To manage what ChatGPT remembers, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. From there, use the controls available on your account to review or change remembered information, switch memory features off, or manage saved memories. To remove a detail completely, check both the saved memory and the places it came from, such as its original chat, a Library file, or a connected app.
The options can differ by plan, region, platform, and workspace settings. OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT explains the current controls and their effects.
How do I see what ChatGPT remembers?
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Review the controls shown on your account. Depending on availability, you may see Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories.
- If a summary or saved-memory list is available, inspect it for details you want to change or remove. You can also ask ChatGPT what it remembers.
A memory summary is a high-level view, not a complete inventory: it may leave out details or sources that ChatGPT can still reference. OpenAI says memory controls vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace settings. If an option is missing, it may not be enabled for your account; in a managed workspace, ask the administrator about its configuration.

Tell ChatGPT when remembered information is wrong or out of date. Where available, you can also edit the memory summary or a saved memory directly. Some summaries let you highlight text and provide a correction, or choose an option such as “Don’t mention this again.”

“Don’t mention this again” changes future personalization behavior; it does not delete the original information. If the detail itself should be removed, delete the saved memory and check the source locations below.
How do I delete a saved memory completely?
Saved memories and chats are stored separately. OpenAI states: “Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory.” Deleting a saved memory also does not remove mentions of that detail from past conversations.
For a thorough removal, check each place where the information may remain:

- Original chat: Delete the conversation in which you shared the information if you do not want it retained in chat history.
- Other sources: Check relevant Library files and disconnect any app that contains the information.
OpenAI says memory updates and removal may take time to propagate. Logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for safety and debugging for up to 30 days.
What happens if I turn off memory or chat-history reference?
Turning off a feature changes what ChatGPT can use going forward; it does not automatically erase every saved memory or source chat. The effect depends on which control you switch off.
Turn off Reference chat history
When Reference chat history is turned off, OpenAI schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from its systems within 30 days. The original chats remain in your history unless you delete them separately.
Turn off Reference saved memories
If Reference saved memories is turned off, Reference chat history is also turned off. If saved memories remain on, you can manage chat-history reference separately.

Turn off Memory
Turning off Memory does not delete past chats or saved memories already stored. If your aim is to erase information rather than stop its future use for personalization, remove the relevant saved memory and source material as well.
How can I use ChatGPT without memory?
Start a Temporary Chat and choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before the chat begins. A Personalized temporary chat can use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins; an Unpersonalized one does not use them. Neither creates or updates memories while it remains temporary.
If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat, and account personalization and model-improvement settings then apply. OpenAI may keep a copy of a Temporary Chat for safety purposes for up to 30 days.

Deleting a regular chat removes it from your account view immediately. OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, except when it has already been de-identified and disassociated from your account or must be retained longer for security or legal obligations. A deleted chat cannot be restored in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support.
Deleting a chat does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from it. Conversely, deleting the saved memory does not remove what the chat says.
