. Let Plex scan before processing the rest of the collection.
- Test one representative title in every room. Use a title with multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and chapters. Confirm playback and subtitle selection on each television, phone, browser, or streaming box before ripping the entire shelf.
How Plex decides whether to transcode
Leave Direct Play enabled. Plex sends a compatible file unchanged when an app Direct Plays it. If the streams are compatible but the container is not, Direct Stream repackages them with very little processing and no loss of video quality. When the client cannot handle the file’s container, codec, bitrate, or resolution, Plex transcodes it for that client.

Subtitles are part of this decision. An incompatible subtitle stream can force a full video transcode even when the video itself is compatible. Therefore, two rooms can legitimately behave differently with the same MKV: their apps and playback hardware do not have identical capabilities.
| Playback mode | What happens to the file | Typical server demand | Quality impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Play | The compatible file is sent unchanged to the client. | Minimal processing. | No conversion. |
| Direct Stream | Compatible streams are repackaged because the container is unsuitable. | Very little processing. | No loss in video quality. |
| Transcoding | Plex converts video, audio, subtitles, or a combination to match the client. | Higher CPU demand; the exact load depends on the conversion. | A converted video can differ from the archive. |
Make subtitles automatic
- Set your preferred subtitle language. In Plex’s account language and subtitle settings, choose the language you normally want and enable automatic subtitle selection according to your preference.
- Check every embedded track’s language metadata. Plex cannot match a track whose language is marked unknown to your preferred-language rule. In MakeMKV, retain the correct language information when selecting tracks; in Plex, inspect the title’s available tracks if the language is not recognized.
- Keep forced subtitles for foreign dialogue. A forced track is intended for translated sections inside otherwise non-subtitled content. Plex can select forced tracks when foreign audio is present, provided the track is correctly identified.
- Test both cases. Play a title with ordinary dialogue and another with a foreign-language scene. Verify that the preferred full subtitles do not appear when they should be off, while the forced translation appears when it should be on.
If enabling a subtitle causes the video to switch to transcoding, the subtitle format is not compatible with that client. Try another client-compatible subtitle track, or create a second encoded version for that room rather than altering the archive.

Keep the archive or encode a smaller copy?
For a multi-room collection, the safest policy is to keep the remuxed MKV and treat an encode as an additional delivery copy. The archive retains the tracks and chapters you selected; a smaller encode can be optimized for a particular television or network but may omit tracks or require conversion.
| Consideration | Archival MKV from MakeMKV | Smaller HandBrake copy |
|---|---|---|
| Tracks and chapters | Can preserve multiple video, audio, subtitle, chapter, and metadata tracks. | Depends on what you choose during encoding; omitted tracks cannot be recovered from that copy. |
| File size | MakeMKV says the same content is roughly 40% smaller than Blu-ray files. | Designed to reduce size further, but the resulting size and quality depend on the encoding settings; no universal figure is established. |
| Direct Play compatibility | Depends on each client’s container, codec, bitrate, and resolution support. | Can be tailored to a client that cannot Direct Play the archive. |
| Server CPU use | Low with Direct Play or Direct Stream; higher if a client must transcode. | Often lowers playback conversion work when it matches the target client, but encoding the copy itself requires processing time. |
| Subtitle behavior | All retained tracks remain available, but an incompatible track can trigger video transcoding. | You can choose a subtitle format the target client handles, at the cost of flexibility. |
| Need for a second version | None if every client supports it. | Useful when one or more rooms cannot play the archive smoothly. |
Plex specifically supports keeping multiple versions of the same movie. Name and store the second version so Plex can associate it with the original title, while retaining the untouched MKV as the recovery and future-compatibility copy.

Fix the common failures
The movie will not scan
Confirm that you produced an MKV rather than leaving the disc as ISO, BDMV, Video_TS, or another image. Check the folder and filename, then rescan the library.

Subtitles never turn on
Recheck the account’s preferred language, then inspect the embedded track’s language metadata. Plex does not treat unknown language metadata as a match. Also verify that the title actually contains the expected full or forced track.
Subtitles turn on but the server becomes busy
The selected subtitle stream may be incompatible with that client, forcing a full video transcode. Select a compatible track if one exists, or make a client-specific version with HandBrake.
The disc will not rip
MakeMKV states that it does not remove technological protection measures from commercial Blu-rays. Do not assume every disc can be processed; follow the law that applies where you live and use discs and software only as permitted.

Quick Recap
A practical rollout for a large collection
- Set up storage and the Plex library before processing discs.
- Rip one title with several audio and subtitle options.
- Test that title in every room and record which clients Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcode.
- For a client that struggles, create and test a second HandBrake version while keeping the original MKV.
- Process the remaining discs using the proven track selections, naming pattern, and folder structure.
- Back up the library or at least the irreplaceable files; a remux is convenient, but it is still a single digital copy unless you duplicate it.
