To revoke a risky token approval, use a wallet approval-management feature or a reputable allowance checker on the same blockchain network where you granted it, select the spender permission you want to remove, and sign the revocation transaction. It costs a network fee. Disconnecting a site from your wallet is not enough: that does not cancel an allowance already recorded on-chain.
What a token approval allows—and why it can remain risky
An ERC-20 approval sets an allowance for a spender, usually a smart contract. That spender can use the token’s transferFrom mechanism to move tokens from your address, up to the approved amount. The permission is recorded on-chain and can remain in effect after you stop using the app. ethereum.org warns: “If you grant contract permissions, they can be used, even years after they’re granted.”
An unlimited approval gives the spender a broader permission than a limited allowance. It can reduce repeat approval prompts, but if the spender’s contract is malicious or compromised, the approved token balance may be exposed. This is a risk created by the scope of the permission, not evidence that every approval will be abused.

Disconnecting changes the connection between a website and your wallet. It does not erase an ERC-20 allowance already granted on-chain. If your concern is that a spender can still transfer an approved token, revoke or reduce that token allowance through an on-chain transaction; disconnecting alone does not do it.

How to find and revoke an allowance
- Choose an approval-management interface. ethereum.org lists Etherscan and Blockscout for Ethereum and names multi-network services including Revoke, Unrekt, and EverRevoke. MetaMask also documents allowance controls in Portfolio. These are examples, not guarantees of safety. Use an interface you can verify and understand before connecting your wallet.
- Select the exact network. Connect or view the wallet on the chain whose permissions you want to inspect. An Ethereum allowance view does not show approvals granted on another network. Check each relevant chain separately, and confirm the specific tool supports it. MetaMask’s Portfolio spending-cap page lists Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, BNB Chain, Optimism, and Base; its separate revocation article lists Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, and BNB Chain. Those are page-specific coverage lists, not a promise that every MetaMask feature supports all five networks.
- Inspect the token and spender. Review the token, spender contract, allowance amount, and network. Prioritize permissions you no longer need, do not recognize, or consider excessive. Do not decide that a contract is trustworthy—or dangerous—based only on a displayed name; labels do not independently establish contract identity or legitimacy.
- Select the allowance to revoke and review the wallet prompt. Confirm the network and transaction details in your wallet before signing. Revocation is an on-chain transaction, so it requires gas. The fee and confirmation time vary with network conditions; there is no reliable universal fee or timing figure.
- Verify the result. After the transaction processes, refresh the checker or reconnect the wallet. Confirm that the selected spender no longer has an active allowance for that token and address on that network.
What revoking does—and what it does not do
Revocation removes or reduces the selected spender’s permission for the token and address covered by the transaction. It does not recover tokens already transferred, establish that a contract is safe, or revoke permissions on other chains. Review each relevant network separately.
ethereum.org says revoking an allowance should not terminate staking, pooling, or lending positions. However, an operation that needs permission to transfer tokens may require you to approve the token again before using it. The effect depends on the position and the application’s design.

When approvals expire, and how to reduce future exposure
There is no general expiration date for an ERC-20 allowance: it can remain active until it is changed or revoked, or until the relevant token or contract behavior makes it unusable. Do not assume that leaving an app, disconnecting your wallet, or waiting will cancel it.
When using a dapp again, it may request a new approval. If the wallet or token interface gives you a choice, approve only the amount needed for the action instead of granting an unlimited allowance. MetaMask suggests making approval reviews a monthly habit; treat that as its practical recommendation, not a universal requirement.

The ERC-20 specification cautions interfaces about changing an allowance directly from one nonzero amount to another, because of a transaction-ordering risk. Wallets may handle allowance changes differently, so do not try to work around a wallet’s review flow with a manual contract interaction unless you understand the exact transaction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which token permissions are covered?
This guide focuses on ERC-20 approvals for fungible tokens. MetaMask explains that ERC-20 and ERC-777 tokens require spending caps for the flows it describes, while ETH itself does not use this token-allowance mechanism. NFT permissions, including ERC-721 and ERC-1155 operator approvals, use different mechanisms; check an interface that specifically displays those permissions rather than assuming an ERC-20 allowance checker covers them.
