To rip a 4K UHD Blu-ray for Jellyfin, use a BDXL-compatible optical drive that supports MakeMKV’s LibreDrive workflow, extract the main feature and required tracks with MakeMKV, then either keep the resulting MKV as a remux or create a smaller encode with HandBrake. Organize each film in its own Jellyfin movie folder and test playback on every client you intend to use. A 4K filename does not guarantee direct play or HDR; the video codec, audio tracks, subtitles, display, and client hardware all matter.
What you need before ripping a UHD disc
A reliable workflow starts with hardware and software compatibility, not with the disc itself. Ultra HD Blu-ray media is commonly read through a BDXL-capable drive, but a drive merely labeled “Blu-ray” or “UHD” is not automatically suitable for MakeMKV’s UHD process. MakeMKV’s UHD FAQ describes a compatible LibreDrive drive as necessary for that workflow.
1. A compatible optical drive
Check the exact drive model and its firmware against MakeMKV’s current drive guidance before buying or flashing anything. Compatibility can depend on the drive revision and firmware version, so an old list of supposedly compatible models is not a permanent guarantee. The UHD FAQ itself was last updated on March 7, 2021; treat its general explanation as useful background and verify current compatibility before purchase.

- Look for BDXL capability, not only a standard Blu-ray logo.
- Confirm that the specific model and firmware work with LibreDrive.
- Do not assume an external USB enclosure will preserve the capabilities of the internal drive it contains; verify the complete device combination.
- Avoid changing firmware unless you understand the exact procedure and have confirmed that the change is appropriate for your drive.
If MakeMKV cannot recognize the drive’s UHD capability, changing Jellyfin settings or HandBrake presets will not solve the problem. Replace or correctly configure the optical-drive stage first.

2. MakeMKV
MakeMKV reads the disc and can either produce an MKV containing selected streams or create a disc backup on your hard drive. Its backup mode stores a folder structure rather than an ISO image, and it can optionally decrypt the content during the backup operation.
3. Optional: HandBrake
HandBrake is a transcoder, not a disc copier. It takes a readable source—such as an MKV or supported disc folder—and creates a new video encode. That can reduce storage use, but the video is re-encoded and therefore involves a fidelity and processing-time trade-off.
4. Sufficient local storage
Keep enough working space for the source, the temporary output, and any second encode you plan to create. No universal per-film storage figure applies: the result depends on the disc’s streams, selected audio and subtitle tracks, and HandBrake settings. A NAS or large local disk can hold the final Jellyfin library, while a separate scratch location can prevent an encode from filling the library volume.

5. Playback clients you can test
Jellyfin supports common containers such as MKV and MP4, but direct-play capability varies by television, streaming box, phone, browser, and desktop client. HDR also requires a capable display path and a supported format. Plan to test the actual devices that will watch the films rather than relying on the fact that a file is labeled 4K.
MakeMKV workflow: extract a movie from the disc
The following process keeps the decisions that affect Jellyfin visible. Names can vary slightly between MakeMKV releases, but the sequence is the same.
- Install the latest MakeMKV version. MakeMKV recommends keeping current for updates and fixes. Install it on the computer connected to the optical drive.
- Insert the UHD disc and let MakeMKV read it. Select the optical drive in the opening screen. If the drive is not detected as suitable for UHD, stop and resolve drive compatibility before continuing.
- Open the disc structure. MakeMKV will scan titles, chapters, video streams, audio streams, and subtitle tracks. Large titles are often the feature, but do not select by size alone; menus, extras, and alternate cuts can also be present.
- Identify the main feature. Use runtime, chapter count, and the stream language information to distinguish the film from trailers and bonus material. If the disc contains multiple cuts, inspect each candidate instead of assuming the largest title is the desired version.
- Choose the video stream. Keep the original video stream when you want a remux. This preserves the extracted video without a HandBrake video-encoding step.
- Select audio tracks deliberately. Retain the languages and formats your clients or receiver can use. A lossless surround track can be valuable for a home-theater client but unnecessary for a phone; keeping every track increases storage and can complicate client selection.
- Select subtitles. Include the full subtitle track, forced-only track, or both when the disc provides them and your viewing needs require them. Verify which track contains forced translations; labels are not always consistent across discs.
- Choose an output folder. Use a temporary or staging location rather than writing directly into a partially organized Jellyfin library. MakeMKV will create the MKV after reading the selected streams.
- Start the MakeMKV operation and verify completion. Wait for the job to finish, then check that the output file opens and that its duration, video resolution, audio tracks, and subtitles match your selections.
Disc behavior is not identical across all titles. If a title produces an unexpected runtime, missing audio, or an unreadable result, rescan the disc, inspect alternate titles, and confirm that the drive is stable before blaming Jellyfin.

MKV remux or HandBrake encode?
The key decision is whether to preserve the extracted video stream or create a new one. MakeMKV’s MKV output can be treated as a remux when the source video is copied without re-encoding. HandBrake always converts video, even when you choose a high-quality preset.
| Choice | What happens to video | Storage | Processing time | Playback considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MKV remux | The source video stream is retained; selected streams are placed in an MKV container. | Usually larger than an encode; the exact size depends on the disc and selected tracks. | Primarily limited by disc reading and stream writing; no video-encoding pass. | Preserves the source codec and HDR characteristics, but the client must support those codecs and formats. |
| HandBrake encode | A new video stream is created using the chosen encoder and settings. | Can be smaller, but no universal reduction percentage is established. | Requires a complete video-encoding pass and may take substantially longer than extraction. | Lets you target a codec and settings that more clients can decode, at the cost of re-encoding. |
Keep the remux when fidelity and future flexibility matter
A remux is the closest practical library copy to the extracted source because the video stream is not re-encoded. It is the safer choice when you have storage available, want to preserve the disc’s HDR video, or expect to add clients later whose capabilities are not known today. You can create a smaller derivative in the future without returning to the disc.
Remux does not mean every stream is preserved automatically. You still choose which audio and subtitle tracks MakeMKV writes, and you can remove unwanted extras. The container also does not make an unsupported codec playable: a client that cannot decode the video or audio may trigger Jellyfin conversion.
Encode with HandBrake when storage or compatibility is the priority
HandBrake is appropriate when you intentionally accept a new encode. Select a source MKV or supported folder, choose a preset, set the output container and codecs, and inspect the result on your clients. Smaller output is a possibility, not a guaranteed ratio; the result depends on the source, encoder, resolution, frame rate, quality setting, audio choices, and subtitle handling.
Do not describe a HandBrake file as lossless simply because a high-quality preset was used. The video has been decoded and encoded again. If you need a source-faithful archive, retain the remux and treat the HandBrake file as a viewing copy.

Some households keep one remux for archival quality and make a second encode for remote or low-power clients. This uses more total storage than keeping only one file, but it separates preservation from convenience. Give the two files clear names and test how your Jellyfin version handles multiple versions so that clients do not display confusing duplicates.

Choosing MKV, MP4, or a disc folder
Jellyfin’s movie documentation states that common video formats such as mp4 and mkv are supported. The extension is only one part of compatibility: the codecs inside the container, the audio format, subtitles, and client all affect whether playback is direct.
MKV
MKV is a practical target for MakeMKV output because it can carry multiple video, audio, and subtitle streams in one file. It is convenient for a per-movie Jellyfin folder and avoids retaining the disc’s menu structure. Verify client support for the particular streams inside the file.
MP4
MP4 can be useful when a target client has stronger MP4 support or when an encode is designed around widely supported codecs. Converting the container does not by itself convert the codecs; choose the output based on the client requirements and the encoder settings.

BDMV folders
Jellyfin supports BDMV folders in its movie guidance, but folder playback has limitations around multiple versions, parts, and external tracks. A folder can also be less convenient to move, back up, and identify than one MKV. Use it when preserving the disc’s folder structure is important and your clients handle it correctly.
ISO images
Jellyfin does not support disc-image formats such as ISO for ordinary movie playback. MakeMKV backup creates a folder structure rather than an ISO, and Jellyfin’s guidance is to remux a disc image to MKV or extract an appropriate VIDEO_TS or BDMV folder instead. Do not copy an ISO into the library and expect it to appear as a playable movie.
Organize the files so Jellyfin identifies them correctly
Use one folder per film and a recognizable movie name. A simple structure is:

Film Title (Year)/
Film Title (Year).mkv
The year helps distinguish films with the same title and improves metadata matching. Keep the movie file inside its matching folder rather than placing every title directly in one large directory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNaming remuxes and alternate encodes
Use a consistent base title and add a short, meaningful suffix only when needed, such as a cut or quality variant. If you retain both a remux and an encode, test your Jellyfin version’s multiple-version behavior and name the files so the intended version is apparent. Avoid adding a long chain of technical tags that obscures the title and year.
Handling extras and multiple cuts
MakeMKV can extract bonus titles, but a library focused on movies should not mistake every extra for a separate film. Store extras according to your preferred Jellyfin convention and verify how the server indexes them. When a disc contains theatrical and extended cuts, treat them as deliberate versions rather than silently replacing one with the other.
Add the library in Jellyfin
- Complete and verify the files first. Confirm that the MKV or supported folder opens locally, has the expected duration, and contains the tracks you selected.
- Open the administration dashboard. In Jellyfin, go to the server dashboard and choose the libraries section, then add or edit a Movies library.
- Choose the media folder. Select the parent directory that contains your per-movie folders. Use a stable path that remains mounted after reboot.
- Set the content type to Movies. Apply the movie library type and the metadata settings appropriate to your collection.
- Scan the library. Start a refresh and inspect the resulting title, year, poster, runtime, and available versions.
- Correct mismatches manually. If Jellyfin identifies the wrong film, use its item-edit or identify controls and adjust the filename or folder before rescanning.
Keep the server’s media path readable by the Jellyfin service account. A file that exists on a desktop but is inaccessible to the server process will not appear, regardless of its container.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Direct play, remuxing, and transcoding
Jellyfin can play compatible media directly, but it may convert incompatible video, audio, subtitles, or containers. Direct play uses the original streams with minimal server work. A remux changes the container or stream arrangement without re-encoding video. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes one or more streams and therefore uses considerably more server resources.
What determines direct play
- The client must decode the video codec, resolution, frame rate, bit depth, and HDR format.
- The client and playback chain must accept the selected audio codec and channel layout.
- Subtitle format and rendering support can determine whether subtitles force a conversion.
- The container must be supported by that client, even when another client supports the same streams.
- Network bandwidth must sustain the file’s bitrate for remote playback.
Use Jellyfin’s playback information panel while a film is playing to see whether the session is Direct Play, Direct Stream, or Transcoding. If a remux transcodes, identify which stream triggered it instead of immediately re-encoding the entire movie.

HDR is not implied by “4K”
A 4K file may contain HDR video, SDR video, or a format a particular device cannot display correctly. HDR requires a capable television or monitor, a compatible client, and support throughout the playback path. If the client lacks that support, Jellyfin may convert the video or deliver an unsuitable result. Test HDR on the actual display and client rather than inferring it from the resolution label.
Troubleshooting common failures
MakeMKV does not recognize the UHD disc
- Confirm the exact drive model and firmware against current LibreDrive guidance.
- Install the latest MakeMKV release and restart the application.
- Try another known-good disc to separate a drive problem from a disc-specific problem.
- Check the USB cable, power supply, and enclosure if the drive is external.
- Do not repeatedly change firmware without a documented, model-specific reason.
The output has the wrong title or runtime
Reopen the title list and compare runtimes, chapters, languages, and stream sizes. Discs can contain multiple cuts, seamless branching, extras, and duplicate-looking titles. Select the feature that matches the edition you intend to watch.
Audio or subtitles are missing
Return to MakeMKV’s stream-selection tree and enable the required language and format. Confirm that you did not select only a forced-subtitle track when you need full subtitles, or vice versa. After extraction, inspect the MKV’s track list before adding it to Jellyfin.

- Check that the server account can read the file.
- Verify the client’s codec and container support.
- Try a different audio or subtitle track to locate the incompatible stream.
- Review the playback session to see what Jellyfin is transcoding.
- If the client cannot handle the source, create a deliberate HandBrake encode targeted to that client instead of guessing at a new extension.
Playback stutters or buffers
Inspect whether the session is direct playing or transcoding, then check network throughput and server load. A high-bitrate remux can exceed the capacity of a remote connection or wireless segment even when the client supports every codec. A smaller encode may solve the bandwidth problem, but it changes the video stream and should be evaluated on picture quality.
Legal and ethical limits
Copy only discs you own or are otherwise authorized to copy. HandBrake’s documentation states: “Do not use HandBrake or any other application to copy materials you do not own or have the right to copy.” That guidance is not a jurisdiction-specific legal opinion, and rules on personal copies and circumvention of technical protection differ by country and region. Check the law that applies where you live before bypassing disc protection, and do not distribute extracted files without the necessary rights.
A repeatable decision checklist
- Drive: Is the exact BDXL drive and firmware confirmed for MakeMKV LibreDrive use?
- Source: Did MakeMKV identify the correct feature and complete without errors?
- Tracks: Are the required audio languages, surround formats, and subtitle types included?
- Format: Are you intentionally keeping a source-preserving MKV or creating a new HandBrake encode?
- Organization: Does the movie have its own folder with a recognizable title and year?
- Client: Have you tested the file on the television, browser, mobile device, or streaming box that will play it?
- HDR: Does the complete display path support the HDR format in the file?
- Rights: Are you authorized to make and store the copy in your jurisdiction?
Recommended workflow for most Jellyfin owners
Verify the drive before purchase, install the latest MakeMKV, and extract the main feature with only the audio and subtitle tracks you need. Keep the resulting MKV as a remux when preserving the source and HDR matters or when storage is available. Use HandBrake only when you have a clear storage, bandwidth, or client-compatibility reason to accept a new encode. Put the verified file in an individual, year-labeled movie folder, scan that folder into Jellyfin, and inspect the playback session on each target client. This sequence avoids treating the file extension, resolution label, or a generic preset as a guarantee of successful playback.
