Kelvin and Virginia do not normally respawn after they die. Once either companion is dead in a save, ordinary gameplay cannot bring that same NPC back. Your practical recovery choices are to spawn a replacement with the built-in Admin Panel, restore or edit an earlier save, or use a version-compatible save editor. Back up the complete save before trying any method; file edits can roll back world progress, while a replacement Virginia may lose her relationship level.
What happens when Kelvin or Virginia dies?
Both companions are persistent characters. Their death state is stored in the save rather than reset when you reload the world. A normal restart, sleeping, changing difficulty, or waiting several in-game days will not revive them. Community documentation describes a dead companion as permanently absent from that save unless you intervene with a command, save recovery, or an editor.

| Method | What it changes | World-progress preservation | Virginia relationship | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Admin Panel spawn | Creates a new companion entity in the current world | Usually keeps the current world state | May return to her starting relationship level | Running the command repeatedly can create duplicates |
| Restore an older save | Replaces current data with a save where the companion is alive | Only preserves progress up to the donor save | Returns to the donor save’s state | Later building, inventory, and story progress can be lost |
| Edit the save directly | Changes the stored dead flag or companion state | Can preserve newer progress if the format is compatible | Depends on which fields are changed | Wrong keys or formats can make a save unreadable |
| Save editor | Uses a graphical tool to alter supported companion data | Depends on the editor and save version | Depends on the editor’s revive function | Third-party tools can lag behind game updates |
These are community-documented workarounds, not procedures confirmed in an official Endnight support article. Game updates can rename fields or change the save layout, so never assume an old tutorial still matches your files.

Method 1: Spawn Kelvin or Virginia with the built-in Admin Panel
The Admin Panel is the quickest option for a current PC save when you want to keep the present world. Gameranx documents the following route. It works by enabling the game’s command interface and creating a new companion rather than repairing the dead entity.
Before you start
- Load the save in which the companion is missing and enter the game world.
- Make a backup of the save first. If the command creates an unwanted duplicate, close the game and restore the backup.
- Use each command only once. The documented command can create additional copies if repeated.
Spawn Kelvin
- Type
cheatstickwhile you are in the game. The guide reports that no confirmation message appears; that is expected. - Press F1 to open the Admin Panel.
- Enter
addcharacter robbyand run it.robbyis Kelvin’s internal character name for this command. - Save the game, leave the area or reload if necessary, and verify that Kelvin is present.
Spawn Virginia
- Enable the panel with
cheatstickif you have not already done so. - Press F1.
- Enter
addcharacter virginiaand run it. - Save and check that Virginia appears in the world.
What this method does not restore
The command creates a replacement character. It does not guarantee restoration of every relationship, inventory, or scripted state held by the dead entity. In particular, Virginia’s friendship or relationship level may return to its starting point, so you may need to rebuild trust through normal gameplay. Do not run the command repeatedly to search for a missing companion: multiple entries can leave duplicate NPCs in the save and complicate later repairs.

Method 2: Restore a save in which the companion was alive
Restoring an older save is the most conservative recovery when you already have a recent manual or automatic save from before the death. It returns the entire world to that earlier point rather than injecting a new character into the current state.
Locate and back up the PC saves
A Steam Community guide places Sons of the Forest saves under:
C:Users%USERNAME%AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestSaves
Inside that location, multiplayer work commonly uses separate folders named multiplayer and multiplayerclient. The exact folder you need depends on whether you hosted the world or joined someone else’s session.

- Exit the game completely. For a hosted or dedicated world, stop the server before copying files.
- Copy the entire
Savesfolder, or at minimum the complete folder for the affected game, to a separate location such as an external drive. - Keep the backup unchanged. Give it a date-based name so you can identify the pre-edit version.
- Identify an older save where Kelvin or Virginia is alive. Do not overwrite the current save until you have tested the donor copy.
Transfer the donor save data
The documented conservative approach is to copy the relevant savedata.json from the older, healthy save into a duplicate of the target save. Work on the duplicate, not your only copy. Start the game and test the result before replacing your original.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This procedure rolls back more than the companion. Any construction, item collection, map discovery, or story progress made after the donor save can disappear because those changes belong to the older world state. If losing that progress is unacceptable, use the Admin Panel or a version-matched editor instead.
Method 3: Change the companion dead flag in the save
Other community guides describe editing GameStateSaveData.json and changing the relevant dead-state value from true to false:
IsRobbyDeadcontrols Kelvin.IsVirginiaDeadcontrols Virginia.
Make a copy before opening the file in a text editor. Change only a field you can identify with confidence, preserve valid JSON syntax, and keep the original archive untouched until the edited copy loads successfully.
Important version warning
File names, nesting, and field layouts can change with game updates. If the expected field is absent, do not invent a replacement key or paste one into an unrelated section. An absent field may indicate that the save format has changed, that you opened the wrong save type, or that an editor is required. Restore your backup and use a tool that explicitly supports your game version.

Why a flag edit can fail
- The game may store related health, inventory, or entity data elsewhere, so changing one boolean might not fully reconstruct the companion.
- A malformed comma, quote, or bracket can prevent the save from loading.
- Editing a client save instead of the host save will not change the authoritative multiplayer world.
- An update can silently ignore an old field name or migrate the save into a different structure.
Method 4: Use a save editor
Thunderstore lists SOTFEdit v0.10.2 as an open-source save-game editor with a function labeled “Revive Virginia & Kelvin.” A graphical editor can be easier than hand-editing JSON, but it remains a third-party, version-sensitive option.
Safe editor workflow
- Close Sons of the Forest and stop any server that uses the save.
- Back up the entire save folder and retain the untouched archive.
- Download the editor only from the project’s listed page and check that its supported format matches your game version.
- Open a copy of the save, use the revive function, and save the edited copy under a new name.
- Load the copy in the game or server and verify the companion, world state, and multiplayer connection before replacing the original.
If the editor reports an unknown format, missing field, or parse error, stop rather than forcing a conversion. A tool that predates your current game build can damage otherwise recoverable data.
Reviving companions on a dedicated server
Dedicated-server recovery has extra steps because the server’s archive, not a player’s local client file, controls the world. A March 9, 2026 Supercraft procedure describes stopping the server, downloading the current save, editing the archive, uploading it again, handling autosaves as the host requires, and restarting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Server recovery sequence
- Stop the server. Do not edit files while the server process is writing an autosave.
- Download a complete copy of the current server save and keep the original archive as a rollback point.
- Extract a working copy and inspect
GameStateSaveData.json. The procedure may also requireSaveData.json, depending on the host’s save layout. - Check the dead-state fields. The documented names are
IsRobbyDead: truefor Kelvin andIsVirginiaDead: truefor Virginia. Restore the appropriate state and health data only when the field structure matches your version. - Check entity entries. The same guide identifies companion type IDs 9 (Kelvin) and 10 (Virginia) for entity-state editing. Do not add a second entry if one already exists.
- Repack and upload the edited archive exactly where the host expects the active save.
- Handle autosaves according to the host’s documented procedure. An older autosave can overwrite your repaired files on startup if it remains active.
- Restart the server and have one player test the world before inviting everyone back.
Do not combine a newly spawned companion with an old entity entry unless you know which record is authoritative. Duplicate entries can produce corrupted spawns or prevent the server from starting. The exact file names, IDs, and health fields are version-sensitive and come from a third-party 2026 procedure rather than official Endnight documentation.
Which recovery method should you choose?
| Your situation | Best first choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want Kelvin or Virginia back without losing recent building progress | Admin Panel spawn | It changes the current world instead of restoring an older one. |
| You have a clean save from immediately before the death | Restore the donor save | The companion’s earlier relationship and state come back with that world snapshot. |
| You need to preserve newer world progress and can validate JSON | Direct edit or a compatible save editor | It may change only companion data, but format errors are more serious. |
| You play on a dedicated server | Server-side backup and edit | Client files do not control the authoritative world. |
| You cannot find the expected field or the editor rejects the save | Restore the backup and wait for a compatible tool or save | Guessing keys is more likely to corrupt the archive than revive the NPC. |
Troubleshooting after a revive attempt
The command appears to do nothing
cheatstick is reported to provide no confirmation message. Press F1 and try the command once. If the panel does not open, verify that you are in the game rather than a menu, that you typed the command exactly, and that you are using the PC build. Do not keep submitting the command; first restore the backup if you are unsure whether a character was created.

The companion is present twice
Repeated addcharacter commands can create extra copies. Close the game without making another save if possible, then restore the pre-command backup. If you have already saved, remove the duplicate with a save editor that supports your version rather than deleting random JSON entries.
Virginia returned but acts as if you just met
A replacement spawn can reset her relationship or friendship state. This is expected for the Admin Panel method. Rebuild the relationship through normal interaction, or restore a donor save that already contains the desired relationship level.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe save will not load after editing
Restore the untouched backup immediately. Check that the file remains valid JSON, that you edited the host’s save rather than a client copy, and that the field names match the current game version. If the key is missing or the layout differs, stop hand-editing and use a version-matched editor or an older healthy save.
The dedicated server starts with a missing or duplicated companion
Stop the server again, restore the original archive, and compare the entity records before attempting another edit. Make sure an autosave is not overwriting the repaired archive and that you changed the server’s active save, not a downloaded client save. Never append a second Kelvin or Virginia record simply because the first one is marked dead.
Backups and multiplayer precautions
- Back up before every command experiment, JSON edit, or editor save.
- Keep at least one untouched archive outside the game’s save directory.
- For multiplayer, identify whether the world is in
multiplayerormultiplayerclientbefore editing. - Ask all players to disconnect while a host or administrator replaces files.
- On a dedicated server, stop the process and disable or manage autosaves during the edit.
- Test the repaired copy alone before distributing it to the group.
Bottom line
There is no normal in-game revival for a dead Kelvin or Virginia. For the fastest recovery, enable the Admin Panel and run addcharacter robby or addcharacter virginia once. For a faithful earlier state, restore a save from before the death. For a server or a current world whose later progress matters, make a complete backup and use a version-compatible save edit, taking care not to create duplicate entity records. Every approach is reversible only if you preserve the original save first.
