A phone that will not turn on may have a deeply discharged battery, a faulty charger or cable, a blocked charging port, a blank screen, or a hardware problem. Start with safe checks of the phone and charging setup; do not assume the battery has failed just because the display is black.
Check for damage or overheating before charging
Look over the phone, cable, and adapter first. If the phone is unusually hot, visibly damaged, or swollen—or the cable or adapter is damaged—disconnect it and do not continue charging. If the phone is hot, move it to a cooler place and let it cool before using it. Do not heat a phone to try to wake its battery.
Do not open, crush, puncture, or attempt to repair the battery yourself. For a swollen phone, do not press the cover back into place or pry open the case. Google’s Pixel 11 Safety & regulatory guide says a swollen battery does not typically present a safety hazard if handled cautiously, while warning users not to press down the case, open the enclosure, remove the battery, or attempt self-repair. Contact the device maker or a qualified repair provider for handling and return or recycling instructions.
Rule out the charger, cable, outlet, and port
- Try a working outlet. Plug the charger into a wall outlet you know works. Make sure the adapter and cable are firmly connected.
- Test the accessories. If appropriate, check whether the adapter and cable work with another device. Then try a known-working charger and cable that are compatible with your phone. A damaged or unsupported accessory can result in slow or absent charging.
- Inspect the charging port. Check for visible dust or lint and make sure a case is not blocking the connector. Do not force the cable or probe the port with metal tools or other objects. The port and cable should be dry and clear before charging.
For Pixel phones, Google recommends a Google 30 W USB-C adapter or another PPS adapter rated at 30 W or more for the best charging experience, or a USB Power Delivery adapter rated at 15 W or more. Actual charging speeds vary by Pixel model. These are Pixel-specific recommendations, not a universal requirement for every phone; check your manufacturer’s guidance for compatible accessories.

Give a deeply discharged phone time to respond
A battery that has been fully drained—especially after a phone has sat unused—may not show an immediate charging icon or screen response. Google Pixel Phone Help says a completely drained Pixel that has not been turned on in a long time may show no charging icon, vibration, or display response for up to 25 minutes after it is plugged in. Google also advises allowing at least another 10 minutes during troubleshooting when the battery is very low. These wait times apply to the Pixel troubleshooting flow, not to all phones.
Leave the phone connected to a known-working, compatible charger while you wait. If the phone becomes unusually hot, disconnect it and let it cool rather than continuing the test.

Try the correct power-on procedure
Once the phone has had time to charge, use the startup or restart instructions for its exact make and model. For Pixel phones, Google says to hold the Power button for 5–7 seconds to turn the device on. Button combinations and timing may differ on other models, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming Pixel steps apply.

A black display does not prove the phone is unpowered. Google suggests calling the Pixel. If it rings while the screen remains blank, contact an authorized repair center; the symptoms point to a display problem rather than simply a phone that needs more charging.

When to seek professional help
Contact the phone maker or a qualified repair provider if the phone remains unresponsive after charging checks and the model-specific wait and startup steps, or if you find damage, swelling, or persistent overheating. Google directs Pixel users to repair options when its troubleshooting steps fail. Do not remove the battery yourself.
Repair options and eligibility can depend on the exact model, region, warranty status, and the device’s condition. If you need to preserve data, mention that before authorizing a repair; the available sources do not establish repair prices or warranty terms across phone makers and regions.

What the charging test can—and cannot—tell you
Trying a known-working compatible charger and cable helps identify a problem with the power source or accessories. It cannot repair a physically failed battery or establish the cause of every no-start problem. If the phone stays unresponsive after the safe checks, a technician or the manufacturer can diagnose it.
