Remove the vehicle from the manufacturer’s account or transfer ownership, revoke any invited drivers, and erase data stored in the car itself. These are separate controls in many systems: deleting an invited driver may leave the owner connected, while removing an owner or administrator profile can remove other users and trigger a factory reset. Simply deleting the app from a phone does not revoke account access.
Use the procedure for your exact make, model year, country, infotainment system, and account role. Keep physical access to the vehicle until the account transfer and reset are confirmed.
Identify what access must end
Connected-car systems usually have several layers of access. Choose the action that matches the person you are trying to disconnect.

Do not treat a “Remove car” control as universally equivalent to “Transfer ownership.” The result depends on the manufacturer and whether you are the owner, administrator, or another connected-driver profile.

Prepare before removing or transferring the car
- Record the make, model year, country or market, and infotainment generation. Menu names and reset behavior can differ even within one brand.
- Sign in to the primary owner or administrator account. A shared driver often cannot transfer ownership.
- Keep the vehicle physically available until the account operation and in-car reset are complete. Some systems require a screen confirmation inside the car.
- Check subscriptions, remote-service plans, credits, mobile keys, and other benefits. Removing a vehicle or resetting connected services may cancel them.
- Have the vehicle identification number (VIN), registration, bill of sale, or other ownership documents ready. Manufacturers may request proof when a previous owner cannot approve a transfer.
- Save confirmation emails or screenshots. They provide a record if the vehicle continues to appear in an account.
When selling or permanently transferring the vehicle
- Open the manufacturer’s account or app. Use the owner or administrator profile, not a secondary driver profile.
- Choose the vehicle and the ownership action. Select a control labelled Remove vehicle, Transfer ownership, Sell vehicle, or similar. Read the warning before confirming; a removal can end subscriptions or account benefits.
- Complete any approval or identity checks. Some manufacturers notify both parties or ask for additional documents. Do not hand over the car assuming the transfer is instantaneous.
- Remove personal information from the car. Follow the owner’s manual for the exact model year to erase paired phones, contacts, call history, navigation addresses, profiles, garage-door credentials, and digital keys.
- Perform the prescribed factory reset. A reset may unpair the car from the cloud service, delete local users, and disconnect Bluetooth or mobile-key features. Keep a physical key available because remote functions may stop working.
- Verify the old account is clear. Sign out and check that the vehicle no longer appears in the app. If possible, ask the buyer to confirm that they can add it to their account.
- Retain the confirmation. Keep the transfer or removal email and the date of completion with the sale records.
Tesla ownership transfer
Tesla Support Canada documents this path: app menu > My Products > select the vehicle > Remove or Transfer Ownership. A completed transfer gives the new owner app access and removes vehicle information and access from the previous owner. Tesla says processing can take up to 48 hours and may require approval from the previous owner or additional review. The support guidance also warns not to transfer ownership unless you no longer own the vehicle. Removing a vehicle can end paid subscriptions and other account benefits, so review those effects before confirming.
When the seller cannot complete the transfer
The buyer should submit the manufacturer’s ownership request rather than creating duplicate accounts and hoping the old link disappears. Tesla describes a buyer request and review route that may require the former owner’s approval and ownership documents. Other manufacturers may direct you to a dealer or customer-service center. Provide the VIN and proof of ownership, and ask the representative to confirm that the former account’s remote access has been disabled.
When ending access for a shared driver
- Sign in as the primary owner. Driver invitations are normally managed by the account that owns the vehicle or remote-service subscription.
- Open sharing or driver management. Look for Sharing Center, Drivers, Connected users, or a similar control.
- Revoke the person’s invitation or remove the driver. Confirm the person is no longer listed as authorized.
- Check the vehicle’s active-user list. Some systems maintain a separate local profile in the infotainment system; delete it if the person’s profile remains visible.
- Ask the former driver to remove local credentials. They should delete the vehicle from their own app, remove Bluetooth pairing, and delete any mobile key. This is supplementary; the owner must revoke the server-side permission.
Toyota and Lexus Remote Connect
Toyota’s customer-service guidance says the primary driver can remove or revoke an invited driver through the app’s sharing controls. After removal, the primary driver regains Remote Connect control. The cited guidance also says a subscription is required and that only one driver can have Remote Connect access at a time. Exact labels should be checked in the current Toyota or Lexus app for your market.

Tesla distinguishes adding a driver from transferring ownership. Use the add-driver controls for someone who should have temporary or shared access. Use ownership transfer only when the other person becomes the owner.

Volvo connected-driver profiles
In the Volvo Cars app, a regular connected-driver profile can remove the car from its own profile without removing the owner’s connection. An administrator or owner removing the car has a broader effect: Volvo says associated app and car data are deleted and a factory reset is initiated. Confirm which profile is active before selecting Profile > Your cars > select car > Remove car.
If you bought a used car that is still linked
- Ask the seller to remove or transfer the vehicle. This is usually the fastest and least ambiguous route.
- Do not rely on a new account alone. A new profile may coexist with an old one, depending on the manufacturer.
- Check for former users and local data. Review driver profiles, paired phones, navigation destinations, contacts, mobile keys, and connected-service accounts on the vehicle screen.
- Request a manufacturer-supported reset or ownership review. Give the VIN and proof of ownership if requested.
- Test the security boundary. After the manufacturer confirms the old account is disabled, verify that only your account can view status or issue remote commands.
Kia Connect in the United States
Kia’s U.S. terms tell sellers to stop using the service, remove the vehicle from the Kia account, and delete stored information. Used buyers are told to confirm that the previous owner disabled access. Kia says that if access remains enabled, the former owner may still access vehicle information and interact with or change settings. The company directs buyers to a dealer or the Kia Connect call center and notes that proof of ownership may be required.
When the previous owner is unavailable
Contact the automaker or an authorized dealer rather than attempting to bypass the account. Have the VIN, purchase documents, registration, and identification ready. Ask specifically for removal of the former owner’s cloud access, deactivation of connected services, and a confirmation that the vehicle can be enrolled under your account.
Erase data stored inside the vehicle
Cloud unlinking and an infotainment reset solve different problems. Account removal stops a person’s server-side access; the reset removes information saved on the head unit. Complete both before handover unless the manufacturer’s instructions say otherwise.

Data commonly removed by a factory reset
- Paired Bluetooth phones and contacts
- Call histories and messages cached by the system
- Navigation destinations, home addresses, and route history
- Driver profiles, preferences, and authorized users
- Mobile keys and Bluetooth-based remote features
- Links to connected-car accounts and remote-service subscriptions
Exact contents vary by model year and infotainment generation. Read the on-screen warning and the owner’s manual before confirming. A reset can disable remote start, remote park, mobile key, or other connected features until the new owner enrolls the vehicle.
Ford SYNC guidance
Ford South Africa’s connected-vehicle privacy statement, dated June 6, 2023, recommends a factory reset before sale or transfer. It says the SYNC reset deletes paired devices, the phone book, call histories, stored addresses, and authorized users. That statement is South Africa-specific; use the current manual for your country and model year rather than assuming its menu path applies elsewhere.
Volkswagen myVW guidance
Volkswagen’s U.S. instructions describe a factory reset as a way to unpair the vehicle from myVW and terminate connected-vehicle data access. The reset can cancel connected-services subscriptions, may close the account, and disconnects Bluetooth services such as mobile key, remote start, and remote park. Volkswagen recommends using this reset only when you can maintain physical access to the vehicle, because remote functions may stop immediately. Primary account holders can also remove additional users.
Kia Connect in Europe
Kia’s European FAQ separates two actions: remove the VIN from the app and deactivate connected services in the vehicle’s head unit. Kia says both actions are needed to delete VIN-related data from the app and head unit. This European process should not be generalized to Kia’s U.S. service or to other markets.

Verify that access is really gone
- The vehicle no longer appears in the former owner’s app.
- The former driver or owner is absent from the sharing and authorized-user lists.
- The car’s screen shows no old phones, contacts, addresses, profiles, or mobile keys.
- The new owner can enroll the vehicle without an ownership conflict.
- Remote commands from the old account no longer return vehicle status or operate locks, climate, location, or other available controls.
- Subscriptions and connected services show the expected status after removal or reset.
- You have an email, case number, or screenshot confirming completion.
If any check fails, stop sharing the vehicle and contact the manufacturer. Tell support whether you are the seller, buyer, primary owner, administrator, or invited driver; that role determines which records they can change.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Deleting the phone app
Uninstalling an app removes only that phone’s copy. It does not, by itself, revoke the account’s vehicle access. Reinstall the app or sign in through the manufacturer’s account portal to perform the vehicle-removal action.
Removing the wrong profile
On systems with owner and connected-driver roles, removing a regular driver may affect only that person, while an owner or administrator removal may erase other profiles and initiate a reset. Check the active account role before confirming.

Handing over the car while a transfer is pending
Some transfers require approval or review and can take time. Tesla’s documented maximum is up to 48 hours, not a universal standard for other manufacturers. Complete the process and retain confirmation before assuming the new owner has exclusive access.
Assuming the same instructions work everywhere
Country, model year, infotainment generation, and service edition can change the controls. Volvo’s instructions, Kia’s U.S. and European processes, Ford’s South Africa statement, and Volkswagen’s U.S. reset guidance demonstrate why a local manual or support page takes priority over a generic tap sequence.
When to contact the automaker or dealer
Get manufacturer help when the vehicle remains attached after a completed removal, the seller is unavailable, the app reports an ownership conflict, a reset fails, or you suspect another person can still locate or control the car. Ask support to confirm three separate items: the former account’s cloud access, the vehicle’s local user data, and the status of connected-service subscriptions. Used buyers should provide proof of ownership if requested; manufacturers may not alter an account relationship without it.
