To revoke an app’s access, sign in to the Google Account that approved the connection, open Google’s third-party connections or linked-apps page, select the app, choose Remove access, and confirm. This blocks future use of that authorization. It does not automatically erase data the app already copied; deletion must be requested from the app or service.

The exact page name and buttons can vary by connection type and Google’s current interface. Use the app listing and removal control shown in your account rather than relying on an old screenshot. If the app used a 16-digit app password, revoke that credential separately.

What you need before starting

Have access to the Google Account that granted the permission. If you use several Google Accounts in the same browser, verify the profile icon and account address before changing anything. Authorizations belong to the account that approved them, not necessarily the account you normally use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You do not need to install software, buy a security product, or change your Google password merely to remove a connection. The process is performed in Google Account settings. If the app was configured with an app password instead of a third-party connection, use the separate App Passwords procedure described below.

It can help to know the app’s exact name and why you connected it. Providers sometimes use a company name that differs from the product name, and one company can have several separate entries. Do not remove a similarly named entry until you have opened its details and checked the listed services and date or context.

Remove a third-party connection step by step

  1. Sign in to the authorizing account. Open Google Account settings while signed in to the account where you approved the app. Check the account selector if more than one account is available.
  2. Open the third-party connections or linked-apps area. Google’s help pages describe this area as the place to view apps and services with third-party access. The wording and navigation can change, so use the current account settings link and labels shown for your account. Google’s instructions are available at Third-party connections.
  3. Find and select the app. Choose the app or service from the list. Open its details before removing it so you can see which Google information or services the connection can use.
  4. Read the listed scope. A connection may be limited to basic profile information, or it may include Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Photos, Contacts, or actions such as editing, uploading, creating, or deleting data. The permissions displayed for that specific entry are the authoritative description of what you approved.
  5. Choose Remove access. Select the removal control shown in the app’s details. Google may ask you to confirm; complete that prompt.
  6. Check the list again. Return to the connections list and verify that the entry no longer has an active authorization, or that its status reflects the removal. If it remains, make sure you were working in the correct Google Account and repeat the details-and-removal step.

Google states that you can review or remove linked apps and third-party connections at any time. Its current guidance describes selecting the listed app or service, opening the details, and using the removal control followed by confirmation (Google Account Help).

If you cannot find the settings page

Start from the Google Account settings for the account that granted access and look for wording such as third-party connections, linked apps, or apps and services with third-party access. Google can change navigation and labels, so a saved screenshot or an old set of menu names may no longer match. The important sequence is to open the account’s connection list, select the relevant entry, and use the removal control displayed in its details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the list is long

Open entries one at a time instead of removing everything in a hurry. Record the app name and the services it can reach before you disconnect it. This is especially useful for a calendar, mail, backup, or document tool that you may still use on another device. Each listed authorization is separate; removing one does not remove a different entry for the same provider.

Understand what kind of connection is being removed

“Sign in with Google” and permission to use Google Account data are related but distinct. An app can use one, the other, or both. The entry’s details determine which action you are taking.

Connection type Typical information or capability Where to revoke it What happens to data already received
Sign in with Google Basic profile details such as your name, email address, and profile picture; it lets you authenticate with Google. Select the app in the third-party connections or linked-apps area and choose the displayed removal control. Removing consent stops that sign-in method and future profile updates through the connection. Information previously shared remains with the provider unless you request deletion from it.
Authorized Google Account data access Depending on the scope, the app may view or copy Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Photos, Contacts, or manage data by editing, uploading, creating, or deleting. Remove the app’s connection from the same third-party connections or linked-apps area. Future access through that authorization is blocked. Revocation does not recall copies the provider already made.
Sign in with Google plus data access A single app may both authenticate you and request separate Google services or data. Review the combined scope in the app details, then remove the connection shown there. Both the sign-in consent and the listed data authorization stop through that connection; existing provider-held data requires a separate deletion request.
App password A separate 16-digit credential used by an app or device. Revoke the individual credential under App Passwords, not from the third-party-connections list. Google says the credential can no longer be used to access the account after revocation.

The table’s categories are not interchangeable. A Sign in with Google entry normally concerns authentication and basic profile information, while a data-access entry can cover particular Google services and actions. An app password is a credential, not an OAuth-style connection, so it has its own management page.

What removal changes—and what it does not

Future requests through that authorization stop

Removing a third-party connection prevents the app from continuing to use the authorization you revoked. If the app tries to use that connection again, you may be asked to grant consent again. A new consent screen is a new authorization decision; review its scopes rather than approving automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Revocation applies to the selected connection. It does not automatically sign you out of every other service, remove unrelated connections, or change permissions granted to another app. If the provider has several entries in your account, inspect each one separately.

Previously copied information is not automatically erased

Revocation controls the Google-side authorization. It does not reach into the provider’s systems and delete messages, files, contacts, calendar data, profile details, logs, backups, or other information the provider may already have received. Google’s guidance says that if you want data and information shared with the app deleted, you must visit that app or service (“How Sign in with Google helps you share data safely”).

Use the provider’s account controls or support channel to request deletion. Ask what categories it retains, whether copies exist in backups, and how long deletion takes. Read the provider’s privacy policy for its retention and deletion practices. Removing the Google connection and deleting provider-held information are separate tasks.

A deletion request may require you to identify the provider account, workspace, or email address associated with the connection. Keep the provider’s confirmation or ticket number. If the provider says some records must be retained, its privacy policy should explain the applicable retention practice; Google’s removal setting cannot override that policy.

Your Google password is not handed to the linked app

Google Account Help says, “Google doesn’t share your Google Account password with the linked app.” Sign-in consent therefore does not mean the app knows your Google password. That protection does not make every requested scope harmless: an app can still receive or manage the specific services listed on its consent screen, so inspect those permissions before deciding.

Removing access is not the same as deleting your provider account

Disconnecting the Google authorization does not close the app’s account, cancel a subscription, or remove content you created directly in that service. Those actions are controlled by the provider. If you want the service account closed as well, follow its account-deletion or cancellation process after revoking access.

Revoke an app password separately

An app password is not the same record as a third-party connection. It is a 16-digit credential created for an app or device, and its revocation route is the App Passwords page.

  1. Sign in to the Google Account that created the app password.
  2. Open the account’s App Passwords settings.
  3. Locate the credential associated with the app or device. Use its name, creation context, or date to distinguish it from other credentials.
  4. Select Remove for that credential and confirm if Google asks you to do so.
  5. Stop or reconfigure the device or app that used the credential. It will no longer be able to authenticate with the revoked password.

Google states, “Once you revoke the App Password, the app can’t access your Google Account again.” See Sign in with app passwords for Google’s current instructions. Google does not recommend app passwords in most cases and recommends Sign in with Google when that option is available; use this route when the connection was actually established with an app password.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Revoking one app password does not revoke other app passwords. If a mail client, scanner, phone, or other device has its own credential, identify and remove that credential separately. The device may continue running but will fail to authenticate until it is reconfigured with a supported sign-in method.

How to tell which route you need

The app appears in third-party connections

Select the entry and inspect its details. If the page lists Google services, data categories, or Sign in with Google consent, use Remove access there. This is the normal route for an OAuth-style linked app.

The app is absent from that list

First verify the signed-in account. An app approved under another Google Account will not appear in the current account’s list. If the account is correct, check App Passwords for a credential created for the app or device. App-password entries are managed separately and will not necessarily appear as linked-app connections.

Some apps may have been given access through a different Google identity or through a service administrator. If you are using a work or school account, follow the controls visible to that account and contact the organization’s administrator when the setting is managed centrally. Do not assume that an absent personal-account entry means the provider has no information about you; it may simply be connected to another account or credential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You see a connection but no identical button label

Google changes labels and layouts for different connection types and account interfaces. Open the entry’s details and look for the removal or disconnect control rather than relying on a particular screen position. Google’s documented action is to select the app or service and use the removal control followed by confirmation.

You removed access but the provider still has your information

That is expected when the provider retained information obtained before revocation. Contact the provider and request deletion, then consult its privacy policy for retention rules. Google’s removal setting cannot delete data already stored outside Google.

You can no longer sign in through Google

Removing Sign in with Google consent means that sign-in method is no longer available for the app. Use another sign-in method offered by the provider, or contact the provider if you need to recover the account before requesting deletion. Do not approve a new connection solely to regain access without reviewing the new permissions.

The app stops working after removal

This is the expected result when the feature depends on the revoked authorization. Decide whether you still need the service. If you reconnect, read the new consent screen and grant only the scopes needed for that feature. Reconnecting creates a new authorization; it does not restore the old one invisibly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the permission scope before you remove or reconnect

The name of an app does not tell you how much access it has. Google distinguishes basic identity sharing from access to Google services and from actions that can change data. The details screen can therefore affect your next step:

  • Basic profile: name, email address, and profile picture used to identify your account.
  • View or copy data: access to information in services such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Photos, or Contacts, depending on the scopes shown.
  • Manage data: permission to edit, upload, create, or delete data in the listed service.
  • Authentication only: Sign in with Google consent that lets the provider authenticate you and receive the basic profile information described on the consent screen.

These categories are examples of the distinctions Google describes; the app’s current consent details control what applies. For an explanation of Sign in with Google data sharing, see Google Account Help and its permissions guidance at How Sign in with Google helps you share data safely.

Pay particular attention to wording that describes management actions. Viewing a file is different from being able to edit, upload, create, or delete it. Likewise, an app that only receives a profile name and picture has a narrower scope than one that can access Gmail or Contacts. Use the specific list shown for the connection, not a generic description of the provider.

After revocation: a practical security check

  1. Confirm the correct account and entry. Make sure the removed connection belonged to the account you intended to change.
  2. Review neighboring entries. If you no longer use other linked apps, inspect their scopes and remove them individually. Each authorization is separate; removing one does not remove the others.
  3. Revoke related app passwords. If the same service was configured on a device with an app password, remove that credential on the App Passwords page as well.
  4. Request provider-side deletion. Send a specific deletion request for information the app already received, and retain any confirmation the provider gives you.
  5. Reconsider any new consent screen. If you reconnect later, read every requested service and action. Grant only the access needed for the feature you intend to use.

Keep a simple record of the app name, the Google services listed, the date you removed it, and any provider deletion request. That record is useful when several devices or accounts are involved and helps you distinguish a failed revocation from a separate credential that is still active.

Common questions

Does removing access delete the app?

No. It removes the Google authorization. The app account and any information already held by its provider are separate and must be managed with that provider.

Does revocation change my Google password?

No. Removing a linked-app connection or app password does not change the password you use to sign in to Google. It removes the selected authorization or credential.

Can I revoke only one permission from a connection?

Use the details shown for the connection. Google’s documented control removes the app’s listed connection; the interface may not offer separate switches for every individual scope. If you need narrower access, remove the connection and reconnect only if the app presents a reduced, acceptable scope.

Will the app notify me when access is removed?

The Google removal process is the control that ends the authorization. Whether the provider sends a notification is determined by that provider, not by the Google Account setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does revocation log me out of the provider?

Not necessarily. It stops the Google authorization, while the provider controls its own sessions and account status. Sign out of the provider or close its account separately if that is your goal.

Can I undo a revocation?

There is no need to restore the old authorization. If you still want the feature, start the provider’s connection flow again and review the new consent screen before granting access.

What if I removed the wrong entry?

The app can generally ask for consent again when you use its connection flow. Before reconnecting, verify the account and review every requested scope. If provider-held data is involved, contact the provider because Google’s removal control does not restore or delete that data.

Is an app password visible as a normal app connection?

No. Google manages app passwords separately from third-party connections. Check the App Passwords page and revoke the individual 16-digit credential there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove an app’s access to my Google Account?

Sign in to the Google Account that granted access, open third-party connections or linked apps, select the app, choose Remove access, and confirm. Verify that you are using the correct account.

Will revoking access delete data the app already copied?

No. Revocation blocks future use of that authorization. Contact the app or service and request deletion of information it already received, then review its privacy policy.

What if the app is not listed under third-party connections?

Check that you are signed in to the account that granted access. If it is still absent, look under App Passwords for a separate 16-digit credential associated with the app or device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I revoke a Google app password?

Open App Passwords for the Google Account that created it, locate the credential, select Remove, and confirm. Google says a revoked app password can no longer be used to access the account.

Does removing Sign in with Google change my Google password?

No. It stops that sign-in method and future profile updates through the connection; it does not change your Google password.

Can I remove just one permission?

Use the scopes shown in the connection details. Google may provide only a control to remove the listed connection. You can reconnect later only if the app offers a narrower, acceptable scope.

Does revocation cancel my app subscription or delete my provider account?

No. Google’s setting removes the authorization. Cancel subscriptions, close the provider account, or sign out through the provider’s own controls.

The Bottom Line

Use the Google Account that granted access, open its third-party connections, select the app, and confirm Remove access. Check the permission scope first, handle 16-digit app passwords on their separate page, and contact the provider if you also need information already received to be deleted.
