To revoke a crypto wallet approval, find the allowance on the network where you granted it and submit an on-chain transaction that removes the spender’s permission. Disconnecting your wallet from a dapp is not enough: it ends the wallet connection, but an existing token allowance can remain active.
What a wallet approval allows—and what disconnecting does
A token approval is an on-chain permission that lets a smart contract, called the spender, access or move a specified token from your self-custody wallet. DeFi apps often request approvals to perform an action, and the allowance may persist after that interaction is over. MetaMask explains the distinction in its token approval guidance.
Disconnecting a wallet from a dapp changes its connection and visibility permissions; it does not cancel an allowance already recorded on-chain. ethereum.org warns that a project can still use tokens covered by an allowance after you disconnect. Treat disconnecting and revoking as separate actions: disconnect when you no longer want a site connected, and revoke allowances you no longer want a contract to hold.
How to review and revoke an approval

Identify the network
Check the chain on which you made the approval. An allowance on one network is not automatically an allowance on another. Choose a checker that supports that chain; MetaMask describes its Portfolio allowance feature for Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, and BNB Chain, while support can change. Open a trusted approval checker
Navigate directly to a wallet interface or the relevant network’s block explorer approval checker. MetaMask lists explorer checkers such as Etherscan, BscScan, and Polygonscan, along with Revoke.cash and MetaMask Portfolio. Etherscan describes its Token Approval Checker as a way to review and revoke token allowances. Confirm that the selected tool supports your network and the permission type you want to inspect.

Inspect the token, spender, and allowance
Review each entry’s token, spender address or contract, and permitted amount. Prioritize permissions you do not recognize or no longer need. A familiar app or contract name alone does not prove that an approval is safe; check the actual spender and permission before acting.

Submit the revocation transaction
Select the revoke action for the intended permission, then check the wallet prompt carefully. For ERC-20 tokens, Revoke.cash says revocation sets the allowance to zero; for NFT approvals, it sets the approval to false. Confirm that the transaction is for the intended network and permission before signing. Revocation is an on-chain change, not merely a setting in your wallet.

Verify the result
After the transaction is confirmed, revisit the checker and confirm the allowance or approval reflects the change. If the entry still appears active, check that you selected the correct network and that the revocation transaction completed successfully.

Fees, future approvals, and what revocation changes
Revoking an approval requires an on-chain transaction and therefore gas. The fee depends on the network and transaction conditions; there is no single reliable fixed cost. Read the wallet’s fee estimate before confirming.
Revocation removes the specified permission; it does not undo a transfer that has already happened. Revoke.cash explains that revoking an allowance does not remove tokens already deposited or staked in a protocol. If you later use a protocol that needs the token again, you may need to approve it again; adding more tokens to a position may also require a new approval.

Allowances are not the only permission type
Some permission mechanisms use signatures rather than the traditional token-approval flow. Permit signatures and Permit2 are examples. A basic allowance checker may not show every kind of permission or cover every chain, so check the tool’s current documentation when you are investigating a specific signature-based authorization. MetaMask discusses these approaches in its July 10, 2026 overview of token approvals and crypto permissions.

- It does not recover tokens that a spender has already transferred.
- It does not secure a wallet whose recovery phrase or signing device may be compromised.
- It does not guarantee that your wallet or other permissions are otherwise safe.
- It does not replace disconnecting from a site you no longer want connected.
If you suspect your wallet itself is compromised, revoking approvals alone is not a complete incident-response plan. The guidance here addresses token permissions, not broader wallet recovery or compromise.
