If you lost money in a Solana memecoin incident, stop signing transactions first. Then determine whether you granted a token-account delegate or exposed your wallet’s recovery phrase/private key. An owner-signed Revoke instruction removes an ordinary delegate’s remaining allowance, but it cannot return tokens already transferred. If the signing key may be exposed, revocation is not enough: create a new wallet with a new recovery phrase and move remaining assets there. Solana transactions are permanent, so treat containment and migration as separate tasks.

Contain the incident before touching the wallet again

Do not sign a new “recovery,” “refund,” or “verification” transaction from the suspicious site. A prompt that appears after a loss can be another attempt to obtain an approval or a signature. Solana’s Staying Safe on Solana guide recommends verifying the recipient, checking the source of a request, and declining transactions you do not understand.

  1. Close the suspicious session. Disconnect the wallet from the site if your wallet offers that control, then close the browser tab. Do not revisit the site through a link sent in a message.
  2. Ignore unsolicited support messages. Solana says legitimate support does not initiate unsolicited direct messages, and “No legitimate service will ask for your seed phrase.” Never give a recovery phrase, private key, wallet password, or one-time code to a supposed helper.
  3. Preserve evidence. Record the wallet address, token-account address, transaction signatures, destination addresses, timestamps, and amounts. Save the exact website address and screenshots of prompts without clicking them again.
  4. Use a trusted wallet or explorer interface only to inspect. Check the transaction details and token-account state. Do not connect the wallet to an unverified “approval checker” merely to find out what happened.
  5. Separate containment from recovery. A delegate revocation limits a particular token account. A new wallet is required when the old signing key is no longer trustworthy.

What a Solana token approval actually grants

In the ordinary Solana Token Program, a token account can have one current delegate and a delegated amount. The token-account owner approves a specific address to transfer or burn tokens up to that allowance. The approval is attached to that token account, not automatically to every asset in the wallet. Solana’s Approve Delegate documentation describes this account-level permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Approving another delegate replaces the previous delegate and allowance for that token account. This means an approval is bounded, but it is not harmless: while the allowance remains, the delegate can use the permitted authority without asking for a new owner signature for each covered transfer or burn.

Question Ordinary delegate answer
Where is the permission stored? On one specific token account.
How many current delegates can that account have? One current delegate.
What is limited? The delegated amount and the token account covered by the approval.
What can the delegate do? Transfer or burn tokens within the approved authority.
What happens when a new delegate is approved? The previous delegate and allowance are replaced.
How is it removed? The token-account owner signs the Token Program’s Revoke instruction.

For a broader explanation of delegated spending, see Solana’s Spend Permissions documentation. The exact transaction you signed still matters; a malicious application may have requested additional instructions in the same signing session.

Decide whether you need revocation, migration, or both

Use the scope of the compromised authority to choose the response. When you cannot confidently identify what was signed, treat the event as potentially broader than a single approval and prioritize moving remaining assets to a new wallet.

Situation Authority involved Correct containment What it does not accomplish
A known token-account delegate still has an allowance Delegate on one token account Owner-signed Revoke for that token account It does not reverse earlier transfers or protect other accounts.
The recovery phrase or private key was entered, photographed, exported, or sent The wallet’s signing key Create a new wallet and transfer remaining assets Revoking a token delegate does not make the exposed key safe.
A site requested an unfamiliar transaction and the scope is unclear Unknown; may include approvals or other instructions Stop signing, inspect the transaction, and migrate if key exposure is possible There is no protocol guarantee that a later revoke cancels every instruction already authorized.
A mint has a permanent delegate Mint-level Token Extension authority Do not expect an account-level revoke to remove it; assess the mint and its issuer The individual token-account owner cannot revoke that mint-level authority.

Inspect the transaction and token account safely

Before revoking, identify the token account that held the approval. A wallet can contain multiple token accounts for different mints, so revoking the wrong account will not address the incident.

  1. Open the transaction in a trusted wallet history view or a trusted explorer you already use. Confirm the network is Solana mainnet if that is where the loss occurred.
  2. Read the signer, instruction names, token mint, source token account, delegate address, and amount. Compare the receiving address with the address you intended to use.
  3. Check whether the transaction shows an approval/delegation instruction or another authority change. Do not infer that every suspicious transfer was caused by a delegate.
  4. Write down the exact token-account address and the delegate address. If there is no delegate, a Revoke instruction has nothing to remove on that account.
  5. If the transaction is incomprehensible or the phrase may have been exposed, stop investigating from the old wallet and prepare a new-wallet migration instead.

Solana’s safety guidance emphasizes checking transaction details and the destination before signing. Inspection should be read-only; never paste a recovery phrase into a website to obtain more information.

How to revoke an ordinary token-account delegate

The Solana Token Program’s Revoke instruction clears the current delegate and sets the delegated amount to zero. The owner of the token account must sign the transaction. Solana documents the command-line form as spl-token revoke <TOKEN_ACCOUNT_ADDRESS> in the SPL Token CLI Reference.

CLI procedure

  1. Confirm your setup. Use the official SPL Token CLI documentation, the correct Solana cluster, and the wallet that owns the token account. A revoke submitted to a different cluster or signed by a different key will not affect the account you investigated.
  2. Copy the address exactly. Use the token-account address, not merely the wallet address and not the mint address. Check every character before entering it.
  3. Run the command. spl-token revoke <TOKEN_ACCOUNT_ADDRESS>
  4. Review the transaction before signing. Confirm that the instruction is Revoke, the account is the one identified in the suspicious transaction, and the fee and network are expected.
  5. Sign with the token-account owner. The owner signature is required. A delegate cannot revoke itself through the owner-only operation.
  6. Verify confirmation. Recheck the token-account data after confirmation. The delegate field should be cleared and the delegated amount should be zero.

What “all-or-nothing” means

Revoke removes the entire current allowance. It is not a command for reducing the amount to a smaller number. If you need a different bounded permission later, create a new approval only after you understand the application and the delegate address.

If the command fails

  • Wrong signer: The connected key does not own the token account. Recheck the account owner before trying again.
  • Wrong account: You supplied a wallet address or mint address instead of the token-account address. Return to the transaction details and copy the source token account.
  • Wrong cluster: The account exists on another Solana cluster. Select the cluster where the loss and approval occurred.
  • No delegate: The account may already have no active delegate, or the approval was on a different token account. Inspect the original transaction again.
  • Insufficient fee balance: The owner wallet needs enough SOL for the network fee. Do not obtain SOL by signing an unfamiliar “funding” transaction from the suspicious site.

Wallet interfaces can label the same operation differently, and no single interface path is universal. If your wallet exposes a verified Revoke control, compare its transaction details with the Token Program operation. Do not follow an unverified support agent’s screen-by-screen instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What revocation cannot undo

Revocation removes the delegate’s subsequent authority for the specified token account. It does not pull tokens back from a destination, restore a burned balance, or reverse a confirmed transaction. Solana’s safety guide explains that transactions are permanent. A successful Revoke therefore protects the remaining allowance; it is not a recovery mechanism for funds already moved.

If tokens continued leaving the wallet after revocation, investigate whether another token account was approved, a different authority was used, or the signing key was compromised. Do not keep experimenting with the old wallet while the cause is uncertain.

If your recovery phrase or private key may be exposed

A recovery phrase is fundamentally different from a token approval. Anyone who obtains the phrase or private key can sign for the wallet, including transactions that do not involve the delegate you revoked. Solana calls the seed phrase “the most important thing to protect” in its Staying Safe on Solana guide.

Move remaining assets to a new wallet

  1. Create the destination wallet from a verified official wallet source. Generate a completely new recovery phrase. Do not reuse the exposed phrase or import it into another application.
  2. Secure the new phrase offline. Write it down accurately and store it where only you can access it. Never put it into a website, online form, chat, cloud note, screenshot, or support ticket.
  3. Verify the destination address on the new wallet. Compare the address on the device or wallet screen with the address you intend to use. A single character error can send assets elsewhere.
  4. Plan the transfer order. Move valuable tokens and NFTs first, while keeping enough SOL in the old wallet to pay required transaction fees. If an attacker is actively signing from the old key, speed may matter more than convenience.
  5. Review each transaction before signing. Confirm the source, destination, asset, amount, and network. Do not approve additional permissions bundled with a simple transfer.
  6. Verify arrival in the new wallet. Check the new wallet’s balances and transaction confirmations using a trusted interface.
  7. Retire the old wallet. Do not continue using the exposed address for deposits or approvals. Keeping it visible for monitoring is different from trusting it with assets.

Solana’s What is a Wallet? explanation describes the recovery phrase as the basis for wallet access. If you merely lost the phrase but still control the wallet, create a new wallet and transfer assets while you still have access; if you lose both the phrase and access, there is no protocol reset that can reconstruct it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not “test” an exposed wallet

Importing a stolen phrase into a different wallet application does not change the keys. Changing a password on one app, disconnecting a website, or revoking one delegate cannot repair a compromised signing key. Migration is the security boundary: the remaining assets must be controlled by a newly generated phrase.

Permanent delegates and other authorities

Not every authority that resembles an approval can be removed by a token-account owner. The Token Extension Program’s Permanent Delegate is a mint-level authority. It can authorize transfers or burns across token accounts for that mint, and an individual token-account owner cannot remove it with Revoke.

Authority type Scope Who controls the change? Can an ordinary Revoke remove it?
Token-account delegate One token account and its delegated amount The token-account owner can clear it Yes
Permanent delegate Mint-level authority across token accounts for that mint The authority defined by the mint’s Token Extension configuration No
Mint authority Authority to perform mint-related operations The current mint authority No
Freeze authority Authority to freeze or thaw token accounts where applicable The current freeze authority No

Solana’s Set Authority documentation explains that setting a selected authority role to None permanently removes that role. That is a mint or authority-management decision, not a routine response to losing money in a memecoin. Do not attempt it unless you are the relevant authority and understand the irreversible effect.

Strengthen the replacement wallet

  • Use a hardware wallet for large amounts when practical. Solana’s safety guide identifies hardware wallets as appropriate for holding larger balances. This is a forward-looking protection, not a way to recover a loss or make an exposed key safe.
  • Keep the recovery phrase offline. Anyone asking for it is asking for control of the wallet, regardless of the claimed reason.
  • Check every URL. Use the project’s verified official channels to find a site. Look for misspellings, unexpected domains, and links delivered by unsolicited messages.
  • Read transaction instructions. A page can describe a transaction as a claim while the wallet requests an approval, transfer, burn, or authority change.
  • Use separate wallets for separate risk levels. A wallet used for experimental tokens should not automatically hold long-term savings. This limits the amount exposed when an application is malicious.
  • Review approvals periodically. Keep a written record of token accounts where you intentionally granted allowances, and revoke permissions that are no longer needed.

Document and report without expecting reimbursement

Keep the incident record together: wallet and token-account addresses, delegate and destination addresses, transaction signatures, timestamps, token mint, amounts, screenshots, and the suspicious site URL. Solana recommends documenting and reporting incidents. A report may help an investigation or warn others, but it does not reverse a permanent blockchain transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be especially cautious after reporting. Losses attract impersonators who claim they can trace, unlock, or recover funds. A genuine support channel will not need your recovery phrase or private key. Treat a direct-message recovery offer as another security incident, not as assistance.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Did you enter or disclose the recovery phrase/private key? If yes or uncertain, create a new wallet and move remaining assets; do not rely on Revoke.
  2. Can you identify a delegate and its token account? If yes, revoke that account using the owner signature and verify the cleared delegate.
  3. Were multiple token accounts or instructions involved? Inspect each account and transaction; one revoke covers only one current delegate on one token account.
  4. Does the mint use a permanent delegate? An account owner cannot remove that mint-level authority. Assess the mint’s authority and issuer instead.
  5. Have you been promised recovery? Stop communicating, preserve evidence, and never send credentials or sign an unexplained transaction.

The safe sequence is therefore: stop signing, identify the authority, revoke an ordinary allowance when appropriate, migrate immediately if the key may be exposed, and preserve records for reporting. These actions limit future loss; they do not rewrite the ledger.
