Read the permission request before you click Install, then test the extension with the narrowest site access that supports its feature. An AI label does not make browser access less sensitive. Evaluate the extension’s requested capabilities, host scope, data practices, publisher identity, source, and update history together.
This guide shows how to inspect those details in Chrome and Firefox, decide whether each permission fits the advertised feature, restrict access after installation, and respond when an extension asks for more access than you expected.
Why an AI extension’s permissions deserve a close review
A browser extension runs inside your browser and can be given authority to interact with pages, browser features, downloads, or local data. An AI assistant may need page text to summarize it, selected text to rewrite it, or access to a form field to provide suggestions. Those legitimate functions can still expose sensitive information if the access is broader than necessary.
Chrome describes the issue plainly: “Some extensions need permission to read and change site data.” The warning is a capability disclosure, not a verdict that the extension is malicious. Google Chrome Web Store Help explains that a warning “doesn’t mean the app is dangerous, just that it can be.” Treat that distinction seriously: broad access increases what a compromised, misconfigured, or misbehaving extension could do, even when its advertised purpose sounds harmless.

Use five questions before installation:
- What exact feature requires each permission?
- Which pages or websites can the extension reach?
- What data does the publisher collect, transmit, retain, share, or delete?
- Can you identify and contact the publisher?
- Can you limit, disable, or remove access later?
No official statistic establishes how often AI extensions overreach on permissions. The practical safeguard is a repeatable review of the capability disclosure and the publisher’s data practices.
Start with the official store listing
Open the listing in your browser’s official extension store rather than installing a downloaded package or a link from an unverified page. Record the details before you accept anything; a listing can change later.
Confirm the publisher
Check the developer name, linked website, support contact, and whether the identity is consistent across the listing, privacy policy, and support materials. An unfamiliar name is not proof of abuse, but an unidentifiable publisher makes it harder to obtain answers or hold the operator accountable.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Read the requested permissions and host scope
Do not stop at a short marketing description. Find the permission section and note whether the extension requests access to the current tab, named sites, all sites, browser settings, downloads, or data on the computer. Write down the exact host scope, because “current site” and “all websites” have very different consequences.
Inspect the privacy policy and data-use disclosure
Permissions describe what the software can technically access. The privacy policy and store disclosure should explain what it actually collects, whether page content is transmitted to an AI service, how long information is retained, whether it is shared, and how deletion works. Chrome’s policy requires developers to request the narrowest permissions necessary and disclose their data-use compliance for Google API data. A missing, vague, unrelated, or contradictory policy is a reason to pause.
Check update history and reviews
Look at the release history and recent reviews for changes in behavior, broken features, unexplained access requests, or reports that data was sent somewhere unexpected. Ratings, reviews, and a verification badge are signals to consider, not substitutes for checking permissions and data practices. A popular extension can still request more access than its feature needs.
Match every permission to an advertised feature
For each requested capability, write a one-sentence explanation of why the feature needs it. If you cannot produce a specific explanation, do not install until the publisher provides one.

| Requested capability | Feature that might justify it | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Read the current page or selected text | Summarizing an article, rewriting highlighted text, translating a selection, or answering questions about the open page | Does it need the entire page, or only text you deliberately select? Can the feature work after you invoke the extension? |
| Read and change site data | Inserting generated text into a page, editing a document in a web app, or adding an on-page assistant | Which named sites require modification? Why must it change content instead of opening a separate panel? |
| Access to all websites | A cross-site assistant that operates wherever you browse | Why must it run on account pages, payment pages, health portals, or private work systems? Is selected-site access sufficient? |
| Downloads | Saving generated files, transcripts, or exported documents | Can downloads be initiated only after your explicit action? Does the extension need to inspect existing downloads? |
| Browser settings | A feature that changes a browser-level setting, such as a controlled workflow or custom new-tab behavior | Which setting changes, and can you revert it? Is the request unrelated to the AI feature? |
| Data on the computer | Rarely, a local-file workflow or integration that explicitly needs local information | What files are involved, when are they read, and where are they sent? A broad request needs an unusually clear explanation. |
Chrome developer guidance recommends limiting permission requests to critical information and using less invasive alternatives where possible. A writing assistant that only rewrites selected text should not casually require every website, every download, and computer-wide data. The burden is on the extension to explain the mismatch.
Understand host scope as a separate risk decision
Permission type tells you what an extension may do; host scope tells you where it may do it. Review both independently.
| Scope | What it generally allows | When it may be reasonable | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| When you select the extension | Access is triggered when you explicitly invoke the extension | On-demand summarizing, rewriting, or question answering | Whether the extension still runs background scripts or retains data after the action |
| On the current site | Access on the site you are viewing | A task tied to one web application or a one-off page | Whether you can grant access only when needed and revoke it afterward |
| Named or selected sites | Access limited to domains you approve | A work tool used in a fixed set of document or collaboration sites | Every domain listed, including subdomains and any unrelated site |
| On all sites | The extension can read, request, or modify data on every page | Only when a genuine cross-site feature requires continuous reach | Why it needs account, payment, health, government, and private-work pages |
Chrome identifies access to data on all websites and all data on the computer as high-alert capabilities. Access to all websites can include sensitive account pages. Broad scope does not prove malware, but it increases the consequence if the extension is compromised or behaves incorrectly. Prefer the smallest scope that lets the advertised feature work.
Read the data practices, not just the warning
A permission dialog tells you what the extension could access. It does not, by itself, tell you what the operator sends to an AI provider or how long the information remains stored. Read the privacy policy and store disclosure for five separate practices.
Collection
Identify whether the extension collects page content, selected text, prompts, generated responses, browsing metadata, account identifiers, diagnostics, or crash reports. “We collect data to improve the service” is not specific enough to explain which data is involved.
Transmission
Determine whether text or page content leaves the browser and is sent to the extension’s service or an AI model provider. Ask whether transmission occurs only after you click a button or automatically as you type.
Retention
Look for a retention period or deletion rule for prompts, source text, outputs, logs, and backups. If the policy does not state how long information remains, treat that uncertainty as material.

Sharing
Check whether information is shared with model providers, analytics vendors, service providers, advertisers, or other third parties. The extension’s feature description should not imply local processing if the policy describes remote transmission.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDeletion and control
Find out whether you can delete stored content, close an account, or request deletion. A browser permission can be revoked, but revoking access does not automatically erase data already transmitted.
Verify the source before installing
Install from the official store and authenticate any listing obtained through an external link. Mozilla advises that add-ons obtained outside addons.mozilla.org should be authenticated carefully and recommends asking whether the listing explains why each permission is requested.
- Compare the publisher name with the developer’s official website and support address.
- Check that the privacy policy belongs to the same publisher and describes the same product.
- Be cautious when a download page asks you to bypass the store, enable developer mode, or install an unrelated package first.
- Check the extension’s update history for sudden ownership changes or a new request for broad access.
- Use reviews to spot patterns, but verify complaints against the current permission list and version.
Read the installation prompt literally
The final prompt is the most concrete capability disclosure you receive before installation. Read every line rather than accepting from habit.
Chrome
Chrome may warn that an extension can read and change site data or access other browser resources. Compare the prompt with the store listing. If the prompt is broader than the feature description, stop and investigate the difference. Chrome’s own guidance says users are unlikely to install an extension that compromises privacy or asks for more permissions than it seems to need.

Firefox displays an installation dialog listing the permissions an add-on requests. Install with the narrowest useful access in Chrome
Chrome lets you change site access after installation. The exact layout can vary by Chrome release, but the relevant controls are in the extension’s details page.

- Open Chrome’s menu, choose Extensions, then Manage extensions.
- Find the extension and select Details.
- Locate the site-access control and choose When you select the extension, On current site, or On all sites, depending on the labels shown.
- When available, add only the domains the feature needs and remove domains that are unnecessary.
- Open a permitted site and test the advertised feature with non-sensitive text.
- If the feature fails, expand access one step at a time, test again, and record which change fixed it.
Start with invocation-based or current-site access. Expand to selected sites only when the feature demonstrably requires it. Use all-site access only when you can explain why a narrower setting cannot support the function.
Review and restrict access in Firefox
Firefox shows requested permissions during installation, so capture the list before accepting. After installation, use the add-on’s management page to disable or remove it if the feature does not justify its access.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Add-ons and themes.
- Select Extensions and open the add-on’s details.
- Review the permissions and any available site-access controls.
- Disable the add-on before visiting sensitive sites if you do not need it there.
- Remove the add-on if its behavior, policy, or requested access no longer matches your needs.
Firefox’s installation dialog is not a one-time formality. Revisit the add-on’s details after updates and whenever the publisher changes its feature description.
Compare two AI extensions systematically
When two tools offer similar features, compare them on the same axes instead of choosing by rating or branding.
| Comparison axis | Extension A | Extension B | How to decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Permission breadth | Record current-tab, named-site, all-site, browser-setting, download, or computer-data access | Record the same categories | Prefer the narrower set that supports the feature |
| Feature fit | Map each permission to a specific advertised function | Map each permission to a specific advertised function | Reject unexplained capabilities |
| Data practices | Note collection, AI-service transmission, retention, sharing, and deletion | Note the same items | Prefer clear, specific disclosures over vague promises |
| Publisher transparency | Record developer identity, support site, policy owner, and update history | Record the same items | Prefer an identifiable publisher with reachable support |
| Source authenticity | Official store listing or external package | Official store listing or external package | Prefer the official store; authenticate anything external |
| Ongoing control | Can you restrict sites, disable, uninstall, and review changes? | Can you restrict sites, disable, uninstall, and review changes? | Prefer the tool that gives you practical control after installation |
“Not stated” is a meaningful result in this comparison. Do not fill an undisclosed retention period, sharing practice, or permission rationale with an assumption.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Red flags that should stop the installation
- All-site access for a narrow task: The extension rewrites selected text but cannot explain why it needs every website.
- Computer-wide access without a local-file feature: The product has no documented reason to inspect files or local data.
- Permission-policy mismatch: The store requests access that the privacy policy never addresses.
- Unclear publisher: No consistent developer identity, support contact, or policy owner exists.
- External installation pressure: You are asked to bypass the official store or install a package from an unauthenticated source.
- Automatic collection while typing: The policy indicates that prompts or page content are transmitted before you deliberately invoke the AI function.
- Unexplained change after an update: The extension suddenly requests new host access or browser capabilities without a feature explanation.
One red flag may warrant a question; several together justify declining installation and looking for an alternative with a narrower design.
What to do when a needed feature breaks after restriction
A failure after reducing access does not automatically mean the broadest setting is justified. Diagnose the smallest missing capability.

- Reproduce the problem on a test page with non-sensitive content.
- Check whether the extension needs the current page, a specific domain, or only text you select.
- Grant access to that single site or use the on-demand setting.
- Test again and note the exact permission that resolved the issue.
- If the extension still requires all sites, ask the publisher why and look for a documented alternative workflow, such as invoking a panel or pasting selected text.
- Revoke the temporary access when the task is complete.
If the publisher cannot explain the requirement, keep the narrower setting or uninstall the extension rather than granting permanent broad access just to avoid troubleshooting.
Recheck permissions after updates
Permission review is ongoing. An update can add a new capability, expand host scope, change data transmission, or alter the privacy policy. Before accepting a new request, compare it with the extension’s current feature list and inspect the updated disclosure.
- Review the extension’s update notes and store listing.
- Look for newly added sites, browser settings, downloads, or computer-data access.
- Revisit the privacy policy for changes to collection, AI-service transmission, retention, sharing, or deletion.
- Keep access restricted until the new feature proves useful.
- Disable or uninstall the extension if the change is unexplained or no longer fits your use.
A practical decision rule
Install only when all five conditions are satisfied: the publisher is identifiable, the source is authentic, every permission has a feature-level rationale, the host scope is no broader than necessary, and the data practices are specific enough for you to accept the consequences. If any condition fails, pause rather than relying on a rating or a reassuring product name.
Recommended Free Tools
The safest useful configuration is usually the narrowest one: invoke the extension when needed, allow only the current or selected site, test with non-sensitive content, and expand access only after a documented feature requires it. Browser controls let you change access, but they cannot undo information already transmitted, so the decision made at the install prompt still matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an “all websites” warning mean an AI extension is malware?
No. Chrome says the warning means the extension has the capability to access site data broadly, not that it is automatically dangerous. Treat the scope as a higher-consequence capability and require a specific, credible feature reason.
Can I revoke permission after I install an extension?
Chrome provides site-access choices in the extension’s details page, including “When you select the extension,” “On current site,” and “On all sites,” plus controls for allowed sites where available. Firefox lets you manage, disable, or remove add-ons from its extensions settings.
Will revoking browser access delete data the extension already sent to an AI service?
No. Revoking access limits future browser interaction. Check the publisher’s retention and deletion terms and use its deletion process for information already transmitted.
