Review FortiGate access records as a timeline, not as isolated alarms. Start with the device, virtual domain, time zone and account; examine administrator authentication and VPN events separately; then correlate source address, interface or method, result, reason and nearby activity with approved access records. FortiOS log ID 32002 means Admin login failed. That event is an investigation lead, not proof that an attacker succeeded.
What a FortiGate log can—and cannot—prove
A FortiGate record shows what the device logged at a particular time. It can identify an account, source address, administrative interface, authentication method, result and reason, but a single record rarely establishes the complete story. A failed administrator login may represent password guessing, an authorized person mistyping a password, an outdated saved credential or a monitoring system using the wrong secret. It does not, by itself, show that access was obtained.
Likewise, a VPN tunnel-up event confirms that the appliance recorded a tunnel becoming active. Whether the session was authorized depends on the account, remote address, timing, approval records and activity that followed. Treat unfamiliar values, bursts of failures, unexpected successful sessions and unapproved VPN connections as priorities for correlation rather than as automatic proof of compromise.
Prepare the review before judging any event
Identify the exact FortiGate context
Record the FortiGate identifier and the virtual domain (VDOM) associated with each event. A multi-VDOM deployment can contain different administrators, policies and logging expectations, so an account that is normal in one context may be unexpected in another. Preserve the original event record and its export format before filtering or annotating it.

Normalize time without losing the original value
Write down the event timestamp and time zone exactly as logged. FortiOS administrator authentication records include eventtime and tz; retaining both prevents a legitimate maintenance window from appearing to overlap an incident merely because one system uses local time and another uses UTC. Convert copies of the timestamps to one investigation time zone, but keep the original values for auditability.
Define the expected access pattern
Gather the administrator roster, approved source networks, permitted management interfaces, VPN users, maintenance windows and change tickets for the period under review. These records provide the comparison baseline. Without them, “unusual” means only unfamiliar to the reviewer, not necessarily unauthorized.
A six-step FortiGate log review
-
Establish the device, VDOM and time range
Open the FortiGate log viewer for the deployed FortiOS release and select the system and VPN event records relevant to the suspected period. Record the appliance identifier, VDOM, earliest and latest timestamps, and the time zone. If logs were collected centrally, note whether the displayed time is the FortiGate time or the collector’s time.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Collect the complete authentication context
For each administrator record, capture the username, source address, destination address when present, interface, method, status, reason and serial-number field. The FortiOS 7.6.6 administrator-login reference names these fields as
user, srcip, dstip,ui,method, status, reasonandsn, alongsideeventtimeandtz. Keep the raw message as well as a human-readable interpretation. -
Separate failed and successful administrator sessions
Filter for failed administrator authentications, then look for successful sessions involving the same account, source address or short time window. Fortinet’s FortiOS 7.6.6 reference assigns log ID 32002 the message Admin login failed, in the system category with Alert severity. Compare the failure’s reason and method with the organization’s normal login process before escalating it.
-
Review VPN events as a second access path
Search the VPN event family independently of administrator authentication. In the FortiOS 7.0.6 log-ID scheme, VPN events use the
0101series. Find tunnel-up and other relevant events, then compare the account, remote address, time and associated device or VDOM with the administrator records. A user can have a legitimate VPN session without having administrative access, so do not merge the two identities without evidence.Rank #2

Build a combined timeline
Order failed logins, successful sessions, VPN tunnel changes and nearby network or policy events in one time zone. Mark approved maintenance and expected automation. Pay particular attention to repeated failures followed by success, a new source address immediately before a successful session, a VPN tunnel that appears outside an approved window, or activity that continues after an account should have logged out.

Validate the conclusion with people and records
Ask the account owner or change approver to confirm the session, source network and timing. Check administrator and VPN assignment records, ticketing data, jump-host logs and other approved telemetry. If no owner can explain the event, preserve the evidence and follow the organization’s incident-response process rather than deleting or altering the FortiGate records.
How to read administrator authentication records
Start with log ID 32002
Log ID 32002 is the most direct starting point for failed administrator access in the FortiOS 7.6.6 reference. Its category is System, its type is Event and its severity is Alert. The message text is Admin login failed. The classification tells you how Fortinet labels the event; it does not tell you whether the attempt was malicious or whether another login later succeeded.
Compare the fields that explain an attempt
| Field | What to record | Question for the reviewer |
|---|---|---|
eventtime and tz |
Original timestamp and logged time zone | Does the event fall inside an approved working or maintenance window after time zones are normalized? |
user |
Account name | Was the account enabled, assigned to this device or VDOM, and expected to use this access path? |
srcip |
Originating address | Does it belong to an approved administrator network, jump host or VPN range? |
dstip |
Destination address, when present | Was the intended device or address part of the approved management path? |
ui |
Administrative interface recorded by the device | Does the interface match the administrator’s normal method and the policy for that account? |
method |
Authentication or access method recorded | Was this method enabled and expected for the account? |
status |
Result of the attempt | Is this a failure, success or another state, and are there neighboring records with a different result? |
reason |
Device-reported explanation | Does the explanation fit a known mistake, expired credential or policy condition? |
sn |
Serial number used for correlation | Can the same serial number connect a login record with a later logout or related session? |
Values that are absent should remain absent in your notes; do not infer them from another event. The FortiOS 7.6.6 reference documents the field set, but field availability and formatting can vary by release, logging destination and enabled options.
Use failure clusters carefully
One failed attempt is weak evidence. A cluster of failures from an unfamiliar address, several accounts targeted in succession, or failures that stop immediately after a successful session deserves faster review. Those patterns are investigative heuristics. Confirm them against source ownership, account use, maintenance records and the events immediately before and after the cluster.
Reviewing VPN events for unauthorized access
Know the event family and version boundary
Fortinet’s FortiOS 7.0.6 log-ID guide places VPN events in the 0101 series. Log-ID numbering and available fields are version-specific, so use the guide matching the FortiOS release that generated the record. Do not assume that an ID, subtype or field from the 7.0.6 scheme has identical meaning on a different release.

Correlate the tunnel with identity and source
For each tunnel-up record, capture the account or peer identity, remote address, timestamp and VDOM or device context when available. Compare the remote address with approved user locations, corporate egress ranges and documented third-party connections. Then look for administrator authentication or network activity using the same account or source. A VPN event that cannot be tied to an approved person, service or change window is a lead for investigation, not a standalone verdict.
Look at what happened after the tunnel came up
Review nearby records for management access, policy changes, unusual destinations or lateral movement indicators available in your other systems. The FortiGate log alone may show the connection but not the full set of actions taken through it. Preserve the time relationship so investigators can request matching endpoint, identity-provider or jump-host records.
Compare events with a consistent worksheet
Use the same comparison axes for every candidate event. A consistent worksheet reduces the chance that a dramatic source address distracts you from a normal account, or that a familiar account hides an unexpected interface.
Recommended Free Tools
| Comparison axis | Normal evidence to seek | Escalation question |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Named administrator or VPN user with current authorization | Was the account assigned to this device, VDOM and access path at that time? |
| Source address | Known corporate, jump-host or approved remote range | Who controlled the address, and was it expected during the event? |
| Time and time zone | Approved shift, maintenance or support window | Does the normalized time align with a ticket or an owner’s activity? |
| Interface or method | Documented administrative interface and authentication method | Was this interface enabled for the account and reachable from the source? |
| Result and status | Expected success or an explained failure | Do failures precede a success, or does the status conflict with the user’s report? |
| Reason | Explanation consistent with a typo, expiry or policy rule | Does the reason require a credential, policy or configuration review? |
| Device and VDOM | Expected appliance and virtual domain | Could the event belong to another tenant, appliance or administrative context? |
| Nearby VPN or network events | Approved tunnel and activity for the same identity | Is there an unexplained tunnel, destination or action in the same interval? |
Construct a timeline instead of relying on one alert
Write one line per event and sort by normalized time. Include the original time zone in a separate column, then add the account, source, interface or method, result, reason, device or VDOM and related VPN activity. For example, an illustrative sequence might show several failed administrator attempts, a successful session from the same source, a VPN tunnel-up event for the same account and a policy change minutes later. That sequence is more informative than any one line, but it still needs confirmation from approved-access and change records.
Use the serial-number field where the reference documents it as a correlation key for login and logout events. Correlation is strongest when multiple independent attributes agree: the same account, source, time window and device context. If only an IP address matches, consider shared NAT, a proxy or a reused address before attributing activity to one person.
Account for FortiOS version and logging destination
Use the reference for the release that generated the record
Fortinet’s FortiOS 7.4.0 log-message reference describes applicable messages, fields, extended logging and CEF mappings for remote syslog. The 7.6.6 reference documents the administrator-login field set used above, while the 7.0.6 guide documents the cited VPN numbering scheme. These references are not interchangeable: IDs, field availability and formatting can change between releases.

Distinguish local storage from forwarded data
FortiOS 7.4.0 documentation notes that performance statistics are not logged to disk, although they can be received through syslog or FortiAnalyzer. Therefore, absence of a performance-statistics record in local storage does not prove that no such data existed elsewhere. Record whether your review uses local FortiGate logs, remote syslog, FortiAnalyzer or another collector, and preserve the collector’s ingestion time separately from the event’s device time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check export and parsing effects
Remote syslog CEF mappings can transform FortiGate fields before they reach a security platform. Verify the original message, the mapped field and the parser’s interpretation when a value appears contradictory. Keep the FortiGate release, export format and collector name with the evidence so another analyst can reproduce the filtering.
Use FortiAnalyzer for multi-event correlation
FortiAnalyzer documents an event handler that triggers when a VPN tunnel-up log matches a malicious IP. The documented workflow uses correlation, incident context and tracing of possible lateral movement to guide follow-up investigation. In a multi-device environment, this can connect an access event with related records that are difficult to review manually.
Configure and validate such a handler against your own approved-IP lists, log retention and device versions. A malicious-IP match is a detection workflow, not a guarantee that every unauthorized session will be detected. A benign shared address can create noise, while an attacker using an address not present in the matching data may not trigger the handler. Review the underlying tunnel-up record and the correlated events before assigning severity.

Repeated failures followed by success
Compare the successful session’s account, source address, interface, method and timing with the preceding failures. If the source or account changes, treat the sequence as multiple hypotheses rather than a single password mistake. Confirm whether an administrator was troubleshooting a credential or whether an account owner recognized the activity.
Unexpected source or interface
An address outside approved management networks, an administrative interface not assigned to the account, or a method not used by that team warrants validation. Check for corporate proxies, NAT, jump hosts and planned remote support before concluding that the source is hostile.

VPN activity outside an approved window
Compare tunnel-up time and remote address with the user’s schedule, travel, on-call roster and maintenance ticket. An unexplained tunnel becomes more significant when it is followed by administrative authentication or network activity that the account owner cannot confirm.
Activity in the wrong device or VDOM
Unexpected appliance or virtual-domain context can indicate a routing, account-assignment or logging mistake. It can also expose access that was authorized for one context but not another. Verify the intended scope with the FortiGate inventory and administrative records.
Preserve evidence and respond safely
-
Preserve before changing configuration
Export the relevant raw records, record the FortiOS version and logging destination, and note the time zone. Avoid clearing logs, rotating credentials or changing filters in a way that destroys the original sequence before evidence is captured.

Confirm ownership without broadcasting assumptions
Contact the account owner and change approver through the organization’s established channel. Ask whether the source, time, interface and method are recognized; do not disclose a suspected compromise broadly while the evidence is being validated.
-
Escalate according to the incident plan
If an event remains unexplained, or if a successful session follows suspicious failures, involve the security or incident-response team. They can coordinate credential protection, session containment and collection from identity, endpoint, VPN and network systems without relying on the FortiGate record alone.
-
Document uncertainty explicitly
State what the FortiGate record establishes, what it suggests and what remains unverified. For example, log ID 32002 establishes a failed administrator login; it does not establish a successful compromise. This distinction prevents an investigative lead from becoming an unsupported finding.

Common review mistakes
- Treating every Alert as a breach: Alert is Fortinet’s severity classification for log ID 32002, not a determination that an attacker gained access.
- Ignoring time zones: Comparing local timestamps with UTC records can create false after-hours activity or hide a real sequence.
- Looking only at usernames: Shared accounts, renamed accounts and service identities make source address, interface, method and device context essential.
- Assuming IDs are universal: The cited 7.0.6 VPN numbering and 7.6.6 administrator-login definition are release-specific.
- Reviewing VPN and administrator logs separately forever: They are distinct event families, but their identities, sources and times should be correlated during an investigation.
- Relying on a collector’s parsed fields: CEF or other mappings can alter names and representations; compare suspicious values with the original message.
- Using a malicious-IP rule as proof: FortiAnalyzer correlation can prioritize work, but it cannot guarantee detection of every unauthorized session.
- Filling missing fields with assumptions: If a destination address, reason or interface is not recorded, mark it as unavailable and seek corroborating telemetry.
Printable review checklist
- Record FortiGate identifier, FortiOS release, VDOM and logging destination.
- Capture original timestamp and time zone, then create a normalized investigation timeline.
- Collect account, source and destination addresses when present, interface, method, status, reason and serial number.
- Find administrator failures, including log ID 32002 where applicable, and compare them with successful sessions.
- Review VPN events separately; in the documented FortiOS 7.0.6 scheme, check the 0101 event series.
- Compare account, source, time, interface, method, result, reason, device or VDOM and nearby activity against approved records.
- Investigate repeated failures followed by success, unexplained sources, unexpected interfaces and unapproved tunnel-up events.
- Check the release-matched Fortinet log reference before interpreting an ID or field.
- Verify remote-syslog or CEF mappings and remember that performance statistics may exist in syslog or FortiAnalyzer rather than on local disk.
- Use FortiAnalyzer malicious-IP VPN correlation as a validated detection aid, then inspect the underlying records.
- Preserve raw evidence and document what is proven, what is a lead and what remains unconfirmed.
