For curbside recycling, first confirm that your local program accepts the container. Empty it, then rinse or scrape away visible food residue; for accepted plastic containers, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says “spatula-clean” is clean enough. Check local instructions for caps and lids, because acceptance and processing rules vary by community and facility.
Check whether the container belongs in your curbside bin
Look up your municipality’s or hauler’s current accepted-items list before preparing a container. A recycling-related symbol or resin identification code can identify a plastic type, but it does not guarantee that your local program accepts it. How to prepare an accepted container
- Confirm acceptance. Check the current curbside rules for the specific container type and material.
- Empty it. Pour out leftover liquid and remove remaining food.
- Rinse or scrape visible residue. You do not need to wash an accepted plastic container until it is spotless. The EPA’s practical standard is “spatula-clean.”
- Check the cap or lid rule. Follow your local provider’s direction on whether to leave it attached, remove it, or handle it another way.
- Put it out as directed. A clean container still belongs in the bin only if the local program accepts it.
How clean is clean enough?
The EPA says accepted plastic containers can be rinsed or scraped to remove food residue; its guidance states, “Spatula-clean” is clean enough to recycle. You do not need to remove every trace of residue with a full wash. The cited EPA guidance does not set a special detergent, hot-water, or sterilization requirement. Ordinary rinsing or scraping is the preparation it describes.

What should you do with caps and lids?
There is no single cap-or-lid rule for every curbside program. The EPA says caps may be recyclable when attached and explains that newer facilities can process some bottles with lids left on, but facility capabilities differ. Metal and glass food containers
For containers your program accepts, the EPA’s general guidance is to empty and rinse away food debris. Confirm local acceptance for the particular item.
Paper and cardboard
Keep paper and cardboard separate from food residue: the EPA says paper materials should be empty, clean, and dry. The “spatula-clean” wording is guidance for plastic containers, not a standard to apply to paper.

Why local instructions matter
Both eligibility and preparation can vary: one program may accept a container type another does not, and facilities differ in how they handle caps and lids. As a UK-specific example, Recycle Now advises replacing bottle lids and leaving lids that are already attached in place.
