How do I revoke and replace a compromised TLS certificate? First regain control of the server, DNS, deployment pipeline, certificate-authority account, and any other credential involved. Then ask the issuing certificate authority (CA) to revoke the affected certificate, generate a completely new private key, obtain a replacement certificate, install it at every TLS termination point, and verify that no endpoint still serves the old certificate or key. Revocation alone does not clean a hacked host, DNS account, or issuance account, and it may not make every client reject the old certificate immediately.
What to do when a TLS private key may be exposed
Consider the certificate unsafe if an unauthorized person could have read, copied, or used its private key. Common examples include an accidental commit to a public repository, theft from a web server, malware on a host, a leaked backup, or temporary unauthorized control of the server or DNS account used for issuance. The matching certificate should be treated as a revocation event even when you cannot prove that the key was actually used.
RFC 5280 identifies compromise or suspected compromise of the corresponding private key as a reason for a CA to revoke a certificate. Let’s Encrypt’s revocation guidance likewise tells subscribers to choose keyCompromise when they have reason to believe an unauthorized person accessed the key. Do not wait for the certificate’s normal expiration date while a potentially copied key remains valid.
The safe recovery pattern is:
- Contain the incident and regain control of every affected system and account.
- Inventory certificates that use the exposed public key.
- Submit authenticated revocation requests to the issuing CA.
- Generate a new keypair and issue replacement certificates.
- Deploy the new certificate and chain everywhere TLS terminates.
- Check each hostname, endpoint, and monitoring system after the change.
1. Contain the compromise before issuing anything new
A replacement certificate is trustworthy only if the environment that receives it is trustworthy. Begin by treating the old private key, its certificate, and the host that stored them as untrusted.

Regain administrative control
- Isolate or rebuild a host that may have been compromised. If forensic work is required, preserve evidence and coordinate with your incident-response process before deleting files.
- Rotate credentials that could allow an attacker to issue or deploy certificates: CA or ACME accounts, cloud credentials, DNS API tokens, CI/CD secrets, server login keys, repository tokens, and hosting-panel passwords.
- Review DNS records, DNS API users, registrar access, load-balancer configuration, CDN configuration, and origin-server access. Remove unauthorized users, keys, webhooks, and scheduled jobs.
- Check deployment pipelines and secret stores for copies of the private key. Revoke or replace pipeline credentials before allowing an automated renewal job to run.
- Record the incident time, affected names, certificate serial numbers, key fingerprints, systems involved, and actions taken. This prevents a forgotten endpoint from remaining in service.
Let’s Encrypt describes accidental publication, theft from servers, and temporary control of a server or DNS environment as relevant compromise situations. If an attacker controlled DNS or a host during issuance, assume that other certificates may have been obtained and investigate the authorization account and Certificate Transparency records, not just the certificate you noticed first.
2. Find every certificate that uses the exposed key
Start with the certificate installed on the affected service, but do not stop there. Organizations often reuse one keypair across several hostnames, load balancers, staging systems, or products. Every certificate containing the same public key should be considered in scope.
Use the public-key identifier
The private key itself should not be uploaded to a third-party search service. Instead, derive the SubjectPublicKeyInfo (SPKI) identifier from the corresponding public key or certificate and search for certificates with that same identifier. Let’s Encrypt’s documentation explains this SPKI-matching approach and describes using Certificate Transparency (CT) logs or a CT log monitor to locate certificates.
Build an endpoint inventory
For each discovered certificate, record:
- Subject and all Subject Alternative Names.
- Issuer, serial number, not-before and not-after dates.
- SPKI or public-key fingerprint.
- Where it is installed: web server, reverse proxy, load balancer, CDN, API gateway, mail endpoint, VPN gateway, container ingress, or origin.
- Which team or automation renews and deploys it.
Include inactive-looking names until you confirm that DNS no longer points to them and that no internal client depends on them. Also search CT records for unexpected certificates containing your domains. An unauthorized certificate may have been issued without replacing the one you found on the server.
3. Request revocation from the issuing CA
Use the issuer’s current authenticated revocation workflow. The exact interface differs between public CAs, private PKIs, managed hosting services, and ACME clients, so do not assume that a procedure for one issuer applies to another.

Let’s Encrypt-specific authorization routes
Let’s Encrypt documents three ways to authorize a revocation request:
- The original account that issued the certificate.
- Another authorized account that can demonstrate control of every identifier in the certificate.
- The certificate’s private key, by signing the revocation request.
The third route can be useful when the original account is unavailable, but it does not make the key safe. If the key may have been exposed, use it only for the revocation request and never for the replacement certificate. If a host or DNS environment was compromised, the alternative-account route requires you to regain control of the certificate identifiers and complete the appropriate authorization challenges.

Choose the reason code carefully
For Let’s Encrypt, select keyCompromise when you suspect unauthorized access to the private key. Select superseded when a new certificate is replacing an existing one for reasons other than key compromise. Other reason values in the documentation cover situations such as discontinuing use or no longer owning all names. Reason-code names and accepted values are CA-specific; follow the issuer’s current documentation or console labels.
Keep the revocation response, request identifier, timestamp, and certificate serial number in the incident record. An accepted request proves that the CA processed the request; it does not prove that every client has already learned or enforced the status.
4. Generate a new keypair and issue a replacement
Generate the replacement key only after containment steps are complete, and generate it on a host or in a key-management system you now trust. Do not copy the old private key, derive a new certificate from it, or “re-encrypt” the same key and call that a rekey. A replacement requires a newly generated keypair.

Key-generation requirements
- Use the key type and size supported by your CA, TLS terminator, operating system, and clients.
- Set restrictive file permissions or use a hardware-backed or managed key store where your architecture requires one.
- Keep the private key out of source control, ticket attachments, chat messages, and unencrypted backups.
- Document the new key’s fingerprint separately from the old one so a deployment check cannot accidentally validate the wrong key.
- Retain the old key only as evidence when your incident process requires it, and keep it quarantined and inaccessible to production services.
Request the replacement certificate
Request the same required hostnames unless your investigation shows that a name should be removed. Use the CA’s supported ACME client, portal, or private-PKI workflow. The authorization method may be HTTP-01, DNS-01, TLS-ALPN-01, an enterprise enrollment protocol, or a managed-platform process; the correct choice depends on the issuer and your topology.
Before approving issuance, verify every requested identifier. A typo or an accidentally retained domain can create an outage or issue a certificate for a name you no longer control. Save the issued certificate, the complete chain required by your clients, the serial number, and the new public-key fingerprint.
5. Deploy the replacement at every TLS termination point
Install the replacement certificate and its required chain wherever clients can encounter TLS. Updating only the origin server is insufficient when a load balancer, reverse proxy, CDN, API gateway, mail service, VPN gateway, or ingress controller terminates the connection first.
Deployment checklist
- Update the public load balancers and reverse proxies for every affected hostname.
- Update CDN or edge distributions and confirm that their configuration has propagated.
- Update origin servers, internal gateways, service meshes, and container ingress objects where the old certificate may still be presented.
- Replace certificates on non-HTTP services that use the same names, such as mail, directory, database, or VPN endpoints.
- Reload or restart the TLS service according to the platform’s documented procedure. A file replacement may not change an already-running process.
- Remove the old certificate and private key from active configuration, deployment bundles, and automated renewal jobs.
Plan for propagation and connection pooling. Existing long-lived connections may continue until they close, while new connections should receive the replacement. Coordinate a controlled rollout if several tiers must change together, but do not leave the compromised certificate active merely to avoid a brief overlap.
6. Verify the certificate, chain, and key on every endpoint
Verification is complete only when each relevant endpoint presents the replacement certificate and no longer presents the compromised one.

Check what clients actually receive
- Connect to each hostname using the real public name, including the correct SNI name. Test both IPv4 and IPv6 when they are published.
- Record the served certificate’s serial number, subject, Subject Alternative Names, issuer, validity period, and public-key fingerprint.
- Confirm that the public key matches the newly generated keypair, not merely that the hostname and issuer look correct.
- Validate the complete chain from the endpoint to a trusted root using the client libraries and operating systems your users run.
- Repeat the check against every load-balancer address, CDN region or distribution, staging name that can reach production, and direct origin address that is intentionally exposed.
Watch for common deployment failures
- Wrong certificate on one node: a pool member was missed or has a stale secret. Drain, update, and retest that node.
- Correct leaf, broken chain: the intermediate certificate was omitted or supplied in the wrong order. Install the chain required by the CA and platform.
- Hostname mismatch: the replacement request omitted a Subject Alternative Name or the service is selecting a different virtual host. Reissue with the complete identifier set and correct SNI mapping.
- Old certificate still appears intermittently: an edge cache, secondary listener, IPv6 address, or forgotten origin still serves it. Enumerate all DNS answers and termination layers.
- Clients report trust errors: inspect the chain, system trust store, certificate validity dates, and clock accuracy. Do not assume that revocation status is the cause until chain validation succeeds.
Keep endpoint checks and TLS error rates under observation after deployment. Look at application logs, handshake failures, client-reported trust errors, monitoring probes, and certificate-expiry alerts. Continue searching CT logs for unexpected certificates while the incident investigation remains open.
Why revocation does not instantly disable a certificate
Revocation publishes a CA’s statement that a certificate must no longer be trusted before its normal expiration. RFC 5280 defines certificate revocation lists (CRLs) as signed, time-stamped lists that identify revoked certificates by serial number. However, clients learn and enforce that information through mechanisms with different support, caching, privacy, and failure behavior.
| Mechanism | How status is distributed | Operational limitations |
|---|---|---|
| CRL | A client downloads a signed list of revoked certificate serial numbers. | Broadly supported, but lists can become large, updates can be delayed, and clients may not download them for every connection. |
| OCSP | A client or intermediary asks a responder for the status of a particular certificate. | Creates privacy and availability concerns; many clients soft-fail when the responder is unreachable, so a network failure may not block the certificate. |
| Issuer or platform-specific enforcement | A browser, operating system, enterprise proxy, application, or managed service applies its own policy or cached data. | Behavior varies by client, policy, cache lifetime, connectivity, and implementation. |
RFC 9325 states that no complete and efficient solution exists for checking the revocation status of common public-key certificates. It also discusses CRL scaling, OCSP privacy and soft-fail behavior, and the need for TLS implementations to have a strategy for distrusting revoked certificates. Therefore, “the CA accepted my revocation” is not equivalent to “every client immediately blocks the old certificate.” Replacing the certificate and removing the old key from service remain essential.

Let’s Encrypt announced that it would remove OCSP URLs from certificates on May 7, 2025 and turn off its OCSP responders on August 6, 2025. Those dates describe Let’s Encrypt’s service changes, not a universal rule for every CA. The announcement warned that non-browser software could be affected and specifically identified non-browser communications such as VPNs as a compatibility concern.

When to involve an external incident-response or certificate service
Organizations with unresolved host or DNS compromise, multiple affected domains, regulated workloads, or no internal PKI and incident-response capability may need specialist assistance. A managed certificate-lifecycle or TLS incident-response service can help coordinate inventory, reissuance, deployment, and monitoring, but its availability and scope must be verified directly. The decision should be based on containment and recovery requirements, not on an assumption that a paid CA is automatically safer or necessary.
For a single controlled endpoint, the existing issuer is usually the most direct starting point: it already has the certificate record and supported authorization path. Changing issuers during an active incident adds validation, chain, automation, and client-compatibility work unless there is a specific reason to move.
Completion criteria for the incident
Close the certificate portion of the incident only after all of the following are true:

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I revoke a Let’s Encrypt certificate if I lost the original account?
Let’s Encrypt documents revocation through another authorized account that can prove control of every certificate identifier, or by using the certificate’s private key to sign the request. If the key may be compromised, use it only for revocation and create a different key for replacement.
Should I use superseded or keyCompromise?
For Let’s Encrypt, use keyCompromise when you suspect unauthorized access to the private key. Use superseded when replacing a certificate without a private-key compromise. Other CAs may use different labels, so follow the issuer’s current guidance.
Does revoking a certificate immediately stop all browsers and applications from using it?
No. Clients differ in status checking, caching, connectivity, and enforcement. Revocation is necessary, but removing the old certificate and key from every endpoint is the dependable operational fix.
Can I reuse the old private key with a new certificate?
No. If the key may have been exposed, generate a fresh keypair. A new certificate containing the same public key leaves the underlying compromise unresolved.
